Introduce the thermometer and rain gauge, explaining how and why we use them. Have students record the indoor and outdoor temperature each day as part of the daily routine. Record the amount of rain collected in the rain gauge at the end of each week. Observe patterns over a fixed period of time. Using the weather graph, identify weather variables: sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy and snowy. Using a weekly weather journal, have students draw and/or write about the weather they observe over the course of a week. Read the book, What Will the Weather Be? Then have students observe the conditions of the sky and the current temperature to predict the weather for the remainder of the day. Record predictions against what actually occurs. After reading Four Seasons Make a Year, give groups of children a season and have them draw and label a picture that includes at least four elements pertaining to the season they were given. As the children speak, write and draw about the weather, check that they are using the proper vocabulary. After reading The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree, give each child a large piece of construction paper divided into four sections. Have the students draw a tree in each section reflecting the season. Students need to add at least three other items specific to their season. Check that the students understand the order of the seasons.

At the conclusion of each month, have the students copy the class weather graph. Then have the students write about the weather patterns they observed.
