WELCOME… to West Hollow Middle School

From the desk of the Principal Welcome to the West Hollow Middle School website.

Whether this is your first visit, or you have been a frequent user, I encourage you to explore our site and take advantage of all the resources that are available to you and your family. From accessing a teacher’s eBoard to viewing our broad range of extracurricular offerings, these serve as a few samplings of what you will find on this site.

Our website is a powerful tool towards furthering the educational goals of our students. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff.

Located on the western side of the Half Hollow Hills Central School District lies West Hollow Middle School.

Founded in 1970, this beautiful and unique building of approximately 1250 students stands as a beacon of learning for young adolescents within the community.

The West Hollow Middle School faculty is dedicated to providing a rigorous curricular program while ensuring that every child’s individual academic needs are being met.

In an effort to invite our newest students into a warm, vibrant and dynamic learning environment, our sixth grade students are housed in teams; in which our faculty is focused on having students realize their fullest potential.

Through embracing the teaming structure, students generate a greater sense of belonging while developing stronger relationships with their peers and teachers.

As students transition into grade seven and eight, they are provided a greater sense of independence. Once outside the team structure, students are expected to act with greater maturity and to handle their daily load of responsibilities.

Teachers will begin to expose students to a wide range of academically rich experiences; sought to enrich the well roundedness of our student body. Students will inevitably feel the passion our faculty has developed for their disciplines by relating their curriculum to “real world” situations, narrowing their academic focus, selecting a language and embracing the full offering of interscholastic sports.

At West Hollow, we strongly encourage parents to become involved with their child’s education and build partnerships with our faculty and school community. During the year, you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers at Back-to-School Night, evening conferences as well as maintaining contact various throughout the school year As we embark on the beginning of a new school year, I look forward to serving the community as the Principal of West Hollow Middle School. Placing our student’s needs first is, and will always be, our primary concern. By working together, there is nothing we cannot achieve!

Our Mission At West Hollow Middle School, our extracurricular activities supplement the academic program by providing a positive outlet for students to express themselves. We offer over twenty clubs and activities and hope to feed the creativity and fuel the passion for many of our students.

Boasting a strong WiFi Network through the school, students may now bring and utilize their own computing device at selected times throughout the school day.

Welcome to the MakerSpace!

The West Hollow Library includes two new areas; The MakerSpace and Tech Lounge.

The MakerSpace is an area were students can go to create, tinker and develop 21st Century technology skills. During lunch periods, students can work in the MakerSpace on cardboard creations inspired

by Caine's Arcade (http://cainesarcade.com/ ), use or take home a Makey Makey (http://www.makeymakey.com/ ) to transform any conductive material into keyboard functions, or learn the basics of coding; using Hummingbird/Arduino (http:/ www.hummingbirdkit.com/ ). The MakerSpace also has a wide range of electronics such as Little Bits (http://littlebits.cc/ ), LCD lights, batteries and conductive tape. These can be used independently or combined with a students' cardboard creations.

The Tech Lounge is located just outside the Library.

Here students, faculty, and staff may utilize their own devices or borrow a laptop from the Library.

Another popular choice is to challenge a friend to a game of chess.

The MakerSpace and Tech Lounge are aligned with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) initiatives, students develop several 21st Century skills such as creativity, trial and error, problem solving, perseverance and collaboration.
