CHARLIE LOUDERMILK PARK Atlanta, Georgia
Jim Durrett Buckhead CID (404) 842-2686 Strategically located in the heart of the Buckhead Village at the intersection of Peachtree and Roswell Roads, the oneacre Charlie Loudermilk Park had long been underutilized. HGOR was retained by the Buckhead Community Improvement District to develop a flexible, pedestrianoriented design. Working closely with the stakeholder base, HGOR identified key qualities for a successful urban park: connectivity to surrounding uses; linkages and pedestrian access; safety; security; comfort; and programmability. The design vision has garnered strong community and business endorsement as well as significant financial support. Plans feature clusters of moveable seating areas that flank a lawn panel; fully accessible terraces provide a variety of seating and viewing opportunities below canopy trees and shade structures. A vertical drainage sand system will prevent soil compaction, extending the life and quality of the turf itself. Special features include a bell tower, water feature and a statue of Charlie Loudermilk, the park’s honoree. Phase One construction began in early 2014, with eventual expansion to four acres.
