Mount Pleasant Hunter Valley Mount Pleasant is one of the great wine estates of Australia, recently awarded the 2017 James Halliday’s Winery of the Year. Mount Pleasant is home to four of the Hunter Valley’s most iconic vineyard sites – Old Hill, Old Paddock, Lovedale and Rosehill. Visit our cellar door to taste benchmark wines among the scenery of the surrounding vineyards and stunning backdrop of the Brokenback range. How would you describe what your region is doing best right now? The Hunter has, and always will, produce the best Semillon in the world. It is the hero grape variety of the region. Why are you so proud to be part of this region? This region is proud of its history and as one of the older, more established wineries, we have a great respect among our peers for our wines and sites.
Have you evolved your approach to winemaking in recent times? Mount Pleasant has gone back to its original vision of its owner and industry legend Maurice O’Shea, producing wines that hold true characteristics to the Hunter Valley region and its vineyard sites. We are experimenting with small amounts of alternate varietals like Fiano and Tempranillo, but our main focus will always lie with our unbeatable Semillon and Shiraz. Which wines do you see as most exciting in your range right now? Our Mountain Range because they were wines originally created by Maurice O’Shea in the early 1940s; they were about style as opposed to individual varieties. We don’t mention anything about the varieties on our front label and simply promote the three wines as Light, Medium and Full Bodied Hunter Dry Reds.

2008 Misura 800 Shiraz “This is a wine for emperors and kings. It is tight and precise, and doesn’t need to speak: it is far too important. The fruit is intense and degree: the result of low-yield, lowirrigation vines from Australia’s best shiraz regions. It has the very best tight-grained French oak to provide some ginger and spice, but the density of the fruit simply soaks that wood up. Stunning. 96+++ points now, more as it matures. Shottesbrooke Vineyards McLaren Vale
Shottesbrooke’s journey began more than three decades ago when its founder, Nick Holmes, planted his first vineyard just outside of Myponga. From these vines, and the quality of fruit they produced, his desire to craft worldclass wines from McLaren Vale was born. Since these humble beginnings, Shottesbrooke continues to be built on a tradition of hard work, dedication and passion. The people, the place and the soul have come together, and under the steadfast guidance of General Manager and winemaker Hamish Maguire, it continues to grow and evolve. Other features at the vineyard: • Twice-annual Afternoon Delights (food, wine and live music event) and annual Twilight Tastings in December.

Yalumba Barossa Established in 1849, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery and remains fiercely independent and progressive through exclusive ownership by the Hill-Smith family. Led by fifth-generation chairman Robert Hill-Smith, teamwork is vital and decisions are the result of patience, consensus and innovation. There is foresight to micro-manage individual vineyards, a will to preserve the very old vines of the Barossa, and the knowledge to behave as an industry leader. With its own on-site cooperage, Yalumba has full control over the quality of oak used to age its collections of premium wine. Yalumba is also acutely aware of how its presence impacts the environment. Sustainability efforts include extensive replanting of cleared land to native vegetation and a drastic reduction in the use of artificial pesticides and chemicals. Ben Riggs, Mr. Riggs
Brad Rey, Zonte’s Footstep
Th e General Wine Bar & Kitchen (featuring Mr. Riggs Wine Co & Zonte’s Footstep) McLaren Vale The General Wine Bar & Kitchen – the cellar door for Mr Riggs and Zonte’s Footstep – is our home. We endeavour to nourish you with our vinous and culinary expressions. We pride ourselves on a daily two-course menu focusing on the freshest local ingredients. Here, wine flights are paired with morsels of contrasting and complementary flavours to heighten the wine experience.
How have you evolved your approach to winemaking in recent times? There’s a focus on ‘sense of place’ and influence of site with the grape variety at the heart of our wines. We are using less time in barrel/oak maturation for brighter fruit character while nurturing the structure of the wine from the variety’s own tannins and acidity.
How would you describe what your region is doing best right now? McLaren Vale is backing itself. Producers are taking the lead and working together to create innovative winery experiences for guests. Our collaborative and generous nature, unique combination of world-class wine and produce, with a beach lifestyle, ensures that our region offers a truly welcoming experience. Best known for shiraz, McLaren Vale is excelling in ultrapremium grenache and Italian varieties.
Which wines do you see as most exciting in your range right now? All of our Mediterranean varieties, but we have a soft spot for Zonte’s Footstep Canto di Lago – a sangiovese barbera that now includes lagrein to add more structure and complexity. Our Mr. Riggs Montepulciano is a crowd favourite, it has a serious structure and intensity with spectacular flavour.

Tasmania
Tamar Ridge Tamar Valley Tamar Ridge cellar door is just a 15-minute drive north of Launceston, on the western bank of the picturesque Tamar River. The full range of Tamar Ridge wines and Pirie sparkling can be tasted at cellar door, where our informative and friendly staff will guide you through the wine ranges. Plus, there is usually also the odd ‘hidden treasure’ – wines restricted to cellar door and not generally available. Tamar Ridge is a pioneer of pinot noir in Tasmania and produces quality wines that age well, and Pirie is one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed sparkling wine labels. What do you believe your region is doing best right now? Tasmania is performing at a high level across a number of varieties – pinot noir is the standout for us, but the acidity you retain from being in a cool region also means great riesling, pinot gris and sauvignon blanc.
In what ways have you evolved your approach to winemaking in recent times? We have tried to allow the vineyard to express itself in the wine, with less inputs going into the winemaking process and a greater use of natural ferments. Why are you proud to be a part of this region? Each vintage brings new challenges, but we think we have seen in the past few seasons that wineries here are challenging each other to produce higher quality wine. Which of your wines do you see as the most exciting right now? It’s difficult to pick one, but pinot noir is just a difficult beast to get right. We are starting to offer a greater range with our Single Block Pinots, and we really enjoy being able to show a wine that often expresses its small section of dirt or clone.

Why are you proud to be part of this region? It’s a young, vibrant region with interesting winemaking moving towards finer, brighter, crisper, more energetic styles. Young people are having a go and not getting stuck in a log jam. How have you evolved your winemaking approach in recent times? We are picking earlier based on flavour ripeness and balance, using less oak and ensuring it’s better quality and more refined when we do. We are also focusing on clonal selection, flexibility across unique sites and have a better understanding of soils, moisture and viticultural techniques.

Scotchmans Hill Bellarine Peninsula In April, we will celebrate the opening of our new, dedicated cellar door. It will feature stunning views over our estate vineyards to Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne. Scotchmans Hill, established in 1982, is in the heart of the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula and produces premium, cool, maritime wines of great elegance, depth and complexity. We are rated one of James Halliday’s Top 100 Wineries and 5 Star Winery. How have you evolved your approach to winemaking in recent times? Minimal intervention has been part of our ethos for more than 25 years. We began incorporating wild malolactic fermentation 25 years ago, and all red fermentations have been wild since 2007. Our white wines have also undergone wild ferment for the past seven or eight years. Each year we experiment with our techniques to ensure we are producing the best quality wines we can.
What is the Bellarine doing best right now? We are thrilled to see real growth in pinot noir and chardonnay, the heart of our portfolio and the Bellarine Peninsula. No matter which side of the climate change debate you sit, we see very strong growth in the cooler climate shiraz produced on the Bellarine Peninsula and cooler parts of Victoria. Which of your wines do you see as the most exciting right now? January saw the highly anticipated release of our 2015 Scotchmans Hill Bellarine Peninsula Chardonnay. The winemaking team say it’s a “ripper” and superbly balanced, largely due to 2015 being a fantastic vintage. We saw lovely balance between the cropping and vine, and the results of our additional vineyard investments are shining through. The quality and consistency is showing across all of our 2015 and 2016 wines.
