Introduction
‘Waste Not Want Not’ is about how wasting food has become such an issue to the general public. The publication is aiming to raise awareness about how much food we waste and how to prevent it. A section in the publication is about freeganism, and how people may find it to be a taboo subject and how others cannot look past it’s disgust. This type specification will show you the grid methods that I have used to lay everything out, the font families I have used, the colour scheme, front cover, paper stock, images and the binding technique.
Grids & Guides
The page size of my book is 148x210mm (A5), I wanted to keep the book small to represent the size of a small leaflet that you would pick up in a grocery store for people to read while they are buying food to get a greater understanding of waste food. I went for a simple grid 4 rows x 2 columns. I kept it quite strict so that it was a constant flow with in the book.
I made the gutter for my grid column 24 pt, (8.467mm) so that I would have enough spacing in between the images and the text, and a gutter for my grid rows of 12 pt, (4.233mm) so that my baseline grid would lock on to my layout guide. I kept both my gutters of the same multiple just so I could keep everything consistent.

Fonts & Typography
I used three particular fonts for my book, for the chapter pages and front cover I used Egyptian Slate Pro. For the headers and emphasised type, I used Trade Gothic Next LT Pro, and I used Agmena W1G for the body text. I had a sans serif for the titles and a serif for the body text so that I’ve kept to a traditional rule, but dressing the book with a contemporary style.
My baseline grid and leading had an increment of 12pt, so I chose my body text typeface to be Agmena W1G at 10pt.

Front Cover
For the front cover, I kept it simple, with simple colours of black for the title and a wheat colour for the backdrop. The title of the book suggests what the book is going to be about, but I was influenced by a world war 2 poster about the whole battle against waste food.
Colour
I stuck with a basic colour scheme but I used colours that represented natural looking things like foods. I used a wheat colour and a bright green.

Paper Stock
I chose a medium gsm matt paper (150gsm) so it didnt have much texture to it, to represent the form of a handout leaflet. So it was crisp and clean. I also used a high gsm matt card (300gsm) for the front cover.
Images & Photography
I primarily got my photos of shutter stock and Google images, but edited them to my liking to fit the theme of the publication. I edited some of the photographs in photoshop as a duotone image, with just black and green as the colours. Besides photographs I added my own infographics that I designed on illustrator to add to the variation of images. I made them simplistic to show the message that I was trying to get across without making it confusing.
Binding
My publication is perfect bound, as I think this is the best way to bind a book. Due to the nature of my page furniture and slab serif typeface I felt the rectangular finish from perfect binding suited the aesthetic, I personally I feel there were no binding techniques that suited my rationale.
Page Furniture
I chose to keep my page furniture minimal but still there just to separate the text from images, and to separate block text from other text. The page furniture ties in with the aesthetic theme that I have chosen as well.
