The Essences of Jewelry inside the world of Hip-Hop Hip Hop main streamed in the mid 1900’s. It started out solely, as a way for artists, practically anyone to express themselves through lyrical adventure. Upon the lyrical adventures, individuals participated in acts of spray painting, formerly known to most as Graffiti. A new way to display art through paint, with words of wisdom or momentum as well as creative images to speak out to all types of audiences. Then there was also, break dancing and deejaying. Break dancing showed skills through body movement and each person who knew how to break dance had rhythm. Being able to move their body to the beats or motion of different songs. Whether the music played was techno, which they would probably move like a robot or some sort of movement in that category. Deejaying proves good knowledge of music. The knowledge of knowing how to mix or scratch different types of beats and elements together to create one brilliant ensemble. When it comes to Deejaying people like a person who can move their souls by providing the correct energy musically and or instrumentally. No matter what type of way people got involved in hip hop, the main ingredient to success is rhythm. For without some type of rhythm and meaning, it defeats the purpose of hip hop. When it comes to jewelry and the industry, there’s a lot to be said about a person’s character. Celebrities during early days of, used to wear large gold necklaces. Which were either roped or herringbone styled necklaces. Adidas were very much popular during that time period. So most artists would sport an Adidas jogging suit and sneakers, with one the selected two types of necklaces. Such an appearance flowed with their intended source of momentum. Most MC’s or rappers movement was to wave their hands from side to side, while having the same body movement as their hands. As their hands and body moved from side to side, so did there chains. The type of jewelry one chooses to wear depicts the image that individual wants to portray. There’s are certain artist who distinguishes himself from others by wearing a huge clock around his neck. Normally people wouldn’t think of wearing a clock around their neck because it’s extremely different. But this particular artist wanted to take jewelry to a new meaning. By him wearing such an object around his neck, he shows other’s that it’s okay to be different. Sometimes one has to change the repetition from person to person to develop his or her own reflection of life and character.

Females wore large gold earrings, mainly hooped. These large hooped earrings are known as door knockers because of their size. Some of the door knockers were kind of heavy on the ear, especially the real gold ones. Female musicians were seen wearing door knockers with short hairstyles. Big earrings completes the short hairstyles by bringing out the beauty of the hair cut. The hoops can either be triangular, circular, squared or even diamond shaped. These earrings were wore a lot with the earrings and mini shorts or as some would say daisy dukes. This was common for many other females in the industry. Gold was the most popular fad in the mid 1900’s. Now of days in today time, which is the 2000’s. The meaning of hip hop has changed a bit. There’s still the importance of having good flow with the music. But the industry is full of those who care a whole lot more about their image or reputation rather than just getting a good message out. Gold still plays a nice role. But, the demand for platinum and diamonds have increased. Rappers refer to their diamonds and mainly their platinum as ice. When a male artist shoots their video, there’s a couple things that must happen. First, their outfit has to be right. It has to match the theme of the video. If it’s a club or party inspired video shoot, than they would wear a nice pair of kicks, shirt, pair of jeans and fitted or they could dress a little fancier. Once again, it all depends on the mode of the video. Watches are very essential in the world of fame. Any watch that bling such as Rolexes, Bertoluccei, JoJino and many other watches that shine with platinum, are the primary choices. The way a watch, ring, earrings or chain shines, says the person has lots of money and care about his/her appearance. Also, that they handle their business when it comes to decision making. It’s all about swag, the way a person carries their self. Those who care about how they look, will dress to impress. While those who could care less about their fashion will dress any type of way. Beef is a great factor when it comes to being famous. Rivalry takes hold of many celebrities. In the world of fame enemies are formed constantly. This is why artist worry about the type of jewelry they wear. They want to rise above their enemy by presenting the finest things of life. If their accessories are on point, then the person hating on them might feel some type of way. It also shows of sense of authority. Even though the individual might be offended by who they’re warring with, having jewelry that make them glow, will show confidence. Then that person whose hating on them, might think the things they’re doing to bash the other person’s image has no effect. For men wearing a ring on his pinky finger or fourth finger is common. Grillz or mouth jewelry has become the way to go. A lot of rappers have a whole mouth full of platinum. Medallions on big chains is a favorable option for a tremendous amount of male artists. The bigger the chain or medallion, the bigger the message brought to others. Such message can be taken literal or even negative or positive. Clothes have been taken to another level because people are having platinum or diamonds added to their shirts, jackets and jeans to stand out more. Fairly drawing attention to their persona .Women celebrities also follow the same dialogue as the male musicians. Diamonds are said to be a girl’s best friend. If she have diamonds on her neck, finger, ears and wrists then she knows how to flow. Nothing is worse than having other artists talking about how broke the other person is or how he/she need to upgrade their appearance. 7|Page
When it comes to getting married in the music industry. The woman is supposed to have the best, biggest or most expensive ring. It’s really all about fame and glory. One has to have the best to succeed the best. Which that pertains strictly to this type of world. Living in the world of fame is similar than living a normal life. But the difference is the choice a person can make in the industry is limited. While the world that regular folks live is optional. Artists have to wear the best jewelry to match their clothes because they have an appearance to maintain. If their appearance goes than so does the fame. This is why their jewelry must be top notch because cheap accessories on a rapper means they’ve either hit rock bottom or in going bankrupted. Either way they have to stay high maintence. Fans expect their idols to live up to a certain expectation. When that expectation fails then fans are lost. The fans make the artist and the artist keep the fans. Men have so much expected of them. All artist live by the code. Money, Power, Fame. How many stacks you’re bringing to table, the level of skill you’re at and the finishing touch, which is fame. What people see you as in your role as an artist. All three complements one another. An artist can’t have one with other or they’re considered underrated. Underrated is a nice a way of saying, not on point, not up to the expectations of others.

The World of Hip Hop: History, Culture, Fashion, Jewelry and a Way of Life
The first known Hip Hop publication was entitled, “The Hip Hop Hit List,” which featured the very first rap music record chart. This historic magazine was published in the early 1980’s by two brothers from Newark, New Jersey, Vincent and Charles Carroll. The brothers were also partners in a Hip Hop group known as “The Nastee Boyz.” The Carrolls understood that Hip Hop was more than music and fashion, it was a way of life. They set out to chronicle the Hip Hop culture. There are many facets to the long and animated history of Hip Hop. The illustrious saga has more amazing information than could fit in ten leather bound volumes. For the sake of brevity, we will touch on the essentials and dream about the rest. Today many people think of rap music when they consider Hip Hop; but Hip Hop isn't just about the music; it's an entire culture, a way of thinking, a
language, bravura and a lifestyle perspective. Hip hop is music, dance, art and expression which manifests in fashion and jewelry. To quote KRS-One,
(Lawrence Krisna Parker ),"hip-hop is something you live, rap is something you do."
The language of Hip Hop needs to be appreciated. Terms such as “Emceein”
(rap), “breakin” (dancing), graffiti, (aerosol spray art), “deejayin,” (disc jockey),” beatboxin,” (vocal percussion) are part of the fundamental vernacular.
Hip-hop is believed to have originated in the Bronx by a Jamaican DJ named Kool Herc. DJ Herc's style of deejaying involved narrating rhymes over recorded 10 | P a g e
instrumentals. From DJ Herc’s home the movement spread across the entire borough and eventually, the world, affecting all cultures on a global scale. The initial version of deejaying transformed into emceeing—the rhythmic spoken technique of wordplay, delivered over a continuous beat. Breakdancing or “breaking” is a street-based dance that incorporates complex body movements, superior athletics, masterful coordination and rhythmic style. The people who perform this style of dance are known as b-boys or b-girls. Graffiti was originally a way of expressing underlying social and political struggles through the artistic expression of using spray paint in a public setting. Now graffiti is considered an art form and a multi-million dollar business. Walls decorated by the top graffiti artists are being ripped down and sold at auction. What once was criminal is now collectible. Fashion plays a big part of the Hip Hop culture and cannot be underestimated. In the late 1970s, established clothing brands, realizing that a trend was formulating, embraced the Hip Hop scene. A few of these were Kangol, Le Coq, Adidas, Sportif and Pro-Keds. Into the 1980s, stars of Hip Hop adopted flamboyantly colored name brand tracksuits, leather, sheepskin and Adidas Superstars, most commonly with “phat” or oversized shoelaces. Luxury logo brands started to become more important, such as Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Oversized eyeglasses and bucket hats by Kangol become fashion icons. Heavy gold jewelry, worn in many different configurations, such as nameplate
necklaces, copious chains, multiple rings and name belts for men and oversized gold door knocker earrings for women were universally worn to suggest wealth and status.
A thought provoking comparison is the House of Cartier of the 19th and 20th
century and todays fine Hip Hop jewelers. Founded in Paris, France in 1847 by
Louis-François Cartier, one of the most famous jewelers in the world is Cartier. King Edward VII of England referred to Cartier as "the jeweler of kings and the
11 | P a g e
king of jewelers." With a long and illustrious history of creating custom jewelry for royalty, celebrities and the world’s elite, the House of Cartier was the jeweler to the stars.
Today, a different style of modern royalty lives, works and plays around the world. While kings and queens of the past ordered tiaras from Cartier, todays elite order custom made Hip Hop styled jewelry from Brick City Gold, among other luxury modern jewelers. Some creative examples of Brick City Gold custom work are heavy gold rings for both men and women, diamond watches, necklaces, engagement rings and earrings. Truly exceptional are the fancy colored, custom made 3D “Iced Out” diamond pendants in extraordinary and unique shapes and motifs. Some fun and funky designs are Spiderman, Popeye, Big Mario and an incredibly detailed pair of headphones. The culture of Hip Hop continues to infiltrate all nations, crossing all boundaries, breaking down all borders. It is a lifestyle rich in creativity, imagination and vision.

Preparing for the Realities of Marriage By The Editor.
How ludicrous would it be for a person to hold a grand opening for a new business then leave for vacation the next day or go to a job interview without having read the job description? Equally absurd is the way many people get married each year without any knowledge of or preparation for the realities of marriage. Couples make elaborate wedding and honeymoon plans but none for a life together. Additionally, many are looking for spouses to marry without looking at their responsibilities in a marriage. Based on fairy tales spun by the media and pop culture, young women dream of finding their Prince Charming and living happily ever after. We think that once we are married, everything will just sort itself out. Some of us think that marriage is a solution or an escape or that our spouses will "complete us." Compounding this are values of mainstream society and their effect on the psyche of adolescents. Years of struggling with issues of dating and pre-marital sex in school as well as constant bombardment through films and television of unrealistic images of what love, sex and marriage are have affected our outlook on marriage and the opposite sex. So, when the time comes to get married, we often carry unrealistic expectations of what being married will be like and how our spouses will be. Many young people are not prepared for marriage and have not cultivated the skills to create a lasting relationship. While the American population has the world's highest divorce rate, 48.6 percent. Marriage here will end in divorce- not surprising considering we are living in a "divorce culture" where independence and individual happiness often comes first. When the marriage does not fulfill the individual's needs, the marriage is questioned. Terms such as "starter marriage" are becoming more common in the community as divorces among newlywed couples, after only months of being married, increase. Furthermore, couples in multicultural marriages are experiencing complex issues because of their background differences and often find little support from their families and communities because of certain cultural ideas about marriage. These couples often become resigned to ending the marriage. Newlyweds sometimes don't readily acknowledge that they must work on the marriage for it to survive. Many divorce when marriage is not what they expected or harder than they imagined. Divorce is now considered a plausible option among young people, unlike the generation before them. Now, more than ever, we should prepare ourselves and our children for the realities of marriage. Preparing for marriage is as important as having an accurate road map before driving cross country. Preparing for marriage is more than searching for a spouse; it begins with discovering who you are as a person.
