AFRIC AN ILLUSTRATORS 2
AFRIC AN ILLUSTRATORS 2 Bold brushstrokes and delicately drawn designs make their way from canvas to cloth in our African Illustrators 2 fabric collection. Four local ar tists – Sarah Kelly, Elma Nelson, Felicity Ellis and Sharon Boonzaier – reimagine the splendour of indigenous flora and fauna and other natural features in this uniquely South African follow-up collection. Printed on luxurious viscose-linen base cloth to give these renderings greater effect, the African Illustrators 2 fabric range is ideal for upstyling scatters, headboards and more, and to bring a bit of home-grown magic into your space.

MEET THE ARTISTS Sarah Kelly (Scenic View, Route 62, Winelands, Aerial View, Bella Montana): “I often think my life is like an African version of Beatrix Potter, with bugs, seed pods and proteas on my desk,” says ar tist/designer Sarah Kelly, who finds daily inspiration in the African bushveld that surrounds the farm she lives on. “My contribution to the African Illustrators 2 collection celebrates South Africa’s agricultural heritage with its depiction of distinctive landscapes,” she adds. The Route 62 design presents familiar features of the Karoo in striking detail, while Bella Montana with its zesty lemons set against a crisp white background has an outdoor bistro feel and Winelands sees a Cape harvest come to life. Complementing these botanical-themed textiles are contemporary fabrics with a strong geometric element, showcasing the patterns of farmlands and other landscapes as seen from above.
Felicity Ellis (Avondale, Little Prince, Rainwashed): Having grown up on a farm in KwaZulu-Natal, textile designer Felicity Ellis spent her days whiling away the hours in nature. She’s brought her admiration for the resplendent local flora, her love of drawing and painting, and her appreciation of the act of creating something from nothing to this range of textiles. “An initial inspiration leads to drawing and painting, then to fabric and printing,” says Felicity, “and finally one is holding a beautiful piece of cloth that has gradually evolved into being.” Avondale, Little Prince and Rainwashed were conceptualised during lockdown in 2020, and symbolise a deepening appreciation of nature. “Despite what humans are doing, Mother Nature continues to give freely. Through my designs, I hope to convey the beauty of nature’s bountiful generosity.”
Elma Nelson (Ignite): Fire as a life-giving force served as the inspiration for ar tist/designer Elma Nelson, whose iconic images of fynbos form the basis of this design. “Fynbos is endemic to the Cape, and I have lived my entire life in Cape Town, so I feel as if fynbos is a par t of me,” she says. “When I see fynbos, I know that I am home – it represents an instant connection to home.” The relationship between fynbos and fire is vividly reflected in the brushstrokes of Ignite, a design that tells the story of the process of “burning to bloom” says Elma. “The flames destroy fynbos but also begin a process of germination and the oppor tunity for new growth.” The three colourways in the range showcase the lifecycle of fynbos: Veld Green is full of life, while fynbos in the midst of a raging fire plays out on Flame, and Afterglow depicts the process of rebir th from the ashes.
Sharon Boonzaier (Peaches): “This special collaboration with Her tex is all about celebrating the rich fauna and flora of our beautiful land,” says Sharon Boonzaier, an ar tist and décor specialist whose use of fresh colours and spontaneous fluidity is a hallmark of her work. Her Peaches design, she says, is inspired by summer-drenched out-of-town getaways. “Everybody loves to bite into a juicy, delicious, sweet peach! It reminds me of lazy sun-kissed days at my best friend’s farm in the Cederberg, where peaches drip like manna from the trees and we’d gorge ourselves on fruit and good times. We’d swim in milky water and enjoy the aromas of hot coals and a sizzling braai under a giant eucalyptus tree. Those were good times – this par ticular ar twork embodies all that is good about life and love in the countryside.”
