‫)‪HAVDALAH (complete transliteration and translation below‬‬ ‫‪Fill a cup to the top with wine or grape juice to represent a “cup runneth‬‬ ‫‪over” (Ps. 23:5), and raise it. Light the candle; you can raise it or leave it on‬‬ ‫‪the table.‬‬

Smell the‬‬ ‫‪spices at the conclusion of the blessing.‬‬

‫שמִים‪.‬‬ ‫ב ָׂ‬ ‫מלֶ� הָעוֹלָם‪ ,‬בּוֹרֵ א מִינ ֵי ְ‬ ‫בּרוּ� אַתָה יְהֹו ָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ ֶ‬ ‫ָ‬

Raise your hands, with the back of the hands to the candle, and ﬁngers bent forward, creating a shadow on your palms to represent the separation between light and dark.

ָ ‫ בּוֹרֵ א מְאוֹרֵ י‬,‫מלֶ� הָעוֹלָם‬ ֶ ‫בּרוּ� אַתָה יְהֹו ָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ‬ ָ .‫האֵשׁ‬ Raise the cup again and at the conclusion of this blessing drink from it.

A cup is ﬁlled to the top with wine or grape juice to represent a “cup runneth over”(Ps. 23:5), and is raised. The candle is lit and can be lifted or remain on the table.

Hinei el yeshu’ati, evtach velo efchad. Ki ozi vezimrat yah Adonai, vayehi li li’shua. Ushe’avtem mayim besason mi-ma’ayenei ha-yeshua. L’Adonai ha-yeshua, al amcha virchatecha selah. Adonai tzeva’ot imanu, misgav lanu elohei Ya’akov selah. Adonai tzeva’ot ashrei adam bote’ach boch. Adonai hoshee’a, ha-melech ya’aneinu veyom koreinu. La-yehudim hayta orah ve-simcha ve-sason vi’kar, ken tih’yeh lanu. Kos yeshu’ot esa u’ve’shem Adonai ekra. Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam, borei p’ri ha-gafen.

The cup is put down and the spices are held for the following blessing and smelled at its conclusion.

Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam, borei minei vesamim.

The candle is extinguished by blowing it out, or placing it in the grape juice or wine.

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust in God and not be afraid. God is strength and song, God will be my salvation. With joy you draw water from the wells of salvation. You will provide your blessings to your people. God of the universe is with us; the God of Jacob is our protection. There was light and joy, gladness and honor for the Jewish people; so too may we be blessed. I will lift the cup of salvation and call out God’s Name. Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, creator of the fruit of the vine. Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, creator of many kinds of spices. Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, creator of the ﬁre’s lights. Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who distinguishes between the holy and everyday, between light and darkness, between Israel and other people of the world, between the seventh day and the six days of the week. Blessed are You who distinguishes between the holy and everyday.

Eliyahu ha-navi, Eliyahu ha-tishbi, Eliyahu ha-giladi. Bimheira v’yameinu yavo eleinu, im mashiach ben David.

May Elijah the Prophet come to us, heralding the Messiah, soon and in our days!
