FINAL TEST FOR JOUBERT AND PESKIN IN 2010 Words: Evan Rothman Picture: Evan Rothman Only 200kms of special stages lie in wait for SASOL South African National Rally Championship competitors this weekend as they tackle the final round of the season, the Toyota Dealer Rally Gauteng. Salom Group Volkswagen Polo Class S2000 crew of Theuns Joubert and Carl Peskin have proven themselves to be the fastest Volkswagen Polo privateers in 2010, and with steady progress and increased speed this crew look to finish inside the top ten on Saturday evening as the champagne bottles are uncorked. At the previous round of the eight-event series in Cape Town for the Swartland Rally, Joubert/Peskin’s event started off under problematic

circumstances. In the Shakedown Stage for the event the day before, their Polo’s gearbox failed and had to be repaired overnight. As the dust settled for the end of the first stage, however, the nerves within their rally car had settled and the adrenalin focused them on the job at hand. The Mokopane-based businessman powered his Polo S2000 through the remainder of Day One’s stages and then settled into a quick rhythm on Day Two’s six stages to record a strong 12th place finish. Gaining more tarmac experience on the Killarney Motorsport Complex’s high-speed circuit, Joubert and Peskin are both eager to start this weekend’s event with their added confidence over the event’s numerous tarmac speed tests.

The Toyota Dealer Rally Gauteng kicks off on Friday at 13h00 at the Gerotek Vehicle Test Facility west of Pretoria. Here competitors will face four stages before heading to the Swartkops Raceway track for five-laps of the 4km circuit to end the day. Day Two starts at 07h30 at the Rallystar facility on the R51 road to Benoni. In this area, crews will challenge themselves and the timekeepers’ stopwatches over a further seven stages that will bring them to the finish line at the Rallystar facility to end the 2010 SASOL South African National H&H Rally Championship.

DETOTA CROWNED 2WD CHAMP IN 2010 USRC Words: Staff Writer Pictures: Ryan Connary, Bill Rogers Motorsport Memories, Lorne Trezise, Steve Harrell Erika Detota along with navigator and coach, Jason Smith had another podium finish in 2WD and placed sixth overall at the Prescott Rally, 01 - 02 October, in Prescott, Arizona. This win secured this crew the National 2WD United States Rally Championship titles. Detota is excited to be a part of a handful of women drivers to win rally titles. “I hope to inspire other women and girls to be involved in sports and racing.” The Prescott Rally is known for picturesque long stages with a mixture of fast, flowing terrain, varying surface conditions and some of the most extreme drop-offs in the series. “The stages were fantastic, but mentally challenging: these are the longest and

most difficult stages I have ever run,” said Erika. “We ran two of Friday’s night stages along really dangerous sections of the road, and the dust made it so hard to see that we could only use low beams.” In addition to a Championship win and podium finish, the team also received the Carl Merrill Sportsmanship Award. The memorial award is in remembrance of the accomplished and beloved rally driver who tragically passed at Prescott Rally 12 years ago and is given annually to the team who best embodies the spirit of the past champion. The honour is “beyond words” said the team “and is truly a special accomplishment for us to continue Merrill’s legacy.” The 2010 season, Detota’s first as a driver, proved to be an “unqualified success” said Smith, himself an accomplished driver. “It has been a pleasure to watch Erika grow as a driver.”

USRC is unique by offering events in two regions with a championship rally allowing Atlantic and Pacific teams to compete for titles. Detota and Smith participated in the Atlantic Division where they raced on three surfaces this year. From ice, tarmac to gravel this team showed strength in quickly adapting to diversity of terrain for an impressive first year. Erika and Jason would like to congratulate their fellow champions in the 2010 USRC season and thank their supporters and sponsors. Broken Motorsports for helping to maintain and build their car as well as providing much needed crew support; Robert Cella for his generous investment in the team. Big Boulder Park, RallyArmor, Team O’Neil and Keep A Breast Foundation for their H&H continued support.

BREEN SECURES SECOND PLACE IN ITRC 2010 Words: Staff Writer Picture: www.rallyprint.com 18 special stages, torrential rain, intercom woes and seven fastest stage times for Breen as “20” servers up a corker in the “Rebel County”. As Craig Breen drives onto the finish ramp outside the Silversprings Hotel headquarters of the Cork 20 International Rally last Sunday afternoon, the Waterford driver claims his third podium of the year, finishes third overall and secures second overall in the Citroen Irish Tarmac Championship. The happiness was easy to be seen as Craig exited the car and his smile underlined the joy as he end the season on a high. “The unreal conditions yesterday with torrential downpours, really tough stages and stiff competition made this one of the hardest event of the year but to finish third overall and claim second in the tarmac championship is great. We had some problem with the intercom in the car yesterday morning but to set six fastest stage times shows we were on the pace and is very pleasing. Today we bedded in over the opening stage and I then had a good run over “Fuhiry”. It’s a great stage and I could remember making gravel notes for Dad when he was competing, after that point we just consolidated our position, I wanted to finish the year

in a good way taking second overall in the championship on my first attempt is great.” Day One of the final event of the ITC season was made up of three loops of four stages, all based around the town of Millstreet in North County Cork. As the cars were about to start the opening “Mullaghanish 1” stage the weather turned nasty as the forecasted heavy rain started to fall. Craig slotted in at sixth with a time of 08min 58.0s, 20.6sec down on stage winner Aaron MacHale. At the end of the test the Fiesta S2000 driver reported a half spin and felt that he couldn’t really commit on the wet roads. On SS2 Craig suffered from intercom problems and dropped about thirty seconds as Tim McNulty took over the top spot. McNulty then set the pace again on stage three “Mushera 1” but Craig was less than 02sec away and this with his windscreen misting up through the test as the torrential rain continued to fall. As the crews entered first service in Macroom, Craig reported, “My only clean run on that loop was on stage four, the weather is just unreal.” Craig did get into the groove on that fourth stage and with that clean run he posted his first fastest time of the weekend. At that point Craig was placed sixth and of the four contenders that could claim the title he was third. The fastest time on stage four

lifted Craig’s confidence and two more quickly follow on stages five and six and a hat trick of fastest times on stages eight, nine and ten as Craig ended the day in third overall. Day Two was made up of a double loop of three stages with service again in Macroom. Craig pushed over the first run of “Fuhiry” where he collected his seventh fastest stage time of the weekend. In service the twenty year old showed his maturity as he stated during an interview: “I enjoyed my run over Fairy. I could remember making gravel notes for my Dad when he was competing and the second half of the stage really flows, but from here on my main objective is to consolidate my second place. This is exactly what transpired as over the final stages the Kick Energy Fiesta slotted in at third as Craig left the front two of Gareth MacHale and Tim McNulty fought it out for the win.” Now with this result under his belt Craig will concentrate on the British Pirelli Star Driver Shootout final which is scheduled for the end of the month. The British final will take place in the Sweet Lamb Complex in mid-Wales and the drivers in the final will use a Subaru N15. After that Final Craig will travel to Spain for the Pirelli Star Driver Global Final Shootout where the R2 Fiesta will H&H be his mount as he bids for glory.

TOUGH ROUTE FOR NEW OFF-ROAD RACE Words: Staff Writer Picture: Motorpics There is a surprise in store for competitors on the Human Auto 400, round seven of the Absa Off Road Championship, on 23 - 23 October. The event is a new one on the Absa calendar and sees mainstream national championship motorsport return to the Free State. Race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service point will all be located at the Windmill Casino complex on the outskirts of Bloemfontein. “There are a few surprises in store for competitors,” said race director Adri Roets. “The popular perception is that the Free State is flat and boring”, and that the route for an off road race through the province would be flat and boring. “That perception is going to rapidly change once crews tackle what

is going to be an interesting and very demanding route.” Roets added competitors would be faced with some challenging koppies along with undulating and varying terrain. There would also be some rocky and sandy sections with crew being made to work hard for good results. Roets also praised the hard work done by a local route survey team in Andre Botha, David White and Robbie Theuns. White has in recent seasons been a leading competitor in Class P of the Absa Off Road Championship. “We have also had terrific cooperation from local government and from farmers and landowners,” said Roets.” There is an air of anticipation about the race and it is a talking point wherever you go in the Free State.” The Donaldson Prologue on 22 October will start at 12h00 from the Windmill Casino and will run north via the old Brandkop race track to the

popular Stuck in the Mud resort and the De Brug army base. Total distance for the prologue is 60 kilometres. The race route will be approximately 190km in length, with competitors to complete two loops, and for the first 60km will follow the prologue course with sections in and around De Brug. The route will then run alongside the N8 towards Kimberley before switching direction towards Petrusburg and Jagersfontein. The final section will see the route cross the R706 and head back towards the Windmill Casino complex. Enthusiasts will also be well catered for and the route will be spectator friendly with numerous vantage points along the route. The race will start at 08h30 on October 23 and public entrance to the start/finish, the designated service point and spectator viewing points will all be H&H free of charge.

DANCE TO TIPPERARY: IRISH MUSIC AND RALLYING Words: Evan Rothman Irish band Dance to Tipperary have swept music’s best-selling lists for over a decade with their unique sound and style. Their foresight to embrace the digital music landscape has boosted their popularity not only in Ireland but in the United Kingdom too, and has moved their music into new segments while allowing the powerful and iconic Dance To Tipperary sound to shine through. Sport, and rallying in particular, has been a tremendous marketing tool for Dance To Tipperary launching their music to new fans. In 2007 when the World Rally Championship visited Ireland for the first time, Dance To Tipperary recorded the hit single “Its Rally Ireland Time.” This track went on to become a number one best seller in Ireland and across the waters too. Dance To Tipperary started in London in 1998 in the UK dance scene, and they brought dance beats to Irish music. This was in the heat of the world’s Riverdance love affair, and Dance To Tipperary released their first album in 1999 to acclaim from music lovers. The band also dedicated a song

and music video in December 2001 to Emma, Mark and Bertie Fisher called “Great Moments with You” and have further entrenched their connections with rallying and its loyal supporters. Emma, Mark and Bertie were tragically lost to the world in a helicopter crash. For the band this single marked their seventh chart-topping single in a row. Daniel Barry and Martin Brady (Barry Motorsports Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX) have for 2010 entered selected rounds of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge series and will this weekend be tackling the testing stages of the IRC Rally of Scotland. Stickered up in Dance To Tipperary colours and logos, this Irish rally crew will be aiming for a top result. The band has supported this exciting rally team throughout 2010, and for this rally new logos will be seen on the car to celebrate the band’s more than ten years at the forefront of the music scene. Their new studio album, “Return To Me”, was released on 01 March 2010, and it features 11 new tracks from the band including the singles “Outta My Head”, “What Kind Of World Would This World Be” written by acclaimed American songwriter Diane Warren and the epic

title track “Return To Me”, as well as the Dance To Tipperary party influenced fare such as “Drink, Drink, Drink” and “Hungry”. The second single “I’m Sorry” from the new album will be released on 19 November. More than a decade on Dance To Tipperary the Irish music hit continues. To celebrate this Irish band and their rally commitment, HANDBRAKES & HAIRPINS have teamed up with Dance To Tipperary to offer a fantastic compeition to readers of H&H. The prizes are: 3 t-shirts of your choice off the band’s merchandise website and 10 free downloads of their new single “I’m Sorry” to lucky readers. To win you will need to correctly answer the following question and send to evan.hhmag@gmail.com: Which Irish VJ created the graphics for the video of “I’m Sorry”? (HINT: The answer will be found on the YouTube video biography). The link to their YouTube channel is: http://www.youtube.com/user/dancetotipperary

SAAREMA RALLY ENDS BALTIC RALLY SEASON Words: Liga Stirna Pictures: Janis Barbars (rallyemotions.lv) The Saaremaa Rally is like a very beautiful yet strict princess: only the serious, brave and smart knights (read: drivers) may have her grace and love. She hates vanity and punishes daring; so many crashes in Saaremaa Rally, you won’t see in any this many in other rallies in the Baltics... But, when you get her favour (read: finish these fantastic, fast stages) you are the most happy person in the (rallying) world! The Saaremaa Rally is one of the oldest in this region, and this year it celebrated its 43rd edition. After the collapse of USSR, when Estonia received independence, this event held on the Estonian island of Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea became open up for all drivers

around the country. Because of these beautiful scenes, hard and fast yet tricky roads and fact that this is the very last rally of the season, the Saaremaa event is a highly popular one and organisers always reach their 150-car entry list. Saaremaa Rally also is very democratic: here you can see all types of cars you just can imagine. From the latest S2000, Evo X and WRC to exotic Talbot TI 1,6, Ford Escort Mexico or the old Soviet trucks GAZ. Typical of the Saaremaa Rally are short stages, except one - Undva: 22km of twisty, narrow roads through junipers at the beginning and fast, flowing sections along the seashore towards the end. For this year, however, this stage wasn’t included in the event as didn’t fit in with the itinerary and organizers pkanned to include new stages. Drivers had to tackle 14 stages,

few of them new for most of the competitors. If you look at the event’s timetable, you might be surprised by stage lengths: 5.8km, 10km, and the logest at 14 km. But do not judge from these numbers: that short (5,8 km) stage claimed more than 20 “victims”! Lately a number of internationally known drivers and rising stars have participated in the Saaremaa Rally. We have seen winners on past events such as Anton Allen, Andreas Mikkelsen, Ott Tänak (who was actually born on this island) and Juho Hanninen. This year we all expected a battle between Norwegian star Mads Ostberg (Subaru Impreza WRC) and another WRC driver Estonian Georg Gross (Ford Focus WRC) and, of course, young Ott Tänak who piloted a Ford Fiesta S2000 for this rally. Mads Ostberg won all but two stages – in very first one fastest was

Georg Gross and in city superspecial was won by Ott Tänak. Stage after stage, second by second, Ostberg built his lead and after SS14 it was almost one and half minutes over second place finisher Gross who won this position after a fight with Ott Tänak. They were separated by just 10 seconds at the finish. Tänak was third overall, but with certainty won Class N4. Because of these short stages, battles were intense in all the classes, for every place in the overall standings but most dramatic was in Class N4. Just 0,7sec separated the bottom step of podium from fourth place and third was won by experienced Estonian Priit Saluri as he defeated young Lithuanian Dominikas Butvilas. 07sec further back was the fastest of the Latvian drivers, Jānis Feldmanis. The very international podiums

saw this rally, for example, Class E12 winner was Lituanian Rokas Lipeķis (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII), second place went to Latvia with Aivars Bērziņš (Mitsubishi Lancer Evi VI), but third was Finn Sami Valme (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI). The 43rd Saaremaa Rally was as hard as ever, and thick fog in the morning stages didn’t ease the difficult going either. But it is in exactly such conditions that you can see who believes his in his pacenotes and co-driver and who does not. The specific character of these stages also demands very quick reactions – on the second pass through the stages, quite deep ruts was formed inside the corners and they acted as unexpected jumps: that’s why so many cars were scattered off the road and in the bushes. From 146 cars that started this rally, 60 retired but those

who managed to the finish every crew may be proud for themselves and for their cars. The princess has chosen her knights and awarded them with the fantastic feeling of gratification of a good job completed. Actually, an exploit! H&H OVERALL CLASSIFICATION 01) M. Østberg/J. LAST GASP FOR GEMMELL FOR TITLE HOPES IN 2010 Words: Staff Writer Pictures: Evan Rothman Johnny Gemmell’s first rally championship is in the hands of his only rival Enzo Kuun. Gemmell must win the final round of the Sasol South African Rally Championship, while Kuun can cruise around to a lowly 17th place overall and take his second crown without even breaking into a sweat. The Toyota Dealer Rally Gauteng will see either the Castrol Toyota or BP Volkswagen driver take the title. A tie at the head of the leaderboard will ensure that Kuun, the 2006 champion, takes his second title on a count-back to second place finishes. Should Kuun’s usually bullet proof Volkswagen Polo S2000 fail to finish, which has happened once this year, Gemmell still has to win: second place is simply not an option. Kuun’s title bid has been remarkable; three wins and three second place finishes (with a single non-finish on the Rally of South Africa) from seven starts has earned the pair 138 points. By contrast, Gemmell’s Castrol Toyota Auris started the year in KwaZulu-Natal on its side, while punctures and a seemingly incurable misfire robbing the crew of other winning opportunities. A mid-season burst of two back-to-back wins on the Rally of South Africa and the Volkswagen Rally put Gemmell back in contention. The latest outing on the Swartland Rally saw the Toyota finish eighth while Kuun swept to a comfortable victory. There is a new format for the 2010 Toyota Gauteng Rally: Day One is run entirely on tarmac, meaning the scenario for the Japanese brand gets worse as other possible victors come into play. Crews such as Charl Wilken/Greg Godrich (Basil Read/bizhub Ford Fiesta S2000), Conrad Rautenbach/Peter Marsh (Ford Fiesta S2000), Leeroy Poulter/ Robert Paisley (Castrol Team Toyota

Auris S2000). Hein Lategan/Johan van der Merwe (Pirtek/Sasol Toyota Auris S2000), Japie van Niekerk/Robin Houghton (New Africa Developments/ CTrack Toyota Auris S2000) and J-P. Damseaux/Carolyn Swan (Team Total Toyota RunX S2000) will be vying for a podium spot too. The 2010 Class A7 Champions Gugu Zulu/Cindi Harding (BP Ultimate Volkswagen Polo A7) are hoping their car will last the route after catching fire last time out, adding to the pairing’s two class wins. Gavin Cronje and 2010 class A6 Co-Driver Champion Henry Dearlove (Easylife Kitchens Faerie Glen VW Polo A7) have endured a horrid year, with just two finishes on their scorecard. With the Class A6 title in Leeroy Poulter’s cupboard, the 1600cc fight will revolve around Craig Trott/Robbie Coetzee (Team Total Toyota RunX A6) and Ashley Haigh-Smith/Hilton Auffrey (React Toyota Corolla A6), who are locked in a winner-takes-all fight for the 1600cc Championship. Irrespective of their finishing positions, whoever finishes ahead of the other, wins the title. HaighSmith, just 18 years and 2 months old and preparing for his matric final exams, clinched the Class A5 Championship on the Osram Rally after dominating the season. Class A5 should see another dominant performance from the young Port Elizabeth-based Morne Janse van Rensburg/Derek Jacobs (GC Diesel/ BP Volkswagen Polo Vivo A5). Anyone running a CitiGolf will be left in their wake, such is the new entry-level rally weapon’s superiority. Piet Bakkes/Paul van Wyk (Sasol Komatipoort VW CitiGolf A5) will try as hard as he can to get the upper hand and road conditions could play into the veteran’s hands. The new class N4 champions, brothers Joos/Danie Stassen (Topgear Motors Subaru Impreza STI N4) should have things their own way as they push for a fourth class win of the year. The Class N3 driver’s title is still

looking for a home. Zimbabwean Robson Maganezi (Linking Africa Ford Fiesta ST N3) leads Megan Verlaque (Toyota RunX N3) by two points. The class co-driver’s title belongs to Megan’s brother Oliver Verlaque. The Verlaque siblings have won three of their last four outings, and the biggest threat should come from the Namibian pairing of Stefanie and father Willem Hugo in their Wiel Tydskrif Toyota RunX N3. The Namibian driver claimed her maiden class win on the Volkswagen Rally in July. The PMC–run Toyota Dealer Rally is also the seventh and penultimate round of the Northern Regions Rally Championship, so motorsport fans have a double dose of action to look forward to. The Toyota Dealer Rally Gauteng starts at 13h00 at the Gerotek Vehicle Testing facility west of Pretoria and comprises four stages, including two runs on the infamous Hillclimb stage, which features dramatic changes in elevation and two passes over the vehicle dynamic handling track. The second run of each stage will be in the reverse direction. The crews then head to Zwartkops Raceway for five laps of a 4km long stage that incorporates much of the original track around the old drive-in theatre. Saturday’s seven stages of high-speed action gets underway at 07h30 from Rallystar on the R51 road to Benoni. The first stage is the Rallystar stage which finishes in the motorsport complex, followed by Frik 1 across the road. The Rallystar Superspecial follows – now 5.5km in length, after which teams tackle Tweefontein on the R25, and a repeat of the Rallystar stage, before taking on Frik 2. The season’s grand finale is another run over the Superspecial stage. All stages offer easily accessible, excellent spectating for H&H the fans.

SCOTTISH TEST AWAITS IRC Words: Staff Writer Pictures: IRC Series Competitors in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) have negotiated a wide variety of terrain this season. From the ice-coated passes in the mountains above Monte Carlo to the rock-strewn gravel roads of Argentina, the battle for glory has been demanding and intense in equal measure with seven different drivers triumphing on the 10 events held so far. RACMSA Rally of Scotland is the next stop on this thrilling global adventure and the prospects for an epic encounter are mouth-watering with more than 10 pacesetting S2000 cars in action on the high-speed gravel forest roads around the event’s base in Perth in the centre of the country. Billed as the best in the world by leading competitors who took part on the inaugural Rally of Scotland in November 2009, the stages run through closed forest roads in the counties of Perth and Kinross and Stirlingshire and provide a huge challenge for the drivers. Blind crests, climbs and descents, sharp drops, tight junctions, off-camber corners and tree-lined straights all feature on the competitive route, which covers almost 200 kilometres over 12 stages and is likely to be subjected to changeable weather conditions. However, the opening two tests on the night of Friday 15 October are somewhat tamer by comparison. Based in the grounds of Scone Palace, the historical home of the Stone of Destiny, the stone that kings and queens of Scotland were crowned upon, the stage, which is run twice in quick succession, is made up of a mixture of asphalt and gravel sections over a distance of 3.37km. It will give fans the chance to see rally cars in action in close proximity to Perth. Because the stage has more than doubled in length since 2009, it could have a greater bearing on the final classification this year. Following a short early morning service halt at Perth Airport, the real action begins with three stages located

north-west of Perth on Saturday 16 October. They are each run twice and include two runs through the 17.68km Errochty stage, which will be shown live on Eurosport. The stage climbs over Cragan Liath Mor through Tummel Forest and emerges by the shores of Loch Tummel. It begins with several twisty corners and hairpins before a very fast and flowing blast over the hill top. Punctures are a possibility in this stage due to the extensive logging work that takes place in the area. Sunday’s action is contained in the Lomond and Trossachs National Park south-west of Perth and begins with a new stage, Clashmore, which replaces Achray following recent access restrictions. The start is narrow and peppered with off-camber corners before it joins a new forest road, which takes in part of the infamous Loch Ard stage. With the final two-thirds of Clashmore using ultra-fast roads, drivers will need to be extremely brave and committed in order to set rapid times. The rally concludes with the second of two runs through the Loch Ard Forest. The stage, which has been tweaked slightly for 2010 to include a new loop, is a mixture of flat-out sections over crests and tight hairpins. At 29.04km in length, it’s the longest of the rally. With the stage set to decide the outcome of the rally, viewers of Eurosport, who will be able to watch both runs live, will get the opportunity to witness all the drama unfold as it happens. As well as counting as a round of the main IRC, Rally of Scotland will mark the 11th event of the season for the IRC 2WD Cup for crews in two-wheel drive machinery. Rally of Scotland marks the fifth time this year that the Colin McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy will be presented. The award is handed to the most spectacular driver who best embodies the spirit of the Scottish hero and rallying legend on rounds of the IRC. Its recipient is chosen by a panel consisting of IRC’s Motorsport Development Manager Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Gilbert Roy, the Director of Editorial and Programme Development at

Eurosport Events, and Jim McRae, Colin’s father. Despite Juho Hanninen’s second place finish on the last IRC round in Sanremo, Italy, in late September, the Finn hadn’t quite done enough to put the drivers’ title beyond the reach of his Skoda Motorsport team-mate Jan Kopecky. Providing he won the last two events in Scotland and Cyprus and Hanninen faltered then he could be champion. However, with Skoda sending a single Fabia S2000 Facelift to Scotland for Hanninen, it means the 29-year-old will compete to officially win the 2010 IRC drivers’ title. Although Rally of Scotland will effectively become a high-speed lap of honour for the gifted Hanninen, he will be determined to show his pace on his favoured surface and add to his impressive wins in Argentina and Sardinia alongside co-driver Mikko Markkula.
