P O R T F O L I O Landscape Architecture Zhou Wandi 2019-2021
Summary Of My Motivation Letter In my opinion, landscape architecture design is an essential means to improve the living environment for both human and animals by manipulating natural elements such as plants, water and soil. My parents’ work in water conservancy has given me many opportunities to observe natural sites, during which I have developed a concern for natural landscapes and the impact of human design on nature. In some places, human occupation of natural resources has caused damage to the ecological environment. I hope to contribute my power to improve this situation by exploring the balance between nature and people through landscape design from a symbiotic perspective. After nearly five years of study in the university, I have completed many projects , from small-scale architectural green spaces, medium-scale community parks to large-scale mountain scenic areas. This made me realize that landscape architecture is not just the manipulation of plants, but a very complex course that integrates environmental, social, historical and other elements. In my perception, the landscape architecture is formed by the conditions of the site, and ultimately affects the external environment in the opposite direction, existing as both a promoter and a witness of history. This dual nature of time and space fascinates me. Therefore, I hope that through deeper study, I can have a more comprehensive understanding of landscape architecture in various aspects. The professional course study since my junior year has strengthened my determination to study landscape architecture. I began to understand that the landscape can exist not only depending on the architecture , but also for a special group of people, or for a certain animal, or even for a certain kind of natural element. It is this abundance of possibilities that attracts me the most. For the hypothetical thesis project, I am interested in the restoration of abandoned dam landscapes. The number of idle or abandoned dams in China has remained high for the past decade. In the absence of manual maintenance, these dams are detrimental to both safety and ecology.Through the analysis of the hydrological conditions of the mountain surrounding area and the living conditions of the residents of the village at the foot of the mountain, I hope to propose a reasonable method to dismantle or reconstruct such dams for the purpose of restoring the ecological attributes of the mountain and the vitality of the riverside space.

01 Park Of Water And Bridge The project expects to provide a childfriendly community activity space for residents around the site while reviving the urban water culture. Starting from the four aspects of abundant functions, green space construction, cultural development, and traffic stabilization, it caters to the urban fertility policy and creates a living environment space suitable for city with a high-density of children .

Surrounding Conditions Of The Site
History And Culture Of The Site As a city along the Yangtze River, Nanjing is located in the area with the highest density of river networks in China. To a large extent, the history of civilization of this city is a history of flood control and utilization of water sources. But with the acceleration of urbanization, many historically famous rivers and their associated cultures have disappeared.

The traffic around the site is smooth and the traffic volume is large. while the land is mainly used for schools, residences and commerce, green space of the block is fragmented and seriously insufficient . The site is located in the overlapping area of the influence of the four schools. At the same time, it is on the most frequently used section of the road connecting the residential area and the school. Since 2005, the annual number of newborns and marriages in Nanjing has increased significantly. The number of school enrollment for young children has also increased. To cater to the needs of society, the block needs to propose relevant plans for the currently missing children's activity venues.

While the steel industry has brought prosperity to Ma'anshan City, it has also brought environmental problems such as dirty and chaotic River shoreline and many black and odorous water bodies. With the exit of illegal high-polluting companies along the river bank, the important role played by the site in the urban ecosystem and its superior geographical relationship with the city began to receive attention.

The site was originally an industrial gathering place. Therefore, the site soil contains a large amount of heavy metal substances. As the factory moved out, the topsoil was washed away by rainwater before re-greening, forming a large area of puddles. In the later period, the residents began to plant vegetables on the site. Limited by soil fertility, they carried out excessive and unplanned fertilizer application. Resulting in the polar distribution of the soil fertility of the site.

The viewing tower consists of a four-story viewing platform and is connected to the mountain plank road at the top. Located in the animal habitat protection area, surrounded by dense forest. Each floor of the viewing tower is visually guided by the walls, sometimes claustrophobic and sometimes opened. The stairs are arranged around the tower, and the hollow design between the steps emphasizes the connection between architecture and nature. The roof rotates relative to the direction of the floor, and is slightly raised towards the river, weakening the architectural sense of the viewing tower and adding a dimension of viewing direction.

With the northward relocation of the industrial center, a large number of vacant factories appeared in the village. In order to realize the transformation of villages in the post-e-commerce era, specific transformation methods are proposed from three aspects: ecology, economy and people's livelihood. Combined with the remaining problems of the accumulation of wood waste on the site, the vacant workshops are utilized and renovated, and new sustainable industries are placed. At the same time, the living space of local residents and migrant workers is optimized
