introduction

When HI Arts published the first edition of this Guide in 1999, Professor Duncan MacMillan wrote in the Introduction that it was ‘not just a useful tool’ but also ‘a celebration’. And there was indeed much to celebrate in that first comprehensive overview of the many individuals and organisations who promote and present the Visual Arts throughout the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. At least, that seems to have been the view both of those featured in the Guide, and of the many visitors who have made use of the 35,000 copies which were distributed over the last two years. Feedback, through the evaluation form enclosed with the Guide, showed that users rated it very highly for its usefulness and clear layout. Moreover, they often used the Guide to visit as many as ten different galleries on a single trip. In the intervening years, HI Arts has continued to assist the Visual Arts by setting up a major project which is providing high quality marketing advice and support to Highlands and Islands galleries. Like this Guide, that project is being funded both by the Scottish Arts Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. In that time, too, there have been further major gallery developments, most notably the doubling in size of Taigh Chearsabhagh in North Uist, and the establishment of the first dedicated arts venue in mainland Argyll, at An Tairbeart. By the time a third edition is required, we may also be able to salute a major redevelopment of the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney. As it is, this second edition includes 34 more entries than the first. Some of those were missed first time round, but many have opened up just in the last two years. 105b

HI Arts has been asked why this Guide concentrates on the Visual Arts, and does not include crafts. The primary reason is that, to do so, this would have to be a very different publication. Not only would it have to be more than twice as large (making it impossible to give away free of charge), but, to really benefit the crafts sector, it would also have to act more as a catalogue of work available, rather than a guide to places to visit. But, of course, the Highlands and Islands play host to many crafts businesses of the highest quality, and HI Arts will be working with the Scottish Arts Council, and other agencies, to ensure that suitable efforts continue to be made to promote the crafts. Details of some current sources of information are given at the back of this Guide. Robert Livingston, Director Highlands & Islands Arts Ltd (HI Arts)

about the guide

The Highlands and Islands Visual Arts Guide has been compiled by Marcus Wilson, Visual Arts Marketing Coordinator with HI Arts, with funding from Highlands & Islands Enterprise, HI Arts and the Scottish Arts Council. For ease of use, entries have been grouped into Local Enterprise Company areas, as detailed below and displayed on the adjoining map. The entries are in two sequences leading from south to north, assuming a starting point on either the West or East coasts. Every effort has been made to ensure that the Guide is as comprehensive and accurate as possible. Nonetheless, some details will change over time, and it may often be useful to phone or e-mail in advance to check the opening times and other arrangements of an individual gallery. Up to date information, as well as information on exhibitions, can also be acquired from the HI Arts website at www.hi-arts.org.uk. All entries in the Guide have a free admission policy except where stated.

key to symbols

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland have a long and distinct cultural history, which is often reflected in the work made by artists based in the area. The prevalence of Gaelic names throughout the Guide also reflects a growing interest in and awareness of the language and its related traditions. Similarly, in the North many artists and galleries display aspects of Norse linguistic and cultural traditions.
