Taking enough fish oil daily may be a viable alternative to blood pressure medication for some, according to a review of 70 trials in the American Journal of Hypertension. Researchers found that the blood-pressure-lowering effects of fish oil “could prevent an individual from requiring medication to control their hypertension or could help maintain an individual in a lower stage of progressive hypertension.” Effective daily doses were between 2 and 3.8 grams combined of EPA and DHA, the key fats found in fish oil. Sources of EPA and DHA include different types of seafood, EPAand DHA-fortified foods, fish oil, algae oil, and fish oil supplements.

iewed as an “energy blaster” by Dr. Oz, moringa is rapidly becoming a popular green-food supplement. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this versatile plant. A Canadian scientist who studies water purification methods calls moringa “one of the world’s most useful trees,” because it grows in inhospitably dry tropical soils and its seeds can be used to purify water, thereby reducing the spread of disease. In regions where food is scarce, moringa leaves provide lifesaving nutrition, and other parts of the tree are used as medicine. At Johns Hopkins University, researchers are examining moringa’s potential cancer-fighting properties.

Moringa: Good for Whatever Ails You? In India, the roots, bark, seeds, and leaves of the Moringa oleifera tree have been used medicinally for about 5,000 years. And it has a similar history of use in Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and Australia. Digestive enzymes, on the other hand, are produced throughout the digestive tract to help break down the foods we eat into the nutrients our body needs. If food isn’t properly processed in the digestive tract, we can experience gas, bloating, and stomach upset.

E

nzymes are biologically active proteins that play a key role in every function in the human body. They’re essential for the breakdown of food and the absorption of nutrients. They help maintain heartbeat, muscle function, and hormone balance. In fact, enzymes are involved in at least 4,000 different biochemical reactions essential to life— about half of which involve digestion.

Form and Function Enzymes are the match that sparks countless reactions, but each works in its own specific way. “Think of enzymes as tools, with each having a slightly different function,” says Tom Bohager, author of Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes. For instance, the fat-digesting enzyme lipase can’t break down protein.

It can only impact dietary fat.

While there are an estimated 5,000 enzymes hard at work in the human body, they typically fall into two categories: metabolic and digestive. “Metabolic enzymes enable us to see, hear, feel, move, and think,” says Professor Walter J. Crinnion, ND, Chair of the Department of Environmental Medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona. “Every organ, every tissue, and 12

Are detox regimens safe—or even necessary— for children?

A:

If I had been asked this question 20 years ago, I would have gently explained that kids are clean—they haven’t had time to accumulate toxins or sully their health with smoking, drinking too much alcohol, eating junk food, or other bad habits.

Recently, however, we’ve seen reports about noxious chemicals—many never properly tested by the FDA—detected in breast milk. States all over the country are mounting legislative actions to ban BPA, phthalates, and flame retardant chemicals in products targeted to people younger than age 7.

To put it plainly, today’s kids are bombarded with so many chemicals, it boggles the imagination. One of the worst offenders is fabric softener. If you

have young children, please try to “green” your cleaning and laundry supplies as much as possible.

Unfortunately, today’s children bear a higher chemical burden than they would have 100 years ago. The list of “toxicity” symptoms is varied, but may include: difficulty with elimination (constipation, profuse sweating), headaches, rashes, bleeding gums, muscle and joint aches, difficulty breathing or concentrating, memory problems, heart palpitations, and sensitivity to sugar, MSG, or grains.

Chubby kids, in particular, are more likely to be “toxic” because the body uses fatty tissues to wall off chemicals that can’t be broken down.

A basic approach to detox, which works great for kids as well as adults, is to combine a mild laxative (such as aloe, prune juice, or fennel seeds) with a bulking agent (such as psyllium fiber for short-term use or ground flax seeds for a long-term solution).

It’s also important to use a safe liver support agent. I usually suggest milk thistle, an amazing liver-healing herb.

Use a high-quality product and give your child the recommended dose for one to three months, once per year.

CREATE A COLORFUL DIET Make food visually appealing to children by incorporating a rainbow of colors in meals. Here are some examples:

RED: Tomatoes, red pepper, raspberries, radishes, and apples.

ORANGE: Carrots, pumpkin, yam, squash, rutabaga, and salmon.

YELLOW: Yellow pepper, lemon, summer squash, sweet potato, and pineapple.

GREEN: Avocado, limes, spinach, kale, chard, collard greens, broccoli, and sprouts.

BLUE/VIOLET: Grapes, blueberries, eggplant, black beans, and red cabbage.

Ideally, water should be your child’s only beverage. Of course, this can be challenging with all of the tempting juices, sodas, and other drinks available on the market. But try to make all other beverages “treats” (with the exception of non-caffeinated herbal teas), and never give your kids conventional soda. Diet sodas are the worst—nothing but a brew of liquid chemicals.

Movement is also critical for stimulating lymphatic circulation and drainage.

Try to take a 20-minute walk every day.

And ideally, you and your children want to break a light sweat for about 40 minutes, 3–4 times per week.

Another problem that we all face is that the quality of our food isn’t as high as it was 100 years ago. Conventional agriculture, which relies on fertilizers and pesticides, has depleted the soil.

So it’s important that your child take a high-quality multivitamin. I also suggest (and use myself) a green foods powder.

Incorporating a rainbow of colorful, natural foods—ideally organic—into your child’s diet goes a long way toward providing the building blocks a body needs to promote tissue healing and the innate detoxification process. Avoid the three big “bad” foods—refined flours, corn syrup in all its permutations, and hydrogenated oils. Steam, broil, or bake your foods. Eat fresh greens daily. And try to eat some raw food every day.

Are You Missing Magnesium?

MAGNESIUM IS A MINERAL that has truly been understated, although it’s critical to optimum health. This mineral is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, so its role is nothing less than essential. What can magnesium do for you?

BONE HEALTH. Magnesium is most commonly associated with calcium. Magnesium is essential for proper calcium absorption by bones, and 40% of the body’s magnesium content is in bones.

BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL. Magnesium is involved in blood glucose control in the body. A recent study found that magnesium intake was low in non-diabetics with metabolic syndrome, and researchers suggested that increasing magnesium intake may protect against insulin resistance.

A separate study found that people with the highest intake of magnesium were half as likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared with those who had the lowest intake HEART HEALTH. Magnesium plays an important role in regulating blood pressure and preventing blood clots and stroke. A recent review of research showed that higher intakes of magnesium may cut heart disease risk.

MUSCLE RELAXATION. A deficiency of magnesium is associated with insomnia and anxiety, so maintaining magnesium status can help improve relaxation and rest. Taking extra magnesium in the evening can help relax you and improve sleep.

ENERGY. Although magnesium helps with relaxation, it can also help with energy. One of the primary roles of magnesium is to stabilize ATP, the body’s energy molecule. Magnesium may help optimize oxygen use so you feel more energized. This may explain why chronic deficiency of magnesium can result in low energy, irritability, and weakness.

CHRONIC SINUSITIS

is a common health condition that affects 14 out of every 100 people in the United States. While these problems may not seem serious, they can be an expression of imbalances within the immune or digestive systems. In addition to the typical sneezing and runny nose, sinus infections may cause headaches, abdominal pain, and even menstrual problems. Because there is only a thin plate of bone between the sinuses and brain, sinus infections can cause mental fogginess and a lack of concentration.

COPIOUS CAUSES Acute sinusitis, most often caused by allergies or the common cold, can progress to chronic sinusitis, which involves abnormal production of sinus fluid and swollen, inflamed nasal passages. This transition to chronic sinusitis can result from certain physiological, anatomical, and environmental factors; immune system imbalances; infectious agents, such as bacteria, fungus, or other pathogens; and allergies.

It may seem like a stretch to link allergies with digestion, but they’re actually quite interconnected. In fact, a common source of allergies is inflammation of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. When inflammation occurs, large

molecules can enter the circulation. The immune system then launches an attack.

The result is an allergic reaction that initiates an inflammatory process, ultimately affecting the sinuses.

Getting a good night’s sleep is a problem for millions of Americans. Anyone at any age can experience sleeplessness due to stress and anxiety, pain, shifting work schedules, and life changes. Getting adequate sleep is important for physical and mental restoration each day. Lack of sufficient sleep can result in fatigue, mood swings, stress, and a higher probability of getting sick. Here are four steps to help you get a better night’s sleep.

MANAGE STRESS. Stress is a common contributor to insomnia and sleep disturbance. Manage stress naturally by supporting nerve health with B vitamins and herbs like passionflower or chamomile. Try yoga or deep breathing exercises in the evening to calm the body and mind.

N

ew labeling on sun-protection products will make it easier for you to know if you’re getting the protection you’ve been promised. The FDA’s new rules allow sunscreens to be labeled “broad spectrum” followed by an SPF number only if they meet specific criteria. They must protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburn, as well as ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which contribute to skin cancer and cause wrinkles. (UVA protection is important, as windows often block UVB but not UVA rays).

Sunscreens of at least SPF 15 can be labeled as protecting against sunburn, early signs of aging, and skin cancer. Sunscreens lower than SPF 15 and without broad spectrum status must carry a warning that reads, in part, “This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.”

Products can no longer claim they are “waterproof” or that they provide “all day protection.” Instead, products that pass muster can be labeled “water resistant,” and all sunscreens must tell consumers to reapply every two hours.

While these new regulations are a big step forward, consumers still need to keep on their toes. Don’t be fooled by a super-high SPF, for instance. The FDA has proposed prohibiting SPF claims higher than 50, but has not issued regulations yet. The thought is that you might get a false sense of security from those big numbers and wait too long before reapplying, thus overexposing your skin to the sun.

W

hat’s the quickest, easiest way to avoid buying foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

Look for the Non-GMO Project Verified seal and the USDA Organic seal on the label.

Increasing numbers of consumers are doing just that. The Non-GMO Project Verified label is the fastest growing label claim in the natural foods industry, and sales of organic food products in the United States continue to grow each year. The Non GMO Project is North America’s only independent verification program for products made according to the best practices for GMO

avoidance, and USDA certified organic products cannot intentionally include any GMO ingredients. So, why the growing trend to seek out and buy non-GMO foods? Here are a few reasons: The desire for pure food. Many say they want unadulterated real food and don’t want to be unwitting consumers of foods that have been tampered with and have not been safety tested.

The desire to protect the environment. A number of shoppers say they are disturbed about the ecological impacts of genetically modified (GM) foods. GM seeds can contaminate organic and non-GMO crops, and once released into the wild, they can’t be recalled. Also, the majority of GM foods are modified to be herbicide resistant and are sprayed with higher amounts of herbicides that pollute water and harm plants and wildlife.

The desire to protect health. Animal studies indicate that there may be health risks from consuming GM foods, including immune system and gastrointestinal problems. In humans, the rates of allergies and inflammatory bowel disease have risen in tandem with the introduction of genetically modified foods.

Not surprisingly, food purveyors are responding to the growing demand. More and more companies are enrolling in the Non-GMO Project, and those companies are submitting more and more products for verification. As of October

To avoid GMOs, steer clear of these at-risk foods and their derivatives.

1. Preheat broiler or grill. Mix seasonings together in medium bowl. Coat chicken in 1 Tbs. olive oil, and then in seasoning mixture. Broil on each side until chicken is cooked through.

Remove chicken from heat, and slice into ¼-inch wide strips.

2. Mix salsa, olive oil, and lime juice together in large bowl.

Set aside.
