How Do I Start My Own Business? To start a small business, especially in the current conditions of global financial insecurity, requires courage as well as careful planning. In this article you will learn how to start a successful business in seven easy steps. Step One: Initial Investment Some business writers tend to place market research before initial investment, emphasizing on it as the first step towards starting up a small business. Keep in mind, however, that finding start-up capital is the cornerstone of every successful business, be it small, medium or large. It's an urban legend that Rockefeller made his first million selling apples. Some people say that his uncle had lent him a million dollars for a startup which sounds far more plausible. Now, if your uncle is not a millionaire, you can just as well go to the local office of your bank and ask their business advisors for start-up packages and solutions. Of course, you will have to pay some interest on the money, but you may consider it the price of your business success. Get familiar with the various financing options and the amount of money your lenders are willing to grant. Of course, you should have at least a general idea of the nature of your business. Step 2: Market Research Once you find possible sources for a startup capital, it's time to make a thorough market research and business planning. In general, a good market research boils down to determining who is going to buy the

product that you sell, deciding whether there is a niche on the market for your product, and calculating the market price of your product, which is directly related to your production costs. Your profit is more or less guaranteed if you can make a high-quality product with minimum production costs. Step Three: Find a Good Layer If you are planning to start your own business, you should hire an attorney who is experienced in counseling budding businessmen. Step Four: Find a Good Account Book-keeping can be a daunting experience for a newbie in the business world. That's why you need a good and experienced accountant to do this for you. In addition to keeping your books balanced, a good accountant can save you a small fortune preventing some unnecessary expenses. Remember that the accountant and the attorney are the second most important people in a company after its owner. Step Fife: Choose a Form For Your Business Choosing the form of your business means to decide on whether it will operate as a limited liability, personal liability or a joint stock company. You'd better consult with your lawyer and your accountant on this issue. It very much depends on the product or service you will offer.

Step six: Choose a Company Name If you ask what's in a company's name, the answer is EVERYTHING! The company's name is how your business will be known on the market. Ideally, the name should describe the main activities of your business in a couple of worlds.

Step Seven: Get All the Paperwork Done If you do not want your business to be stillborn, make sure you have all the licenses and permits for the activities of your company; otherwise, the local authorities may punish you with bulky fines and even force your company to close down. John Stevenson writes about finance, personal loans, banking, money, investing and business lawyers.

Why Lack Of Capital Cannot Hold YOUR Business Back Think LACK OF CAPITAL Can Stop YOUR Business? Think Again!

I grew up hearing different people talk time and time again about “Lack of capital” as the reason why they could not start their own businesses or why they failed when they tried to start one. Some readily latch on to the perfect excuse (what I believe Americans call a "cop out") ...They say: even the banks will not lend money to them since they lack collateral and could not possibly pay back loans taken at the high interest rates charged by banks! My submission – with apologies to all those who subscribe to the above excuses - is that these problems are not insurmountable as most people seem to think they are. I make no idle claims here. Believe me - I live in a society where institutional - or any other kind of support for business startup is VERY FAR from abundant (capitalized emphasis VERY deliberate) compared to most other societies. So in that sense, I can relate to what they say – but only up to a point. Going by my experiences and what I SEE many people DO daily, I am fully convinced the problem is frequently NOT how or where to get money/capital. THE PROBLEM, MOST TIMES, IS WITH THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO GET IT! I explain, below... Learning That NOT Being Financially Intelligent Is A Bigger Problem Than NOT Having Capital

There are different dimensions of intelligence. Unfortunately, many “educated” people tend to be uneducated about this subject. Psychological research has proved irrevocably that different people are intelligent in different ways, depending on their predominating natural aptitudes. For instance a person might not be academically strong (i.e. s/he has low "academic intelligence") but s/he might be extremely “intelligent” as a football player – what the scientists would call having “Psychomotor Intelligence”. Robert Kiyosaki, in his book “Rich Kid, Smart Kid” described over 10 different geniuses intelligences), which people can have. (Get a copy of that book and learn more about this subject). He said his Rich dad often defined intelligence as “being able to make finer distinctions in life”. From reading Kiyosaki`s writings, I have arrived at my own definition of Financial Intelligence as “having an un-

derstanding of how to make creative use of money, in a way that ensures its perpetual availability”. Consider this. Let's assume you got promoted and earned a huge salary increase, plus allowances and other benefits splashed on you in your workplace (or if you own a business, let's say you made an impressively huge profit margin on a deal). To buy that brand new big screen TV you've always wanted, Robert vises

advises that one spend money in a way that ensures one still holds on to it (i.e. the money) at the end of the day. Using the ideas from Robert's books, one way to do it would be as follows: You would delay your “gratification” a little bit and take time to explore possible options of reasonably lucrative and reliable ventures/ investments you could put your money into. Then, over a certain period of time, you would harvest the returns from your investment to buy the TV, without touching the invested money. A bit simplistic I admit, but it communicates the message I want to get across. What is crucially important to note is that, you would have, by doing the above or something similar -established a new income stream source, acquired new knowledge/skills plus a new ”toy” (the big screen TV) - and still HELD ON TO YOUR MONEY! Now THAT would be financial intelligence in action. Like Robert's rich dad would say, "the

rich don't work hard – they make their money work hard for them”. So, as an entrepreneur entering into business you should have this kind of mental disposition towards your monetary expenditures. I started out in January 2002 with over N590,000.00(Last time I checked $1.00 USD = N130 approx. out here). A few short months later, believe it or not, ALL of that money was GONE! The reason: I lacked requisite understanding of how to handle money in relation to pursuing my business goals. Simply put, I lacked Financial Intelligence of the type described by Robert Kiyosaki. I made this mistake when I started, and many times afterwards. Old habits really do die hard - It was so hard getting this simple message to SINK into my "thick head" :-) despite the fact that I had read it! Someone once said “A person who does not

know, and does not know that he does not know, is a big fool!” In my case I was a perfect example of the fool and his money that are soon parted! I think my message has been well communication.

I leave you to ruminate on it, and decide how you wish to apply it to your personal situation. Insincerely hope reading this will help others AVOID making the same mistakes I did. Having said that, I try to take solace :-) in the words of R. Buckminster Fuller who, according to Robert Kiyosaki, once said: "I know so

much because I have made so many mistakes" - R. Buckminster Fuller To me, that statement re-assures anyone who DOES go ahead to make these or other mistakes, that it would NOT be the end of the world. S/he will STILL be able to succeed in spite of those wrong turns if s/he will only LEARN from them and PERSIST towards the goal. My "Mistakes" Had Little To Do With The Presence Or Absence Of A Business Plan One must LEARN to understand and deal with the realities extant in his/ her own environment in order to stand any chance of succeeding. The way things work out here in my country, most business plans in truth tend to be limited in their usefulness, beyond being used to make a formal statement of intention. (The situation in your country may of course differ). Here are 3 instances that illustrate what I mean: a). There are issues relating to ethical business practices - or more accurately, their widespread ABSCENCE. I don't have to say more here - the front pages of national dailies do a better job - reporting cases of multinational corporations complaining about this BIG problem. It's the reality - at least for now, though efforts at influencing change continue. You can gain some insight by reading my article titled "There Is Nothing Wrong With A Humble Beginning: Achieve YOUR Success With Hon

nour & Integrity". b). Then you have the prevailing economic climate/government policies etc(. E.g. Sudden upward reviews of petrol/diesel prices coupled with poor availability of both items PLUS perpetually erratic power supply which makes necessary the use of generators run with petrol/diesel (that's changing prices and NOT even readily available!) make using a business plan to reliably manage a business out here, in most cases a practical waste of time. Of course, some people would disagree with what I have said, but the best way to judge in my opinion is to LOOK around at how businesses that manage to survive) even the big ones - operate out here. It won't take long to SEE that there is major truth in what I have said. c). There is also the issue of how much of a market EXISTS for the product's) / service's) a business is offering. I throw more light on this in an article titled "Do You Need A Business Plan If Your Idea Is New, Untested, or Unproven?". Incidentally, I did

have a business plan (for my Integrated Fish Farm) startup that I took weeks to painstakingly prepare, going out to research various aspects, and getting guidelines from banks towards securing equity investment under the Small Medium Enterprises Investment Scheme( SMEIS). My experiences over a two year period in this regard, convince me of the accuracy of the opinions I have expressed above. Visit http:// www.selfhelpcd.spontaneousdevelopment. com to learn more about the business plan I wrote for my Integrated Fish Farm. Your Integrity Is The Best Collateral You Can Have – Nurture It! So if I “squandered” all my money that quickly, how did I survive? Well, I began by thinking – HARD! It did not take me long to realize I had no choice than to ask for HELP*. The question then was who to ask. My mind immediately went for the name's of persons I knew who would not doubt my motives for starting a business PLUS who knew me well enough to trust that I

would not request money under false pretences. Over a period of about nine months consequently, one particular person, a close friend, former colleague and confidant would bail me out to the tune of almost half of the total amount I had already spent - mostly at short notice. *Note: Some people let their egos get in the

way at this point, feeling they would look "weak" if they had to "stoop" so low as to ask for help from others. I would say if you have any viable alternative to ASKING for help, then go for it and achieve your purpose. If not, PLEASE swallow your pride and ASK - nicely too! - for HELP or forget your dreams! Napoleon Hill said your magnificent obsession will at a point take you over and you become one and the same with it. At that point you will think, drink, sleep and eat that vision you are working to achieve – sparing little or no thought for anything else. THAT state of mind, according to him, is what will make people and things that will help you achieve your objective come together at the right time and in the right place. He adds that this is what the uninitiated see happening to REAL entrepreneurs and other great achievers, which they call “luck”. More than five years on, I can look back and confirm that Hill's submission to a great extent, especially going by my experiences, explains how I managed to survive perpetual scarcity of CASH - and other resources – that afflicted me prior to EACH breakthrough that took me to a higher level of success in my work. I have always emerged WISER and MORE competent. You will hopefully be able to draw some consolation from knowing this up front if/when you pass through a similar experience. But INTEGRITY was a key factor: Luck has been defined as “that which occurs when preparation meets opportunity”. Entrepreneurs who benefit financially or otherwise from others, many times have paid their dues, and EARNED the trust, confidence, respect and empathy of those who extend such assistance to them.

At this point some persons who are the typical complaining type, who never want to sit down and THINK of how they can apply/adapt what they read to their own personal situations, will probably say “But Tayo, you had the advan-

That was my own “portion” if you will. But the result was that I had to think of other creative ways to carry on with my work. There was no point complaining. You will find that where you have one thing to your advantage, another person lacks that same thing.

similar background to mine, this is the first thing you have to watch out for – your spending habits. With very few exceptions, most people who go into business after having being in paid employment - especially where the pay was relatively comfortable - often lack the “discipline" needed to preserve the “lifeblood” (i.e. cash) of their new businesses. Sourcing Capital For Your Business ("Priming" Yourself To Do It Right) Now, I am not here to claim that I am the world's expert on raising capital or anything of the sort. Rather, I want to share with you my perspective which I believe is probably one of the most realistic ways to look at the problem–if you want to successfully tackle it.

So, as I said in my article titled "7 Deadly Myths That Can Stop You From Succeeding", you must learn to take what you are given, My position is that anything will be a problem and use it to get that which you want. for you if you believe it can be a problem for you. Next, decide within yourself that whatever plans you come up with, you will NEVER allow yourself to be discouraged if it appears that they are not working the way you intended – and the capital you seek seems not to be forthcoming. Take a pen and paper and begin identifying the various individuals, groups or organizations/institutions that can help you. Once you have a comprehensive listing you will then draw up a plan to approach and present your proposal to them for possible funding by them. To do this effectively, you will of course have to research specific potential sources of funding, and this varies from one society to another - as I have found from trying to follow ideas for sourcing funding obtained from reading articles by persons in the US, out here in Nigeria! You know your society better and will be able to judge -reasonably - what kinds of funding ideas are likely to resonate best with people/organizations you are likely to approach. Let me add here that I believe there is NO one correct way of raising cash. In my case following the advice in James Cook's "Startup Entrepreneur" book that "if you have to borrow to keep going, do so…but turn your back on handouts"), I have sourced it at different stages of my entrepreneurial adventure by giving up percentage ownership of my start-up company. Today more than five individuals (friends/ relatives have combined ownership of over 45% of my little company). I feel good about this because looking at the profile gives me the motivation to WORK HARDER to deliver on the promises I made to those who chose to buy into my idea.

At other times I have also bartered my services in exchange for a badly needed resource's). An example was when I lost access to a laptop computer I was using to implement a web design project for one client and an Excel VB project for another. In order to finish both projects, I negotiated with one of the clients, who ran a IT company specialized in building and installations of computers and telecoms utilities, to build me a new desktop computer system unit which I paid for by letting him pay me a sum LESS the charge for THAT service. As a result, I did not have to shell out cash from my own pocket. n reality, finding capital especially when the more obvious channels fail to turn up anything useful and that happens in my society quite a lot!) will often be about YOU being WILLING to think creatively. FINAL WORDS: Worse Than Lack Of Capital Is The Danger Posed By "Wolves In Sheep's Clothing" To survive in the real business world, anywhere, you will need to develop your sixth sense - specifically the ability to "detect" any signs of INSINCERITY in people you relate with especially in business. This is one of the hard lessons I learnt. And in my opinion a lack of this kind of "Street Wisdom" should give ANY startup MORE cause to worry than even a lack of valuable capital. Why? Because it could make you LOSE all you have, capital inclusive, to crafty/ dishonest business persons you may unknowingly choose to work/relate with - and possibly depend on for guidance etc. I have seen certain cunning individuals readily take advantage of “green” inexperienced persons, that come to them looking

for guidance and support. They do this by exploiting the latter business naivety – and then letting them down, often deliberately, when it matters most. To put it simply, they USE and DUMP newbie entrepreneurs. In fact, I once read a startup guide e-book chapter on Business Networking produced by a company called "Virtual Technocrats" which described these "wolves in sheep's clothing" as "Pro" net workers - one of four main types of net workers. The "Pro" is one who is selfishly motivated and typically notorious for "sucking the life" out of "Newbie" net workers i.e. using and dumping inexperienced others. Does not matter what part of the world you're in - they're everywhere. So, be careful who you go to for help! Networking is meant to be a mutually beneficial - symbiotic - relationship. Check those you do it with. If it looks like they only seem to take, and never give at all, or if you find you always get the distinct feeling you're being shortchanged, I say TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS and get out - FAST. How to Turn Your Words Into Wealth When you discover how to effectively communicate your message in your marketing materials, particularly on your website or in advertisements you may run, you can quite literally turn your words into wealth. Simply by choosing the right words to describe your product or service can mean all the difference between a business that struggles and one that thrives. Sound too simple to be true? Consider this: a major publisher once had a real dud on its hands, a book that wasn't selling squat. So one savvy editor changed the title of the book and it became a national bestseller, nearly overnight. Not a single word inside the book was changed, just the title. How cool is that? You can experience similar shifts in your business, simply by changing the way you communicate your message, the way you share your solutions with those prospects who need what you have to offer. You may have heard me talk about power words before; it's been a hot topic in previous seminars I've held, but in case you haven't I'll give a brief overview on why these are important, and then I'll give a few examples to help you get a better idea of how to put these into place. Writing your web copy and other marketing materials is about so much more than just throwing together words that sound good; your marketing copy really needs to first grab your prospects' attention, then get them excited about what your product or service has to offer, and finally get their wheels turning about how your solution will transform their business/life/relationship/etc. The right words will help your prospects really feel how great it will be to work with you and get the results they so badly want and need.

Need an example? Let's take the plain Jane phrase: "Learn how to train your dog" and spruce it up a bit with a few "power words" to make it: "Tap into 3 insider secrets that will crack the code of your dog's stubborn behavior and help you become the master of your domain!" See how much more powerful and intriguing that is? Here's another example: replace "Stop your dog from barking" with "Discover 5 proven ways to instantly stop your dog's incessant barking for good...so you can savor refreshing silence once more!"

Are you getting a feel for how much more powerful your statements can be when you learn to effectively communicate your solutions, your value and your brilliance? Keep this information in mind whether you're writing marketing copy or naming your products, services, and programs. Don't forget the publisher whose book wasn't selling for crap, and he simply changed the name of it, nothing else, didn't change a single word inside the book, and it became a national bestseller. That's how important all of this is, and why you should be paying extra attention to how you're communicating your solutions. It can be overwhelming to think about overhauling all of your marketing materials, so it may help to start small by taking a look at one thing at a time. Maybe start by examining your home page copy or maybe the title of your lead generating free giveaway. Think about where a few simple tweaks can make your promotions more compelling. .

Think and Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich is undoubtedly the most read success classic in history but I wonder how many people have gleaned the "secret" that Napoleon Hill speaks about in the beginning of the book. As a matter of fact, he says that this secret is mentioned at least one hundred times throughout the book. My goal is to identify what the secret is by analyzing the story of Edwin C. Barnes and his quest to become a partner with Thomas Edison. This is what happened... Early one morning I was inspired to read Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I

have always been intrigued by this success classic but during this period of time I decided to review it to see if I could discern the secret that Mr. Hill mentioned in the first part of the book. I decided to read and dissect the story about Edward C. Barnes and his quest to become a business partner with Thomas Edison. Keep in mind this story only takes up about three pages in the book; however I extracted twelve 3x5 note cards full of notes from these three pages. I hope you learn something from this article that you can immediately apply to your life to

become more successful. Edwin C. Barnes was a man who had developed a desire to become the business partner of Thomas Edison. Mr. Hill does not provide any detail about who Barnes was and what he did prior to developing this desire, but lets assume that he was just like you and me, however he lived during a different time period. Barnes was probably fascinated by the inventor and he knew that if he formed an association with this great man that he would make the most of the opportunity. The story starts by

Mr. Hill describing how Mr. Barnes possessed a burning desire to work with Mr. Edison and not for Mr. Edison. We can discern something about Mr. Barnes from this note because during that era most people where happy to find a job he was not looking for a job he was looking for an opportunity - this clearly identifies Mr. Barnes as an entrepreneur a risk taker - a person who is not afraid to think big. Another key point is Barnes knew exactly what he wanted to accomplish. He was not hemming and hawing or displaying other symptoms of indecisiveness. He was not confused and he did not display mixed motives. His desire was to become a business partner with Thomas Edison - period! He had a definite goal. Let's dig a bit deeper. An idea manifested into Mr. Barnes' life and he had no resources to

act upon it. Does this sound familiar? How many times have you had an idea only to back away from it because you didn't have a clue about how to accomplish it so you decided not to do anything? Remember, no decision IS a decision. What made Mr. Barnes different? Let's see, he didn't know Mr. Edison personally and we have no way of knowing if he knew someone who knew Edison to facilitate a warm introduction. So, let's assume that he did not know anyone who knew Edison either. Also, He did not have enough money to pay for train fare to Orange, New Jersey where Edison had located his facilities. What would you have done? Most of us would have probably given up and went about life as usual. We would have determined that the dream was unrealistic. Or we would have said that it was not the right

time. What did Mr Barnes do? We don't know exactly how he obtained the funding but we do know that he ended up in Orange, New Jersey. What happened next? In his book, The Success Principles, Jack Canfield describes what happens after you get an idea, goal, or inspiration he calls it considerations, fears, and roadblocks. You can bet that Mr. Barnes experienced one of the above after he conceived this idea and realized that he was missing key resources like train fare and a relationship with the inventor. Since Mr. Hill did not identify how Barnes raised money for the train fare, let's assume that he stepped out on faith, obtained the money and made the trip to New Jersey. The main point is that Mr. Barnes took action and assumed that he could handle any obstacle or difficulty that would oc-

cur on the way to his destiny. What can we learn from Mr. Barnes? o Start your quest for success with a burning desire o Become an opportunity seeker - never be afraid to think big o Sometimes you have to take action based upon faith o Develop strategies to combat considerations, fears and roadblocks before they show up o Assess your resources before you start a project - at least you know what you don't know and you know what you don't have The declaration of purpose Mr. Barnes arranged to meet with Mr. Edison where he proceeded to make an unsolicited proposal related to going into business with him. Barnes had a definite chief aim, he came to the point quickly and he was extremely clear. Mr. Barnes teaches us to be clear about what we want and not to be afraid to go

directly to the person who can help us with our goals and make a request - without fear or trepidation. What allowed Mr. Barnes to show up unannounced and propose partnership to a man who has the stature of a modern day Bill Gates or Donald Trump? Thomas Edison at the time was a larger than life figure who was honored and respected around world for his inventions. Mr. Barnes was so determined to become a partner with the great Edison that he possessed the "No matter what..." attitude that nothing was going to stand in the way of him accomplishing his goal. Mr. Hill noted that Edison sensed Mr. Barnes' determination, drive and initiative just by looking at the intensity in his eyes. This is instructive for us today as well because it displays that we must be so filled with desire for our goals that it emits from our bodies to be seen by anyone we

come into contact with. The bottomline is that Barnes desired a business relationship with Edison and he would not be denied by anyone or anything. Cut-off any chance of turning back Mr. Barnes gave himself no way out partnership or bust. Have you accomplished every goal that you have set for yourself? I bet if you think about it, you would discover that the reason you did not accomplish par-

ticular goal was probably because you gave yourself a way out, which means you held yourself back from releasing the full force of your energy and focus on accomplishing your

goal. Have you given yourself a way out of your current goals? The way out is usually disguised as a good excuse, a perfectly legitimate reason, a handicap, a situation or a circumstance. His success was ensured even before he left. I was struck by one key insight. The insight is that before Mr. Barnes departed for New Jersey, he had already succeeded at his desire of becoming a partner with Mr. Edison. How, you may ask? He succeeded because he had already made up his mind that he was going to work for Edison - it was a final decision and all of his thoughts were lined up to support that decision. His thoughts were established and the only remaining issue was to make reality match his thoughts don't miss that last statement. If you do, you miss, what I believe is the secret that Mr. Hill is talking about. Where has this bull-

dog tenacity and relentless persistence gone for people today? Why do we give up so easily when the road gets a bit rocky? Why do we throw in the towel when our lips get a bit bloody in the boxing ring of life? Where is the endurance to go one more round? I know one thing Mr. Barnes' thoughts won the business partnership with Mr. Edison even before he arrived in front of the brilliant inventor and businessman to ask - asking was just a formality. Patience in the valleys of life Are you surprised to learn that after Barnes showed up and made the offer, Mr. Edison actually made a counteroffer? His counter-offer was not the glorious partnership that Barnes wanted, but - Edison did offer Barnes a job. Barnes traveled all the way to New Jersey only to be offered a job - the one thing that he did not want and that he definitely didn't go

there to get. What would you do? Would you settle, take the job, and live happily ever after? I can hear you saying, "Well at least it is a steady job..." Although Barnes did not get the partnership to start out with he stayed focused on his overall desire. I am sure you have heard the saying, "you can lose a few battles but make sure you win the war." Well, Barnes lost the first battle but his mind was focused on the war and he was convinced that he possessed the strategy and the will to become the victorious commanding general in this battle to become a partner with Mr. Edison - he accepted the job while he regrouped his forces for the next major battle. Mr. Barnes' persistence kept him working for Edison over many, many months which was not his goal. Can you imagine the frustration that he must have

felt to sit there everyday and realize that he had not fulfilled his desire - he was so close but yet so far. I think most people would have called it quits and left after a few months - except Mr. Barnes was not most people. Mr. Barnes response was to intensify his desire for his major definite purpose. He turned up the heat on his desire - he wanted his goal even more. What can What can we learn from Mr. Barnes? o Communicate clearly and succinctly - ask for what you want o Find out who can help you with your goals and go ask them for help o Audacity is a required trait for every entrepreneur o Develop the "No matter what" attitude o Burn your ships to remove the chance of giving yourself a way out o Your thoughts determine your results - If you think you've

won - you have won - now, make reality match your thoughts o When things don't go as planned, stay focused, be patient and watch for your opportunity Staying focused Mr. Barnes remained fixed on the idea of a partnership with Mr. Edison which caused him to "remain ready" for the opportunity when it presented itself - because he knew that the opportunity would always present itself because he used the powerful Law of Attraction. How did Mr. Barnes keep himself motivated? Can you imagine the frustrating and stifling feelings that he experienced? He used positive self-talk and he continued to reaffirm his desire for a business partnership with Mr. Edison. Mr. Barnes staked his life on his desire and he exhibited what I like to call a "no-fail" attitude which means that failure was not an

option - he would not allow the circumstance of failure to occur - he was unstoppable in his pursuit of his dream. Do you know anyone who is THAT definite? What do I mean? Do you know anyone who has identified their major definite purpose and who has stood on that purpose until it became an obsession?

Determination and persistence in pursuing a desire leads to greater opportunities. Barnes was so determined and persistent that he would have stayed as long as it took to capture his dream, however something happened... The opportunity appears... During his daily work, Mr. Barnes was always on the look-out for ways to be of service and to spot potential opportunities. He must have been very observant of his surroundings because his big break came in an unrecognizable way and from a dif-

ferent direction than where he was expecting it. His level of attraction was so strong that he attracted his desire not in the way he wanted it but in the way that God wanted to bless him.

portunities all around him. He clearly recognized that this was an opportunity to fulfill his desire of becoming Edison's partner by taking the new invention and selling it to the best of his ability.

opportunity! He hit this opportunity out of the proverbial park. He hit a homerun. He became a business partner with the great Thomas Edison - goal achieved and desire fulfilled.

Mr. Hill states that opportunity often comes disguised as misfortune or temporary defeat. I am sure that Mr. Barnes may have experienced frustration and discouragement because things were not moving fast enough for him. I am sure that most of us would have failed to recognize the opportunity because it was not presented in a neatly wrapped package labeled "your opportunity of a lifetime."

Mr. Barnes saw opportunity where others saw obstacles and fears because he was truly interested in Edison's work, which ultimately lead to his goal of becoming a partner with Edison while everyone else continued to sit back and complain about how they "couldn't" sell the dictating machines - basically giving a lot of excuses.

What can we learn from Mr. Barnes?

Mr. Edison created a dictating machine that his salesmen were not enthusiastic about selling. They didn't think that it would sale without a lot of effort. Mr. Barnes immediately recognized an opportunity. Why? His mind was oriented to spot op-

Mr. Barnes displayed outstanding confidence in his own abilities by suggesting to Edison that he would sell the machine. And sold it he did. Barnes lived up to his claim by selling the machine so successfully that Edison gave him a contract to distribute the machine nationally. Talk about exploiting an

Mr. Barnes teaches us that thoughts are things and that our thoughts can make us rich. For example, Barnes earned two or three million dollars based upon one idea. Clearly, Barnes became a very wealthy man, but his greatest asset was not the money he earned, but the fact that he learned how to take his thoughts and transmute them into material rewards by the application of certain principles. Remember, the only assets he started with were his desire, his knowledge of what he wanted, and his determination to stick with it no matter how long it would take to realize. So what is the secret of Think and Grow Rich?

The secret was revealed to us by Mr. Earl Nightingale, one of the pioneers of the self-improvement industry and cofounder of Nightingale-Conant, in one of his audio recordings. One night he jumped up because in an instant he was given the insight about what this secret was - he ran to his wife and said, "I've got it!" Obviously, she was probably thinking what does he have that is causing so much excitement? Earl proceeded to tell her that the secret that he had been trying to find for all of these years is that you become what you think about most of the time! Your thoughts control who and what you become. I know this is not an earth shattering insight, but this secret has puzzled me for years until I really started to pay attention to what Mr. Hill and other writers have been saying and writing. The key to really "getting"

this insight is to examine how you think and the results you are getting right now. If your results are not what you want them to be - examine what you have been thinking about on a daily basis and you will see that your results match your thoughts - exactly. If you want to change your results, change what you think about on a daily basis. Your outer "physical" world will match your inner "mental" world - perfectly. If you have not aligned your thinking then you will have the experience of incongruence - nothing will match. The best way to find out if your thoughts are aligned with reality is to look at what you are currently experiencing. For example, if you want to experience success in your job, you first have to identify what success means to you. Does success mean promotions, more money, or more re-

sponsibility? The next step is to look at what is actually happening in your current environment. Are you having the experience of promotions, more money, or more responsibility? If the answer is "no," your thoughts are not in alignment with your desires. You are probably thinking, "Well, how can I align my thoughts with my desires?" Let me direct you back to Think and Grow Rich, Chapter 2: Desire The Starting of All Achievement. Article written by Vernon Myers

Expanding the Vision The organization, which you lead, once the vision is developed, communicated and accepted it is time to live the vision. Live the vision? Live the vision, yes if the vision is real, it cannot be left in a small box and stored somewhere for reference and only brought out when you are in front of the organization. In ministry whether we like it or not, the reality is we are watched and the expectation is high from the ministry members, from those in the church outside the ministry and from those friends outside the church. Living what we have laid down, as the ministry vision will be critically important. Maybe you want to go back and revisit the vision statement. If so, go ahead. For iron to sharpen iron, in your ministry you will be expected to be the lead sharpener. The vision sets the tone for everything you will do and everything you expect. Too many times the vision is announced and never revisited. The vision will need to be communicated over and over verbally and through your actions and the actions of the ministry. If your vision, for example is to Love God, love our families, love each other and love the community. This is intentionally touching all areas and driving the ministry to be outward facing. Each part of the vision needs to be lived all the time. Loving God through private action, of prayer, worship and Bible study and public action of active church attendance, active support of the Pastor and being seen as the one who demonstrates love for others. Then loving family through true devotion to the family, loving your wife like Christ loved the church that He died for her, big order but one I must strive to live up to. Love your children bring them up in a Godly way, don't frustrate your children. Live as a consistent example for them. Love the members of the ministry by lifting them up supporting them, listening and building Godly Friendships. There are a lot of hurting people in the ministry with you.

Community, the value of the work will be seen in the impact on the community. Do things to take care of people's physical needs, putting them in a position to listen to your Gospel Message. Jesus said they would know Me by the love you have for one and other. The vision should be communicated over and over verbally and through the actions of the leadership and the actions of the men in ministry The actions, as always, speak louder than the words. The words are important as you act out the vision, point back to the vision statement by remembering to the members, that vision statement and how what you are doing is acting in reference to and supportive of that vision statement. Through actions that are always consistent with your vision you will see that the results are iron sharpens iron in your life, in your family, in the ministry and in the community. Erotiese Kapitaal

Me.

Hier is haar raad: • Beskou jouself as ’n handelsmerk.

Stel opreg in ander belang.

Financial Freedom is Not About Luck

Prince Charming, Leprechauns and The Government are Not Going to Save You Whether you’ re Irish or not, you may be celebrating St. Patrick ’s Day this Saturday and wishing for some luck. But if you are waiting for a leprechaun or a four-leaf clover to help you achieve financial freedom, you’ve probably had too much green beer. According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of luck is: “a : a force that brings good fortune or adversity b : the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual” Well, guess what? When it comes to financial freedom, or any kind of success for that matter, the one force that brings good fortune is you. Many women count on marrying rich to

be financially-free such as Eddie Murphy’s ex-wife and Anna Nichole Smith who married an oil-mogul 62years her senior. Others hope to win the lottery like Amanda Clayton, the woman in Michigan who continued to collect food stamps even though she won a million dollars in the lottery These news stories can make you think it ’s possible to get rich with a little luck, but don’t ignore the truth behind these fairytales . After all , Anna Nicole Smith’s life did not have a happy ending, Eddie Murphy’s wife lost all her money, and people were so angry at Amanda Clayton for continuing to receive food stamps that she received a lot of negative buzz online and Michigan authorities took away her food stamp privileges. Plus, Amanda used her winnings to immediately buy a new car and a new home to live in - liabilities that will take cash out of her pocket .

Relying on others is not the way to become financially-free. And it ’s certainly not what the founders of International Women’s Day had in mind when they created the holiday we celebrated last week.

Come on, ladies –It’s Rising Time! Are you hoping that Prince Charming or that winning lottery ticket will show up some day? Even worse, are you ignoring your financial situation and your future?

Wake up Sleeping Beauty! Remember, “luck” and “hope” are four-letter words . It’s time to stop hoping and start doing… so instead of thinking of a four-leaf clover this week, think of a triangle - the Triple -A Triangle™ of Aspire, Acquire and Apply.

Share Your Financial Education with Others Educational Poverty for Women is a Worldwide Reality

In previous posts , I’ve talked about poverty rates among women over the age of 65 and the grim reality for those who don’t start taking their financial education seriously . And while financial poverty is a significant threat to most women in the United States, educational poverty is an overwhelming nightmare for women worldwide . Are you taking your access to financial education for granted? If you are reading this, you can get the information you need to change your lives and pursue financial freedom with the click of a mouse. You are lucky. But many women throughout the world are illiterate with no access to any kind of education or future of financial freedom. In fact , The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) estimates that the majority of the 67 million children out of school who live in rural areas are girls and “the least likely of any social group to be in school or to ever gain access to education.” In addition, UNESCO states that

“improving education for women and girls in rural areas is a central issue both for achieving gender equality and for poverty eradication.” Without information, women cannot get the education they need to change their lives for the better. And the media is not helping. After looking at data promoted on International Women’s Day this past month, I noticed that getting necessary information to women, specifically through the media, is not happening as fast as it could. Specifically, UNESCO’s Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) maps the representation of women and men in news media worldwide in five- year increments . And the latest 2010 findings are disturbing. Here are a few: “Only 24% of the people questioned,

heard, seen, or read about in the written and audiovisual media are women;76% are men. Only 10% of stories quote or refer to relevant local , national, regional, or international legal instruments on

Ministry of God's Word Allow me to take you on an unforgettable journey, as your tour guide, through the Word of God, to look at three different ways how God’ s Word was spoken, from Old Testament prophets, Jesus Himself, and the New Testament church. This journey will take you from one revelation to another, and it will bring you to new heights in your ministry. It will open new dimensions in the Spirit for you and thus help you to preach with tremendous power on your words from here on .

He spoke while the Lord Jesus was on earth; and He continues to speak in the New Testament church. We learn from the Bible that God has a prime work to perform on this earth, which is, to utter His own Word. If the Word of God is taken away, then almost nothing is left of God’ s work. No word, no work. We must therefore recognize the place of God’s Word in His work. Once the Word is removed the work of God ceases immediately, for God operates through His Word; He treats His Word as His work.

Let ’s take a look at three kinds of ministry’ s;

The work of God is filled with His Word. Gen 1, John 1.

1)The Old Testament ministers of the Word; The prophets

How does God utter His Word? This

2)The minister of the Word in the gospels; The Lord Jesus 3)The ministry of the Word in the New Testament; The Apostles ‘’Acts

6,4 – ‘’But we will devote ourselves…to the ministry of the Word. The matter of serving people with God’s Word is called the ministry of the Word; the person who so serves is called a minister. ‘’Ministry’’ points to the matter, while ‘’minister’’ speaks of the person. The ministry of the Word occupies an important place in the work of God. There are definite principles to be learned by those who preach the Word of God and serve people with God’ s Word. From the Old Testament time to the New, God always is found speaking. He spoke in the Old Testament days;

is a very special and quite remarkable method: God’s Word is spoken through the mouth of a man. Not only is there the Word in the Bible; there is also the minister of the Word. Were God to speak directly by Himself, He would have no need of the minister of the Word. Since His Word is delivered by man, the minister of the Word becomes a real concern, because if he walks in the flesh , he will also talk in the flesh . How very significant is man, therefore, in the work of God. God employs no way other than man to deliver His Word. God is in need of a special class of people to be the ministers of His Word, a people that lives a crucified live before Him, not my will be done but Your will be done. So briefly stated, one can find throughout the whole Bible three different kinds of people whom God uses to preach the Word. In the Old Testament God’ s Word is spread by the prophets; hence we have the ministry of the prophets . Once again, at the time of the earthly pilgrimage of the Lord Jesus, God’s Word became flesh; and thus we have the ministry of the Lord Jesus. And finally , in the New Testament God’s Word is propagated by the apostles ; with the result that we have the ministry of the apostles .

Isaiah, and Jeremiah whom God employed as mouthpieces in a way which was more advanced than that of Balaam and other prophets . The words which Moses wrote were mainly what God had commanded him. As the Lord spoke, so spoke Moses . Isaiah recorded vision after vision which the Lord had shown him. In this respect these prophets functioned under the same principle as Balaam. But in another respect Moses and Isaiah were quite different from Balaam. For we know that whenever Balaam himself came forward, his personal feeling was so wrong that he was condemned before God. While under revelation, Balaam spoke the Word of God; but as soon as he spoke by himself, he manifested sin , error and darkness. This was not true of Moses . Though he largely spoke according to what God commanded, yet there were times before God when he spoke as he felt . During these occasions he was not looked upon as doing anything wrong; instead, his word was recognized as also being God’s Word. This shows that Moses was more used of God than was Balaam. The same is true of Isaiah. Most of his prophecies came directly from the visions he received from God, but sometimes he himself began to speak. David and Jeremiah expressed their own feelings before God even more than Moses and Isaiah. All of these prophets approached the way of the later New Testament ministers; even so, they acted mostly under the same principles as the rest of the Old Testament prophets . They spoke when the Word of God came to them.

In other words, God merely employed the man’ s mouth to utter His word. This is typical of the Old Testament ministers of the Word. The Holy Spirit gave the word to a particular individual and so controlled that person that there could be no error in God’ s Word as propagated by Him. Though God used the person, there was little, if Written by : any human element involved in this type of revelation. Man merely spoke Japie Stoffberg the Word of God without adding anything to it. Nevertheless, in the Old Testament we do find people such as Moses, David,

Believe in yourself and in your dreams We are going to have a look at Josef and his dreams. The story of Joseph is found in Genesis 37. Joseph is the second youngest son in the household of Jacob. They are twelve brothers and a sister. Joseph is the favorite son of Jacob and Jacob made him a special garment. At the age of seventeen, Joseph had a good impression of himself. Now Joseph had a dream and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him still more.

We [brothers] were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright, and behold, your sheaves stood round about my sheaf and bowed down!

8

His brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? Or are you going to have us as your subjects and dominate us? And they hated him all the more for his dreams and for what he said.

9

But Joseph dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers [also]. He said, See here, I have dreamed again, and behold, [this time not only] eleven stars [but also] the sun and the moon bowed down and did reverence to me!

10

And he told it to his father [as well as] his brethren. But his father rebuked him and said to him, What is the meaning of this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow down ourselves to the earth and do homage to you?

11

Joseph's brothers envied him and were jealous of him, but his father observed the saying and pondered over it. From the above verses can be seen clearly Joseph was not popular among his brothers. Not even his dreams were acceptable. Your dreams that you have are many times not acceptable to people. Family members and friends will stand in your way and try to prevent it manifestation. Joseph's dreams came from God and nothing could stop them to manifest. When you know deep in your hart that the dreams come from God and this is the plan for your life, nothing can stop it to realize. Written by : Christine Meintjes
