WHAT IS VINTAGE MODERN?
The term “modern” (also commonly known as “Mid-Century Modern”) describes mid20th century modern designs dating from the 1930s-1960s. Modern furniture styles are classic and understated, and embrace clean, uncluttered, sleek lines based on the principle that form should follow function. Black and white colors are often used for stark contrasts and for making bold statements.
There is no clear cut definition of vintage modern. It is up to each individual to decide the true meaning based on their own personal preferences. Mixing and matching old styles with new is a fun and nostalgic way to create an eclectic look for any room in your home. HFM
There are certain elements that are found in many vintage modern designs, and patina plays a large role. So do color palettes. Repurposing industrial pieces is another way to mix these different elements together and achieve a vintage modern balance. Old metal wire baskets hung on an aged brick wall with a fresh crisp coat of white paint behind it to modernize the look also creates this style. Iconic vintage statement pieces such as an old metal hospital cabinet with glass doors used for storing dishes, then paired with a modern table and chairs in a dining room with spacious windows that expose natural light … this would also constitute as a vintage modern design.
COURTESY OF RF MODERN BY REFLECTIONS
Vintage modern furniture designs have increased in popularity over the years. But what
does vintage modern really mean? To put it simply, it is a mixture of combining old pieces with new ones. Whether it be freshening up old furniture with new fabric and a coat of paint, or pairing an old wooden farm table with a modern piece of artwork and copper aged pendant lights together in the same room, vintage modern is extremely versatile.

If we go back to the origin of “vintage,” you will see that the word derives from either cars or wine. Vintage wine refers to wine that is made from grapes that are picked in a specific season. With vintage cars, it means a car that is at least 20 years old. But in every case, the term vintage is very definitive about the time period being referenced, such as a specific year or decade. Vintage furniture should be datable to an approximate period of manufacture; if not specifically the year, then at least the decade.

HICKORY FURNITURE MART: 1947
1952
The Mull family opens Hickory Drive-In Grill, which includes a hot dog stand for patrons on the east side of the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart.
The hot dog stand becomes so popular with movie goers that this sparks the idea of converting it into a full scale restaurant and Mull’s Restaurant opens.

1962-1980
Leroy Lail encourages a group of furniture manufacturers to meet twice a year to display their products to furniture buyers inside the building and Hickory Furniture Mart originates from the creative vision of Leroy Lail and Lynn (Mull) Lail.
The Markets at Hickory Furniture Mart continue to gain popularity and grow in attendance. Multiple expansions take place to display more product by more manufacturers.
1992
The Mull family decides to close Mull’s Motel & Restaurant and the Hickory Drive-In Grill and utilize this land to expand Hickory Furniture Mart even more. The Lail family completes another major expansion on the southeast side of the building and Mull’s Motel becomes a Holiday Inn Express.

1958
Due to its prime location and the need for overnight accommodations in the area, the Mull family decides to add a motel on-site. Mull’s Restaurant now becomes Mull’s Motel & Restaurant.
1985
The Lail family decides to convert their bi-annual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination. Visitors from around the world now have access to the most diverse furniture selections under one roof and receive exclusive industry discounts comparable to wholesale pricing that have never been offered to the public before.
Mull’s Restaurant becomes a destination for furniture wholesale dealers and buyers traveling through Hickory on business. Since many of the furniture buyers stay at the motel, local furniture manufacturers establish this as a central meeting point to showcase their current product lines to potential buyers. They use the restaurant’s basement to display more product, leading to the industry’s first wholesale exhibition, which takes place in the basement of Mull’s Restaurant.

WINDOW SHADES Shades are a welcoming accent to any room. Because they are easily adaptable to fit non-standard and curved windows, shades are often a preferred window treatment option for many homeowners. The differences between window shades and blinds are fairly easy to identify. Shades are typically made from soft materials, such as cotton, linen, silk, or any form of natural or synthetic fiber, whereas blinds tend to be made from hard substances like wood or aluminum. Shades are also constructed on a continuous roll that raises or lowers to adjust the amount of light needed in a room, while blinds have slats or vanes that open and close for this same purpose. Fabric selection is an important factor in designing your shades as it has the ability to enhance their overall appearance just by the additional body and texture the fabric creates. Various shapes and sizes of decorative tassels and trims may also be added to completely change the look of your shades in each room. Be mindful of the overall function of your room as well when determining the type of material used. For instance, you should use a fabric that is moisture resistant for your bathroom since shower steam is prevalent on a daily basis, while a lighter fabric is typically needed in your kitchen so that cooking aromas are able to quickly pass through and do not remain trapped. Roman shades have been around for years and are often used because they are tailored, sleek and timeless. They are made from a flat piece of

fabric that folds up accordion-style. If you stay away from trendy fabrics, Roman shades are the most classic option and may be used to create any type of look you desire from casual to formal. Apply beautiful bands on them for an added touch of elegance. Balloon shades create a softer, curvier, more feminine look for your room. They are made to ‘poof’ out along the bottom when raised. Think of ballroom gowns, French Victorian homes, Old World Europe. Balloon shades look best using embellishments that complement the fabric. They may contain just one or several balloons, causing the baseline of the shade to produce a more scalloped look. These shades work great on arched windows. If you want a more formal feel to your room, just lower your balloon shades further down your window. The more fabric that is exposed, the more formal the window treatment appears. Hobbled shades (also termed “teardrop” or “looped” shades) represent a more unique and modernized look. These shades are constructed with soft horizontal pleats or folds that ripple down the face of the fabric. Their horizontal pleats provide depth and definition and add more texture and visual interest to your room. When raised they tend to look more like Roman shades. When lowered they definitely make an impressive statement.

Shades may be mounted on a board or gathered on a rod. Some shades require pull cords, others are designed to be cordless. If you are in need of more privacy, just add a sheer shade to your existing valence. If light-control is a concern, add a number of light-filtering options or even blackout linings. Also keep in mind that shades will create a stack at the top of the window when they are raised. On a tall window, this could minimize the amount of light coming in and limit your overall view. But, the stack of fabric is also favored by many because it creates a visual valance on its own once it is raised, which eliminates the need for a separate window treatment on top. If you are interested in customizing your shades or any window treatment for your home, stop by Resource Design, the Mart’s designer fabric workroom, offering thousands of high-quality fabrics and decorative trims in the most popular colors, styles and designs. LAMP CONVERSIONS: A NEW USE FOR SOMETHING OLD Have you ever thought about converting your grandmother’s favorite vase to a new lamp for your home? The Light Place now offers a unique way to pass down your family’s most cherished heirlooms and make them functional pieces of lighting for you to enjoy throughout your home. Lamp conversions may be made from vases, small statuary bottles and a variety of other objects. They make the perfect gift for a loved one who has everything. They do require drilling holes, usually in the bottom or back side, which will be used to feed a lamp cord through it. Other times, the addition of a lamp base or weighted material may be needed to steady the piece.
Andy Melnyk
Items made of thick glass (such as champagne bottles) and thick walled ceramics (such as folk pottery pieces) are all great prospects for a successful lamp conversion. Most modern plastics (post WW II) and metals (except thin zinc castings, which are just too brittle) also work well. Unfortunately not every object
is convertible. Plaster of Paris is a fairly soft material and drills easily with little applied pressure; however it also fractures easily, which makes it unsuitable for the deep drilling that is often required to perform the lamp conversion. Thin cross section glass and most porcelain objects are also not very good candidates for lamp conversions since they often shatter.
COURTESY OF THE LIGHT PLACE/UTTERMOST LAMPS
The price of each lamp conversion varies based on materials being worked on and the level of difficulty to convert, but most items typically will range from $50-$100. Your lighting expert may ask you to bring in each item for an accurate estimate prior to getting started. All electrical parts and wiring used for each lamp conversion will be installed with UL approved materials, in addition to any structural or ornamental parts that may be either new or upcycled, depending on what is needed and what is available.
24

In addition to lamp conversions, The Light Place also offers lamp repair services. These services include replacement of failed or worn out electrical parts, limited structural and mechanical repairs that do not require any welding or casting of new parts, and complete rewiring when necessary. All repaired lamps will be checked for correct plug to socket polarization and proper orientation, and all electrical parts and wires that are installed will obtain new UL approved materials. Due to the fragile nature of these items, both lamp conversions and lamp repairs are only performed inside the showroom on a carry in basis with a scheduled in-store pick up date upon completion. neck and shoulders. The addition of a keyboard and mouse should help alleviate this.
If you are trying to decide whether or not a standing desk is right for you, transition slowly and create a flexible work area. Find an adjustable height or a sit-stand desk that easily moves up and down and promotes moving back and forth between standing and sitting. Limit your standing time to either 2-3 days a week or 3-4 hours each day until you get used to it. Make sure you also invest in an ergonomically positioned chair to sit in comfortably during those times when you are not standing.
Traditional desks are not going away any time soon. There are still more people who prefer the use of traditional offerings in home office furniture, but many users are just looking at creative ways to incorporate a healthier lifestyle into their daily work activities, even if it is just for a few hours each day.
Standing desks are a healthy way to work and standing regularly has been shown to improve metabolism, attention span, alertness, core strength and overall posture. Standing desks also help to strengthen your back and tend to increase your energy by keeping your blood circulation flowing at a healthy level throughout the day. Many users of standing desks also report that they stay more focused and productive at work and experience less fatigue throughout the day. They also save on
Some users experience foot discomfort in the first few weeks while their feet are still adjusting, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and invest in a padded mat. If you opt to use your laptop vs. a desktop computer, you may also want to purchase a mouse and keyboard since the distance between the screen and the keyboard is significantly smaller than the distance between your eye and your elbow. When you place your laptop at the same height as your elbow, it forces you to look down, which strains your

We are living in a digital world where many of our jobs and activities revolve around the use of computers for several hours at a time every single day. Many of you have heard the phrase “Sitting is the new smoking.” Well, recent studies have shown that Americans are spending more time seated than ever before (at their desks, in their cars, on their sofas) and researchers say it is having an adverse effect on both our bodies and our minds. While it is starting to emerge as a more popular trend in home office products, the idea itself is not new. Ben Franklin and Winston Churchill were two of the standing desks’ earliest adopters.

SELECTING THE RIGHT MATERIAL FOR YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE
TEAK
Teak is a hardwood that is very strong and durable and will last a lifetime if cared for properly. Even though it produces its own oil, you will still need to treat it with special oils and sealants. Teak wood furniture is often left outside year round because it is able to withstand the harshest of elements. Its natural oils help protect your furniture from excessive humidity and also extreme cold temperatures. Softer woods like pine or cedar, may need to be stored during winter seasons, especially in colder climates. Teak also tends to be less heat absorbing than other materials; however it does need to be maintained on a regular basis as it has a tendency to absorb moisture and turn to a gray shade with age if left untreated.
CAST ALUMINUM
Cast aluminum is lightweight yet surprisingly durable and it does not rust or fade. Because it is so lightweight, it is very easy to move around. If you do a lot of entertaining and need to move your furniture often into different configurations, then cast aluminum furniture would be ideal for you. If you live in an area that experiences high winds or gusts on a regular basis, you may want to consider a different option. If left in direct sunlight, cast aluminum also tends to absorb more heat and becomes hot if it is not shaded or covered. Simply apply car wax to cast aluminum furniture to maintain its original appearance.
WROUGHT IRON
The term “wrought” actually means “worked by hand.” Wrought iron differs from cast iron, which is made by using molds. Wrought iron is also very durable and may be left outside year round, although it will require a rust protectant if it is not already powder coated. It may also be painted to improve its resistance to corrosion. You will find many unique, handcrafted and 30

decorative options available in wrought iron designs. Cushions are often needed for added comfort when purchasing wrought iron furniture as it tends to become very hot in the summer if placed directly in the sun and very cold in the winter if left out. Due to its heavy nature, it will not tip over or blow away easily.
COURTESY OF SEASONS OUTDOOR & SUNROOM GALLERY BY HICKORY PARK LLOYD FLANDERS
When considering outdoor furniture options for your home, it is important to not only factor in the look you want, but also the weight of the furniture and how easy it is to move, any indoor space needed for off season storage, the best material for your lifestyle and the outdoor climate in which you live. Here are just a few options for you to consider when selecting the right material for you and your outdoor furniture.
STEEL
Steel is a heavy duty furniture option and works extremely well in cold winter environments with temperatures ranging from excessive rain and heavy snow to extreme heat and cold. It is important to apply a powder coating to help protect it from moisture and prevent rust. Because of the sturdiness of steel, it is able to handle heavy snow and slush piled on top of it. Steel also has a classic look that lends a clean, sophisticated style to any outdoor space.
WICKER
The term wicker actually refers to the woven style in which the furniture is made, not the material used. Wicker may be natural or synthetic. Wicker furniture is usually made from natural plant materials such as cane, rattan, bamboo or a number of other synthetic materials. Natural and synthetic materials are often combined together to reduce the cost and make them more weather resistant. Traditional wicker material should be protected by a canopy, screened in porch, or other covered space because its natural fibers are not designed to endure heavy rain or sun. However, all-weather wicker options are made to handle the outdoor elements just fine. Resin wicker is a longer-lasting weather resistant synthetic fiber wrapped over a metal frame. It is typically also UV-resistant. Wicker is strong and lightweight and is perfect for casual lounging environments. Just remember if you live in areas with high pollen counts, wicker may need to be cleaned
on a more frequent basis during high pollen seasons to prevent pollen dust from collecting inside the weaving. Many people are now using wicker furniture both inside and outside of their homes.
RECYCLED PLASTICS
Plastic furniture is highly portable and easily stacked for storage. It is resistant to moisture, mildew and also fading. Recycled plastics are often used by homes near the ocean since they are more susceptible to salt air and salt water activities. If you live near the ocean, it is important to also make sure all of your outdoor furniture’s hardware is made from a rust resistant material such as stainless steel. And with the waterproof dependability of plastic, it is also a safe option to use for tables and chairs being placed near any outdoor pools.
SUNBRELLA FABRICS
When selecting your outdoor fabrics, Sunbrella is always highly recommended to use on your outdoor furniture. They originally designed their weather resistant and anti-fading materials for marine boats then eventually applied this same technology to a line of outdoor fabrics. Today, Sunbrella offers numerous colors, patterns and styles for any outdoor environment. Many of our showrooms now offer outdoor furniture options in various styles and materials. HONORING SIMPLICITY IN FLORAL DESIGNS Floral designs have been a part of civilization for centuries. The ancient Egyptians absolutely adored flowers. Hieroglyphics in the Great Pyramids, temples and ancient city walls show flowers being offered to the gods and pharaohs. Through the years, every culture has adopted and redefined the style and artistry of arranging flowers. The early cultures of the Japanese created a simplistic, yet dynamic style of floral design called Ikebana (Ik-e-bon-a). It was introduced in Japan in the sixth century by Chinese Buddhist missionaries, who formalized the ritual of offering flowers to Buddha. The art is based on the harmony of simple linear constructions and the appreciation of the subtle beauty of flowers and natural material, such as branches and stems. Today, this style is as popular as it ever was. Ikebana floral arrangements may be as simple as one flower and one leaf, or a single tree branch with all of the other elements systematically following the actual lines of the branch. Ikebana is an honored art form of simplicity, meaning and symbolism. Creating meaningful designs from nature’s beautiful chaos is the inspiration of every floral designer around the globe. CUSTOMIZING YOUR ORIENTAL RUG Most people are used to having the ability to customize their furniture in various materials, colors, shapes and sizes, but did you realize that you are also able to customize your very own fine Oriental rug? Nowadays fine rug owners are looking for something that is completely unique and personal to them. And many times they cannot find exactly what they are looking for so they end up settling with something that does not completely meet their standards or satisfy their needs.
by actually blending vivid colors out from the rug. Once you have shared all of your specific requests, they will send this information directly to the weavers they partner with in India. They work closely with these craftsmen and their families to monitor your order by maintaining constant contact with them. They will send pictures back and forth throughout the entire production process, inspecting their workmanship, color and quality every step of the way.
The process of customizing your own fine Oriental rug is quite simple. All you need to do is bring in your floor plans along with any fabric or leather swatches from your upholstered pieces, any paint colors from your walls and any finishes from your hardwood floors or cabinetry that you would like to match. Our rug experts will then ask you a series of questions to find out which colors, shapes, sizes, designs and materials you would like to use when customizing your rug. They will help you decide which natural fibers will work best, such as wool or silk, based on your lifestyle, budget and personal preferences. If you have a piece of artwork you like, a photograph that is meaningful to you, something you are passionate about‌all of these items will be incorporated into your custom rug design. Are you a dog lover? You may want a rug that reflects this. A history buff? Turn your rug into a memorial tribute. A former butterfly enthusiast

Then decide what it is about the items you like: their color, curved lines vs. straight lines, the way a particular piece sits or feels, etc. Seek inspirations from sources like Pinterest and Google by searching for these same characteristics. Determining the function of a space is just as important as determining your style. Will the space be used for family gatherings or will it be a quiet nook for reading? Combining style and function together will help you narrow down your choices when shopping. Bring everything that you have collected to the Mart and let a professional designer help you select the pieces that will best reflect your true personality and style. ~ Angie Allen, Allied Member, ASID ~ Elizabeth Burns, Allied Member, ASID Hickory Park Furniture Galleries
WHEN CHOOSING PAINT COLORS FOR MY ROOM, HOW DO I MAKE SURE I’M NOT MAKING A MISTAKE?
For some, choosing paint colors is a daunting task, but it is a simple, easy, budget conscious way to refresh your home. Begin by choosing colors that complement existing items in your home such as flooring, countertops, or large furniture pieces. For open floor plan homes, use variations of the same color to add visual interest. Choose an accent color for an inset or an accent wall to your room along with accessories that match. Use eggshell or satin paints for walls and semi-gloss paints for trims and moldings. Still having trouble deciding? Most paint or home improvement stores offer paint swatches. Or, just purchase paint samples to test the colors in your home directly on your walls so you are able to see what they look like during different times of the day. Just a little paint goes a long way towards completely refreshing your space. ~ Sherra Waldrop Bachelor of Science ~ Interior Design Henredon Factory Outlet

HOW DO I INCORPORATE UNIQUE OUTLET PIECES INTO MY HOME?
Everyone loves an outlet … the thrill of finding that unique piece, the thrill of finding a piece that matches something you already have. Finding that special, one-of- a-kind piece is like finding a buried treasure. Most furniture shopping is not like buying a computer or a TV. You find a computer or a TV that you want and there is no waiting on it to be special ordered. Regina Garriga There is immediate gratification. The same holds true for furniture outlets. Look for pieces that complement something you already have. Sometimes a transitional piece is just what a room full of antiques needs. The juxtaposition of the two styles just makes it work. Use outlets for that one of a kind statement piece in your foyer or at the end of the hall that stands alone and doesn’t need 42

to match anything else. Finally, shop outlets for inspiration and ideas. Merchandise changes often and a chest you bought last weekend will look great with the credenza you just found today. ~ Regina Garriga, General Manager, Sales & Design Hooker Factory Outlet 800-462-MART
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DECORATING THEIR HOMES? As a designer it is my passion to create spaces that are livable and timeless. Along the way, I have identified several common design mistakes that are easily avoidable: Scale and Proportion: Clients often select furniture that is either too large or too small. The solution for this is to measure, measure and measure! Bring dimensions of your room with you and we will be happy to help you choose the correct items for your space. Back that sofa away from the wall and select a variety of shapes and heights to give your room intimacy and interest. You always want a room to invite you in and foster good conversation. Debby Buff
Lighting: It is important to layer your lighting in order to set the proper mood. Even though a chandelier may make the perfect statement piece, you must have more than one light source. Lamps act as your room’s jewelry …adding dimmers is also a must. Don’t Rush, Take Your Time: Select pieces you will love for years to come and be willing to listen to advice from professionals. We are here to prevent you from making an expensive mistake before it happens. ~ Debby Buff Debby Buff, Allied Member, ASID Good’s Home Furnishings
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT ARTWORK AND ACCESSORIES FOR MY ROOM?
For some, adding the finishing touches to a room may be overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some pointers to remember when trying to complete that perfect look for any room. Consider your budget. Have a budget in mind that works for you. Remember that you don’t need to spend a fortune to make your room look like a million bucks! Look through pictures of room shots that you like, and maybe even specific accessories that you have seen. For inspiration, search the internet or clip pictures from various fashion and home furnishings magazines. Make sure your artwork and Molly Lamp accessories reflect your personality and style. Remember, you are going to be living in the room that you have decorated so make sure you are comfortable with your decisions. Choosing one main focal point to work around is a great place to start. Always keep in mind the scale of your room. You want to maintain balance. Measure the walls in the areas where you are planning to hang your accessories. This will help eliminate getting something too large or too small for any given space. Lastly, don’t be afraid to try something new. Thinking “out of the box” will make you the envy of all your friends. Creatively hanging items on a wall that were not intended to be hung there is a great example of this. ~ Molly Lamp Bachelor of Science ~ Interior Design Simply Home by Lindy’s Furniture 800-462-MART

CONSIDERING LEATHER UPHOLSTERY? Are you considering buying new upholstery for your home or office? If you are looking for timeless comfort, high usability and furniture that actually improves with age, then you should consider purchasing leather.
Today, there are still all the shades of brown you might ever imagine, but there are also additional colors that will reflect your style and personality while complementing other pieces of furniture in your home. If you prefer purchasing your leather in a color other than brown, there are countless colors to choose from, so just ask your sales associate to show you all of their options in your favorite color palette. Besides color, you will also need to decide on other attributes that affect the look and feel of your leather. Are you wanting something that is uniform in color? Then you might want to consider a top-grain leather. If you are looking for more of a classic-vintage vibe, then a full-grain wax pull-up leather will accomplish that. Would you prefer something that is soft to the touch and feels just like that nostalgic old leather jacket you never wanted to take off in high school? If so, a full-grain oil pull-up leather might be right for you. Not only are there countless leather colors to choose from today, but there are also many different styles of furniture to upholster in leather. Whether your favorite styles are traditional, transitional, casual, modern, stationary or reclining furniture, I am confident that we will be able to find the right look and style of leather just for you.
There are a few questions you need to ask yourself before you decide on what type of upholstery is right for you and your lifestyle. Do I have a need for leather? How do I take care of my leather? Will leather give me the look I want? Am I able to afford leather? Do I have a need for leather? With the hectic lifestyles we all live today, the last thing that anyone wants to worry about is their furniture. Many people decide to purchase leather furniture because they either have children or pets or a mixture of both in their home. Leather upholstery has been proven to stand up to the daily wear and abuse that busy families will inflict upon it. So if you are worried about whether or not leather will be right for your two-legged children (as well as your four-legged children), then ask our leather experts about the best leather for you.
Jason Dunn
How do I take care of my leather? Well the main reason you purchased leather to begin with was because you did not want to spend a lot of money or time maintaining it. A nice leather sofa
Now, onto the look of leather. Is leather the right look for me? Many years ago, leather furniture was available in brown, brown and maybe ‌ you guessed it ‌ brown.

will only improve with time. However, accidents are bound to occur. There are products that we are able to recommend depending on what type of leather you own. Not every type of cleaner should be used on every kind of leather. And a normal cleaning schedule should be maintained every 6-12 months. By using a simple leather cleaner and conditioner (again, make sure you consult with a reputable leather expert before purchasing), you will be able to easily extend the life of your leather furniture.
And finally, we come to discussing the price of leather. Am I able to afford leather? There was a time, not so long ago, when leather upholstery options were limited to only the highest end furniture products. Today, all of that has changed. With the extreme popularity of leather, there are multiple options at nearly any budget or price point. Most leather manufacturers have their own grading scale (just remember that no two companies use the same scale). The grading scale does not always mean that the higher grade of leather will necessarily be the better leather option for you. The leather grade is based on overall cost of the leather to the manufacturer. So whatever you plan to spend, ask a reputable leather expert to explain what might work best for you based on your desired look, budget and lifestyle. If you would like answers to your own personal questions about leather, stop by Leather and More, a dedicated leather gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart specializing in American-Made fine leather products for your home. AMERICAN MADE CRAFTSMANSHIP INSIDE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS
“Our roots go deep in the town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, where we began 27 years ago‚ and where our headquarters and modern factory still are today. There, our skilled local artisans, many of whose families have crafted furniture for generations, work with designers to bring our modern vision of comfort to life. Crafting earth-friendly upholstery in America is how we achieved the master-level quality and comfort for which we’re known. And it gives many more benefits: to Bob and I, our workforce, and our customers. We’re on-site to personally ensure quality, as well as oversee the comfort and safety of our team through smart choices in materials, manufacturing, and work environment. It also supports the U.S. economy by providing more jobs. And it lets us offer career benefits to make life easier for employees & their families, including on-site educationbased daycare for their children and members of our community.
devoted leaders in sustainability, our strategy includes everything from cushions free of fire-retardant chemicals to wood frames from local partners to extensive recycling, decreased energy use and support of lawmakers & legislation that hold our industry accountable. We’ve been aided in this by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, of which we’re founding members and I’m on the Board. We’re conscious of the mark we make on this planet. Our customers can trust that when they buy our upholstery, they’re making a positive impact: not only in their homes, but on the future. Crafting our upholstery in America makes this possible, and we are here to stay.” ~ Mitchell Gold, “Chair-man”

OUTLETS OFFER INSTANT GRATIFICATION, SAVINGS AND IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for years as one of North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and design resources and international travel destinations. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is available to order for any preference), galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and also available immediately and sold off the floor “as is”).
Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is rare that the same exact piece will be offered again. Most customers end up mixing and matching outlet items with custom product when furnishing their homes. The savings you can find on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you need to place on another piece of furniture that you saw in a retail showroom and could not live without. And as an additional perk, you are able to take outlet product home with you immediately. If you find out that you will be entertaining family at the last minute and need to furnish
that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up any additional items you may need in a short period of time. We have received several visits from customers who have experienced a natural disaster in their hometowns. They need furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically backlogged with so much unexpected demand. Many of our outlets and retail showrooms will work together with victims and offer additional discounts with requested expedited delivery for entire communities affected by these types of disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms for much less. Stop by and visit all of the outlets and showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire year. HFM
COURTESY OF MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET/MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS
Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 percent off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one of a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers have canceled or customers have returned for various reasons. New outlet product arrives direct from factories and retail
showrooms daily so outlet inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, it is best to secure your purchase right away since most outlets are not able to hold product and sales are offered on a first come, first serve basis.
