Weather Manipulation Experiments

Bill S1807 in the Senate HR3445 in the House of Representatives Dear Editor, There is currently before Congress the bill S-1807 (Senate) and HR-3445 (House of Representatives). It is the “Weather Mitigation Research and Development Policy Authorization Act of 2007.” Its implications are beyond its stated purposes since Weather Mitigation (Manipulation) experiments are: 1) intended to serve preferred sectors of agriculture and commerce; 2) have military applications. At present this bill has been referred in the Senate to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and in the House to Science and Technology, Subcommittee on Energy & Environment. Weather belongs to all of us. This bill needs to be reviewed by Committees on Agriculture, Natural Resources, Human Welfare and others. It deserves the benefit of holistic scrutiny. This bill also needs to receive the benefit of wide and thorough public debate. If it is “fast-tracked” through Congress we may lose these critical opportunities. Readers of this paper may want to contact their Senators and Congress members to let them know that the issues and consequences of weather manipulation need to be broadly examined with a thorough legislative process and with wide-ranging public debate at the local, state and national levels. Mettowee Valley & Northeast Cemetery Association

The Cemetery Association is requesting all decorations be removed from gravesites by May 1, 2008. The policy of the Mettowee Valley and Northeast cemeteries is only to allow the following decorations on its grounds. No plastic decorations. 1. Live flowers planted in the ground; 2. No statues in addition to headstones; 3. Flowers can protrude no more than 12 inches (one foot) from the front of the headstone and cannot be any wider than the headstone; 4. Air Force Airman Cailean B. Hehir has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. He is the son of Brendan and Nancy Hehir of Overlook Road, East Dorset, Vt. Hehir is a 2006 graduate of Burr and Burton Academy, Manchester Center, Vt. Army Pfc. Stephen M. Harris has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. The two Manchester digital and film photo labs are now one and in a new location at 306 Depot St. Photographer’s Eye has taken over the Vermont Color Photo Lab business after being acquired by Bennington’s CTC Photographic Corporation. The new location, in the Dorr building at 306 Depot St. - east end, offers unlimited parking and easy access and egress to Depot Street. The employees of both imaging specialty stores are now ready to serve both firm’s customers at the new location. It’s that time of year again. Time to apply for a 2008 WuerslinStuecklen Memorial Grant. The grants are awarded to support the study and practice on the “Arts” by any Sandgate resident. The “Arts” means creative endeavors including, but not limited to, visual arts, performing arts, and literature. The amount of each award will be determined by the Award Committee. Harry McChesney Landscapes at Canﬁeld Gallery

Welcome the arrival of spring and its accompanying warm weather with “Plein Air and The Beauty of Nature”, a solo exhibit of oil landscapes by artist Harry H. McChesney at the Canfield Gallery in the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, Vermont. Join the plein air painter for an opening reception on Saturday, May 3 from 3–5 p.m. The show continues through May 31 and can be viewed during library hours. Based near the Albany, New York area, McChesney says, “My work is influenced mostly by the beauty of nature. It is always my desire to convey to others the emotion that I feel when seeing a beautiful subject.” A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he has since retired from the New York State Museum where he worked as a diorama background painter in addition to other positions. McChesney currently focuses his energy on fine art, primarily concentrating on plein air landscape painting in oil. The Canfield Gallery is located in the Martha Canfield Library on East Arlington Road across from Arlington High School. The gallery is open during library hours. Knitting Squares for Afghans

For the past eight years, the ladies of the Equinox Terrace, along with some local residents, have been knitting squares for afghans. To date, they have made over 500 afghans and donated them to the Vermont Veterans’ Home in Bennington, and the Bennington Homeless Shelter. These women meet every Monday at 10 a.m. and knit, swap life stories and talk about current events. Harriett Boone, Jane Moriarty and Sandy McHenry are local residents who come every Monday to work and help the ladies of the Terrace. The unsung hero is Shirley Mattison, who is pretty much housebound. She crochets these square together to make the afghans complete. Without her, the job would be almost overwhelming. Local residents are welcome to join the group on Mondays at 10 a.m., and help with the task of knitting these squares. The group would like to thank the community for all donations of yarn and needles.

New Book on Nerds Learn about the importance of “nerds” to our society when Bennington College Professor Dr. David Anderegg discusses his new book “Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them”, on Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at the Northshire Bookstore. The stigma of being a nerd is not harmless, says David Anderegg. The label can actually have a serious and lasting effect on children, and may be affecting our nation’s test scores in math and science. In “Nerds”, Dr. Anderegg reveals that fear of

social rejection leads children to alter their behavior, because individuals who excel at math, science and technology are perceived to be unattractive and undesirable. As a result, U.S. middle school children fall behind the rest of the world in math and science. Using research, psychological theory, and interviews with kids themselves, Anderegg urges us to examine the real issues behind the “nerd” concept, before any more smart, confident children hold themselves back from the intellectual pur-

suits they love. David Anderegg is a professor of psychology at Bennington College who worked extensively with children as a practicing psychotherapist for 25 years. His op-eds have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Miami Herald, and Newsday. Dr. Anderegg is also the author of “Worried All the Time: Rediscovering the Joy of Parenthood in an Age of Anxiety”. After a 40 year long, happy marriage a husband is forced to put his wife into a nursing home. When he sees her again following a 30 day settling-in period, she not only doesn’t recognize him but has a boyfriend among the patients. Feelings of guilt, relief and love conflict within the husband as he faces one of the most important decisions of their marriage. “Away from Her” was made in 2006, is rated PG-13 and is 110 minutes long. It will screen at the Pawlet Public Library May 13, the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. The film will be shown with closed captions and is free. Popcorn and punch are also available, gratis. For the third year in a row, Bistro Henry is sponsoring a Mother’s Day Brunch to benefit the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Funds from the event will go towards construction of a new home in West Rupert for a family of four. Chef/owner Henry Bronson said, “Building affordable housing is of tremendous importance to everyone in our area. Habitat does it one house, one family, and one mother at a time, and the community pitches in. That’s what we do, too.” The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. The menu will include a three course brunch with many delicious choices, and this is one of only two times per year that the restaurant serves brunch. Please call 362-4982 to reserve seating. The West Rupert home will cost approximately $80,000 and will be built almost entirely by volunteers. Many of the materials and professional services will be donated or heavily discounted by local businesses. The Morey family currently lives in a mobile home on land that they own. They will be working alongside Habitat volunteers to build their new home on that site and will invest at least 500 hours into the project. After the home is complete, they will make payments on a zero percent mortgage, which will be used to help fund the building of additional homes for other families. Redeemer Lutheran Church Offers Italian Feast

Redeemer Lutheran Church will hold its popular spring fund-raiser with a new twist. Instead of the traditional German Dinner, come and enjoy a robust all-you-can-eat Italian feast on Saturday, May 10 at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church banquet hall, located at the corner of Pleasant Street and School Street in Bennington. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Bennington Interfaith Council Emergency Food and Fuel Fund, the Coalition for the Homeless, and Redeemer. The food is homemade and will feature cheese tortellini with shrimp and spinach, lasagna, cheese ravioli, stuffed shells, baked ziti, pasta primavera salad, spaghetti, meatballs, Italian sausage, assorted sauces, artisan bread, Caesar salad, drinks and a brownie sundae for dessert. The Northshire Nonprofit Network will be meeting on Friday, May 2, 8 a.m., at the Greater Northshire Access TV office, which is located at 116D Lincoln Ave. (off Richville Road), Manchester Center, Vermont. The topic is the Nonprofit Program offered by Southern Vermont College. Two main points of discussion will be learning about the program so nonprofits can send key staff to courses and forging partnerships with SVC to provide opportunities for students to work as interns with this degree program. The guest speaker is Robert A. Consalvo, Ph.D., Associate Professor, McCormick Division of Business; Division Chair. Dr. Consalvo taught for over 30 years at various levels and 20 years at SVC. Respond to Courthouse Survey

Nearly 2200 Salem area households will receive a survey in the mail from the Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association (HSCPA) and Salem Central School during the week of April 28. The goals of this survey, designed by the Washington, Saratoga, Warren, Hamilton, and Essex BOCES (WSWHE BOCES) and funded in part by the Shoppe Off Broadway, are twofold. HSCPA wishes to find out how area residents have taken advantage of and enjoyed the courthouse in the past five years and to determine programs and activities they would like to see offered in the future. The community is encouraged to complete this brief survey and return it in the enclosed, self-addressed, stamped envelope by May 16. This input will allow the courthouse to become a true community center. WSWHE BOCES will analyze the collected data and produce a report available to the public.

Faculty Member Rebecca Halnon Awarded Burr and Burton’s Rowland Sabbatical

Burr and Burton Headmaster Chuck Scranton has announced that the second annual Rowland Endowed Faculty Sabbatical has been awarded to Rebecca Halnon, a special education teacher for 27 years who has been the coordinator and teacher for Burr and Burton’s Learning Center and Study Skills program since 1997. Halnon will use her sabbatical to study the relationship between stress and chronic physical problems. “I have experienced both personal and physical stress throughout my career as an educator,” she said. “Working with students who are challenged with emotional, behavioral and educational difficulties, I have to be the voice of reason, the one to develop resolutions, design educational programs and attempt to remain calm no matter what the circumstances.” Halnon hopes that by stepping back from her challenging role, she will be able to find practical and helpful strategies to bring back to the Burr and Burton community. Through research, interviews with experts, and learning stressreducing strategies herself, Halnon plans to develop techniques to help both teachers and students cope with the demands of their day. “In a

busy world with increasing responsibilities, we forget the importance of taking time for self,” she said. “It is my goal to bring back reflections and practices that can calm the soul and contribute to the overall well-being of our school.” _________________________________________________

Eat Local Challenge Launches Workshops with Food Producers

Last year, 75 people from the southwestern Vermont region took the Eat Local Challenge, and ate foods grown within 100 miles for one week in September. With transportation costs soaring, eating local makes even more sense this year. To kick off the 2008 Southwestern Eat Local Challenge, classes in how to raise your own food will create an opportunity for locals to learn more from the expert growers and food producers in the area. Workshops coming up in May include topics ranging from bees to blueberries, and soil to chickens. May 3, 10 a.m.-noon: Beekeeping with the co-chair of the local apiary society, Maddie Sobel. Maddie will offer a beginner’s guide to raising bees. She’ll take a hive apart and talk about the main elements of a bee community. Maddie is the co-chair of the Southern Vermont/ Northshire Beekeepers Association, whose members meet monthly at the Spiral Press Café to discuss beekeeping techniques. Brian Sweetland Exhibits at Dorset Library

The Dorset Library is pleased to have the beautiful works of painter Brian Sweetland on exhibit during the month of May. Sweetland’s oil paintings of rural Vermont are rendered with a gentle hand. His subjects are the threatened landscape, that which is bound to disappear, and he is adept at capturing both its substance and its essence. Pastoral Vermont is depicted lovingly, but not sentimentally; rusted farm equipment hulks under the cover of snow; Holsteins squelch in the muddy yard. He paints out-ofdoors year round, always in the company of his beloved dogs. Brian Sweetland was born in Wheaton, Minnesota, in 1952 and was raised in Montana, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Ohio. 30

After graduating from Ohio University in world history, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he independently developed his childhood interest in art and started oil painting. In 1977, his sketches caught the attention of Dean Faussett, a prominent landscape and mural painter, and founder of the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Sweetland was invited to move to Vermont to continue his studies. A grant from the Society for the Preservation of Traditional Values in the Fine Arts helped Sweetland begin his apprenticeship. His first major exhibit was held in 1980 and since then he has shown at many galleries in Vermont, New York, Alabama and Massachusetts. Maple Leaf Half Marathon Open For Registration

The Prudential Stratton Properties Maple Leaf Half Marathon and 5K Run and Fun Walk is now open for runners to register. Bipolar Support Alliance

The local chapter of the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance will be holding an educational event this Saturday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Bennington Free Library. Area professionals, Dr. David Brown and Dr. Roberta Bennett, will be available, along with literature and video presentations. Attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences with these illnesses via interviews with Dr. Brown. Refreshments will be served. The chapter sponsors two support groups. Curves of Bennington Partners With Avon for Women’s Fitness Study With over four million members worldwide, most would think the Curves women’s fitness franchise has nothing to prove. But the company is going above and beyond and looking for participants in the Bennington area to be a part of the Curves/ Avon Fitness Study to ensure that everyone knows the power of the Curves workout program. For $30, participants will be asked to complete 12 workouts over a 30-day period with a minimum of three workouts per week. A group of Bennington’s Monument Elementary School children livened up the four corners in downtown Bennington on Tuesday, April 22, with signs and energy urging all those walking and driving by to celebrate Earth Day. Battenkill Conservancy Receives Grant

Once again the Battenkill Conservancy has been selected as one of the recipients of the Stewart’s Holiday Match, a program initiated by The Stewart’s Shops in 1986. From Thanksgiving until Christmas, the Stewart’s Shops in our area have collected donations from their customers. The Stewart’s foundation has matched that amount reaching a total of over $1.2 million. This is the fifth year the Battenkill Conservancy has been awarded this grant, which will be used in projects benefiting children 18 years of age and under. This year’s $750 grant will be utilized for the Battenkill Summer Camping Adventure program. The four day, three night program for interested students ages 11-13 will include hiking, canoeing, outdoor skill building and investigation of the Battenkill’s aquatic ecology. CREATURES The Violet Seed - A Story

— By Davie Rolnick Once, in an old abandoned field overgrown with nettles and goldenrod, a passing robin dropped a seed - a small violet seed. The seed fell to earth and sprouted, in that unlikely location, and blossomed. The little plant sent out shoots, and, the next year, a little patch of violets blossomed in the field. Ants came, and fed from the violets, and built a nest - a simple mound in the field. No grass grew on the mound, and by and by a hardy little apple tree seedling came and flourished on the bare earth. Time passed, and the tree grew into a sapling, and then into a mature tree. It shaded out the goldenrod and nettles under it, and in their place, let grow grass and sorrel. One summer, there was a drought in the area, and most of the plants in the field died. But the grass under the apple tree was shaded, and retained

& ENVIRONMENT enough moisture to survive, and remained green. A herd of deer wandering through the field saw the growing vegetation, and browsed, and ate the apples, and trampled up the ground, and remained in the field. The next year, the drought was gone, and everything was very wet. The spot where the deer had turned up the soil grew muddy and pools developed. A stream feeding out of the woods fed into the pools and swelled them, and soon a pond lay by the apple tree in the field. Cattails grew around the pond, and rushes, and the stream’s exit from the pond became choked with vegetation. The area around the pond flooded, and a small marsh developed. The apple tree died and was replaced by willows and dogwood. A roaming beaver found the marsh and stream, and dammed them, and built a lodge, and felled the willows, and ate the bark. But the tree supply was soon exhausted, and the beaver left. The pond grew, and three other streams from the woods

now fed into it. The beaver’s untended dam developed leaks and broke and the pond drained into a small river now running from the four streams. As the river flowed, it picked up other streams and grew into a large creek. Men built turbines on the creek for electricity - and powered a factory. Workers in the factory built houses around the river, and a small town developed. As the town grew, markets and shops were built beside the river; and a park was planted. A passing robin built a nest in the park in a tree above a violet bed - and foraged and raised young. But the park was demolished the next year to make room for a municipal complex, and the robin had to abandon its tree and find other territory. It flew and flew, and, at last, found an old abandoned field filled with goldenrod and thistle. The robin rested, but could find no suitable nesting sites and left. And as it did, a small object fell from its foot - it was a violet seed. ____________________

Volunteers Needed to Beautify Bondville

The Winhall Beautification Committee invites folks in Winhall to join us in planning and working on projects to beautify the town. They plan for summer and fall flowers and will be considering tree planting in celebration of Arbor Day. In addition, the group puts up special decorations for the holiday season. Their summer chore is to water the flowers at the Town Hall and keep them looking nice. The committee meets on the first Monday of the month at 4 p.m., at the Town Hall. Ecko is an 8 year old, male German Shepherd who is very mellow, gentle, calm and friendly. He has hypothyroidism and is most likely deaf. Because of this, he will need daily medication for the rest of his life. Ecko is housebroken, leash-trained, likes car rides and enjoys swimming and grooming. Ecko has a strong displeasure for crates and we recommend that he not ever be crated, as he will do anything to escape confinement. He is beautiful and has a curious, inquisitive expression. Come and meet this gentle fellow. Gunner is a 4 year old, male German Shepherd who was abandoned at SCAC. He is reluctant to accept strangers and trust with this dog must be earned. Gunner is learning that he need not fear new people but he still has insecurities from his previous home. Because of this, we recommend a quiet home without children. Once he has bonded, Gunner is very loving and attention seeking. Gunner is social with other dogs, but is not good with small dogs or cats. Gunner needs a quiet home with an experienced shepherd owner where he can feel safe and secure. Gunner is available for meetings by appointment only. Bennington Historical Society Designing New Exhibit

The Bennington Historical Society is designing a visual exhibit reflecting the history of Roman Catholic Education in Bennington. The exhibit will be mounted on a wall in the St. Francis de Sales/Sacred Heart Parish Center as a permanent display. Because Catholic education in Bennington dates back to the first school, established by the Sisters of St. Joseph (1876-1898), to the present Sacred Heart School, the Society feels it is important to preserve this essential part of town history. In order to begin work on this “history wall”, the Bennington Historical Society needs donations of memorabilia that former students or teachers may have from St. Francis de Sales Academy, Sacred Heart School, Bennington Catholic High School, and St. Joseph’s Business College. The following items are needed: Old class photos, diplomas, awards or trophies, programs from plays, concerts, graduations or dances. Keep sakes such as ticket stubs, athletic letters, class rings, or school banners are also desired. Any items that cannot be used will be added to the church archives or donated to the Bennington Museum. Please leave all donations at the Parish Center on West Main Street. Art Exhibit at Rupert Kittay Library

Steven Schlussel will be the fourth local artist to share his painting at the Rupert Library. “A New England Vacation with Steven Schlussel” is the theme of this exhibit, as five of the paintings were done while traveling in Central Vermont, Monhegan Island, Lake Champlain, and The Adirondacks. From 1971-73 Steven studied at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he was Cofounder of Design Workshop, in Boston, and Artists Eye Studio, in Rupert. He was art director of H.E. Harris Co, S. Boston, Massachusetts in 1978, and has had multiple exhibits, including 1975 at Boston City Hall, and 1981 Hopper House, Nyack, New York, 2005 Elizabeth de C. Wilson Museum, Southern Vermont Arts Center. Rug Crazy in Rupert is but one of his current enterprises. An opening reception at the Kittay Library, 2867 Rte. 153, will be from 3-5 p.m., on May 3. Stratton Foundation Awards Grant to United Counseling Service

The Stratton Foundation has helped boost recovery from mental illness and addiction through a grant to United Counseling Service (UCS) that helps reinforce healthy living. The grant provides a significant addition to the lending library of books, CDs, and DVDs available at UCS to enhance counseling, reinforce personal changes, and help speed recovery. “People cannot easily get these materials otherwise, but they can be very helpful tools in aiding recovery and personal growth,” according to Northshire UCS Director Peg Gregory. The materials are available to anyone receiving counseling at UCS. The lending library includes many authoritative titles on parenting, teenage behavior problems, depression, relaxation, ADHD, marriage and relationships, breaking the cycle of substance abuse, and other frequent concerns. The materials supplied by the Stratton Foundation will be incorporated into the Northshire UCS substance abuse program. They can also be shared out to community groups and events to strengthen drugabuse prevention efforts. “The Stratton Foundation raises money locally to help support community non-profit organizations, Interim Executive Director Gun Burns said. “Our mission is to enhance the quality of life and create a sense of community right here in Southern Vermont. The Stratton Foundation is greatly pleased to support this kind of innovative approach that directly affects people in our community.” Northshire UCS offers quality counseling and treatment strategies based on the specific needs and concerns of each person. Clinicians use a variety of therapeutic approaches to promote emotional health and personal growth. For the past 80 years, the Dorset Players have produced quality community theatre for Northshire audiences. Traditionally, each season includes a production in October, December, March and May. The December production is earmarked for area youth, while the May production is a musical.
