The Body Once again, this year Het Nieuwe Instituut has devised a theme to give direction to its programme of exhibi­ tions and activities. The insti­tute’s previous thema­tic programmes have included ‘2014-1914: Conflict and Innovation’ about a hundred years of modernity and ‘World’s Fairs’, which examined issues of national identity and national representation. In 2016 the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro provide the inspiration for a programme devoted to the human body.

It examines not only the physical achievements of individual athletes but also the crowds of people who are monitored, analysed and manipulated as a collec­ tive body by advanced technologies during an event such as Rio 2016. Twenty-four hours per day. Technolo­ gical innovations have created a situation in which the body of the citizen and that of the state, the city and the public realm can be more efficiently moulded into an ideal shape. The body is being designed at all levels and the media plays a crucial role in recording and pro­ pagating these innovations.

For the exhibition The Life Fair, Agata Jaworska and Giovanni Innella have assembled numerous products and services that enable visitors to experience how the human body has become a battlefield of varied and of­ ten conflicting forces, played out on the boundaries be­ tween politics, economics, ethics, design and technolo­ gy. In Munich 1972, Marten Kuijpers explores how West Germany employed the design disciplines to present itself as a modern, democratic and culturally aware na­ tion during the 1972 Olympics. Lastly, in the installation Control Syntax Rio, Mark Wasiuta and Farzin Lotfi-Jam show how the Centro de Operacoes Rio (COR) observes and analyses Rio de Janeiro twenty-four hours per day via a network of weather stations, traffic cameras, mo­ bile telephone conversations, social media, healthcare centres and local observers in order to intervene when necessary. These are just a few of the ways in which we are addressing the theme of the Olympic Games and the disciplining of the body in our extensive programme.

Ook dit jaar heeft Het Nieuwe Instituut een jaarthema geformuleerd dat richting geeft aan een tentoonstellings- en activiteitenprogramma. Eerder ontwikkelden wij de programma’s 2014-1914: Conflict en Innovatie, over honderd jaar moderniteit, en de Wereldtentoonstelling, waarin vraagstukken als nationale identiteit en nationale representatie aan de orde kwamen. In 2016 vormen de Olympische Spelen van Rio de Janeiro de aanleiding voor een programma gewijd aan het lichaam.

Hierin staat niet alleen het lichaam van de individuele atleet centraal, maar ook de mensenmassa die gedurende een evenement als Rio 2016 door middel van geavanceerde technologieën als een collectief lichaam wordt gemonitord, geanalyseerd en gemanipuleerd. Vierentwintig uur per dag. Innovaties hebben ertoe geleid dat zowel het lichaam van de burger als dat van de openbare ruimte, de stad en de staat, gaandeweg efficiënter naar een ideaalbeeld kunnen worden ge­vormd. Zo ontstaan er op alle niveaus nieu­we, ontworpen lichamen, en media spelen een essentiële rol in het vastleggen en verspreiden van die vernieuwing.

Voor de tentoonstelling The Life Fair verzamelden Agata Jaworska en Giovanni Innella vele producten en diensten waarmee zij de bezoeker laten ervaren hoe het menselijke lichaam op het snijvlak tussen politiek, economie, ethiek, design en technologie een slagveld van uiteenlopende en vaak conflicterende krachten is geworden. Marten Kuijpers onderzocht hoe West-Duitsland zich tijdens de Olympische Spelen van 1972 presenteerde als een moderne, democratische en cultuurbewuste natie, en de ontwerpdisci­ plines hierbij werden ingezet. In de installatie Con­trol Syntax Rio tenslotte, laten Mark Wasiuta en Farzin Lotfi-Jam zien hoe het Centro de Operacoes Rio (COR) vierentwintig uur per dag de miljoenenstad Rio de Janeiro observeert en analyseert via een netwerk van weerstations, verkeerscamera’s, mobiel telefoonverkeer, sociale media, gezondheidsinstanties en lokale waarnemers, om daar waar nodig te kunnen ingrijpen.

Dit zijn enkele voorbeelden van de manier waarop het thema van de Olympische Spelen en de disciplinering van het lichaam in een uitgebreid programma door ons wordt geadresseerd.

THE LIFE FAIR New Body Products

With universal themes such as Birth, Work, Sex, Security and Health, the exhibition The Life Fair.

New Body Products explores how the quest for an optimal body has developed into a highly competitive market. First and foremost in the development of goods and services: commercial parties whose products exploit the fears and desires underlying our physical capacities and vulnerabilities. But governments and NGOs also stand to benefit from our wellbeing, especially when it is connected with collective interests such as the formation of an open or indeed a fully disciplined society. And so they will try to condition us. Artists and designers then introduce their own agendas into this diverse range of options. The perfecting of the body is increasingly the subject of critical discussion and imagination. At the intersection of politics, economics, ethics, design and technology, the human body has become a battlefield of varied and often conflicting forces.

De tentoonstelling The Life Fair.

New Body Products presenteert aan de hand van een reeks universele thema’s – zoals geboorte, werk, seks, veiligheid en gezondheid – hoe het streven naar het optimale lichaam zich tot een hoogst competitieve markt heeft ontwikkeld.

Natuur­lijk allereerst voor commerciële partijen die met hun producten inspelen op de allerindividueelste angsten en verlangens omtrent het eigen lichaam. Maar ook overheden en ngo’s hebben veel te winnen bij een verbeterd zelfbeeld, zodra dat gekoppeld is aan collectieve belangen zoals de vorming van een open of juist een volledig gedisciplineerde samenleving. The Life Fair laat aan de hand van onder meer kritische bijdragen van kunstenaars en ontwerpers de bezoeker ervaren hoe het menselijke lichaam op het snijvlak tussen politiek, economie, ethiek, design en technologie een slagveld van uiteenlopende en vaak conflicterende krachten is geworden.

CONTROL SYNTAX RIO Monitoring the Collective Body

The city of Rio de Janeiro has an advanced command and control centre from which various scenarios – from traffic jams to acts of terrorism and natural disasters – can be predicted and potentially prevented. The command and control centre was opened long before the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Games. The Centro de Operações Rio (COR) monitors urban traffic movements, people flows, weather conditions, calamities and health risks at all hours of the day. It collects data from weather stations, traffic cameras, mobile apps, social media, health organisations, and even local observers. This data is analysed with the help of algorithms and the centre acts to neutralise potentially hazardous situations. The installation Control Syntax Rio shows how this Olympic city is being read as a matrix of potential calamities and the impact this has on the social climate of the city.

De stad Rio de Janeiro beschikt over een geavanceerd commando- en controlecentrum, van waaruit allerlei scenario’s – van verkeersfiles tot terroristische acties en natuurrampen – worden voorspeld en mogelijk voorkomen. Het Centro de Operacoes Rio (COR) werd al geruime tijd voor de Wereldkampioenschappen Voetbal (2014) en de Olympische Spelen van 2016 in gebruik genomen. Vanuit dit centrum worden vierentwintig uur per dag stedelijke verkeersbewegingen, mensenstromen, weersomstandigheden, calamiteiten en gezondheidsrisico’s in kaart gebracht via weerstations, verkeerscamera’s, mobiel telefoonverkeer, sociale media, gezondheidsinstanties en zelfs lokale waarnemers. Met behulp van algoritmen worden de verzamelde data geanalyseerd en vervolgens grijpt het centrum waar nodig in om potentieel gevaarlijke situaties tijdig te neutraliseren. De installatie Control Syntax Rio laat zien hoe de stad wordt opgevat als een matrix van eventuele calamiteiten en welke onvoorziene en complexe gevolgen dit kan hebben voor haar inwoners.

SPACE EMBODIED The Russian Art of Movement 1920-1930 In the early twentieth century, the human body was the subject of unprecedented artistic experimentation. In Russia, where the revolution overturned society and, with it, all the arts, the avant-garde devoted itself to the creation of a new, free humanity. The installation Space Embodied concentrates on the heritage of Russian ‘free dance’, which rejected the academic patterns of classical ballet in favour of natural movements. This dance form inspired artists and photographers to create an innovative visual idiom. They explored the relationship of the dancing body to space, music and the politics of the Soviet Union. The blossoming of free dance did not last long. In the 1930s the majority of the dance studios were closed down by the communist government because they were too ‘formalist’. Space Embodied brings together images of this extraordinarily productive partnership between choreographers, dancers, set designers and photographers in the 1920s.

Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw wordt het menselijk lichaam meer dan ooit tevoren het onderwerp van artistiek experiment. Zeker in Rusland, waar de revolutie de complete maatschappij en dus ook de kunst op zijn kop zet, richt de avant-garde zich op de creatie van de nieuwe, vrije mens. De installatie Space Embodied concentreert zich op de erfenis van de Russische ‘vrije dans’, waarin natuurlijke bewegingen werden verkozen boven de academische patronen van het klassieke ballet. Deze dansvorm inspireerde kunstenaars en fotografen tot een vernieuwende representatie. Zij onderzochten de relatie van het dansende lichaam tot de ruimte, de muziek en de politiek van het revolutionaire Rusland. De bloei van de vrije dans was van korte duur. Al in de jaren dertig werden de meeste dansstudio’s op last van de communistische machthebbers gesloten, omdat ze te ‘formalistisch’ zouden zijn. Space Embodied toont de beelden die de uitzonderlijk productieve samenwerking tussen dansers en fotografen, scenografen en choreografen in de jaren twintig opleverde.

MUNICH 1972 The Design of a Democratic Body EN

The 1972 Olympic Games offered the host country, West Germany, an unrivalled opportunity to portray itself to the world as a modern, democratic and culturally aware nation. With the 1972 Olympics, West Germany wanted to draw a line under its tainted history and erase the memory of Hitler’s ‘Nazi Games’ of 1936 in Berlin. Various design disciplines played a central role in the preparations for the games. Architecture, design and landscape architecture by Günther Behnisch, Hans Hollein and Frei Otto, landscape architect Günther Grzimek and designer Otl Aicher were integrated in a total design intended to exude openness and inclusivity. This carefully constructed image was marred two weeks into the games when eight members of the Black September Organisation infiltrated the Olympic Village and took the Israeli team hostage. The exhibition Munich 1972 tells this controversial story ­through the lens of design, by contrasting the narratives and aesthetic strategies of the organisers with the tactics deployed for their disruption.

Het was een uitgelezen kans om de herinnering aan Hitlers ‘Nazi-Spelen’ van Berlijn 1936 te laten vervagen achter een nieuw, hoopvol beeld. De verschillende ontwerpdisciplines speelden­daarbij een centrale rol. 51 SPRINTS

The interactive documentary 51 Sprints recounts the history of one of the great highlights of the modern Olympic Games: the 100-metre sprint.

This history is, of course, connected with record-breaking achievements and legendary finals, but in 51 Sprints the emphasis is on the athletes as symbolic figures who represent their nation, race or gender. The entire Olympic event – which promotes the idea of equality for all – has increasingly become a projection screen for national status, the superiority of systems, the ultimate physical preparation and the emancipation of minorities. The intensity of the sprint finals makes the 100-metre race especially mediagenic, and it offers the most distinct platform to confront the rest of the world with such issues. 51 Sprints shines a critical light on the media-dominated reality of the Olympic Games by incorporating a single recording of each sprint final (men’s, women’s and paralympians) in two different narrative structures – one linear and one inter­active­– between which the viewer can alternate.

De interactieve, online documentaire 51 Sprints ­(www.51sprints.com)­ vertelt de geschiedenis van het koningsnummer van de Olympische Spelen: de 100 meter hardlopen. Een historie die verbonden is met records en legendarische finales. In 51 Sprints ligt de nadruk echter op de atleet als symbolische figuur, die naast zijn persoonlijke prestatie tegelijkertijd ook een ras, natie of sekse vertegenwoordigt. Het hele Olympische evenement – dat gelijkheid en broederschap vooropstelt – is steeds na­drukkelijker een projectievlak geworden voor de status van landen, de perfectionering van het lichaam en de emancipatie van minderheden. De explosieve intensiteit van de sprintfinales maakt de 100 meter niet alleen tot een van de meest­populaire onderdelen, maar ook mediageniek. En dus bieden de sprintfinales het meest uitgesproken podium om de rest van de wereld met de symbolische rol van de atleet te confronteren. 51 Sprints belicht op kritische wijze de gemediatiseerde ­werkelijkheid van de Spelen door de sprintfinales (vrouwen, mannen, paralympiërs) te verwerken in twee afzonderlijke vertelwijzen, lineair en interactief, waartussen de kijker kan afwisselen.

PLATFORM Body/Space Most exhibitions temporarily bring together a range of different, often extraordinary objects. This exhibition deviates from that principle by focussing on a single, common object. It examines in depth the different uses and meanings of this everyday object, that is available in countless variants. In a succession of four installations, Platform. Body/ Space explores the yoga mat, the beach towel, the tatami mat and the prayer rug.

Although there is little difference in their physical characteristics, the background to each of these objects produces a totally different meaning. But what they have in common is that they provide the perfect conditions for sharing ideas, spreading images and giving performances. Platform delves into an object that can be seen as a form of architecture, and the wealth of meanings attached to it.

Tentoonstellingen worden over het algemeen gevormd door tijdelijk verschillende, vaak bijzondere objecten bijeen te brengen. Deze presentatie wijkt van dit principe af door aandacht te vragen voor slechts één object. Vervolgens wordt uitvoerig stilgestaan bij de verschillen in gebruik en betekenis van dit dage­lijkse object dat talloze verschijningsvormen kent. In vier opeenvolgende installaties gaat Platform. Body/Space nader in op de yogamat, het badlaken, de tatami en het gebedskleed. En hoewel de uiterlijke kenmerken per keer nauwelijks verschillen, is de achtergrond van ieder van deze gedaantes aanleiding voor een totaal andere betekenis. Overeenkomstig is dat in weerwil van de verschillende betekenissen dit bescheiden object de vereiste condities biedt om ideeën te kunnen delen, beelden te verspreiden en voorstellingen te geven.

Platform gaat uitvoerig in op een object dat ook wel wordt opgevat als een fundamentele vorm van architectuur en de rijkdom aan betekenissen die hieraan verbonden is.

The mission to approach all design disciplines from an integral perspec­tive and thus to explore the innovative potential of architecture, design and digital culture has led to the creation of a unique institution. An institution that questions the familiar and that exhibits and discusses new developments, mapping, exhibiting and critiquing our rapidly changing world in a variety of ways.

E-sports, gaming at professional competitive level, is hugely popular. Game researcher René Glas reflects on this new form of sport that no longer centres on the physical body. With live commentary on a League of Legends match. In collaboration with the Expertise Centre at Utrecht University.

Our body is both our strength and our weakness. It is the thing with which we express and live our notion of ‘self’, but it also confines us: the body is the instrument through which society and the state define us. Within the context of the exhibition The Life Fair: New Body Products, this evening explores how we can claim the right to define our (changing) selves, and how cultural, technological and legislative frameworks can both limit and permit this.

The Life Fair Are all the exhibited products real and available?

How free are we?

The exhibition The Life Fair takes the form of a trade fair offering products and services connected with various aspects of life such as love, sex, birth, identity, health, security and death. Curators Agata Jaworska and Giovanni Innella give visitors the opportunity to explore possibilities for improving their own bodies and lives but also confront them with the interests behind the products and services on offer.

Giovanni Innella: The Life Fair presents products and services of companies, governments and organisations that have an influence on our bodies and our lives. We realise that our bodies and lives are an arena for our free will - the idea of the freedom of the individual - and, for society’s collective interests, subject to government control and influence. At the same time, our bodies and our lives are a marketplace for companies, where they can offer the products and services that help us to improve ourselves and perform better. This leads to the essential question: how free are we?

Agata Jaworska: ‘The exhibition explores the extent to which our bodies are entangled with technology. Tech­ nology has no agency, but the parties who develop it do.

How are the interests of these organisations entangled in with our lives when we use their technologies to mo­

nitor, control or improve ourselves? How do they expand or limit the scope of our freedom? The exhibition tries to reveal the underlying political and financial interests of the actors who offer these products and services.’

How is this critical layer made visible or explained in the exhibition?

GI: That was exactly why we decided to give the exhibition the form of a trade fair. We didn’t simply want to exhibit projects. We also wanted to make visitors aware of the fact that there are companies, governments or NGOs behind these products and services that are not always immediately apparent. The trade fair model allows us to show what lies behind the goods on offer.

GI: Some of them are speculative, but there are also real projects that speculate about their actual aim by trying to sell us something. You could say that the entire exhibition is speculative, but that’s primarily because the world we live in is speculative.

AJ: Some of the more speculative content comes from commercial companies. An example is SwanLuv, a star­ tup that was offering to pay up to $10,000 for a wedding.

The company would asses online data in order to decide which applicants receive funding. They would then cal­ culate an interest rate based on the chance that the cou­ ple would separate in the future. In case of a divorce, the couple would have to pay back the sum plus interest. The service was due to be launched on Valentine’s Day, but the website is no longer online.

The Olympic Games are the reason why Het Nieuwe Instituut is focussing on the body. What role does the athlete’s body play in the exhibition?

GI: Sport is about disciplining, monitoring and quantifying the body in order to enable it to perform better and make it more competitive. I think these terms are also applicable to how we live our lives. Many of the products in the exhibition help you to discipline and improve your body and thus promise you a successful life.

AJ: The next step after optimisation is commodifica­ tion. Data generated while moving and living can be of value to other parties. In the exhibition we feature Bitwal­ king, a company that quantifies human movement and translates it into a global currency. Your movement can directly be translated into monetary value. But you can also see resistance to these kinds of developments. That resistance manifests itself on the one hand in strategies for evading forms of monitoring and identification and, on the other hand, in pushing the boundaries of social conventions. The exhibition includes a deadly rollercoas­ ter. During the ride your body is submitted to such ex­ treme forces that you cannot survive it. This project by the artist Julijonas Urbonas is about euthanasia, about whether we are free to choose our own death.

So placing a product or service in a particular section ensures that it is given a certain significance or context?

GI: The placement in a particular category or creating connections results in a critical discourse.

AJ: We make the tension between the body and its ex­ ternal forces visible. A central question in the exhibition is: what is the relationship between individual choice and collective control?

GI: Visitors will realise that they play three roles: individual, citizen and consumer.

AJ: We show fragments from our daily lives that exert an influence on who we are or could be, on how free we are to design our own lives. And we also focus attenti­ on on the role that technologies, legislation and human rights play in this. One of the organisations featured in the exhibition is Transgender Europe, which promotes the rights of individuals who want to change their identi­ ty. They make a plea for greater fluidity whereas govern­ ments, in the ‘interest’ of security, want to fix individuals with a rigid identity in order to be sure they know who they are dealing with. The Life Fair introduces several such polarising interests in our society.

What role does design play in The Life Fair?

GI: We don’t focus on the aesthetics of design, its userfriend­liness or sustainability. We use design as a means to understand what all these objects and services tell us about the world: design as a manifestation of bigger questions and needs.

How are the various themes such as love, work and death represented in the exhibition?

AJ: The fair is divided into sections, which represent universal life themes. We try to emphasise the extent to which these domains are entangled. Take for example, the rising trend of corporate wellness programs. Corpo­ rations such as BP offer their employees fitness trackers along with rewards for behaviour that is good for their health. In an effort to attract more women, Apple and Facebook were the first employers to offer their female employees egg freezing as part of their benefit package.

A woman’s peak fertility often overlaps with her prime working years. One of the points we want to make is the fact that our employees are entangled with our health and our family lives, just as much as governments are.

Hoe vrij zijn wij?

De tentoonstelling The Life Fair neemt de vorm aan van een beurs waar producten en diensten worden aangeboden die verbonden zijn met verschillende aspecten van het leven zoals liefde, seks, geboorte, identiteit, werk, gezondheid, veiligheid en dood. Samenstellers Agata Jaworska en Giovanni Innella geven bezoekers de mogelijkheid zich te oriënteren op de mogelijkheden om hun eigen lichaam en leven te verbeteren, maar confronteren hen ook met de belangen achter de aangeboden producten en diensten.

The Life Fair Hoe wordt deze kritische laag in de tentoonstelling zichtbaar gemaakt of uitgelegd?

GI: Dat was precies de reden om de tentoonstelling de vorm van een beurs te geven. We wilden niet alleen projecten tentoonstellen. We wilden de bezoeker ook bewust maken van het feit dat er bedrijven, overheden en ngo’s achter deze producten en diensten zitten en dat deze belangen kunnen hebben die niet altijd meteen zichtbaar zijn. Het model van de beurs geeft ons de mogelijkheid om te laten zien wie er achter de aangeboden waar zit.

Zijn alle getoonde producten en diensten echt en beschikbaar?

GI: Sommige zijn speculatief. Maar er zijn ook echte projecten die speculeren over hun werkelijke doel, door ons iets te willen verkopen. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat de hele tentoonstelling speculatief is, maar dat komt vooral omdat de wereld waarin wij leven speculatief is.

AJ: De meest speculatieve inhoud komt interessant genoeg van commerciële bedrijven. Een voorbeeld daar­ van is SwanLuv, een start-up die aanbood om je trouwerij te betalen, voor een bedrag tot wel 10.000 dollar. Het be­ drijf zou het onlinecontact tussen de aanstaande echtge­ noten onderzoeken om te bepalen welke kandidaten ze zouden financieren. Hieruit volgde dan een rentebereke­ ning gebaseerd op de kans dat het stel in de toekomst zou scheiden. Als het huwelijk vervolgens inderdaad zou stranden, moesten de echtelieden het bedrag mét ren­ te terugbetalen. Deze dienst zou op Valentijnsdag wor­ den gelanceerd, maar de website bestaat inmiddels niet meer.

Giovanni Innella: The Life Fair toont producten en diensten van bedrijven, overheden en organisaties die allemaal invloed claimen op ons lichaam en ons leven. We realiseren ons dat onze lichamen en onze levens het speelveld zijn van enerzijds onze vrije wil - het idee van de vrijheid van het individu - en anderzijds de gedeelde belangen van het collectief, de samenleving, waar de overheid over waakt. Tegelijkertijd vormen ons lichaam en ons leven een markt voor bedrijven, waar zij hun producten en diensten aanbieden waarmee wij onszelf kunnen verbeteren en die ons helpen om beter te presteren. Dit leidt tot de essentiële vraag: hoe vrij zijn wij?

Agata Jaworska: De tentoonstelling is een zoektocht naar de mate waarin onze lichamen verstrengeld raken met technologieën. Technologieën hebben zelf geen zeg­ genschap, maar partijen die ze ontwikkelen wel. Hoe ra­ ken de belangen van deze bedrijven, organisaties of over­ heden verweven met onze lichamen, wanneer wij deze technologieën inzetten om ons lichaam te verbeteren, controleren of te monitoren. Wat betekent dit voor onze individuele handelingsvrijheid en de zeggenschap over ons lichaam en ons leven. We kijken dus naar de achter­ liggende economische en politieke intenties van de acto­ ren die deze producten en diensten aanbieden.

De Olympische Spelen vormen de aanleiding voor Het Nieuwe Instituut om de aandacht op het lichaam te richten. Op welke manier speelt het lichaam van de sporter een rol in de tentoonstelling?

in op je lichaam, dat je deze niet overleeft. Dit project van de kunstenaar Julijonas Urbonas gaat over euthanasie, over de vraag of je als mens vrij bent je eigen dood te kiezen.

Op welke manier worden die verschillende thema’s, zoals liefde, werk en dood, in de tentoonstelling gepresenteerd?

AJ: De beurs is verdeeld in hoofdstukken, die ieder een universeel levensthema representeren. We laten zien in welke mate deze domeinen met elkaar verweven raken.

Neem bijvoorbeeld de trend van corporate gezondheids­ programma’s voor werknemers. Bedrijven als BP bieden hun werknemers fitheidmeters aan en belonen gezond gedrag. In een poging om meer vrouwen aan te trekken waren Apple en Facebook de eerste werkgevers die hun vrouwelijke werknemers de mogelijkheid gaven om hun eitjes te laten invriezen, als onderdeel van hun arbeids­ voorwaardenpakket. Zwangerschappen vallen meestal in de meest productieve levensfase van de mens. Een van de dingen die we willen laten zien is dat werkgevers, net als de overheid, invloed uitoefenen op onze gezondheid en familieleven.

GI: De bezoeker zal zich realiseren dat hij een drievoudige rol vervult: hij is een individu, maar ook burger en consument.

AJ: We tonen fenomenen uit ons dagelijks leven die invloed uitoefenen op wie wij zijn en zouden kunnen zijn, op hoe vrij we zijn in het vormgeven van ons leven.

Daarbij vragen we aandacht voor de rol die technolo­ gieën, maar ook wetgeving en mensenrechten daarin spelen. Een van de organisaties in de tentoonstelling is Transgen­der E ­ urope. Deze organisatie zet zich in voor de rechten van individuen die van identiteit willen verande­ ren. Zij houden een pleidooi voor een grotere fluïditeit op gendergebied. Terwijl overheden, in het belang van onze veiligheid, individuen juist willen kunnen vastpinnen op een rigide identiteit, om zeker te weten wie ze voor zich hebben. The Life Fair introduceert een aantal van derge­ lijke polariserende behoeften in onze samenleving.

Welke rol speelt design in The Life Fair?

GI: We richten ons niet op de esthetiek van design, de gebruiksvriendelijkheid of de duurzaamheid ervan. We gebruiken design als middel om te begrijpen wat al die objecten en diensten ons vertellen over de wereld. Design als manifestatie van grotere vragen en behoeftes.

Dus de plaatsing van een product of dienst in een van de hoofdstukken zorgt ervoor dat het een bepaalde betekenis of context meekrijgt?

GI: Door de plaatsing in een bepaalde categorie of door combinaties te maken ontstaat er een kritisch discours.

AJ: Zo maken we het spanningsveld tussen het li­ chaam en de krachten van buiten zichtbaar. Een centrale vraag in de tentoonstelling is: hoe verhouden individuele keuzevrijheid en collectieve controle zich tot elkaar?

GI: Sport gaat over het disciplineren, monitoren en kwantificeren van het lichaam, om het beter te laten presteren en competitiever te maken. Ik denk dat die termen ook toepasbaar zijn op de manier waarop wij nu leven. Veel van de producten die in de tentoonstelling te zien zijn, helpen je je lichaam te disciplineren en te verbeteren, en beloven je daarmee een succesvol bestaan.

AJ: De volgende stap is de economisering van je eigen lichaam. De data die wij verzamelen tijdens het bewegen en leven kunnen van waarde zijn voor derden. In de ten­ toonstelling presenteren we Bitwalking. Dat is een be­ drijf dat menselijke bewegingen kwantificeert en in een globale valuta vertaalt. Je fysieke prestatie kan direct in geldwaarde worden omgezet. Tegelijkertijd zie je verzet ontstaan tegen dergelijke ontwikkelingen. Dat verzet uit zich enerzijds in strategieën om te ontkomen aan vormen van monitoring en identificatie. En anderzijds in het op­ rekken van maatschappelijke conventies. Zo is in de ten­ toonstelling een ontwerp voor een dodelijke rollercoaster te zien. Tijdens de rit werken er zulke extreme krachten BODY MAGAZINE

Open and inclusive The exhibition Munich 1972.

The Design of a Democratic Body explores how the organisers of the 1972 Olympics in Munich employed the full range of design disciplines to present West Germany as an open, friendly and democratic society. Curator Marten Kuijpers and graphic designer David Bennewith are impressed by this faith in the power of design, but Munich 1972 also shows how this carefully created image was destroyed overnight.

Munich 1972 Marten Kuijpers: The organisers’ aims stemmed from a desire to erase the dark memory of the Nazi Olympics of 1936 in Berlin. They wanted to share an optimistic image of Germany with the world. Graphic designer Otl Aicher, head of the design team for the 1972 games and responsible for the entire visual identity, had an ambivalent stance in relation to the 1936 Olympics. He loathed the image that Hitler had created but embraced the strategy of the gesamtkunstwerk. Together with other designers, he developed a total design for Munich that can be seen as the mirror image of Berlin in 1936.

Aicher designed a colour scheme inspired by the Bavarian landscape: the clear blue and white of the sky, green for the meadows and silver for Bavaria’s many lakes. The colours red and gold, which played an important role in 1936, were strictly forbidden. The architecture firm Behnisch & Partner designed a wonderful, light “non-architecture” that merged seamlessly with the landscape: a clear example of the quest for an image that was the polar opposite of the monumental architecture of 1936. The designers talked about the games as an enormous open-air theatre in which “life could play itself” and the athletes and visitors could mingle freely irrespective of their nationality, origins or beliefs.

However, this idealistic, democratic image of an open society was completely undermined when, during the night of 4-5 September, members of the Black September organisation managed to infiltrate the Olympic Village and took the Israeli team hostage with the aim of drawing attention to the Palestinian cause. As one of them later explained: “It was like painting the name of Palestine on a mountain that can be seen from the four corners of the earth”. Black September demanded the release of 236 prisoners from Israeli and German prisons. The attack ended in a bloodbath in which eleven Israeli athletes and officials, a policeman and five members of Black September were killed. In the exhibition we look at the reversal of the image of Munich 1972 from the perspective of design.

David Bennewith: This moment, in which the care­fully considered design system was completely undermined, is, for me as a designer, very confronting but also fasci­ nating. It has strongly influenced my approach to graphic design. No matter how hard you work to produce a per­ fect design, it can always be misunderstood or even used to promote an entirely different message.

How do you tell this story in the exhibition?

MK: There is an image of the attack that sums everything up and which has a central place in the exhibition. It is a photo of a conversation that took place outside the door of the apartment where Black September was holding the Israeli team hostage. We see Anneliese Graes, a female police officer, speaking with Issa, the Black September spokesman. The police delegate represents the laidback ideals of the organisers of the Olympics: a woman, dressed in the light blue of Aicher’s colour scheme. Opposite her is a man with a blacked-up face: an outsider who has infiltrated the “open and inclusive” world of the Olympic terrain. In the exhibition, spatially designed by Bart Guldemond, we explore in depth the elements that made up the visual identity of the Munich Olympics. For example, in addition to the colour scheme, Aicher was also responsible

for the famous pictograms that went on to be used in later editions of the games. With help from Frei Otto, Behnisch & Partner designed an enormous glass roof for the architecture imbedded in the landscape. That landscape was designed by landscape architect Günter Grzimek. His design was very open: visitors were allowed to move freely across the terrain.

People were invited to create their own paths, a system that was obviously completely designed.

Were the designs for the 1972 Olympics typical of the 1970s and an example of what design was capable of at that moment in time?

MK: In fact I think it marked the end of an era.

DB: Of modernist design. It was modernist in its ratio­ nality and extremism.

MK: You could say that their enormous faith in the power of design was naïve, but it also expressed great beauty, which is in stark contrast to how these sorts of events are designed today. When the police psychologist advised them to make the fences higher and to top them with barbed wire, the organisers refused. They believed firmly in the pacifying effect of their open and inclusive strategy. The police didn’t carry weapons and were kitted out in light-blue uniforms. They were trained to respond to possible threats in a non-aggressive manner and to avoid conflicts.’

DB: The security dog was a dachshund, which was also the mascot for the games.

The exhibition’s subtitle is The Design of a Democratic Body. How does this relate to the story of Munich 1972?

DB: Both parties were looking for a form of democracy.

And both sides used abstraction. For me as a designer, this is nicely represented by the pictograms that Ai­ cher designed to represent the different Olympic sports equally within a system. Equality is one of the core valu­ es of the Olympics. These pictograms were abstracted images of the body. We recognise ourselves in them, but also others. Issa, the spokesman for Black September, painted his face black. For me, there is a connection bet­ ween his blacked-up face and the pictogram. He gave up his identity for a higher goal. But in the end we are all looking for the hero of the story. We look to individuals, to the Aichers and the Issas, and to the gold medal-win­ ning athletes.

MK: In 1974 Yasser Arafat gave an address to the United Nations. Despite the dramatic end to the attack, it had succeeded in gaining attention for the Palestinian cause.

The Design of a Democratic Body is te zien hoe de organisatie van de Olympische Spelen van 1972 in München alle ontwerpdisciplines inzette om West-Duitsland als een open, vriendelijke en democratische samenleving te presenteren. Grafisch ontwerper Otl Aicher, hoofd van het ontwerpteam van 1972 en verantwoordelijk voor de gehele visuele ‘gestaltung’, verhield zich op een ambivalente manier met de Olympische Spelen van 1936. Hij verafschuwde het beeld dat door Hitler was neergezet, maar omarmde tegelijkertijd de strategie van het gesamtkunstwerk. Samen met andere ontwerpers ontwikkelde hij voor München een totaalontwerp dat als een spiegelbeeld van Berlijn 1936 kan worden opgevat. Aicher ontwierp

Munich 1972 een kleurenschema, geïnspireerd op het Beierse landschap: het heldere blauw en wit van de lucht, groen van de weiden, en zilver van de vele meren in Beieren. De kleuren rood en goud, die een belangrijke rol speelden in 1936, waren streng verboden. Architectenbureau Behnisch & Partner ontwierp een prachtige, lichte “non-architectuur” die volkomen samenviel met het landschap. Een duidelijk voorbeeld van hoe er gezocht werd naar een beeld dat tegengesteld was aan de monumentale architectuur van 1936. De ontwerpers spraken over de Olympische Spelen als een enorm openluchttheater waarin “het leven zichzelf kon spelen”, en bezoekers en atleten elkaar vrij konden ontmoeten ongeacht hun nationaliteit, afkomst of overtuiging.

Dit idealistische, democratische beeld van een open samenleving werd echter totaal ondermijnd, toen in de nacht van 4 op 5 september leden van de Black September beweging het Olympische dorp wisten binnen te dringen en het Israëlische team gijzelden. Zij streden voor de Palestijnse zaak. “It was like painting the name of Palestine on a mountain that can be seen from the four corners of the earth”, zoals een van hen later uitlegde. Black September eiste de vrijlating van 236 gevangenen uit Israëlische en Duitse gevangenissen. De gijzeling eindigde in een bloedbad, waarbij elf Israëlische atleten en officials, een politieman en vijf gijzelnemers werden gedood. In de tentoonstelling kijken we naar de omkering van het beeld van München 1972, vanuit het perspectief van het ontwerp.

David Bennewith: Dit moment, waarop het zorgvul­ dig doordachte ontwerpsysteem helemaal wordt omge­ keerd, is voor mij als ontwerper zeer confronterend maar ook fascinerend; het heeft mijn benadering van het gra­ fisch ontwerp sterk beïnvloed. Hoe hard je ook je best doet om een perfect ontwerp te maken, het kan altijd verkeerd begrepen of zelfs gebruikt worden om een to­ taal andere boodschap te verkondigen.

Hoe vertellen jullie dit verhaal in de tentoonstelling?

MK: Er is een beeld van de gijzeling dat alles samenvat en dat een centrale plek in de tentoonstelling krijgt. Het is een foto van een gesprek dat plaatsvond voor de deur van het appartement waar Black September het Israëlische team in gijzeling hield. Daarop is te zien hoe politieagente Anneliese Graes spreekt met Luttif Afif, alias Issa, de woordvoerder van Black September. De afgevaardigde van de politie vertegenwoordigt het ontspannen ideaal van de organisatie van de Spelen: een vrouw, gekleed in het lichte blauw van Aichers kleurenschema. Tegenover haar een man, met een zwart geschminkt gezicht, een outsider die is binnengedrongen in de “open en inclusieve” wereld van het Olympische terrein.

We laten in de tentoonstelling, waar Bart Guldemond het ruim­telijk ontwerp voor maakte, uitgebreid de elementen van het totaalontwerp van de Spelen van München zien. Naast het kleurenschema was Aicher bijvoorbeeld verantwoordelijk voor de beroemde pictogrammen die ook voor latere afleveringen van de Spelen zijn gebruikt. Met hulp van Frei Otto ontwierp Behnisch & Partner een enorm glazen dak voor de in het landschap ingebedde architectuur. Dat landschap werd vormgegeven door landschapsarchitect Günter Grzimek. Zijn

ontwerp was heel open: het publiek moest zich vrij over het terrein kunnen verplaatsen. Mensen werden uitgenodigd om hun eigen olifantenpaadjes te maken, een systeem dat vanzelfsprekend compleet ontworpen was.

Was het geheel aan ontwerpen voor de Olympische Spelen in 1972 typisch voor de jaren zeventig en een voorbeeld van wat design vermocht op dat moment?

MK: Ik denk eerder dat hiermee het einde van een tijdperk werd gemarkeerd.

DB: Van het modernistische ontwerp. Het was moder­ nistisch in zijn rationaliteit en extremiteit.

MK: Je kunt dat enorme geloof in de kracht van design naïef noemen, maar er spreekt ook een grote schoonheid uit, dat in schril contrast staat met de manier waarop dit ­soort evenementen nu worden ontworpen. Het ontwerp voor ­München ging ver voorbij aan nation branding alleen. Toen de psycholoog van de politie adviseerde om de hekken hoger te maken en er prikkeldraad op te bevestigen, weigerde de ­organisatie dit. Ze geloofden heilig in de apaiserende werking van hun open en inclusieve strategie. De politie droeg geen wapens en kreeg lichtblauwe pakken aangemeten. Ze werden getraind om bij mogelijke dreiging op een non-agressieve te reageren en conflicten uit de weg te gaan.

De ondertitel van de tentoonstelling luidt The Design of a Democratic Body, hoe verhoudt die zich tot het verhaal van München 1972?

DB: Beide partijen zochten naar een vorm van democra­ tie. Beide kanten gebruikten daarbij abstractie. Voor mij als ontwerper wordt dit goed geïllustreerd door de pic­ togrammen die Aicher ontwierp om de verschillende olympische sporten in een gelijkwaardig systeem weer te geven. Gelijkheid is onderdeel van de Olympische gedachte. Deze pictogrammen bestonden uit geabstra­ heerde beelden van het lichaam. We herkennen onszelf erin, maar ook alle anderen.

Issa, de leider van Black September, had zijn gezicht zwart gemaakt. Voor mij is er een verband tussen zijn ge­ schminkte gezicht en het pictogram. Hij gaf zijn identi­ teit op voor een hoger doel. Maar uiteindelijk zoeken we allemaal naar de helden van het verhaal. We kijken naar de individuen, naar de Aichers en de Issa’s, en naar de Olympische sporters die een gouden medaille winnen.

MK: In 1974 gaf Arafat een toespraak voor de ­Verenigde Naties. Het was, ondanks de dramatische afloop van de gij­ zeling, gelukt om aandacht te vragen voor de Palestijnse zaak.

DB: De veiligheidshond was een teckel, dit was ook de mascotte van de Spelen.

Interactive Data Documentary The online documentary 51 Sprints explores the history of more than a hundred years of Olympic 100-metre sprint finals. The 51 finals not only show increasingly quick finishing times but also tell a story of emancipation and identity. The film’s initiator, Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, talks about the project’s background.

and body. Five ways in which the sprinter symbolises a certain group of people and represents a certain identity. The body is also an important theme. Since the Second World War there have been sports competitions for disabled people, initially organised for the war wounded. From 1960 they were officially recognised by the Olympic Committee under the name ‘Paralympic Games’. They take place after the Olympic Games and historically were ignored by the media.

Since 2008 media attention has grown enormously and in London the 2012 Paralympic Games were almost raised to the same level. Some people think it won’t be long before Paralympic athletes are part of the Olympic Games. For the disabled athletes this will mean recognition for ‘non-normative’ bodies.

The third part of the documentary is interactive.

How does the interactive component work?

We gathered an enormous amount of data about all the sprint finalists, such as origin, height, weight, education and gross national product of their countries of origin.

All this data enables us to make clusters in which you can compare people from different categories. So we know, for example, that on average, men are faster than women, but we can also extract many more averages from the enormous quantity of data. For example, you can calculate the average difference between those runners who had a sports scholarship and those who didn’t. Or you can compare runners from America and Europe. You can also calculate how much faster people from the African diaspora, for example from America and Jamaica, are than people of European origin.

The viewer of the documentary can add or remove factors and thus create fictional races. It creates a purely polemical, scientifically debatable collection of results.

shown. Obviously that’s rather a false distinction because even in a traditional, more static exhibition the viewer has to interpret the works, but within interactive media there’s more room for exchange.’

What does it mean for digital culture that Het Nieuwe Instituut aims to approach and exhibit the different disciplines in relation to each other?

‘From the perspective of digital culture it’s enormously enriching to be connected with a history that predates 1984 (one of the possible dates for the genesis of the internet). There is an abundance of critical net theory but also a lot of future-oriented speculation that lacks any kind of historical perspective. For architecture and design it’s good to see that the new technological means are not just en extension of the existing vocabulary but can also raise radically new questions. Take open source, for example. That’s a phenomenon from digital culture that has inspired new developments in architecture and design. The idea that you can share designs and work on them later with others comes from the affordances of digital media. The convergence of the different disciplines enables Het Nieuwe Instituut to follow such developments critically.’

Alongside architecture and design, digital culture is one of the ‘disciplines’ within Het Nieuwe In­ stituut. How does the institute aim to relate to the digital domain? Can you say something about that in connection with this interactive documentary?

How did the documentary 51 Sprints come about?

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer: The media reality of the Olympic ­Games fascinates me. The games are not only about sport but also, above all, about representation. The 100-metre sprint is a mediagenic component that illustrates that story perfectly.

It is also very compact: we ended up with 47 Olympic sprint finals and added four Paralympic sprints: a total of nine to ten minutes of sport. The 100-metre sprint is also literally an image of eight figures running across a bar chart. The image of the sprint final is itself a form of data visualisation.

What story do the various films of the 100-metre sprints tell?

The Olympic Games were originally “restricted to amateurs”, which meant that only those who were financially

independent could take part. The games began as a meeting of white men from a limited number of industrialised countries. Even so, the Olympic Games represented the idea of universal humanity. So, the white man stood for universal man. 51 Sprints shows how other groups that differed from the standard – workers, women, black people, people with disabilities – were gradually represented too. Firstly, it’s about the right to participate and then about the differences that previously dictated exclusion or inclusion and which part they play in your chance of winning.’

How do you tell such a complex story using such a simple phenomenon as the 100-metre sprint?

Artist/designer Yuri Veerman and I developed a three-part concept. The story begins with an introduction about the sprint final and the symbolism of the sprinter. The second part comprises five storylines: nation, class, race, gender

With this documentary I wanted to choose a form that is specific to digital culture. The interactive documentary is a format that belongs on the web. For me, 51 Sprints is an example of how to continue to develop one kind of digital practice.’

The digital domain now permeates everything, including architecture, design and art. You could say that it’s a medium rather than a specific culture. Is Het Nieuwe Instituut consciously looking for what is particular to the digital realm and what those specific characteristics can deliver?

We’re already a bit post-digital. There is no culture that isn’t influenced in one way or another by the digital realm and in that sense digital culture can be hard to define. One approach is to look at interactive forms that have flourished specifically in the digital context. Interactivity makes it possible to project your own subjective reading onto what’s being

Interactieve datadocumentaire De online documentaire 51 Sprints gaat over de geschiedenis van ruim honderd jaar honderd meter sprintfinales tijdens de Olympische Spelen. De 51 finales laten niet alleen steeds snellere eindtijden zien, maar vertellen ook een verhaal over emancipatie en identiteit. Initiator Klaas Kuitenbrouwer vertelt over de achtergronden van deze interactieve documentaire.

Hoe is de documentaire 51 Sprints ontstaan?

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer: De mediawerkelijkheid van de Olympische Spelen fascineert mij. De Spelen gaan niet alleen over sport, maar vooral ook over representatie. De honderd meter sprint is een mediageniek onderdeel waarmee je dat verhaal heel goed kunt illustreren. Het is ook heel compact: we kwamen uit op 47 olympische sprintfinales, en kozen vier paralympische sprints, in totaal negen à tien minuten sport.

Verder levert de honderd meter sprint heel letterlijk het beeld op van acht figuurtjes die over een staafdiagram lopen. Het beeld van de sprintfinale is in zichzelf een soort datavisualisatie.

Welke verhaal vertellen al die verschillende filmbeelden van de honderd meter sprint?

De Olympische Spelen waren oorspronkelijk ‘restricted for amateurs’, wat inhield dat alleen diegenen die financieel onafhankelijk waren mee konden doen. De Spelen begonnen als een onderonsje van blanke mannen uit een beperkt aantal industriële landen. Tegelijkertijd droegen de Olympische Spelen het idee van de universele mensheid uit. Dus de blan-

51 Sprints ke man stond voor de universele mens. 51 Sprints laat zien hoe andere, van die standaard afwijkende groepen (arbeider, vrouw, zwart, gehandicapt) op een gegeven moment in de representatie worden meegenomen. Allereerst speelt het recht om mee te doen en vervolgens gaat het over de verschillen die vroeger tot uitsluiting of insluiting leidden, en hoe die doorspelen in de kans om te winnen.

Hoe vertel je zo’n complex verhaal aan de hand van een eenvoudig gegeven als de honderd meter sprint?

Samen met kunstenaar/ontwerper Yuri Veerman ontwikkelden we een concept dat uit drie delen bestaat. Het verhaal begint met een introductie over de sprintfinale en de symboolwerking van de sprinter. Het tweede deel bestaat uit de vijf verhaallijnen: natie, klasse, ras, sekse en lichaam. Vijf manieren waarop de sprinter als symbool voor een bepaalde groep mensen betekenis krijgt of voor een bepaalde identiteit kan staan. Het lichaam is bijvoorbeeld een thema dat nu sterk speelt. Al sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn er sportwed­ strijden voor gehandicapten, toen met name voor oorlogsgewonden. Vanaf 1960 worden zij officieel door het Olympisch Comité erkend onder de naam ‘Paralympische Spelen’. Deze vinden na de Olympische Spelen plaats en de media lieten ze een beetje links liggen. Sinds 2008 is de media-aandacht echter flink toegenomen en in Londen werden de Paralympische Spelen bijna op hetzelfde podium gehesen. Volgens sommigen zal het niet lang meer duren voor paralympische nummers onderdeel zullen worden van de Olympische Spelen.

Voor de gehandicapte sporters zou dit de erkenning betekenen van het van de standaard afwijkende lichaam.

Het derde deel van de documentaire is interactief, waar bestaat die interactiviteit uit?

Van alle finalisten van alle sprints hebben we een enorme reeks gegevens verzameld zoals afkomst, lengte, gewicht,

opleiding en het bruto nationaal product van het land waar ze vandaan komen. Al die data maken het mogelijk om clusters te maken, waarbij je mensen die in een bepaalde categorie vallen kunt afzetten tegen die in een andere categorie. Zo weten we dat mannen gemiddeld sneller zijn dan vrouwen, maar er zijn nog veel meer gemiddelden uit de enorme hoeveelheid gegevens te halen. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld uitrekenen wat het gemiddelde verschil is tussen alle renners die wel en de renners die geen sportbeurs hebben gehad. Of je kunt alle renners die uit Amerika komen tegen die uit Europa afzetten.

Je kunt ook uitrekenen hoeveel sneller mensen uit de Afrikaanse diaspora, bijvoorbeeld Amerika en Jamaica, zijn dan die van Europese oorsprong. Vervolgens kan de kijker van de documentaire steeds een factor aan of uitzetten en zo fictieve races samenstellen.

Digitale cultuur is, samen met architectuur en design, een van de ‘disciplines’ binnen Het Nieuwe Instituut. Hoe wil het instituut zich tot het digitale domein verhouden? Kun je daar iets over zeggen in relatie tot deze interactieve documentaire?

Met deze documentaire heb ik een vorm willen kiezen die specifiek is voor de digitale cultuur. De interactieve documentaire is een format dat hoort bij het web. Voor mij is 51 Sprints een voorbeeld om een praktijk mee verder te ontwikkelen. We zijn inmiddels een beetje post-digitaal. Er is geen cultuur die niet meer op de een of andere manier door het digitale wordt beïnvloed. Dus wat is dan digitale cultuur? Toch zijn er met name interactieve vormen die specifiek in de digitale context tot bloei zijn gekomen. Interactiviteit maakt het mogelijk om je eigen subjectieve lezing in te brengen in wat getoond wordt. Natuurlijk is dat onderscheid een beetje vals, want ook in bijvoorbeeld een traditionele, meer statische tentoonstelling moet de toeschouwer werk verzetten. Maar met interactieve media ontstaan er meer mogelijkheden voor uitwisseling.’

Wat betekent het voor de digitale cultuur dat Het Nieuwe Instituut de verschillende disciplines in relatie tot elkaar wil benaderen en tonen?

Vanuit de digitale cultuur is het een enorme verrijking om verbonden te worden met een geschiedenis die verder teruggaat dan 1984, een van de mogelijke begindata van het internet. Er bestaat veel kritische nettheorie, maar ook veel toekomstgerichte speculatie waarin elk historisch perspectief ontbreekt. Vanuit de disciplines architectuur en design is het goed om te zien dat de nieuwe technologische middelen niet alleen een extensie zijn van het bestaande vocabulaire, maar ook tot radicaal nieuwe vragen leiden. Neem open source, dat is een fenomeen uit de digitale cultuur dat inspireert tot ­nieuwe ontwikkelingen in design en architectuur. Het idee dat je ontwerpen kunt delen om er vervolgens met gebruikers aan verder te sleutelen, komt voort uit de eigenschappen van digitale media. Door de samenkomst van de verschillende disciplines kan Het Nieuwe Instituut dergelijke ontwikkelingen kritisch volgen.
