Have you heard of Jujube?
Jujube is a red Chinese date that has been used throughout history as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Jujube is a rich source of vitamin C, minerals and fiber. Historically, Jujube is used in TCM for insomnia, restlessness and fatigue. It is used to strengthen Qi, or your natural life force, and to quiet a racing mind. It is this last use that has many people today taking note of Jujube and the potential it has for alleviating stress. Ancient healers believed that the saponins and flavonoids naturally present in Jujube dates have sedative effects. They have been used throughout history in China to reduce stress and anxiety, allowing a person to have more rest and relaxation. Other uses of Jujube include inflammation, ulcers, loss of appetite and for certain skin conditions, all things that can be made worse by stress. If stress is something you experience a lot, Jujube would be a good natural option to try.

letter from the editor
Full Spring It’s easy to tell when spring is in full swing at my house. My dog prowls the back yard on continuous lookout for birds that might dare land on his fence. My television rarely strays from the baseball channels. And my wife punctuates every other sentence with a sneeze. Chances are, you know someone in the same boat. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, some 40 million of us suffer from some type of sinus-related allergy. The problem is that the “cure”—antihistamines—does little more than mask the symptoms and leave us feeling dried out and sluggish. If you’re looking for something more— a product that can help address the underlying causes of your sniffles without the side effects—check out “Allergy Sinus” (p. 24). This complete guide to natural allergy remedies features everything you need to know to find lasting relief, from herbs to supplements to homeopathic formulas. Of course, allergies are just one of the conditions that can be addressed with natural products. The shelves of your favorite health food store are packed with nutrients that can support everything from better memory to weight loss to heart health. With that in mind, we put together a comprehensive list of our 75 favorite supplements (p. 18). No matter your specific health concerns, there’s bound to be something here that can help. newsflash BLOOD PRESSURE DRUGS ...or Fish Oil? Taking enough fish oil daily may be a viable alternative to blood pressure medication for some, according to a review of 70 trials in the American Journal of Hypertension. Researchers found that the blood-pressure-lowering effects of fish oil “could prevent an individual from requiring medication to control their hypertension or could help maintain an individual in a lower stage of progressive hypertension.” Effective daily doses were between 2 and 3.8 grams combined of EPA and DHA, the key fats found in fish oil. Sources of EPA and DHA include different types of seafood, EPAand DHA-fortified foods, fish oil, algae oil, and fish oil supplements.
the very best bone builders Osteoporotic bones are like the twig that snaps with only the slightest breeze. In advanced cases of osteoporosis, the bones actually become too weak to support the body. Signs that indicate your bones may be getting weaker include back pain; loss of height over time with a stooped posture; and fractures of the vertebrae, hip, or wrists. In recognition of National Osteoporosis and Awareness Month (May), we put together the following list of nutrients for strong, healthy bones.
Essential: k Calcium: “More doesn’t equal better,”
VITAMIN D— Crucial for Women with Breast Cancer Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are twice as likely to survive if they have higher levels of vitamin D, according to a review of studies involving 4,443 breast cancer patients. The authors of the study, published in Anticancer Research, recommend that women with breast cancer maintain blood levels of vitamin D between 30 and 80 ng/ml.
GREEN COFFEE’S weight-loss boost An analysis of six studies involving 303 people confirms that green coffee extract is effective in helping overweight people shed pounds. According to the review, which was published in Natural Medicine Journal, the supplement did not help people of normal weight lower the number on the scale.
6
explains Carolyn DeMarco, MD, author of The Bone-Building Solution. “The body cannot absorb more than 600 mg of calcium at one time.” k Magnesium: Several animal studies and a few human studies have shown that low magnesium levels in bones are linked to the development of osteoporosis. Also, magnesium is essential for the absorption and metabolism of calcium. k Vitamin D3: There are numerous studies involving vitamin D for osteoporosis prevention and treatment; nearly all of the literature combines vitamin D3 with calcium. k Vitamin K2: This lesser-known vitamin is required to make the active form of osteocalcin, an important bonebuilding protein molecule. According to DeMarco, vitamin K2 also helps keep calcium from calcifying in tissues such as the heart and arteries throughout the body. Look for products with MenaQ7, a proprietary and well-studied form of vitamin K2.

Healthy Joint Duo In osteoarthritis, the space between joint parts, or “joint space,” narrows as the disease progresses. But a combination of glucosamine (1,500 mg) and chondroitin (800 mg) can help slow down this process, according to a study published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. Among 605 people between the ages of 45 and 75 with osteoarthritis, taking both supplements daily (but not either one alone) significantly reduced joint space narrowing during a two-year period.

protein plus From non-GMO to vegan, today’s protein powders offer something a little different
Y
ou’ll find a vast number of protein powders on your natural grocers’ shelves, including raw, vegan, gluten-free, and organic varieties. With so many to choose from, how can you be certain that you’re getting the right one for you? The first consideration is protein quality, traditionally rated by biological value (BV), the proportion of a protein that can be synthesized and used by the body’s cells. The newest measure is the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which measures both amino acid profile and digestibility, with the highest number being 1. Also keep an eye on sugar content and added flavorings, and check the label for other ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber—which you may or may not want depending upon your individual needs.
5 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT PEA PROTEIN This easily absorbed protein is ideal for anyone with food sensitivities or allergies. Some fast facts: Extracted and concentrated protein from split yellow peas.

Introducing moringa: the latest energy-boosting green superfood
V
iewed as an “energy blaster” by Dr. Oz, moringa is rapidly becoming a popular green-food supplement. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this versatile plant. A Canadian scientist who studies water purification methods calls moringa “one of the world’s most useful trees,” because it grows in inhospitably dry tropical soils and its seeds can be used to purify water, thereby reducing the spread of disease. In regions where food is scarce, moringa leaves provide lifesaving nutrition, and other parts of the tree are used as medicine. At Johns Hopkins University, researchers are examining moringa’s potential cancer-fighting properties.
Moringa: Good for Whatever Ails You? In India, the roots, bark, seeds, and leaves of the Moringa oleifera tree have been used medicinally for about 5,000 years. And it has a similar history of use in Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and Australia. According to Trees for Life International, a non-profit organization that helps developing areas of the world, moringa has been used in traditional medicine to treat a wide range of ailments, including: Anemia Anxiety Asthma Bronchitis Chest congestion Colitis Conjunctivitis Cough Diabetes (type 2) Diarrhea Edema Ear infections Fever Glandular swelling
Headaches Intestinal worms Jaundice Joint pain Lactation difficulties Malaria Pimples and blackheads Psoriasis Semen deficiency Skin infections Sore throat Sprains Stomach ulcers
When sprayed on other plants, a solution of moringa juice, used by farmers in some of moringa’s native habitats, makes trees more resistant to pests and disease, and helps to increase yield.
without depleting beneficial HDL cholesterol. Moringa contains plenty of antioxidants and is reported to help reduce inflammation, ward off cancer, and promote heart and liver health. Plus, it’s also thought to help fight H. pylori infection, the bacterium that is responsible for many stomach ulcers. To date, human studies on moringa haven’t been conducted in the US or other Western countries, but Jed Fahey, PhD, a nutritional biochemist and researcher at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, has studied it extensively and is the author of several articles about the plant. Fahey, who drinks a tea made with moringa powder, sees the plant as an important part of the solution to world hunger. In the United States, he says, “Moringa is a nutrient-dense, protein-rich leafy green that can be used to add variety to your diet.”
Nutrients Galore Moringa leaves are rich in easily digestible protein, with the essential amino acids. They’re also packed with vitamins and minerals, including calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and C. In undernourished developing countries, moringa can rescue people from starvation. In a culture such as ours, where food is plentiful but often full of empty calories, it’s a healthy source of concentrated nutrients. Small human studies in India show that supplements made from dried moringa leaves can help reduce elevated blood sugar levels in diabetics and lower unhealthy forms of cholesterol 10
Fruitrients Moringa provides plant-based calcium, and is rich in beneficial vitamins and nutrients. This gluten-free and vegan formula is free of additives and fillers.
Only Natural Moringa Pure supplies vitamins, minerals, amino acids, coenzymes, and antioxidants in convenient vegetarian capsules.
Bio Nutrition Moringa Tea is made from pure moringa leaves. The tea is a healthy addition to anyone’s diet and may contribute to overall health.

the enzyme factor Digestive problems got you down? An enzyme boost may be just what you need all 100 trillion cells in our body depend upon the reaction of metabolic enzymes and their energy factor.” But, as important as they are, metabolic enzymes can’t be obtained through supplementation. They are only produced by the body’s own cells. Digestive enzymes, on the other hand, are produced throughout the digestive tract to help break down the foods we eat into the nutrients our body needs. If food isn’t properly processed in the digestive tract, we can experience gas, bloating, and stomach upset.
E
nzymes are biologically active proteins that play a key role in every function in the human body. They’re essential for the breakdown of food and the absorption of nutrients. They help maintain heartbeat, muscle function, and hormone balance. In fact, enzymes are involved in at least 4,000 different biochemical reactions essential to life— about half of which involve digestion.
Form and Function Enzymes are the match that sparks countless reactions, but each works in its own specific way. “Think of enzymes as tools, with each having a slightly different function,” says Tom Bohager, author of Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes. For instance, the fat-digesting enzyme lipase can’t break down protein. It can only impact dietary fat. While there are an estimated 5,000 enzymes hard at work in the human body, they typically fall into two categories: metabolic and digestive. “Metabolic enzymes enable us to see, hear, feel, move, and think,” says Professor Walter J. Crinnion, ND, Chair of the Department of Environmental Medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona. “Every organ, every tissue, and 12
Disappearing Act When we’re young, our bodies can create all of the enzymes we need. As we age, however, this production begins to slow down. Over time, we can find ourselves deficient in the enzymes we need for proper digestion or organ function. Ideally, we could easily replenish the enzymes we need through our diets. Yet, while raw foods—especially fresh fruits and vegetables—are literally bursting with enzymes, cooking and processing destroys them. “Since most of the foods we eat are cooked or processed in some way, and since the raw foods we do eat contain only enough enzymes to process that particular food, our bodies must produce the majority of the digestive enzymes we require—unless we use supplemental enzymes,” says Crinnion. Among the most important enzymes are protease, lipase, and amylase. Protease breaks apart protein. Lipase processes fat. And amylase digests carbohydrates. Without these enzymes, your body couldn’t process that cheeseburger you had for lunch. A broad spectrum of supplemental digestive enzymes taken with each meal can help ensure that our bodies efficiently
process the nutrients that we eat. Since we rarely eat foods that contain only protein, fat, or carbohydrates, it’s best to choose a supplement that contains a blend of all three.
Bonus Benefits Research from around the world suggests that enzymes can boost immunity, ease inflammation, relieve sinus problems, enhance heart health, and help you recover from an intense workout. Topically, enzymes are used in beauty products to brighten and give skin a more youthful appearance. If you’re taking enzymes for digestion, it’s best to take them either with meals or immediately after eating.
Paragon Plus Super-Zyme Complex is a high-potency, broad-spectrum enzyme complex that supports digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Akin’s and Chamberlin’s Phyto Design Enzyme Complex combines plant-based enzymes with soothing herbs for optimal digestive health. Great for occasional indigestion, bloating, and gas.
Mychelle Fruit Enzyme Scrub uses the power of fruit enzymes combined with jojoba beads and bamboo stem powder to brighten and exfoliate the skin.

When stress, travel, icky weather and antibiotics bring on the sniffles and intestinal yuckiness, our balance of good and bad bacteria is thrown off.* When I think that 70 percent of the immune system is in our digestive tract, that means keeping our immune system strong partly comes down to making sure we’re supporting our intestinal health as well. detox for kids
Q:
Are detox regimens safe—or even necessary— for children? —Sharon G., Chicago
A:
If I had been asked this question 20 years ago, I would have gently explained that kids are clean—they haven’t had time to accumulate toxins or sully their health with smoking, drinking too much alcohol, eating junk food, or other bad habits. Recently, however, we’ve seen reports about noxious chemicals—many never properly tested by the FDA—detected in breast milk. States all over the country are mounting legislative actions to ban BPA, phthalates, and flame retardant chemicals in products targeted to people younger than age 7. To put it plainly, today’s kids are bombarded with so many chemicals, it boggles the imagination. One of the worst offenders is fabric softener. If you
By Emily A. Kane, ND, LAc
What you can do naturally to cleanse young bodies
have young children, please try to “green” your cleaning and laundry supplies as much as possible. Unfortunately, today’s children bear a higher chemical burden than they would have 100 years ago. The list of “toxicity” symptoms is varied, but may include: difficulty with elimination (constipation, profuse sweating), headaches, rashes, bleeding gums, muscle and joint aches, difficulty breathing or concentrating, memory problems, heart palpitations, and sensitivity to sugar, MSG, or grains. Chubby kids, in particular, are more likely to be “toxic” because the body uses fatty tissues to wall off chemicals that can’t be broken down. A basic approach to detox, which works great for kids as well as adults, is to combine a mild laxative (such as aloe, prune juice, or fennel seeds) with a bulking agent (such as psyllium fiber for short-term use or ground flax seeds for a long-term solution). It’s also important to use a safe liver support agent. I usually suggest milk thistle, an amazing liver-healing herb. Use a high-quality product and give your child the recommended dose for one to three months, once per year.
CREATE A COLORFUL DIET Make food visually appealing to children by incorporating a rainbow of colors in meals. Here are some examples:
RED: Tomatoes, red pepper, raspberries, radishes, and apples.
14
ORANGE: Carrots, pumpkin, yam, squash, rutabaga, and salmon.
YELLOW: Yellow pepper, lemon, summer squash, sweet potato, and pineapple.
GREEN: Avocado, limes, spinach, kale, chard, collard greens, broccoli, and sprouts.
BLUE/VIOLET: Grapes, blueberries, eggplant, black beans, and red cabbage.
Ideally, water should be your child’s only beverage. Of course, this can be challenging with all of the tempting juices, sodas, and other drinks available on the market. But try to make all other beverages “treats” (with the exception of non-caffeinated herbal teas), and never give your kids conventional soda. Diet sodas are the worst—nothing but a brew of liquid chemicals. Movement is also critical for stimulating lymphatic circulation and drainage. Try to take a 20-minute walk every day. And ideally, you and your children want to break a light sweat for about 40 minutes, 3–4 times per week. Another problem that we all face is that the quality of our food isn’t as high as it was 100 years ago. Conventional agriculture, which relies on fertilizers and pesticides, has depleted the soil. So it’s important that your child take a high-quality multivitamin. I also suggest (and use myself) a green foods powder. Incorporating a rainbow of colorful, natural foods—ideally organic—into your child’s diet goes a long way toward providing the building blocks a body needs to promote tissue healing and the innate detoxification process. Avoid the three big “bad” foods—refined flours, corn syrup in all its permutations, and hydrogenated oils. Steam, broil, or bake your foods. Eat fresh greens daily. And try to eat some raw food every day.

Keys to Healthy, Shiny Hair BY SALLY KARLOVITZ, CN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS, illness, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and stress can all cause dull, limp, brittle hair. To prevent these negative results, take the two-step approach to beautiful shiny hair.
1. NOURISH FROM THE INSIDE Just like your body, your hair needs a balanced, nutritious diet to stay healthy. Remember that your hair is a reflection of what is going on inside your body. Hair draws its nutrition from the blood through the roots (follicles), so internal care is just as important as external. L-cysteine, an amino acid found in hair, and the B vitamin, biotin, are both nutrients that help with normal hair growth. Essential fatty acids, such as those found in flaxseeds, chia seeds, evening primrose oil, and avocado, help prevent dry, brittle hair and dry scalp. Antioxidants, such as vitamins E and C, help protect the hair and scalp from damage due to sun exposure and pollutants. And don’t forget the water! Water is an essential nutrient that helps keep your body hydrated, which in turn helps keep your hair silky and shiny.
2. NOURISH ON THE OUTSIDE Regular cleansing unclogs follicles so that your natural protective oils can create a healthy shine. Use natural shampoos and conditioners that contain botanical, protein, and vitamin ingredients to add body and support healthy, shiny hair. Formulas are available for a variety of hair types, from dry to oily. Once the hair is cleansed of unwanted dirt and oil, a natural conditioner is helpful. A conditioner helps replace protective oils and/or repair damage to the hair caused by sun, wind, chlorinated water, blow-drying, hair dyes, or permanents. Using this two-step approach, and focusing on natural ingredients, you will get the healthy, shiny hair you’ve always wanted.

Are You Missing Magnesium?
BY MARY ANN O’DELL, MS, RD
MAGNESIUM IS A MINERAL that has truly been understated, although it’s critical to optimum health. This mineral is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, so its role is nothing less than essential. What can magnesium do for you? BONE HEALTH. Magnesium is most commonly associated with calcium. Magnesium is essential for proper calcium absorption by bones, and 40% of the body’s magnesium content is in bones. BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL. Magnesium is involved in blood glucose control in the body. A recent study found that magnesium intake was low in non-diabetics with metabolic syndrome, and researchers suggested that increasing magnesium intake may protect against insulin resistance. A separate study found that people with the highest intake of magnesium were half as likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared with those who had the lowest intake HEART HEALTH. Magnesium plays an important role in regulating blood pressure and preventing blood clots and stroke. A recent review of research showed that higher intakes of magnesium may cut heart disease risk. MUSCLE RELAXATION. A deficiency of magnesium is associated with insomnia and anxiety, so maintaining magnesium status can help improve relaxation and rest. Taking extra magnesium in the evening can help relax you and improve sleep. ENERGY. Although magnesium helps with relaxation, it can also help with energy. One of the primary roles of magnesium is to stabilize ATP, the body’s energy molecule. Magnesium may help optimize oxygen use so you feel more energized. This may explain why chronic deficiency of magnesium can result in low energy, irritability, and weakness. Food sources of magnesium include green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. While readily available, studies show that many Americans are consistently not getting enough magnesium in their diets. In addition, numerous medications deplete magnesium in the body, including blood pressure medicines, antacids, heartburn medications, and antibiotics. Supplementing magnesium offers a good way to fill in the gap of missing magnesium. Magnesium is often found with calcium in tablet or liquid form, or alone in tablet, capsule, or highly absorbable powder form.
Magnesium Powder Promotes nerve, bone, and cardiovascular health.* Helps control important muscle and brain activity.* Used for its calming abilities.*
Calcium Magnesium Softgels Supports healthy bones and teeth.* Supplies calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D. In easy-toswallow softgels.
Q&A Q:
I am trying to avoid getting spider veins and varicose veins in my legs. Is there anything natural that can help? The natural approach to vein health includes consistent exercise and consuming a diet rich in vitamin C and flavonoids. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries, and peppers, supports connective tissues of the body, such as veins and capillaries. Studies show that flavonoids, such as those found in citrus fruits and grape seed extract, improve the strength of blood vessels.
A:
Herbs that support veins include horse chestnut, cayenne, and butcher’s broom. Horse chestnut has a long history of use in Europe, and scientific studies have verified its use for improving circulation and reducing swelling in the legs. Cayenne is known as a circulatory tonic. It supports circulation throughout blood vessels. Butcher’s broom is widely used for improving circulation in the lower extremities and for its anti-inflammatory effect.

This superfruit reduces inflammation, relieves joint pain in fibromyalgia patients, protects against neurological diseases, and helps strengthen immunity.
Aloe juice has a healing effect on the gastrointestinal tract and can ease heartburn and acid reflux.
Amino acids Amino acids, the building blocks of protein, serve as key constituents of neurotransmitters in
the brain. They also help regulate blood sugar, boost immunity, build muscle, relieve pain, ease depression, and enhance sexual function. Some top amino acids include L-lysine, L-glutamine, taurine, L-arginine, L-theanine, L-tyrosine, L-phenylalanine, and L-tryptophan.
Andrographis This herb has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat respiratory infections, flu, bronchitis, fever, and sore throat.
Arnica
Bacopa
Black cohosh
For bruising, soreness, or swelling, arnica gel can help to speed healing and relieve pain.
Studies show that bacopa reduces anxiety while helping the mind learn quickly and retain information. Some researchers believe it may also help prevent and treat dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s rich in phytoestrogens that may ease both immediate and long-term effects of menopause. In one study, black cohosh was as effective as estrogen in decreasing hot flash symptoms.
Ashwagandha Ashwagandha has been referred to as “an antidote for stressful living” for its effectiveness at helping the body handle stress and increase energy.
Astragalus Traditionally used to treat diabetes, this herb also has powerful immunesupportive effects.
SUPER
Boswellia Bee propolis Propolis—a substance bees use to protect their hives—possesses antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

B vitamins
Cocoa
CoQ10
DIM
Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are needed to make neurotransmitters; niacin helps lower cholesterol; and vitamins B1, B2, and B3 help energize cells. A B-complex formula can take the edge off anxiety and stress, and lift low moods.
Cocoa is a concentrated source of antioxidants that lower blood pressure; improve cholesterol levels; enhance heart and artery health; regulate blood-sugar and mood; and lower levels of stress hormones.
Found in cruciferous vegetables, DIM helps promote healthy estrogen metabolism and protect against breast, cervical, and uterine cancers. It also helps ease PMS symptoms.
Calcium
Coconut oil
Calcium has been shown to help prevent osteoporosis, PMS, and other conditions. It’s most effective when combined with magnesium. Research shows that Egg Shell Calcium (ESC)— a proprietary, whole-food form of calcium—is 20 percent more absorbable than other forms of calcium carbonate.
Coconut oil contains 44 percent lauric acid, shown to boost HDL (good) cholesterol. It can also help with thyroid function and blood sugar control.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for cardiovascular health. In one study, patients suffering from advanced congestive heart failure exhibited significantly improved heart function after supplementing with ubiquinol, the active form of CoQ10. Because the body’s ability to convert CoQ10 into ubiquinol diminishes with age, taking ubiquinol may be best for people over 40.
Chia seed Chia seeds have been called the world’s healthiest whole food for good reason. “Chia contains the highest amount of omega-3 fatty acids of any plant known, and also contains significant protein, fiber, and antioxidants,” says Wayne Coates, author of Chia: The Complete Guide to the Ultimate Superfood.
Cinnamon Research shows that this spice can lower blood glucose levels, helping to prevent or treat type 2 diabetes.
Cranberry Collagen Research shows that supplements of hydrolyzed types 1 and III collagen increase collagen levels in the skin. BioCell II—a patented version of hydrolyzed type II collagen—has been shown to have significant skin and joint health benefits. Certain nutrients, primarily silicon and hyaluronic acid, help promote healthy collagen formation.
Cranberry extract helps prevent UTIs by stopping harmful bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder and urinary tract.
Creatine Research shows that supplementing with creatine can help active adults improve strength by 5–15 percent and increase lean body mass by 1–3 percent.
Curcumin Conjugated linoleic acid Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), found in grass-fed meat, helps reduce body fat. A meta-analysis featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that Tonalin CLA also helped prevent fat regain.
Curcumin—the key therapeutic component of turmeric, the yellow curry spice— is a powerful antiinflammatory. It has shown benefits in treating heart failure, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Enzymes Your body has only a finite supply of digestive enzymes, and they diminish with age. Use a combination formula at meals to help relieve bloating and gas, and to enhance nutrient absorption.
Fish oil
Ginkgo biloba
Studies from around the globe have revealed that the benefits of fish oil, including boosted brain power, heart health, and immunity, come from two omega-3 fatty acids—EPA and DHA. Aim to get at least 1 g of combined EPA and DHA daily.
Ginkgo boosts blood flow in the brain and protects brain cells from premature death. The herb also shows promise for those with tinnitus.
Echinacea Use this herb to fight off bacterial and viral infections, including colds and flu. Some research shows that echinacea can help alleviate anxiety, too.
Elderberry Scientific analyses of European elderberry have found that the plant is packed with antioxidants and may fight bacteria. But its ability to overcome viruses may be its most valuable quality.
Fiber Fiber from plant sources lowers cholesterol, promotes weight loss, and decreases the risk of some cancers. For weight loss, try PGX, a proprietary blend of fibers that helps stabilize blood sugar and control hunger.
5-HTP Closely related to L-tryptophan, 5-HTP supplements have shown benefits in treating depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other aspects of brain function.
Flaxseed Flax and flaxseed oil are among the best sources of alphalinolenic acid (ALA), a vegetarian omega-3 fatty acid. They also contain plant lignans that are known to benefit breast health.
Garlic Garlic helps fight infection; lowers cholesterol levels and triglycerides; reduces blood pressure; and slows the progression of hardening of the arteries.
Ginseng Panax ginseng is an adaptogenic herb that helps reduce the response to stress. It also supports mental performance, immune function, and adrenal gland function.
Glucosamine & chondroitin A study of people with osteoarthritis in the knee or hip found that glucosamine supplements combined with walking brought significant pain relief and improved joint function. Chondroitin stimulates cartilage growth and the production of synovial fluid, which absorbs shock and lubricates joints.
Green coffee bean In studies, this supplement produced an average weight loss of 1–3 pounds per week, without a diet or exercise program.

Greens foods
Hyaluronic acid
Licorice
Maca
Melatonin
Oregano
Studies have shown that the healing properties of green foods (such as spirulina, chlorella, and wheat grass) are astounding, impacting cholesterol, blood pressure, immune response, cancer, and more. The common denominator is chlorophyll, which helps deliver oxygen to the blood. Green foods are also rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
Studies have shown that hyaluronic acid (HA) helps skin retain or reclaim the plump, wrinkle-free look of youth. It has the ability to bind moisture, which helps soften, smooth, tone, and rehydrate skin. It also improves joint health and helps ease arthritis pain.
Two types of licorice supplements are available: the first is a whole licorice root extract that contains glycyrrhetinic acid, which is helpful in resolving adrenal exhaustion but may cause hypertension if overused. The other type is deglycyrrhizinated (DGL)licorice in which the glycyrrhetinic acid has been removed to prevent blood pressure issues. Use DGL for heartburn, gastric reflux, and gastric and duodenal ulcers.
This Peruvian plant is thought to enhance sexual desire in men and women, possibly by both elevating mood and boosting testosterone. In menopausal women, maca may help reduce anxiety and depression, and treat sexual dysfunction.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain that initiates sleep. Darkness triggers melatonin production; however, the body’s output of the hormone declines as we age. As little as 0.5 mg can be therapeutic.
This multipurpose herb is used to treat and/or prevent colds and flu, sore throat, sinus congestion, bacterial infections, bronchitis, rashes, aches, and fungal infections. It’s rich in antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and some omega-3s.
Magnesium
Milk thistle
This key mineral is critical to almost all enzymatic functions in the body. It is involved in energy production, protein formation, cell replication, and muscle relaxation. After potassium, magnesium is the most concentrated intracellular mineral.
This herb is a premier liver health nutrient. Its active ingredient is silymarin, which is a concentrated source of antioxidants. Milk thistle has been used in Europe as a treatment for liver disease since the 16th century.
Green tea EGCG is considered the chief ingredient responsible for green tea’s health-enhancing benefits. It has been tested in studies as a weight-loss aid. Green tea is also naturally rich in L-theanine, a calming, anti-anxiety amino acid.
Holy basil One of the most revered plants in India, this herb is most often used to help the body handle stress better and also ease respiratory ailments.
20
Iron Iron is an essential mineral that plays a complex role in immunity. A deficiency can impair immune function—and increase susceptibility to infection. But have your iron levels measured before taking a supplement. Iron is necessary for bacteria to reproduce, so if you supplement with iron and develop an infection, take a break from it.
Krill In a study from Nutrition Research, 2 grams daily of krill oil—which comes from tiny creatures eaten by whales, penguins, and seals—increased blood levels of omega-3 fats significantly more than the same amount of fish oil.
Lycopene, lutein, & zeaxanthin Found in tomatoes and other red foods, lycopene can slow the increase in prostate size and lower levels of prostate specific antigen, a marker of prostate cancer risk. Lutein and zeaxanthin help ward off macular degeneration and improve visual function in people with macular degeneration.
Medicinal mushrooms These potent fungi offer more healthpromoting and disease-fighting benefits than almost any other natural medicine or food. The most widely used are reishi, shiitake, turkey tail, maitake, tremella, and wood ear fungus.
Natto As a supplement, this fermented food helps dissolve excess fibrin in blood vessels, which improves circulation, breaks down blood clots, and reduces risk of severe clotting. It also reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases HDL (good) cholesterol.
OPCs These flavonoids found in high concentrations in grape seed and pine bark, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Phosphatidylserine Phosphatidylserine (PS) is most abundant in brain cells. A number of clinical trials have validated the ability of supplemental PS to improve memory, learning, word recall, concentration, and mood in subjects suffering from age-related cognitive decline.
Plant sterols These substances can block the body’s absorption of cholesterol, and some studies suggest that sterols can lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol) by as much as 15 percent.

Probiotics
Resveratrol
Sea buckthorn
Vitamin C
Found in fermented foods, these friendly bacteria can help relieve digestive distress and also boost immunity.
Resveratrol, the key ingredient in red wine, gained notoriety after several animal studies found that it extends life. It has also been shown to calm inflammation, balance blood sugar, protect against tumors, and enhance physical and mental performance.
This berry is known throughout Europe and Asia as the “beauty berry” for its ability to promote softer, younger-looking skin. Research has also shown that sea buckthorn berry helps to strengthen immunity and protect the heart.
Vitamin C plays key roles in energy production; mood; skin and bone health; blood vessel strength; and cartilage maintenance. Ester-C, a proprietary, non-acidic form of the vitamin, is easier for many people to digest.
Ribose
Selenium
“Ribose is what the energy molecules in our bodies are made from,” explains Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic! Consequently, the supplement optimizes energy levels. It also improves sleep and mental clarity and eases pain.
Selenium is an important mineral that almost no one gets enough of through diet. It’s an antioxidant powerhouse and immune booster.
Protein powder Protein powders can help you lose weight by increasing the number of calories you burn. Here’s why: replacing some carbs and fats with lean protein will slightly increase your metabolic rate because the body burns more calories when breaking down protein than other types of food.
Pycnogenol This proprietary pine bark extract benefits the heart and blood vessels in many ways, including helping to prevent excessive clumping of platelets in the blood.
Quercetin Use this plant flavonoid to reduce inflammation and combat allergies (quercetin reduces the release of histamine from immune cells).
Red yeast rice Red yeast rice has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, and human studies since the 1970s have found that it can lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol.
22
Rhodiola rosea This adaptogenic herb can help the body cope with stress and fatigue.
SAM-e A literature review published in the journal Clinical and Investigative Medicine found that “there appears to be a role for SAM-e in the treatment of major depression in adults.” The supplement has also been shown to help ease pain.
Saw palmetto This herb is a key supplement for men over 40. It works by stopping testosterone from converting into DHT, a compound that causes prostate cells to multiply.
St. John’s wort In one meta-analysis, this flowering herb was found to be as effective as antidepressant drugs, with fewer side effects.
7-Keto DHEA 7-keto DHEA can help you lose weight and stay trim by boosting metabolism.
Trace minerals Trace minerals include zinc, copper, iron, chromium, strontium, selenium, iodine, manganese, and molybdenum. All of these minerals should be found in multimineral or trace mineral supplements.
Vitamin D3 Vitamin D3 is the preferred and best absorbed form of the sunshine vitamin. Research has shown that it reduces the long-term risk of cancer; lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s and related diseases; promotes strong, healthy bones; and also helps fend off colds and flu.
Vitamin K Research shows that vitamin K can have striking benefits in preventing and reversing osteoporosis, controlling blood sugar, and maybe even reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease.

CHRONIC SINUSITIS
is a common health condition that affects 14 out of every 100 people in the United States. While these problems may not seem serious, they can be an expression of imbalances within the immune or digestive systems. In addition to the typical sneezing and runny nose, sinus infections may cause headaches, abdominal pain, and even menstrual problems. Because there is only a thin plate of bone between the sinuses and brain, sinus infections can cause mental fogginess and a lack of concentration.
COPIOUS CAUSES Acute sinusitis, most often caused by allergies or the common cold, can progress to chronic sinusitis, which involves abnormal production of sinus fluid and swollen, inflamed nasal passages. This transition to chronic sinusitis can result from certain physiological, anatomical, and environmental factors; immune system imbalances; infectious agents, such as bacteria, fungus, or other pathogens; and allergies. It may seem like a stretch to link allergies with digestion, but they’re actually quite interconnected. In fact, a common source of allergies is inflammation of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. When inflammation occurs, large

molecules can enter the circulation. The immune system then launches an attack. The result is an allergic reaction that initiates an inflammatory process, ultimately affecting the sinuses. Two well-known dietary contributors to sinus congestion are dairy products and gluten. Avoiding these two food groups often leads to improvement in sinus problems. Poor indoor air quality also plays a large role in aggravating the cycle of chronic sinusitis. Research has shown that reducing fungal air concentrations using a high-efficiency particulate air filtration system (HEPA) helps restore the sinus mucosa to a normal state. You can also lower your exposure to other allergens, such as dust mites and animal dander, by removing carpeting and feather bedding from the environment and using pillow and mattress covers that are mite proof.
berberine, a plant alkaloid with antibacterial, antifungal and antiinflammatory properties. For complete instructions on safe use of a Neti pot, visit himalayaninstitute.org.
Chronic sinusitis is most effectively addressed using safe and natural remedies—antibiotics only provide temporary, partial relief. The holistic treatment of chronic sinusitis requires a multifaceted approach that addresses allergies, the digestive system, dental health, immune support, circulation, and drainage. Key components of this approach include manual therapies, detoxification, acupuncture, diet, herbs, supplements, and homeopathic remedies —all of which offer long-term support, not just for sinuses, but for your overall health as well. Some particularly effective therapies include:
reishi and cordyceps, support immunity, digestion, and circulation while also reducing inflammation. Vitamin C has antihistamine, anti-
Neural Therapy For more severe
sinus conditions, neural therapy— which involves injecting the tonsils and sinuses with homeopathic remedies and an anesthetic—can be effective. To find a practitioner, try the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (naturopathic.org). Cranial-Sacral Therapy Cranialsacral therapy can help improve sinus conditions by creating more space between the cranial bones, promoting normal drainage, and relieving sinus pressure. inflammatory, and immune-boosting properties at doses of 500–1,000 mg taken three times daily. Quercetin and hesperidin are two
powerful plant flavonoids that can both inhibit inflammation-producing enzymes and reduce the release of histamine from immune cells. Take 500 mg of each, one to three times daily. Bromelain, an enzyme found in
pineapple, has anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps thin and expel mucus. Clinical trials have shown that bromelain helps reduce inflammation of the nasal mucosa in acute sinusitis patients. Bromelain needs to be taken on an empty stomach, 250–500 mg one to three times daily. Zinc is necessary for optimal immune
function; a deficiency can increase inflammation. Take 25–50 mg daily. Honokiol, a compound extracted
from Magnolia officinalis bark, offers powerful anti-inflammatory and immune support.

4 Steps to Better Sleep
BY MARY ANN O’DELL, MS, RD
HAVING TROUBLE GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? You’re not alone. Getting a good night’s sleep is a problem for millions of Americans. Anyone at any age can experience sleeplessness due to stress and anxiety, pain, shifting work schedules, and life changes. Getting adequate sleep is important for physical and mental restoration each day. Lack of sufficient sleep can result in fatigue, mood swings, stress, and a higher probability of getting sick. Here are four steps to help you get a better night’s sleep.
MANAGE STRESS. Stress is a common contributor to insomnia and sleep disturbance. Manage stress naturally by supporting nerve health with B vitamins and herbs like passionflower or chamomile. Try yoga or deep breathing exercises in the evening to calm the body and mind. CREATE COMFORT. Take a nice soaking bath to relax your body and soothe any aches and pains. Utilize natural and herbal remedies to soothe any muscle pains prior to sleep. Make sure your bed and bedroom are comfortable—a cool, dark room helps support sleep. TRY MELATONIN. Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the body that regulates the body’s circadian rhythm (sleep and wake cycles). Melatonin levels decline significantly after the age of 40, which scientists believe may be responsible for sleep problems that increase with age. UTILIZE HERBS. Valerian has been shown in studies to help improve the quality of sleep, reduce the length of time it takes to fall asleep, and reduce the number of awakenings throughout the night. Valerian can be used by itself or in conjunction with herbal nervines that nourish and calm the nerves such as hops, passionflower, and chamomile. These act on the body naturally, without the unwanted side effects common to prescription and over-thecounter sleep medicines.

Ease Menopause Symptoms Naturally
BY SALLY KARLOVITZ, CN
IN MANY CULTURES around the world, the transition into menopause is a highly revered time of life for a woman. However, for many women in Western cultures, menopause is dreaded and feared as the time of hot flashes, night sweats, erratic mood swings, insomnia, and low libido. Menopause does not have to be difficult. A 2-step approach of diet and supplements can help support the body and lessen the symptoms of menopause.
DIETARY SUPPORT Good nutrition is the foundation for overall health. During menopause, reduce your consumption of sugar, animal fats and caffeine, and emphasize fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Include soy and flaxseeds, foods that naturally contain phytoestrogens that support hormonal health.
NATURAL SUPPLEMENT SUPPORT As in all stages of their lives, women going through menopause should be taking a high potency daily multivitamin and a bone support formula. Omega-6 essential fatty acids—from flax, evening primrose or borage oils—have been shown to be beneficial for hormonal complaints. GLA omega-6 fatty acid has been shown to help support the building of good hormones in the body. Traditionally, women have relied on GLA from evening primrose to help with both PMS and menopausal imbalances. Herbs that help hormonal balance include black cohosh, dong quai and motherwort. Black cohosh naturally contains phytoestrogens, while dong quai contains phytosterols. The phytosterols in dong quai may help reduce symptoms of estrogen deficiency, including hot flashes. Motherwort helps cool the body, helping to reduce hot flashes. For women who are found to be estrogen dominant through hormone testing, natural progesterone may offer some help. Progesterone works in balance with estrogen, so less progesterone during menopause can cause the bad effects of estrogen to surface. Using a natural topical progesterone cream can help balance the estrogen to progesterone ratio. With these natural approaches, you can ease the symptoms of menopause and make it a natural transition in your life.

something new under the sun Sunscreens have evolved. Here’s how to find one with safe ingredients and powerful protection
N
ew labeling on sun-protection products will make it easier for you to know if you’re getting the protection you’ve been promised. The FDA’s new rules allow sunscreens to be labeled “broad spectrum” followed by an SPF number only if they meet specific criteria. They must protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburn, as well as ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which contribute to skin cancer and cause wrinkles. (UVA protection is important, as windows often block UVB but not UVA rays). Sunscreens of at least SPF 15 can be labeled as protecting against sunburn, early signs of aging, and skin cancer. Sunscreens lower than SPF 15 and without broad spectrum status must carry a warning that reads, in part, “This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.” Products can no longer claim they are “waterproof” or that they provide “all day protection.” Instead, products that pass muster can be labeled “water resistant,” and all sunscreens must tell consumers to reapply every two hours. While these new regulations are a big step forward, consumers still need to keep on their toes. Don’t be fooled by a super-high SPF, for instance. The FDA has proposed prohibiting SPF claims higher than 50, but has not issued regulations yet. The thought is that you might get a false sense of security from those big numbers and wait too long before reapplying, thus overexposing your skin to the sun.

safe shopping More and more consumers are looking for ways to avoid genetically modified foods (GMOs). Here’s why—and how you can join them
W
hat’s the quickest, easiest way to avoid buying foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs)? Look for the Non-GMO Project Verified seal and the USDA Organic seal on the label. Increasing numbers of consumers are doing just that. The Non-GMO Project Verified label is the fastest growing label claim in the natural foods industry, and sales of organic food products in the United States continue to grow each year. The Non GMO Project is North America’s only independent verification program for products made according to the best practices for GMO
avoidance, and USDA certified organic products cannot intentionally include any GMO ingredients. So, why the growing trend to seek out and buy non-GMO foods? Here are a few reasons: The desire for pure food. Many say they want unadulterated real food and don’t want to be unwitting consumers of foods that have been tampered with and have not been safety tested. The desire to protect the environment. A number of shoppers say they are disturbed about the ecological impacts of genetically modified (GM) foods. GM seeds can contaminate organic and non-GMO crops, and once released into the wild, they can’t be recalled. Also, the majority of GM foods are modified to be herbicide resistant and are sprayed with higher amounts of herbicides that pollute water and harm plants and wildlife. The desire to protect health. Animal studies indicate that there may be health risks from consuming GM foods, including immune system and gastrointestinal problems. In humans, the rates of allergies and inflammatory bowel disease have risen in tandem with the introduction of genetically modified foods. Not surprisingly, food purveyors are responding to the growing demand. More and more companies are enrolling in the Non-GMO Project, and those companies are submitting more and more products for verification. As of October

Taco Salad with Broiled Chicken Strips* SERVES 4 At-risk GMO ingredients in typical Mexican cooking include corn, cheese, meat from animals fed GMO feed, and vegetable oils. By seeking out and buying organic or non-GMO versions—and using olive oil instead of canola, corn, cottonseed, or soybean oils—it’s easy to make this versatile taco salad recipe free of GMOs.

2013, more that 14,000 products had received a Non-GMO Project seal, and sales of such products had topped $5 billion annually.
Check the Label The nine genetically modified foods currently on the market are: corn, canola, cottonseed, soybeans, sugar beets, alfalfa, papaya (from Hawaii only), and some zucchini and yellow squash. GMOs are hidden in countless products that contain ingredients derived from these foods, such as cornstarch, canola and cottonseed oils, soy lecithin, and sugar made from sugar beets (“safe” sugar should be labeled organic or made from sugar cane). To avoid GMOs, steer clear of these at-risk foods and their derivatives. Or look for 24 different categories of Non-GMO Project Verified products. These include cheeses, chips, cereals, candies, and the most recent addition, Non-GMO meat, fi sh, and eggs. To search the complete list, visit nongmoproject.org.

ntil recently, Americans have been mostly unaware of the benefits of sea vegetables as food. But archaeological evidence suggests that their consumption dates back to prehistoric times. Oceangoing cultures from Japan to Ireland have relied on a harvest from the sea that went far beyond fi sh. And with good reason. These ocean-bred plants offer a unique array of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer activities. Sea vegetables’ potency is ascribed to their powerful lineup of diverse minerals, resulting from their aqueous environment and harsh growing conditions. In fact, sea vegetables contain more minerals than any land-based food plant, and many of these are the same minerals found in human blood, which makes absorption a breeze. Sea vegetables’ antioxidant offerings extend beyond the standard carotenoids and flavonoids to several other types, including alkaloids. Of special interest are recent studies at the University of California indicating that sea vegetables may have a role to play in warding off certain estrogen-related cancers—especially breast cancer—through both their cholesterol-lowering effects and their ability to modify menstrual cycles. Add in significant amounts of B vitamins, iodine, calcium, and vitamins C, E, and K, and it becomes apparent that sea vegetables are truly an underwater treasure.
