Introduction For many years my wife and I have traveled throughout North America teaching homeschoolers art. We estimate that we have instructed more than 50,000 Christian students in such a capacity. In each of these three-day classes we gave the students a homework assignment: Draw a story from the Bible. Through a wealth of such artwork, it was revealed to us what Bible stories were children’s favorites. Unequivocally, boys love to draw the story of David and Goliath, while girls seem to favor Queen Esther. Younger children (ages 5 through 7) fervently illustrate Noah’s ark and baby Jesus in the manger. Not far behind in popularity are “Joseph and the coat of many colors,” “Moses in the bulrushes” and “Jonah and the big fish.” Older students are more interested in stories such as “the empty tomb,” “the ascension of Christ” and “Elijah being swept into heaven by a whirlwind.” Art and the Bible for Children has been created for the very young. It is simple to understand, enjoyable and not too wordy, yet staying as true to God’s word as possible. With this in mind, we would like to take you through the Bible with what we believe are children’s favorites. Our purpose is not to tell every story, but those that are the most popular and create the most joy and interest among children. I have found, during many Sunday mornings as a Sunday school teacher, that little ones love art. And what better a combination than to offer Christian children art and the Bible? At the end of each story are basic discussion questions for them to answer, along with art lessons. Our vision is that this book will be used as a wonderful teaching tool for Christian households and Sunday school teachers around the world. We hope you enjoy Art and the Bible for Children. Please write and let us know. In Christ,

A special thanks to a very gifted homeschooler, Joshua Olds. Joshua is from Indiana and was a teenager when we encouraged him to translate Art & the Bible for Children. For the next year and a half, Joshua arduously worked on rewriting many of the Bible stories, making them adaptable for the enjoyment and understanding of children. We commend Joshua for his hard work and the wonderful creative style. We also commend all of the Christian children across this vast nation who have added their creative touch to Art & the Bible for Children.

Discussion: 1. What is the section of the Bible called that was written before the life of Jesus? 2. What is the section of the Bible called that was written after the life of Jesus? 3. Have students close their eyes and read to them the names of all the books in the Old Testament. Then, see how many they can recite, or remember. The books of the Old Testament are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. A. B. Lesson 1: Can you print “Old” over Testament on one of the books (A), and “New” over Testament Testament Testament on the other book (B)? Use a black pencil and print neatly. Make sure to use the guidelines for the top and bottom of each letter. Finally, print Bible on the book below (D). Lesson 2: Prophets were people who told people to repent and of the coming of Jesus. They were people whom God had spoken to and were told to tell others what He had said. Can you draw a prophet like the one below (E)? Can you draw a staff in his hand? Finally, give him a nose, hair, eyes and long beard. Use your black drawing pen, drawing him on another sheet of paper. “Prophet” Artwork by: C. D. E. Libby Wells Age 6
