PASSION IN DESIGN The Boatyard’s architect Brian Donovan has an enviable history of award winning architecture to his name. As one of the principal innovators in creating subtropical living spaces, his designs have influenced the way we engage with inside and outside to create the ultimate lifestyle for Queensland. Brian has a past and present deeply immersed in boating. Having spent two years in Japan, Brian returned to live on the Brisbane River on a classic Moreton Bay Cruiser. He has travelled along its many reaches and around the islands of Moreton Bay. This afforded Brian the opportunity to refine his connection with place and consolidate it as part of his design thinking for The Boatyard project. With deep admiration for the art and craft of classic boat builders, Brian recognises that their superb ability to shape, fold and lay hull timbers over expressed frames has distinct parallels with the traditions of timber house construction. Using a materiality derived from his experiences and echoing this history of The Boatyard, a rich palette of finishes, textures and materials has been selected that exemplify the quality and beauty of this space. The highly refined parts and considered spaces provide life-enhancing charm. The sheer joy of living is heightened through awareness of materials, privacy, connectedness and climate.
