Information literacy, the ability to find, analyze, manage, present and share information as well as the ability to adapt rapidly to the changes brought about by the availability of information, is a critical skill for 21st century citizens. Students need to become skilled in the use of the range of technology resources they will encounter. These skills will not come from special computer classes or from drill and practice computer use, but through the full integration of technology in their education. As 21st-century jobs become increasingly information based, workers need to: • use multimedia tools to communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing • separate the important, relevant information from the vast mountain of information available • quickly learn specialized information in an ongoing fashion • work effectively in physical and virtual groups The District’s philosophy of integrating technology into the instructional program reflects these issues. SMART Board Level 1 15 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 208 Date: Jan 15, 22, 29 and Feb 5 and 12 Time: 3:45PM to 6:45PM Instructor: Jolynn Sapia From the beginner to the novice, learn how to navigate through the basics of SMART Board, create your own files, find resources to avail yourself of, and begin to integrate this tool into your existing curriculum Advanced Prezi: Taking Your Prezi to the Next Level *Prerequisite 5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: Jan 8 and 15 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Jaclyn Tannazzo This workshop will continue to instruct participants from all content areas on the exciting and innovative presentation tool Prezi. Prezi is a web-based program that allows the user to create a non-linear presentation. Unlike other presentation programs, Prezi shows your audience how all the material connects and relates without the same repetitive “slides�. Prezi utilizes a spin and zoom tool to present the information. Your students will stay engaged during your entire presentation wondering where the screen will zoom and spin next. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to take their Prezis that they have created from the first PDP to the next level. This will include learning how to use screen blackout, 3D backgrounds, Fade-in animations, and grouping content so the information is presented clearly to the audience. *Prerequisite: Prezi: The Powerful Presentation Tool The iWork Classroom: Pages 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: January 10, 17 and 24 Time: 3:30 to 6:50PM Instructor: Kirk Strong Pages, will look to use this specific application to enhance the overall classroom experience for faculty, students and parents. Offering a wide range of options, the course will explore the creation of Newsletters, Posters, Brochures, etc. that will undoubtedly enhance the connectivity of your instruction program. Navigating District Subscriptions for Elementary Teacher Lesson Planning 5 hour PDP Location: Library at Sunquam Date: Jan 16 and Jan 23 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Kelly Connolly In this course, teachers will learn how to access, navigate and retrieve relevant information from the extensive Elementary BOCES Virtual Reference Collection (which includes World Book and CultureGrams) and previous district subscriptions (BrainPOP, TumbleBooks, and Learning.com). Teachers will be able to use these resources to support their grade level curriculum and lesson planning. Teachers will search and find specific materials and resources that support instructional goals. iMovie ’09 Basics – Ways to Engage 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 2 Date: January 17, 24, 31 Time: 3:45PM to 7:05PM Instructor: Diane Calise Have you ever wanted to create a movie to use in your curriculum? Perhaps, you would like to demonstrate techniques or procedures, or show students the proper way to conduct an interview, or show what after school activities are available at your school. In this class you will learn how to create your own original movies with easy-to-use iMovie software. Participants will learn how to plan and shoot video clips, create and edit background music, and put it all together into a movie that can supplement your classroom teaching. QR Codes 5 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 208 Date: January 23 and 30 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Jolynn Sapia Come learn the "QR code technology". Learn how to generate and utilize QR codes for your classroom. Bring a Smart device, (Phone or ipad), and see how you and your students can create QR codes which link to a website, video, voice recording, documents, contact information... The possibilities are endless.
eBoards – Home/School Connection 5 hour PDP Location: Vanderbilt Library Date: January 24 and 31 Time: 3:30PM to 6PM Instructor: Katherine Homenides This course will show teachers how to utilize their class eBoards to increase communication and collaboration as well as integrate technology into the classroom by posting links, photos, podcasts, streaming video, and other digital content. Participants will learn how to use their eBoards to create an interactive at-home project, based on an area of the curriculum that is learned in school. They will also learn how to utilize their eBoards to enhance their curriculum by building learning communities using iNotes and uploaded digital resources. Learning A-Z (Elementary and Middle School Special Education) 10 hour PDP Location: Signal Hill Library Date: January 26 and February 2 Time: 8AM to 1PM Instructor: Danielle Reed This is a wonderful online resource to support the language arts and science curriculum. Reading A to Z encourages independent and guided reading at all levels. This website offers lesson plans, leveled books, and developmentally appropriate comprehension & phonics worksheets. Raz-Kids provides access to hundreds of animated leveled books – ideal for emerging and challenged readers. This site offers interactive audio books and quizzes for students to utilize at school and at home. Vocabulary A to Z and Science A to Z also promote interactive learning and resources for students at teachers that correlate to curriculum guidelines. Participants will be given time to build rosters, assign books and learn how to track student reading activities. Succeed with turnitin.com (The class is for high school teachers) 5 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: January 31 and February 7 Time: 2:30PM to 5PM Instructor: Linda Lennon\Donna Miceli Learn all the nuances and fine points of turnitin.com, the award winning plagiarism database. We will show you how to utilize turnitin.com to make your students better researchers. Learn about Peermark, Grade Book and the Originality Check.
The iWork Classroom: Keynote 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: January 31 and February 7 and 14 Time: 3:30 to 6:50PM Instructor: Kirk Strong Keynote, will look to use this specific application to enhance the overall classroom experience for students. As a dynamic presentation tool, Keynote takes PowerPoint to the next level. Google Forms 5 hr PDP Location: Signal Hill Rm 204 Date: February 4 and 6 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Danielle Reed This course will provide an overview of Google documents and delve more specifically into creating Google forms. Teachers will discuss the applications of forms and brainstorm how they can best be utilized within their classroom. They will learn the types of responses available on a form, develop their own form(s), and analyze the information they gather from the resulting excel spreadsheet. The Wonderful World of Weebly 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 2 Date: February 5, 7, 12 and 26 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Jaclyn Tannazzo This course will provide participants of any content area and level with the opportunity to create a free website that can be used as a portfolio or communication tool. The Weebly allows a teacher or student, for free, to create a portfolio where artifacts can be collected and displayed including documents, videos, music, and photos. It can be used for classroom to parent & student communication and student to student communication as well. The course will provide participants with instructions on how to create the Weebly, add text, photos, music, surveys, embed videos and documents, as set up a blog. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to create their own Weebly and set up a Weebly for their students.
Photo Ops for Educators 1 7.5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 2 Date: February 5 and 12 Time: 3:30PM to 7:15PM Instructor: Bea Reiser With the use of digital photography, you can promote your class’s activities, highlight their work, publicize their creativity, create display cases, bulletin boards, and spruce up your eBoard. You will learn to add visuals to your PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, and Pages documents. You will have the ability to create slideshows quickly and easily for back to school night or for your classes. All of the things you learn are easily transferred to your students. Come and see how talented you can become! Information Literacy through VRC (Virtual Reference Collection) & OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Library Date: February 7, 14, 28 Time: 3:45PM to 7:05PM Instructor: Diane Calise Participants will experience and explore VRC (Virtual Reference Collection) and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). They will be expected to recognize which VRC databases would be useful for their curricular area(s) and design paths for their students to locate and choose for information. OPAC additionally has paths to explore for information literacy. Putting the T and E in STEM Education 5 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 208 Date: February 27 and March 6 Time: 3:45 to 6:15PM Instructor: Caryn Meirs Ways to integrate technology and engineering activities into your STEM lab time Activities and easy to do labs that will engage students in the STEM lab and coordinate with your science curriculum and the CCSS.
Pinterest for Teachers 5 hour PDP Location: Signal Hill Library Date: March 9 Time: 8AM to 1PM Instructor: Danielle Reed This course will introduce teachers to Pinterest.com and provide a brief overview of the site. Teachers will be able to set up accounts, follow educationally appropriate connections, and develop boards related to education, teaching, and common core standards. Teachers will also explore how to search, download, and modify resources to meet the needs of their students and classroom. Finally, teachers will learn how to pin ideas, upload documents, and share resources with others. Wikis, Websites and Blogs 5 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 208 Date: March 13 and 20 Time: 3:45 to 6:15PM Instructor: Caryn Meirs Classroom web tools way beyond e-boards Want to put your classroom newsletter up on the web? Have a photo gallery follow your kids through the year? See your students “chat” with each other about their bookgroups and other projects? We’ll discuss everything from basic first time startup to using templates for great backgrounds. Managing online communities and integrating flipping techniques into your classroom. You will learn to create a slideshow on your Dell classroom computer and on the Mac’s. You will create professional style documents on the Mac’s and present them in your classroom on the Dell. Programs will include: Pages, Keynote, Word, PowerPoint and Comic Life. You will also be able to store your documents on an external drive for future use. Prerequisite: Photo Ops for Educators 1 Getting Started With Animoto for Education 10 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Lab 1 Date: April 4, 11, 18 Time: 3:45PM to 7:05PM Instructor: Diane Calise "Unlimited Videos For Educators- Enhance your digital classroom with Animoto, an ideal tool for creating videos and presentations. It takes just minutes to create a video which can bring lessons to life." Participants with sign-up for a free educators account which can include students accounts. Participants will view different Animoto movies to get ideas for their very own creations. Learn to use a storyboard, gather clips, picture, choose transitions and background music. Exploring the Virtual Reference Collection 5 hour PDP Location: HS East Library/Mac Lab Date: April 20 Time: 8:00AM to 1:00PM Instructor: Linda Lennon\Donna Miceli Become proficient in accessing newspapers, periodicals and databases online utilizing the new Virtual Reference Collection available on our schools library media pages. Learn how students can use these resources to write research papers, create bibliographies and avoid plagiarism. Gain access to E-Prep, an online SAT prep program, to use in your classroom. Create an On-line Professional or Student Portfolio 5 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: May 11 Time: 8AM to 1PM Instructor: Becky Merejo Teachers will learn how to create a website that showcases their work, samples of students work, classroom, etc. Teachers will provide a sample for each of the domains per HHH portfolio requirements that incorporate 21 st century skills. Great for probationary and tenured teachers who wish to update their portfolios or have an online portfolio. Course can also help teachers create a model so that they can have students create online portfolios to showcase work done in your class. Using Brain Pop and TeachingBooks.net in Your Classroom 5 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: June 4 and 6 Time: 3:45PM to 6:15PM Instructor: Linda Lennon\Donna Miceli Whether you're new to TeachingBooks and Brain Pop or need a refresher, this course will give you the opportunity to review the basics. Participants will have the opportunity to create lesson plans and use these resources to differentiate your instruction and enhance student learning.
