Forgotten theater Beyond the fact that HBO’s ambitious new miniseries, “The Pacific,” is a superb, viscerally moving and harrowing depiction of World War II and a worthy complement to “Band of Brothers” (2001), it offers a resounding yes to a nagging question: Do we really need another movie about World War II? In recent years, the “Greatest Generation” canon has pervaded popular culture via books, movies and documentaries. When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks did “Saving Private Ryan” for the big screen in 1998 and followed it with “Band of Brothers” for HBO three years later, some saw these works as a kind of nostalgic look at a previous style

of warfare — less like the Persian Gulf War and the onrush of nationless terrorism. (“Band of Brothers” aired the first two hours — of 10 total — two days before the Sept. 11 attacks.) Tom Brokaw’s book “The Greatest Generation” also came out in 1998 (as did the movie “The Thin Red Line”). Add more books and media saturation, and you have the runaway veneration of a generation. It seemed that the entertainment industry had exhausted films about Vietnam and found the ongoing Iraq war too ever-present, a “living room war” that kept people Goodman continues on E2

Kentfield’s Avery Hale has collected and delivered 2,500 new and gently used pairs of shoes to people in developing countries, including Peru, South Africa and — last week — Haiti. Those statistics are even more impressive when you learn that Avery Hale is only 15. In 2006, Avery’s parents, Tom and Liz Hale, returned from a vacation in Peru. They showed their daughter — then 12 — photos of children they met in local villages. The first thing Avery noticed was that most of the kids weren’t wearing shoes. A few had sandals they’d made themselves from discarded tire treads. Their feet were bruised, cut and infected. “It was such a small thing they needed, just a pair of shoes,” Avery said in a recent interview. “I thought I could help if I just started small, right here in my community.” Avery began by asking friends and family to donate used but still wearable shoes. She collected a dozen pairs. “I thought, ‘If I can get 12 pairs, I can probably get Step continues on E4

Modern meets vintage when boutique owner falls for Eichler By Chantal Lamers S P ECI AL TO THE CHRONICLE

You never know what you’ll come across on Craigslist. Jennifer Jones can vouch for that. While searching for a midcentury dresser last fall, she happened upon a rental listing for a fourbedroom Eichler in the Oakland hills with a bay view. Smitten, she surrendered her quintessential San Francisco apartment and moved into a

those who can identify with Jones’ craving for vintage, such a move is entirely rational. Enviable, even. shows. The texture-rich, scrappy space with bare walls is balanced by rows of jars brimming with nostalgic sweets, sets of salvaged doors transformed into card displays, and cases and shelves with graphic silk scarves, gleaming jewelry and cheeky pottery. As she does at her collective, Jones puts to good use the nooks and crannies so liberally provided in the variety of residential architecture she’s occupied throughout Northern California. “The focus of my dwellings over the years has always been on the little treasures I’ve found while thrifting and traveling, or gifts from friends, family keepsakes and artwork,” says Jones. So the Eichler’s modern muscle and clean lines admittedly presented a challenge. Without compromising the integrity of the space or her curatorial talents, she settled into the task of making the space her own. A California native (she keeps her longboard propped up in the courtyard for a fast getaway to the coast), Jones has tastes that, though rooted in mementos, aren’t the polar opposite of midcentury design principles. Her restrained palette is delicate white with earthy, natural hues, and the occasional hint of something brilliant. It’s playful and laid-back. ‘California vibe’ “It has a very vintage California vibe, I suppose, but it’s also quirky and has a sense of humor,” says Jones. “I love coastal Northern Californian architecture and interiors from the late ’60s through the late ’70s, and there is definitely a bit of that vibe, but it’s not overwhelming. I hate the idea of a theme house, so I’ve tried to keep it eclectic.” To compensate for the lack of alcoves, Jones called upon David Pierce of Ohio Design in San Francisco to fabricate custom pieces throughout the house (Pierce designed ecofurnishings for Good Hotel in SoMa). Interior designer Nicole Socia’s gift for editing and flow was key in pulling off the casual cohesion. “She was essential in helping me pare down, fine-tune and really hone the aesthetic of the house. plementary eye, which is great when working on a quirky project like this,” said Jones. Jones and company managed the marriage of modern with mementos by letting the objects provide the color and texture. “To balance out all the little things, I tend to stick to a minimal amount of furniture but really strive to find just the right pieces.” (At the moment, she’s searching for a tulipshaped table to pair with a foursome of translucent, ambertoned knockoff Saarinen tulip chairs.) Serene lounge The living room feels like a serene lounge, with a pair of low white leather and chrome ’70s chairs plucked from Craigslist and a lived-in pale yellow sofa all arranged to encourage conversation. Over the fireplace, a striking Curtis Jere brass and copper swan sculpture is a nod to a jeweled peacock sculpture her grandmother owned. And a Canadian Electrohome dome turntable qualifies as a serious piece of vintage eye candy. Nearby, sweeping shelves designed from scraps by Pierce showcase some of the finishing touches, from a collection of worn Nancy Drew novels to figurines and family photographs. To complement the soaring windows that bring the outdoors inside, Jones planted ferns inside Woolly Pockets containers and hung them on the wall. Jones’ devotion to amalgamating time periods in polished fashion is well illustrated in the dining room, where an unexpected puka-shell chandelier dangles over the table. An acrylic bar cart holds bottles, funky glasses and decanters, while long shelves on the opposite side of the table flaunt a charismatic mishmash of throwback pottery. Favorite spot Off the kitchen, an open recess occupied by a white sofa with matching rug and macrame ornament derives its color mainly from a creative book display. Beneath a pair of consoles designed to hold the television and sound system, a selection ranging from gardening guides to novels is organized by color. But the spot that beckons Jones the most overlooks the small,
