Creating an Excel Spreadsheet – Excel 2010 Scenario: You are visiting Knoebels Amusement Park in Pennsylvania. You need to purchase ride tickets to go on the rides. The goal is to go on each thrill ride at least once. How many tickets will you need? Information you need in worksheet: The thrill ride names and costs Let’s get started. Step 1: Open Excel Program Figure 1

Step 2: Start entering the title and data needed to determine the final cost for riding every thrill ride in Knoebels Amusement Park one time. The information needed is listed in Figure 1 at the left. Please type the information in the cells indicated. ! ! ! !

Start by typing the title in cell A1 Move to cell A1 Type: Rides and Prices Press Enter key (this will move you to cell A2)

! To key the first column heading, move to cell A3 ! Type: Ride Name ! Press the right arrow key (or click mouse) to move to cell B3 ! In cell B3 ! Type: Price ! Click cell A4 ! Type: Stratos Fear press right arrow and type 2.00 **notice that the ride name is longer than the column row **notice that only the 2 shows in the price column We will keep the 2 as it is for now and change the format of our worksheet for currency later. Until then, let’s change the column width of column A so that the ride name fits.

How to widen a column:

1. Place the mouse pointer on the line between columns A and B in the column header. 2. The pointer will change to a double - headed arrow. 3. Double click with the left mouse button. The column will automatically widen to match the longest entry in that column. (or click and hold left mouse button while dragging to widen to your desired width and release mouse button).


! Widen Column A to fit all ride names. ! Continue keying the rest of the information as indicated in Figure 1.

Determine the total cost for the rides To determine the total cost for the rides we will need to add all of the totals together. We can use the AutoSum Function to help us.

! Move to cell A25 and type: Total ! Move to cell B25 and click on the AutoSum button (or shortcut Alt + =) ! Press Enter


The answer should appear in cell B25

Format for Currency

! Highlight range B4 down to B25 (click left mouse button and drag to choose range) ! Click the currency symbol in the number area ! Prices should now be in currency


Save Worksheet

! Choose the File Tab ! Choose Save As

! Open and choose the Document folder ! Type Rides as the file name ! Click the Save button
