PRESIDENT’S FOREWARD*

-------------------------------

Two years have passed since I first stepped into NTU. Up till now, majority of my co-curriculum time has been devoted to NTU Cultural Activities Club (CAC), a place that I would like to call ‘my second home’. Many people ask me if I have given up a lot to be part of CAC. Yes, I did. I gave up a lot of my old self in trade for a new one. One that is more mature & experienced in managing people and work. Beginning as a Project Director, & subsequently the President, gave me many opportunities to develop my leadership potential & make new friends. Ok, enough about me. Let me tell you what CAC is in simply four words: Youth - People of CAC. Student leaders of today, corporate leaders of the future. Entertainment - Scope of CAC. Learning through performing & organizing events. Arts - Genre of CAC. Enhancing our way of life through appreciation of the performing arts. Hearts - Value of CAC. Developing passion for performing arts & event organizing. Notice that the first letter of each word combines to form the word ‘YEAH!’. In my opinion, saying ‘YEAH’ sounds more enthusiastic & approachable than saying ‘YES’. Hence, I envisage not just for CAC but also its members to be as forthcoming as saying the word ‘YEAH!’. Every CAC member begins & ends with an Essentia in hand. Freshmen browse through it in search of a CAC identity that they can begin with. Seniors browse through it to find a new identity that they can associate with. Essentia will provide you with all the information you need to know about what CAC is in detail. However, do note that Essentia is not 100% comprehensive. It only provides you with the book value of what CAC is. To know more about the market value, kindly speak to any of the CAC Seniors & we will be most willing to tell you more about our fruitful experiences. Enjoy~! Cheers, LIM YONG XI President 18th Executive Committee NTU Cultural Activities Club

CHINESE DANCE

Celebrating its 15th birthday this year, the CAC Chinese Dance Club matures & gains wisdom with each day under the tutelage of Mdm. Chen Lili, an established Chinese dance instructor cum choreographer whose items secured 2 Gold with Honors awards in the recent SYF. We grow to outperform ourselves at every opportunity available. We are invited to perform in many events such as NTU Alumni Day & NTU Open House & each time is a growing and learning process for us all. We strive to grow together as a group, regardless of the background of dancers. Our club has held 2 bi-annual concerts and our next one will be in August 2010. We believe that all dancers will experience spur in growth on stage, which is why we insist on holding a concert every 2 years. Like a report card, we see the concert as the best platform for us to showcase our growth over the years. & we need you in order to pass with flying colours.

SALSA EN SYNC

Salsa is a hot and spicy sauce, and Salsa dancing was given itsname because the dance is hot and spicy! CAC Salsa En Sync came into existence in year 2006 with the intention to make Salsa dancing known to the student body of NTU. After organizing numerous dance classes, workshops and Salsa camps, many have come to learn about Salsa dancing as sexy, sensual and fun. Within this few years, the club has grown rapidly and we are very proud to have developed many into passionate dancers who are confident both on and off the stage. We aim to bring Salsa dancing to more people so that everyone will learn to enjoy Salsa dancing as a social dance as w

CONTEMPORARY

DANCE

"To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful." -Agnes De Mille Many question what exactly the ‘contemporary’ dance style is. ‘Contemporary’ means modern, unrestricted and creative. Contrary to the structured steps of ballet, this style is a more relaxed style of dance focusing on emotions & moods. NTU CAC Contemporary Dance started off in 2001 with a modern ballet genre. It now focuses on the lyrical jazz style. Under the guidance of our instructor, Ryan Tan, Contemporary Dance actively seeks to spread the passion for dance though imaginative & emotive dance forms. If you, like us, possess a deep-seated love for dance, come join us.

DANCE

--------------------------

KINETICS Founded in 1999, CAC Kinetics has links with renowned local dance company, Jitterbugs Singapore. The club aspires to help its members cultivate confidence on the social dance floor. Lindy Hop is a healthy social dance that names energy, speed & dynamism as its hallmarks. Last year, Kinetics brought in a new section: Tap dance. Offering these two forms of swing dancing, the club aims to lead its members into a world of swing & lots of fun!

BREAKDANCE

MJ, our more affectionate name for NTU CAC Modern Jazz, is NTU's premier hip hop dance club. The club leans more towards hip hop under the guidance of Mr Patrick Loo, a legendary name in local dance circles. MJ is one big family that continually encourages each other. Together, we have conquered competitions such as Impresario, Danzwar & Danceworks, held our biennial dance production, Dancetitude, & performed at numerous concerts & shows. We strive to bringtogether people who are passionate about dancing while providing every member avenues & platforms to grow and showcase their talent and creativity. We always look forward to having new members join us - it doesn't matter if you're a novice, as long as you love dance, you're right for MJ!

MODERN JAZZ

Breakdance is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement. NTU CAC Popping & Locking, under CAC breakdancing, is a fresh club established only in 2008. Though young, the club has undertaken performances for various events such as Nanyang Arts Festival 2009 and Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Week. Locking encompasses fast & distinct arm and hand movements with relaxed hips & legs. Movements are usually large, exaggerated, rhythmic & tightly synched with the music. Popping, on the other hand, is distinct by a ëpopí, done by tensing & relaxing muscles. The renowned Moonwalk & Robot dance are 2 such examples. Funk is the language of expression for you!

Dancesport encompasses competitive ballroom dancing regulated by international dancesport organizations. There are 10 dances in Dancesport consisting of 5 Latin dances (Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Jive, Samba & Paso Doble) & 5 standard dances (Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep & Foxtrot). NTU’s very own CAC DanceSport Academy, with a solid track record of transforming beginners into ballroom dancers who perform at international & local competitions, would like to make this experience more accessible to the wider community, with an excellent venue at Nanyang House Dance Studio & top-notch mentoring from international coaches provided by Shawn & Gladys DanceWorld, Singapore. We believe the sole ingredients that make a good dancer are commitment & eagerness in learning, almost all of our competing couples began with no dance background. No experience required. What are you waiting for?

------------------------------LIVE MUSIC SOCIETY The CAC Live Music Society comprises of musicians who are talented in various styles of music, such as rock, pop & funk. Currently, there are a few bands in the club, namely the Naked Essentials, Stentorian. They have been invited to perform at several events such as EEE week, MPE week & Hall events.

In 2003, the choir participated in the first International Choral Festival in Genting, Malaysia, receiving two Silver Awards. 2006 saw the choir achieve two gold diplomas and two silver medals in the 4th World Choir Games held in Xiamen, China. Most recently, in June 2008, the choir took part in the Festival of Songs competition held in Olomouc, Czech Republic. The choir returned with not just a Gold medal, but also as overall category champions with a score of 95%. Back home, the choir has performed for President S. R. Nathan, Dr. Cham Tao Soon & various local & international ministers at the International Academic Advisory Panel, held at the Istana in January 2002 & 2003. The choir has also been invited to perform in the event ‘Arts from the Heart’, to raise funds for the Chen Su Lan Methodist Home for Children, as well as for the Ministry of Information, Communication & the Arts Annual Staff Conference at the Singapore Management University in Feb 2008. The NTU CAC Choir hopes to share our music through our annual concert, Cantemus, which means ‘to sing’. However, there is really more to choir than just singing. It is all about building bonds beyond the blending of harmony and voices, or as choristers would call it, creating ‘Chords That Bind’. The delight & sense of belonging we feel is the difference that we bring in each others' lives. So, do come join our family, we promise that you will have a memorable & enjoyable year ahead!

MUSIC

-------------------------The idea of CAC’s first Jazz & Blues Band was first conceived in the holidays of December 2003, where a few like-minded students with a passion in jazz music wanted to do something together. Thus, the Jazz & Blues Band was officially set up with the aim of promoting this genre of music to students, both musicians & non-musicians alike. The band has since performed at the World Debate conference & also at the CAC Arts from the Heart outdoor & indoor events. This year, it also staged a successful lunchtime concert called ‘Jazz in a Can’ at Canteen A. The Jazz & Blues band intends to introduce Jazz to the NTU population by inviting renowned Jazz musicians to its performances & concerts.

JAZZ&BLUES

Formed in 2001, the CAC Chinese Drums Club’s primary objective is to increase public awareness & interest in this ancient form of Chinese culture. Since then, the club has been steadily increasing its membership & improving its craft. They play self-composed rhythms as well as classical works.

CHINESE ORCHESTRA The CAC Chinese Orchestra (NTUCO) was founded in 1983. Its priorities include providing Chinese music lovers an environment to pursue their interest and propagating this interest among the NTU population. Since its formation, the Orchestra has been playing a part in enriching campus life by performing at various on-campus events like convocation ceremonies, Chinese New Year celebrations & Heritage Week. Its annual public concert, Transient Reminiscences, serves as a platform for the orchestra to showcase the talent of its members. Besides performing for events, the Orchestra also conducts introductory lessons for anyone who is interested in learning a Chinese musical instrument. In December 2008, NTUCO flew to Hong Kong for a Cultural Exchange Trip with three local universities there. The two joint concerts of these four orchestras received positive feedback from the audience. In the coming year, the Orchestra looks forward to achieving greater heights in its musical pursuits.

NTU CAC Guitar Ensemble (NTUGE) was first established 24 years ago in 1985. Playing in a style of an orchestra, our Ensemble consists of different guitar of varying size & pitch. Ranging from the high-pitched Soprano guitar to the deep, resonant Guitarron, these unique guitars come from a special range of guitar created specially for orchestra-styled playing by Hiroki Niibori. Small groups are formed to enable our members to explore a wider variety of music, as well as share their own song arrangements. Our ensemble plays a wide array of musical styles, including those of Classical, Contemporary, Latin, Jazz, & many international pop music. Brought together as an Ensemble, we will learn guitar together; we will play & practice together; we will perform together.

GUITAR ENSEMBLE

-------------------------The CAC Symphonic Band has been around since 1985. Through sheer hard work & a love for music, the band has built itself a reputation for being one of the finest in Singapore. Besides having performed at school events such as Union Day & Nanyang Arts Festival, the band has also been invited to perform at places such as the World Trade Centre Amphitheatre & the Istana. The band had put up several successful public concerts, including the popular ‘Sojourn’ Series concerts. In 2005, the band brought honour to CAC, NTU & Singapore by clinching the silver medal in the World Music Contest, held at the Netherlands.

SYMPHONIC BAND

STRING ORCHESTRA The CAC String Orchestra was set up in 1994 to provide a platform for string players to perform together Our members range from those with more than 10 years of experience to others who have always enjoyed the music from afar, but never had the opportunity to actually pick up a string instrument. We are comprised of 3 groups: the Main Orchestra, the Training Orchestra, as well as a group of Beginner/Intermediate students. The Main Orchestra plays a broad spectrum of music, ranging from classical to contemporary works to excerpts from musicals. Our first public concert, Journey ‘05, marked the 10-year journey of the club from a String Ensemble to a String Orchestra. This was followed by four other concerts Journey ‘06, a celebration of Mozart’s legacy, Adventures on Earth, an ambitious collaboration with the New Festival Orchestra featuring the movie music of John Williams, Journey ‘07, showcasing works from the Romantic Period, & more recently, Journey ’08, presenting repertoire from the Baroque & early Classical periods. We hope that many more string players will join us to make great music together in the years (& concerts) to come!

Members may get to take up responsibility & liaise with the schoolbody & external music companies. In the year 2009, we organized ARTSpeaks workshop such as the enriching talk by Power98 DJs. We have also organized campus concerts for both local & Taiwanese singers, namely Genie Zhuo Wen Xuan, Da Mouth, Huang Jing Lun & Shi Xin Hui. Besides that, we have also collaborated with rocks records for the redemption of MayDay’s Stadium Green Concert. These serve to bring enrichment & entertainment to fellow students amidst the regular university life. This is also one committee that actively participates in CAC events. Addtionally, members also initiate informal regular outings. The friendship & bonds formed within members from different levels & schools are things you wouldn’t want to miss in NTU.

The Media & IT Committee in CAC has 2 specific areas of interest. They are the maintaining of the webpage & videography. Basic things like updating of the website & posting of events in school portal such as Campus Buzz. A new inclusion will be the CAC Monthly e-Newsletter which is sent to our members to notify them of upcoming CAC events. We also provide video support for our events, recording the performance & providing a video archive at the end of it. -------------------------SOCIAL&WELFARE

Social & Welfare Committee as its name spells, takes care of the social & welfare aspects of the Cultural Activities Club! More specifically, our committee organizes major social events throughout the academic year -- CAC Members' Night, CAC Alumni Night & CAC Cynosure Ball. We have so far organized our 2 major events, CAC Members' Night & CAC Alumni Night which garnered great response from both our current members and CAC alumni. Next up is our finale, CAC Cynosure Ball in search for our CAC Face Ambassadors to represent our club for the next academic year! We are in the midst of preparing for the event which is happening in August, & we can't wait to deliver our ideas on our event day! This year, we held our CAC Alumni Night at Velvet Underground, Zouk where it allowed CAC members, both current & alumni to party all night long under great music. It was thoroughly fun & we hope to have another smashing event next year! If you love to organize events, here is the place to do so! If you want to know how to organize events, here is also the place to learn from. With spontaneous people working with you, be rest assured that your days in CAC will never go to waste!
