2019-20 SEASON
» Beethoven 250 » Music by Bach, Verdi, Copland, Stravinsky, Mozart, Higdon & more » Museum Concerts » Pops & Family Concerts » Handel’s Messiah » The Nutcracker Ballet
Dear Music Lovers, On behalf of the Longmont Symphony Orchestra, I’m delighted to welcome you to our 2019-20 Season: Music is Life! Each of our concert programs offers something unique for music lovers—whether it’s featuring artists with non-traditional solo instruments, as with Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto, or celebrating Beethoven’s 250th birthday with his “Eroica” Symphony and LSO’s first-ever performance of Beethoven’s Fourth at Longmont Museum’s Stewart Auditorium. Our season opens with a concert that draws connections to the incredible survival of Notre Dame Cathedral’s organ in Paris with two works for organ and orchestra by Parisian composers, including Camille Saint-Saëns’ epic “Organ Symphony.” As a fan of early music, I am thrilled that we are presenting Handel’s Messiah at Westview Presbyterian Church with our friends from the Longmont Chorale Singers. Also, our Chamber Orchestra performance at Stewart Auditorium in October
will include a 20th-century take on the music of the Italian Renaissance Period in a complete performance of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella. In February, we’ll feature the Longmont Youth Symphony playing side-by-side with your Longmont Symphony musicians in Respighi’s Pines of Rome, plus the great violinist Andrew Sords performing Corigliano’s Chaconne from The Red Violin. Another exciting part of our season is that, in addition to our presentation of The Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet, we’ve made our Gentle Nutcracker, designed for individuals with special needs and their families, into an annual event! This, combined with our robust outreach in schools, 5th Grade Concerts, and Family Concert— featuring the timeless classic Peter and the Wolf—shows how music can unite the entire spectrum of our community and touch people’s lives.

Longmont Symphony in the Community The Longmont Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit, community-based organization whose mission is to foster and promote the appreciation and understanding of symphonic music through performances and educational programs. The LSO is dedicated to providing opportunities for children, seniors, and underserved community to experience live orchestral music through our Education & Outreach Programs.
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL PROGRAM Members of the Longmont Symphony string quartet, brass quintet, percussion ensemble and woodwind quintet perform on a four-year rotation through the St. Vrain Valley Elementary Schools. These ensembles perform in over 28 schools yearly, reaching over 5,000 students in the 2nd-5th grade in an intimate chamber music setting.
ANNUAL 5TH GRADE CONCERT In January, the LSO performs two concerts at Vance Brand Civic Auditorium, reaching over 2,400 5th grade students in the St. Vrain Valley. For many students, this is their first experience hearing a live orchestra. Students are given the opportunity to ‘sit in’ with the orchestra during one of the pieces, and one student from the audience is chosen to conduct.
MENTORS IN MUSIC Longmont Symphony Orchestra musicians mentor middle school and high school instrumental music students. At the discretion of district music teachers, these musicians will be utilized as clinicians, in sectionals, and for individual or ensemble coaching.
ANDREW D. KELLER YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION This annual event is open to elementary through high school age students. The Young Artist Competition is an opportunity for talented young musicians to prepare a piece to performance level, to compete, and to receive constructive criticism from a panel of judges. Monetary awards are given to those students who place in their respective age categories and one winner is chosen to perform with the LSO at a future concert. Many past winners of this competition have gone on to professional performance and music education careers.
LONGMONT YOUTH SYMPHONY Longmont Youth Symphony and Longmont Youth Strings Ensemble are committed to serving the young musicians of the St. Vrain Valley and outlying areas of the community. The groups perform throughout the year and collaborate yearly with the Longmont Symphony.
SENIOR CONCERTS Members of the LSO string quartet, brass quintet, and woodwind quintet perform concerts yearly at various senior facilities throughout Longmont.
RAY PARNABY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND GARY DICKS PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by the Nancy L. Nixon Foundation, these scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded to a graduating high school senior who will be pursuing a music degree.
POP-UP CONCERTS Longmont Symphony ensembles can be heard at special events throughout the downtown area and in concerts at parks.
JULY 4TH SUMMER CONCERT Performed at Thompson Park in Longmont, this free community concert has become an annual family tradition. People of all ages and backgrounds attend this event in celebration of our nation and those who have served.
NUTCRACKER OUTREACH PERFORMANCE Hundreds of tickets for our final Nutcracker Ballet dress rehearsal are given to organizations serving the disabled, seniors and economicallydisadvantaged community members.
