CALLING ALL ACTIVISTS AND RUNNERS!
Heshima Kenya is Hustling for Heshima! As we begin our personal training journeys, we are asking you, your family and friends to join our team as we race to the finish line and raise awareness about Heshima Kenya’s life-saving work for refugee girls in Nairobi, Kenya! This Hustle for Heshima Toolkit will provide you with all the information necessary to join our team, help us reach our fundraising goal and recruit runners, as well as how to start your own personal marathon training process.
ABOUT HESHIMA KENYA
Heshima Kenya is the first and only organization in Kenya to provide a full spectrum of holistic care for the most vulnerable of East Africa’s refugees: adolescent refugee girls who have been orphaned or forcibly separated from their family. Since our founding in 2008, we have provided direct services to over 2,400 refugee minors and touched the lives of over 18,000 refugee children who have experienced war, the loss of their families and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment and torture. Through our award-winning holistic model, Heshima empowers young women and their children to become catalysts for positive change and leaders in their own communities. Our programmatic model includes our safe house, case management, education, artisan social enterprise, community outreach, legal and medical advocacy and formal research. Learn more at www.heshimakenya.org.

FUNDRAISING
The two best ways to generate donations are by sharing the campaign on social media and word-of-mouth between friends and family. Creating a video for your own campaign page is a great way to share Heshima Kenya’s mission and information about collecting donations for Hustle for Heshima. On your phone or computer, record a compelling video about what Heshima Kenya’s work means to you, and why others should join our mission and donate to the campaign. Then, upload your video directly to Facebook (instructions at https://www.facebook.com/help/166707406722029) and add it to your Crowdrise profile. Make sure to set it to ‘Public’ so your friends can share! Your passion for helping East Africa’s most vulnerable refugee population can inspire others to do their part as well. Build a list of potential donors (friends, family, neighbors, sports club members, doctors, etc). Make sure you set a fundraising goal on your Crowdrise profile that you can aim for and check its progress as you start receiving donations. Face-to-face communication is important. Asking for donations via email can be effective, but meeting potential donors face-to-face certainly makes a bigger impact and allows your donors to really sense your devotion to the cause. Personalize your Crowdrise profile page. The more personal you make the cause, the more people will feel compelled to donate to your campaign. Follow up with those who have indicated they are interested or may want to donate. We are all busy and forget to do things–sometimes a little reminder is all someone needs to pledge a donation to your Hustle for Heshima campaign. Always remember to send thank you notes to your donors!
