AMERICAN MADE CRAFTSMANSHIP INSIDE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS “Our roots go deep in the town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, where we began 28 years ago‚ and where our headquarters and modern factory still are today. There, our skilled local artisans, many of whose families have crafted furniture for generations, work with designers to bring our modern vision of comfort to life. Crafting earth-friendly upholstery in America is how we achieved the master-level quality and comfort for which we’re known. And it gives many more benefits: to Bob and I, our workforce, and our customers. We’re on-site to personally ensure quality, as well as oversee the comfort and safety of our team through smart choices in materials, manufacturing, and work environment. It also supports the U.S. economy by providing more jobs. And it lets us offer career benefits to make life easier for employees & their families, including on-site education-based daycare for their children and members of our community.

Since 1989 — not since it became fashionable — we’ve been concerned with climate change. As devoted leaders in sustainability, our strategy includes everything from cushions free of fire-retardant chemicals to wood frames from local partners to extensive recycling, decreased energy use and support of lawmakers & legislation that holds our industry accountable. We’ve been aided in this by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, of which we’re founding members and I’m on the Board. We’re conscious of the mark we make on this planet. Our customers can trust that when they buy our upholstery, they’re making a positive impact: not only in their homes, but on the future. Crafting our upholstery in America makes this possible, and we are here to stay.” ~ Mitchell Gold, “Chair-man”

ABOUT THE COVER For over 50 years, Leathercraft has been dedicated to the craft of manufacturing the finest leather upholstery seating available. Located in the highlands of Western North Carolina, this area is rich in highly skilled craftsmen, which are the backbone of Leathercraft’s enduring quality. Leathercraft’s goal is to produce upholstered furniture to the highest standards possible utilizing the best materials and employing true tested manufacturing techniques. These construction techniques exceed industry standards in every possible detail. All components which comprise the interior of fine seating ~ from select hardwood frames to prime waterfowl down ~ are of the highest quality. Leathercraft also believes that the real art is in the placement. Selecting the area of the hide that each part of your furniture will be cut from is critical. It takes human hands to precisely place the pattern to maximize the hide’s true potential. This creates a unique piece of furniture that presents nature’s signature. What is perfect leather? Leathercraft believes that the perfect leather is one that shows the genuine character of the leather hide. Scratches, scars, insect bites, neck wrinkles and brands, verify authenticity. They feel that leather should look like leather and they proudly offer their customers the freedom and flexibility to customize each product to meet their individual needs. If you are looking for a leather product that offers the best in appearance, comfort and performance, visit Amish Oak & Cherry located at the South entrance on Level 2.

DESTINED FOR DESIGN Helen Starnes always had an eye for design, so it was no surprise when she and her husband Ralph opened up Vick Paint & Wallpaper Co. in High Point, NC. Helen and Ralph were a perfect team and in the 1940’s and 1950’s they became well-known for designing Market showrooms for some of the region’s most popular furniture manufacturers. Helen loved working with a blank canvas and creating a different masterpiece for every showroom she designed. She could transform the personality of any room just by selecting the right paint color or wall covering that expressed the mood she wanted it to convey.

Sally McEachern absolutely adored her grandmother Helen and she spent many of her childhood days following her around, watching her while she worked. It became such a part of who she was and she wouldn’t even realize how much her grandmother’s passion influenced her and became her own passion until years later.

after and recruited by multiple employers before even graduating. After graduation, Sally attended a friend’s wedding, met her soulmate Keith Bentley and after only three dates they married and she moved to Hickory where Keith owned a business in Lenoir. Sally took a job with Alderman Studios, a prominent set design studio based in High Point. She worked at their Lenoir office for the next two years designing sets for furniture product catalog photo shoots. From 1982-1984 Sally worked on commercial design projects in Hickory and in 1984 she decided it was time to open her own design firm in downtown Hickory with Marsha White, whom she met through some of her business contacts. They registered the name Designing Women, Inc., (the same year the popular TV show Designing Women aired) but many referred to them around town as Bentley-White Interior Design. In the beginning, they focused mainly on contract design work in hospitals, hotels and corporate offices. They also worked with major developers to upfit their properties. In 1989, Bentley-White Interior Design was selected as the dedicated design firm to work on a $14 million renovation project at Catawba Memorial Hospital. They designed the hospital’s first-ever birthing center and MRI center, along with their emergency room and oncology centers.

Sally followed in the footsteps of her grandmother Helen and her mother Pat. Pat was an artist and a painter and Sally always had a knack for artistic designs. Pat recalls a recent conversation she had with Sally when she told her “You always knew what you wanted to be … I remember the day you told me ‘I’m not wasting four years of my life studying something that doesn’t interest me. I’m going to design school.’” And Sally did just that. In 1975 she attended the Atlanta School of Design in GA where she graduated and continued her design studies at Randolph Technical College (RTC) in Asheboro, NC. There she learned about all technical aspects of wiring and construction as it relates to home construction and design. As with most students enrolled at RTC, she was highly sought 14

Sally and Marsha quickly found themselves taking on additional residential projects in the evenings at many of their client’s personal homes, and they began spending more time at Hickory Furniture Mart to shop for these projects. It was around 1996 when Sally and Marsha decided to move their offices from downtown Hickory into a new office space, located next to Hickory Furniture Mart. At the time, all showroom

spaces inside the Mart were completely full, but a year later, a cozy little nook opened up when an outdoor accessory gallery decided to move their products into a larger space. Bentley-White Interior Design moved inside Hickory Furniture Mart and started promoting themselves under their official name of Designing Women. They now offered both commercial and residential design services and their unique Designer for the Day program helped customers who traveled to Hickory from all over the world just to purchase their furniture here. Sally and Marsha enjoyed the success of their new venture together, but Sally had always dreamed of owning her own design firm and growing it to another level, so eventually Sally bought out Marsha’s share of the company and continued to grow Designing Women into a fulltime design firm hiring multiple interior designers and offering design graduates internships throughout their college years. Two of these interns, Kirsten Hart-White and Gina Simmons, would make their way back after college and find a permanent home on Sally’s design team along with Donna Chamberlain who was an experienced designer and former furniture business owner already working at the Mart. Today Designing Women is a successful and established interior design firm offering professional design services in residential and commercial design. They still offer their popular Designer for the Day program along with many new services in person and online. When asked if she still has the same passion she did in the beginning, Sally smiles and says “My job truly is my hobby. I would still be designing every single day, even if I didn’t do this for a living.” HFM 800-462-MART

REFLECTIONS FURNITURE Born into an Italian family and raised in Belgium, Giovanni Guidi became an engineer by trade and immigrated to America in 1981 with his wife Natalie and two young daughters, Vanessa and Corinne. He traveled to America full of excitement and ambition, going to work for a local glass company located in the foothills of North Carolina. In 1982, Giovanni and Natalie welcomed their third daughter, Lisa into their family and when the glass company closed a few years later, they decided to open up a small wholesale business inside Hickory Furniture Mart selling solid glass clocks, glass pedestals and glass tables that Giovanni personally engineered, designed and constructed with his very own hands. Working with glass and becoming fascinated with the artistic reflections they created, he was inspired by the name Reflections and chose it to represent his new business. In 1985, when Hickory Furniture Mart transitioned from a wholesale exhibition center into a retail furniture shopping destination, Giovanni and Natalie decided to expand their original product line to offer more contemporary and modern European influenced designs. These lines were introduced to Giovanni by many of his industry colleagues, and they

of success as a local family business, expanding from one small gallery to four large independent galleries inside the Mart. Now Giovanni’s daughters are taking their family business to the next level and exposing a new generation to everything their father and mother worked so hard to create. And they will carry on their parent’s legacy by teaching their own children about the business, cultivating a third generation of local family furniture retailers in Hickory. HFM

appealed to him because they tied back to his European roots. What originally started out as a small wholesale business with limited product lines, quickly expanded into an extensive selection of contemporary furniture, artwork and accessory options for the modern home. Reflections soon transformed into Reflections Furniture to include their furniture offerings and in 2017 they celebrated 30 years

LEATHER & MORE For years Monique Dunn traveled around the world selling high-end jewelry to wholesalers and retailers. She fully understood the needs and desires of her affluent clientele and she was highly respected by her vendors and industry peers. As she entered into her late fifties, when so many others in the business were looking forward to an early retirement, Monique decided to completely shift course and challenge herself in a new industry, but one that shared the same type of customer. She took a job with a local furniture company in High Point, NC and sold high-end residential and commercial leather furniture. She learned everything she could, not only about the furniture industry, but also about premium leathers, and quickly established valuable key contacts in both industries. With the support of many local manufacturers, Monique decided to open up her own premier 800-462-MART

leather furniture company in 2004. She started out with only 3,000 square feet of showroom space and called it Leather and More. Her goal was to eventually expand and move into a second location inside Hickory Furniture Mart, but at the time, the Mart was completely full. In late 2005, a space became available at the Mart, which was about double the size of her High Point location, so she convinced her son Jason to join her as a partner in the business and run the Hickory location. Then in late 2008, when an even larger 11,000 square foot showroom became available inside the Mart, they decided to expand and consolidate the entire business, moving all of their operations to Hickory, where they continue to operate today offering a wide variety of American Made premium leather furniture products to all of their customers. MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET Mike Eaton was only 16 years old when he started working for a small local furniture retailer. They only had four employees. They each did everything from selling furniture to warehousing and even delivering it. Mike learned every aspect of the furniture business inside and out throughout the nearly 30 years that he worked in retail furniture. In 1998, he decided to open his own clearance center, where he

represented and sold clearance products from several North Carolina based furniture manufacturers. At the time, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams was not the common household name it is today. But Mike fell in love instantly with the product and the people making it. He knew that it was just a matter of time before everyone else would learn about it and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams would become the phenomenon that it is today. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams

became more and more popular as they started partnering with additional retailers, designers and distributors around the world. They also began showcasing their products at the furniture Markets in High Point and eventually decided to open up their own independent retail stores. With all of this growth and transition came even more inventory and the need to increase their customer base by partnering with an established and recognizable location already frequented by furniture shoppers.

So in 2006. Mike, Mitchell and Bob decided to move their showroom from Hwy. 70 at Hwy. 321, just down the road to Hickory Furniture Mart. They opened up their new Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Factory Outlet with approximately 18,000 square feet of showroom space. This year, Mike will celebrate his 20 year anniversary of owning his business, which transformed from a multi-line clearance center to the one and only factory-owned and authorized Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Factory Outlet that he continues to operate today. THE LIGHT PLACE It was serendipity along with the help of a few old friends that brought Anne Wepner to the world of lighting. In 2010 she opened a small local lighting gallery in Newton, NC and called it Fixtures N More, where she sold lamps and lighting fixtures to the local community. Then in 2011, she decided to attend a regional chamber business networking event that was being hosted at Hickory Furniture Mart and as luck would have it, her table was placed directly in front of a recently vacated showroom with beautiful display windows along with a private dock. She could not help but think about all the possibilities that a larger space could bring. It was at that same time that the general manager of the Mart introduced herself to Anne and they immediately started talking 20

about that space for a proposed second lighting gallery. Within a couple of months, Anne had decided to expand her lighting business and open a second lighting gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart and called it The Light Place. She increased her offerings to include accessories, mirrors and smaller furniture pieces, in addition to all varieties of lamps, shades, chandeliers, ceiling fans and indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. Anne’s customers in Newton were mainly locals and her showroom visitors at the Mart were a great mix of local, out-of-state and international customers. So, in 2013 she decided to consolidate her two locations into one and moved all of her inventory over to Hickory Furniture Mart where she continues to operate her business 8 years later. When asked what makes them different than other lighting stores, Anne says “Our specialty is providing our customers with that unique

finishing touch. It may be a perfect lamp, chandelier or mirror that just fits perfectly and adds a touch of their own personality to that space. Our pieces are as unique as our customers and we love helping them in selecting those special items that make their house feel more like a home.“ HFM 800-462-MART

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Although bright colors and fun patterns will continue to be a favorite choice for many, darker hues are now making their way outdoors. Deep purples and violets add a touch of sophistication while various shades of coastal and ocean blues are reminiscent of your last trip to the beach. Charcoal greys and blacks will also be very popular this year. If you choose these bolder colors for your main pieces, make sure to lighten things up a bit by contrasting them with lighter colored throw pillows and accessories.

homeowners are opting for versatile and mobile fire pits. In addition to the classic round fire pits, you will notice more square and angular options available this year. And if you decide to make your fire pit mobile so you have the ability to move it from one location to another with ease, simply add casters to the bottom of it.

Our outdoor spaces have started to mirror our indoor environments even more this year and you will often hear homeowners refer to their patio or deck as their second living room. Comfort takes precedence and is one of the most popular trends in outdoor furniture this season. From oversized pillows and cushions to full upholstered pieces designed in soft, durable outdoor fabrics made to withstand the harshest of elements, people want to relax and feel comfortable while enjoying their time outdoors.

Outdoor areas are often shoe-free zones so make sure you give your outdoor flooring the attention your feet deserve. Options range from fashionable outdoor floor tiles, to outdoor area rugs or even a fresh coat of paint. Remote work environments are allowing people more freedom to work from home and many prefer to do so outside while soaking up the sun. Outdoor office spaces are on the rise and many outdoor furniture manufacturers are making their products tech friendly and USB adaptable. And finally, you will want to pick up some accessories that make your outdoor space complete such as outdoor lighting, candle holders, ceiling fans, throw pillows, along with ottomans and small stools that will also double as additional table or seating options and are easy to tuck away when not in use. veryone knows it. Everyone uses it. Yet to those who live in Hickory and the Catawba Valley region, the definition of furniture is so much deeper, richer and stronger. People eat, sleep and breathe furniture in this community. So much of who we are and what we do revolves around this one simple word. The history of furniture runs so deep in our community that its roots intertwine with countless industries, businesses and common aspects of everyday life. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 60% of all furniture in American homes originates from North Carolina furniture manufacturers and related industry vendors. And many of these furniture businesses are located right here in our region. If you ever visit Hickory, you will notice that almost everywhere you turn, the people you meet all have some connection to furniture. Whether their grandfather hauled lumber to a local sawmill for furniture production, their 32

father worked directly in a factory upholstering furniture, or their aunt worked as an interior designer helping visitors select the best furniture for their homes, for over a century, this community has truly been shaped by furniture. To this day, when you travel around the world and tell people where you are from, they almost always smile and recite that one familiar word: FURNITURE. Hickory can trace its furniture heritage back to the early 1900’s. George W. Hall was a local merchant who watched freight trains haul southern lumber to northern furniture factories. Hall and a group of Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that Hickory’s regional lumber supplies should be used to build furniture in Hickory to support the local economy. After much deliberation and careful planning, they opened up the first furniture factory in town and called it Hickory Furniture Company. Hall was only 28 years old at the time when he

managed that first factory and after it was successful, he decided to help start Hickory’s second furniture factory - Martin Furniture Co., which opened less than a year later. These two factories helped create a solid foundation for furniture manufacturers to grow and branch off into new companies for many years to come. The plentiful lumber resources and trade routes along the native rivers in the Catawba Valley region provided a natural pathway, which encouraged skilled craftsmen and designers to settle in Hickory. These craftsmen trained the eager workforce that already existed in the area. By the 1920’s and 1930’s, more furniture factories continued to open and expand throughout Hickory and the Catawba Valley. In the late 1950’s another local businessman and his wife — Leroy Lail and Lynn Mull Lail — owned a successful motel and restaurant in Hickory. Mull’s Motel and Restaurant was already a popular destination for furniture 800-462-MART

The original Mull’s Motel and Restaurant

The Southern Furniture Market welcomes buyers

wholesale dealers and buyers traveling through town on business. Since many of these buyers stayed at the motel and ate at the restaurant while they were in town, several local furniture manufacturers decided to establish Mull’s as a central meeting point to showcase all of their product lines to potential new customers. Once their product lines became larger and more diverse, Leroy and Lynn offered to open up the basement of their restaurant to these furniture manufacturers so they could display more of their products to these buyers who were already staying on-site at their motel. It was around 1960, when Leroy Lail encouraged a core group of local furniture manufacturers to come together as an industry and display their products twice a year on a much larger scale; once in the spring and once in the fall. The manufacturers agreed and this bi-annual wholesale furniture event became known as The Southern Furniture Market, which took place on the same site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. The Southern Furniture Market continued to gain popularity and grow in attendance over the years. By 1985, the Lail family decided to convert their biannual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination where locally owned furniture manufacturers could distribute their products through locally owned retail furniture showrooms. For the first time ever, visitors from around the world now had public access to the most diverse high-quality handcrafted furniture selections available with the additional benefit of receiving exclusive industry discounts that were comparable to wholesale pricing. The Southern Furniture Wholesale Market officially transitioned into Hickory Furniture Mart and Hickory soon became known as The Furniture Capital of The World. To this day, visitors from every US state and several international countries continue to travel to Hickory Furniture Mart to purchase their furniture where the quality, value, selection and service is unlike anywhere else. 800-462-MART

Over the years the furniture industry has continued to transform itself. Like any industry, it has weathered the natural ebbs and flows of the economic pendulum, and it continues to evolve. The advancement of technology has changed not only the way furniture is manufactured, distributed and sold, but it also opens up new modernized career opportunities in both furniture and design. For those companies and job seekers willing to embrace these changes, the opportunities are endless. Today, the furniture industry in this region is experiencing substantial growth, especially in custom upholstered products. Many manufacturers are expanding and finding a need to add to their workforce in order to meet an increased demand for their products. This presents a new set of challenges for the furniture industry … training the next generation with the same expert skills of previous generations. Understanding this emerging need, several local furniture manufacturers proactively joined forces to recruit and train the next generation of furniture craftsmen. Their vision was to create an industry-driven training program that would prepare students 8-way hand-tied for skilled craftmanship positions that are in high-demand by one of the region’s largest employers ~ the furniture industry.

The program partners with a local community college and offers a series of classes including furniture fundamentals, pattern making, manual and automated cutting, sewing, introduction to upholstery, inside and outside upholstery and spring up. Students learn the necessary skills from experienced craftsman within the local furniture community. The Furniture Academy at Catawba Valley Community College currently has two campus locations in this region and is used as a successful model for other cities and states who have added similar programs in shared and related industries. Century Furniture, Lee Industries, Lexington Home Brands, Sherrill Furniture and Vanguard Furniture are all founding partners of this program, which continues to receive accolades for their vision and commitment to working together as a community to fulfill a common need. The Furniture Academy not only helps furniture manufacturers obtain skilled craftsmen, it also helps support the local workforce and directly benefits the regional economy. As the world continues to change, so will the furniture industry. Preserving time honored traditions of handcrafting high-quality furniture will remain a top priority but will also be modified to meet the changing demands of a new generation that is more mobile, tech savvy and environmentally conscious. These are all common challenges within any industry, but the furniture industry in this region has a proven track record for being a resilient community that rises to the occasion with any good challenge. IGNITING A PASSION FOR RUGS He continues to expand his inventory by listening to his customers every day.

Every Oriental rug tells a story, and these stories are intricately woven into each rug by the skilled hands of some of the most gifted craftsmen. The art of rug weaving is a timehonored tradition in many cultures that is commonly passed down from one generation to the next. But that was not the case with David Mostafaloo. He was born and raised in Iran but his father was not in the rug business. Working in the import/export business allowed David to travel the world. He remembers vividly the exact moment when he realized he had a passion for rugs and a natural intuition that would send him on a successful journey to opening his own

rug gallery and devoting his life to supporting the remarkable rug weavers and the cultural traditions of his native land. “I remember traveling with a business associate of mine, who was also an avid rug collector. One day while we were traveling, he stopped in this place to look at a gorgeous Oriental rug that caught his eye. He really liked the rug, however he noticed an imperfection and revealed it to the owner. The rug dealer argued with him and my colleague showed me how the rug patterns did not align properly and the colors did not match up. I understood exactly what he was saying and it instantly triggered a passion inside of me and a desire to know more about these rugs and the process of how they are created. I started to look at them differently … not as rugs, but as pieces of artwork that tell stories with every color, pattern and knot. I knew at that very moment that my life had just completely changed.” 800-462-MART

After that business trip, David started to learn as much as he possibly could about rugs. He took a job in a large rug gallery and listened to customers every day when they shared what they wanted and what they didn’t want in a rug. He started to notice that customers in different areas of the world, different cultures and different backgrounds, liked different colors, different patterns, and different styles. He didn’t want customers to just select from a pile of rugs, he wanted to also give them the opportunity to customize their own rugs, based on what inspired them. So in 2002, he decided to open up his own gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart and called it Unique Oriental Rugs & More by David. He started out with only 49 rugs and a modest showroom space of only 700 square feet. In 2004 he expanded to about 3,000 square feet and nearly doubled his inventory. And then he noticed that previous customers started referring their friends and family to him. He wanted to offer his loyal customers even more options, so in 2006, he expanded his current gallery to 11,000 square feet and now offers over 2,000 rug choices.

Along the way, David has inspired his son Saman to become a second generation rug dealer. After completing his business management degree at UNC Charlotte, Saman joined David as a partner in the family business. They recently changed their business name to Roya Rugs, which means dream in Persian. This ties back to their family’s Persian heritage. Saman is passionate about keeping the tradition of rug weaving alive and exposing it to a new generation. He has even personally designed a new line of rugs that speaks more to the millennial generation. Saman believes color is the most important aspect of any rug since no style ever really dies. “You will always find people who prefer traditional rugs and some that prefer contemporary rugs, but depending on where they live, the architecture changes. The key to changing the look of a rug is to discover new and exciting colors in everyday life. I look at everything as a color. I look at different aspects of nature and see colors that have never been used before. I look at fabrics and visualize a combination of colors that would make beautiful patterns in rugs.” Both David and Saman shared that in the rug industry, you are constantly looking 1-2 years ahead to identify new colors, new patterns and new trends since it takes approximately 6 months to a year for a rug weaver to create a new rug. And they want to make sure they offer rugs for every style, size and budget in a variety of hand-knotted, hand-loomed and hand-tufted options, which is why they proudly feature the largest selection of antique and new rugs around. David said it’s exciting to watch his baby boomer customers bring in their millennial children to work with Saman. He understands what they are looking for to create an environment at home that expresses their individuality. It’s a dream and a passion that David and Saman now share together through Roya Rugs. HICKORY PARK FURNITURE GALLERIES David Bolick is the third generation in a family of furniture retailers and manufacturers. He is also a business owner and partner in Hickory Park Furniture Galleries. David’s grandfather Charles Sr. worked at Southern Furniture Co. for years and his father Charles Jr. also started his career in furniture at Southern Furniture Co. sweeping its factory floors at a very young age. Charles Jr. would soon move on to work at other furniture companies learning as much as possible about the furniture industry and quickly working his way up through the ranks.

David recalls how instrumental his father was in their start-up success. “In 1976, my father started his furniture company, which made a full line of upholstered products. He named it Alexvale, after Alexander County where his business was located and vale, which signified the vales of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They were also one of the largest importers of wicker and rattan furniture. At one time, he employed over 500 people at his manufacturing plant in Taylorsville, NC. When his business was eventually bought out by La-Z-Boy, we continued to carry his products in our store and expanded by adding several other lines to the mix. We are very fortunate that we have been continuously growing ever since.” David built the company with his father Charles Jr., his brother Tim and his cousin Brett. All had a background in furniture and were excited about creating a company of their very own that they could all be proud of and run together as 38

a family. In 1982, they opened up their business in Hickory under the name Far East Cargo, in reference to David’s father’s wicker and rattan origins. Then in the spring of 1986, due to their family’s longstanding friendship with the Lail family, they moved from their original location along Hwy. 127 into a 10,559 square foot space inside Hickory Furniture Mart. They changed their name to Far East Galleries to embrace the furniture gallery atmosphere in their new showroom. Then in 1988 they decided to rebrand their business one last time and chose the name Hickory Park Furniture Galleries, which they continue to operate under today. Hickory Park Furniture Galleries pays homage to the city where they have been located since the very beginning. They have been in business for almost 36 years and have been located inside the Mart for 32 of those years. David was part of the first group of retail tenants that started selling products to residential and commercial furniture customers inside the building once it converted from wholesale to retail distribution.

He has become a critical part of their sales and internet development growth. Longevity is what sets Hickory Park Furniture Galleries apart from so many other furniture stores. Longevity with their executive managers, their sales and design staff and their physical location inside the Mart. David is proud to employ some of the area’s most knowledgeable industry veterans on his team. That is why he always encourages customers to make the trip

Hickory Park Furniture Galleries has expanded over the years adding new lines, additional space and new sales and design consultants each year and now offers customers nearly 90,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor furniture and accessory options in every style and price point, including some of North Carolina’s most well-known furniture manufacturers. In 1993, Brian Gee joined the team as a sales consultant and 25 years later is now their Vice President.

Many of the sales and design associates inside the building were born and raised in the furniture industry and have strong ties to the manufactures and craftsmen in our area. They are trained by the best of the best and look forward to helping you select exactly what you are looking for whether it be for your home or office needs. HFM 800-462-MART

GOOD’S HOME FURNISHINGS The owners of Good’s Home Furnishings, Randy Good and Scott Lever, collectively have around 50 years of experience within the furniture industry. They met and started working together for a well-known furniture retailer in 1992. Since they had cultivated solid relationships with all of their manufacturers, vendors and employees throughout the years, they felt it was the perfect opportunity to branch out on their own. In a time when many other retailers were adjusting their businesses in order to survive, Good’s Home Furnishings was creating a new company. They opened their first small location inside the Mart in the summer of 2009 and today have five locations occupying nearly 90,000 square feet inside Hickory Furniture Mart plus a 25,000 square foot location in Pineville, NC. Randy and Scott are both from the HickoryCharlotte area of NC, where they’ve raised their families and have deep roots. It has

always been important to them to give back by providing jobs and contributing to local charities. They’re also big believers in doing business the right way…with integrity towards both their customers and employees. At this same time, they look forward to making furniture shopping fun and helping customers create a more beautiful home that’s reflective of their personal style. The team of salespeople, designers, and support personnel they’ve assembled is second to none.

We sincerely value our employees and in turn, our employees value the relationships they have with our customers. We’re by no means perfect, but we’re determined to get better every day.” HFM

“We have absolutely the best seasoned team in the industry, including merchandising, IT, operations, accounting, marketing, sales and design. They all represent years of experience in the furniture industry. Most have been with us since day one. They’re friends we’ve worked with for more than 15 to 20 years. We’ve watched each other’s kids grow up, shared struggles, and grown as a team. In this family-oriented atmosphere we understand how important it is to work closely with our communities and with each other to provide superior service. Our furniture and accessory brands represent some of the most recognizable names in the luxury home furnishings’ industry.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS AND FOUR GENERATIONS OF SELLING FURNITURE

The Hudson family first made their way to Rhodhiss, North Carolina in 1917. Shortly thereafter, Southern Power Company acquired the Hudson family farmland to build what is now known as Rhodhiss Dam, so Jones Edney (J.E.) Hudson moved his family to 250 acres of land, next to the main railroad station in Connelly Springs.

At that time, most railroad stations were using Morse Code as a key method of sending communication back and forth between engine and caboose crews, so J.E. quickly taught himself Morse Code and found work at a nearby railroad station. His dedication and strong work ethic was soon recognized and rewarded with a promotion and transfer to the Connelly Springs Station where he dedicated 32 years of his life working as their Station Master. Since J.E. ended his daily shifts at 8am each morning, he and his nephew Fred Hudson decided to go into business together and open a general store where they sold groceries, shoes and tailor made clothing to the local community during the day. But not long after they opened their business, a fire broke out and burned two adjoining buildings, so J.E. and Fred decided to rebuild and shift their focus from selling general merchandise to furniture and farm equipment. After 19 years of working side by side, J.E. and Fred decided to divide the business up and

expand. J.E. partnered with his two sons, Jones Edney Jr. (Ed Jr.) Hudson and Harry Lindy (Lindy) Hudson. Shortly after, Lindy was drafted into the US Army, so J.E. Sr. and Ed Jr. continued to run the store together until J.E. Sr.’s passing. After his father’s death, Lindy was allowed to leave the Army and return home to help care for his mother and continue running the family business, which was now called Hudson Furniture, with his brother. Ed Jr. and Lindy rented an additional building in Hickory to expand and open a second location of their business. Lindy ran the Connelly Springs store and Ed Jr. ran the Hickory store. Unfortunately, several buildings in downtown Hickory had to be demolished to make room for new urban development, so Ed Jr. decided to move out of their downtown

Lindy purchased the former White Furniture Building in downtown Hickory and called it Lindy’s Furniture, where it still sits today and is operated by Lindy’s daughter Katie HudsonPurgason. In 2016, Katie had the vision to expand and open a third location called Simply Home by Lindy’s, which is located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. They started small but have been extremely successful with their family business model and have already expanded three times within the last two years. When asked what has made her family businesses so successful all these years, Katie shared “We’ve always stayed true to our values from day one. The entire family is heavily involved from my father all the way down to the grandkids. We run an honest business and we treat our customers just like we would our own family. We know if we treat them well, they will come back year after year. We think it’s important to offer good prices, easy credit and great selections that are affordable to everyone. I think my grandfather would be very proud of the way we have honored his legacy and I’m just sorry that he couldn’t be here to celebrate our 100 year anniversary with us.” HFM

HERITAGE FURNITURE GALLERIES Rick Grant has an extensive background and interesting history in furniture retailing that dates back many years. Along the way, Rick has forged many significant partnerships within the furniture industry and in 2009, as a result of his longstanding relationship with Hickory Furniture Mart, Rick and DeDra Grant decided to open Hooker Furniture Outlet inside the Mart. Their first business was so successful that they continued to open more showrooms and today currently own a total of four retail showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart. In addition to owning these retail showrooms,

Rick is also a partner in Charleston Forge, a local furniture manufacturing company located in Boone, NC. In 2011, Rick partnered with Duane Parker, another furniture industry veteran, to open Heritage Furniture Outlet. Not long after that showroom was up and running, they acquired Southern Style Fine Furniture and also opened up Heritage Furniture Gallery & Clearance Center. Duane now serves as the president of all four retail showrooms inside the Mart.

Mart mix and started pursuing relationships with their current manufacturers, while including more outlet and clearance products off the floor that customers could take home with them immediately. They continue to offer many custom order high-end manufacturers within their showrooms so they feel they are offering a great range of products and price points to satisfy customers at any budget level. Rick and Duane enjoy their partnership together and are looking forward to their continued growth and expansion in the years to come. HFM

Duane started in the furniture business back in 1996 as a sales consultant with Rhodes Furniture in Atlanta, GA. He quickly rose up the corporate ladder reaching the position of Vice President of Sales with Drexel Heritage. Over the years, Duane has been passionate about bringing the best value to his customers. When asked how his stores have remained so successful over the years he says “Value, quality and styling. It’s great to have good value, but if it’s not something the customer is interested in, it’s pretty much a moot point. It has to be equally combined with exceptional quality and styling. There is a fine balancing act when it comes to these three critical ingredients and it all boils down to our customers’ needs, wants and desires. We are continuously trying to find out what they want and then work hard to exceed their expectations in providing it.” After the economy was hit pretty hard a few years back, Duane and Rick identified a need to introduce a more modest price point into the

THE LION’S DEN From the mid-1960’s through 1970, Kim Sigmon recalls running through the Ethan Allen furniture factory plant in Maiden, NC, where her father David worked long days and nights to support his loving family at home. Kim remembers watching the factory workers with curiosity while furniture was being upholstered and wood was being finished all around her. She still reminisces about the sounds and the smells of that factory. It makes her smile to remember spending all that time with her father and being around every aspect of furniture. Little did she know, her exposure to this factory would become such a major influence throughout the rest of her life. Kim’s mom Barbara always had a passion for 42

fine furniture and a deep love for lion statues, so in 1998, it was no surprise that when Kim opened up her own furniture business, she

would call it The Lion’s Den in loving memory of her dear mother Barbara who passed away from cancer just three years prior. Kim had several people who inspired and mentored her along the way, exposing her to a world of exquisite antiques, solid Mahogany designs and traditional fine furniture. She continues to seek out unique products that set her store apart from everyone else. Today, The Lion’s Den specializes in traditional and solid Mahogany furnishings, porcelain keepsakes, bronze statues, unique lamps, lamp shades and antiques. Kim hand selects all of her products and looks forward to seeing her customers light up when they find that perfect piece for their home. HFM 800-462-MART

AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP INSIDE HICKORY PARK FURNITURE GALLERIES VAUGHAN-BASSETT FURNITURE “As President of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hickory Furniture Mart and Hickory Park Furniture Galleries for choosing to share our furniture with the world. Every piece of our furniture is proudly made in the USA by the 600 craftsmen and craftswomen in the Virginia mountains. We take tremendous pride in the fact that our company ‘took the road less travelled’ by continuing to make all of our furniture here in America. And by purchasing American Made furniture, our customers should feel good knowing that they will receive American craftsmanship, American quality and that their purchase will

support their neighbors, create jobs in America and enhance our American economy. We replace every tree used to make our furniture through an innovative tree replacement program we developed with the Virginia Department of Forestry. All of the lumber used to make our furniture comes from within a day’s drive of our factories, which helps create a small carbon footprint related to the transportation of our materials, and of course, we stringently follow every environmental regulation. We value our partnership with Hickory Furniture Mart and Hickory Park Furniture Galleries and feel privileged to serve their customers with our American Made products.” ~ Doug Bassett, President

Thanks to our locally sourced material and production, we avoid oil-intensive shipping, deforestation and the unmitigated pollution that’s allowed with overseas production.

In 2012, we won the furniture industry’s Sage Award for our innovative approach to sustainability. We are a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and have earned Silver Exemplary Status. Simply stated, we care equally about our products, our people and the environment.” ~ Gat Caperton, Owner & CEO

OUTLETS OFFER INSTANT GRATIFICATION, SAVINGS AND IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for years as one of North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and design resources. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is ordered), private galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and sold immediately off the floor “as is”). Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 % off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one-of-a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers or customers have canceled. New outlet product arrives direct from factories weekly so outlet 54

inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, do not wait to buy it since most outlets are not able to hold product for you and sales are made on a first come basis. Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is not likely that the same exact piece will show up in their inventory again. Most customers enjoy mixing and matching outlet items with custom product. The savings found on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you want to place on another piece of furniture from a retail showroom. If you find out at the last minute that you will be entertaining family and need to finish furnishing that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up additional items quickly. Outlets are also

invaluable to customers who have experienced a natural disaster. Unfortunately victims of natural disasters often find themselves in need of furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically out of stock or backlogged with so much unexpected demand coming in at the same time. Our outlets and retail showrooms will work together to offer additional discounts and request expedited delivery options for entire communities affected by these types of natural disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms with quality furniture for much less. Stop by and visit all of the outlets and showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire year. HFM 800-462-MART

AMISH OAK & CHERRY Eddie Bumgarner was raised in Sawmills, NC and always had a love for old cars. In his youth, when he wasn’t admiring old cars, he was working at Franklin Furniture, which was a local furniture wholesaler.

continued to run his business in Lenoir, while Eddie continued to run his business in Hickory. Two short years later in 2009, Eddie and Misty made yet another move inside the Mart, expanding their showroom space to nearly 30,000 square feet and featuring a total of 165 Amish builders. They also added several local North Carolina upholstery manufacturers to the mix.

In 2000, Eddie and his cousin Ronnie, who also had worked in the furniture industry, decided to go into the furniture business together. They decided to focus on handcrafted Amish furniture because they liked its premium quality and craftsmanship and there were not a lot of Amish furniture retailers in the industry at that time. They opened up their new business along Hwy. 321 and started buying product from a handful of Amish builders. Those builders quickly told their friends and other Amish builders how much they enjoyed working with Eddie and Ronnie and the number of Amish builders continued to grow until finally Eddie and Ronnie decided they needed a second location in order to display all the additional products they now offered. They wanted to be in a location where customers appreciated the fine craftsmanship of their Amish builders, so in 2002 they opened up a second showroom, which was 5,000 square feet, inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Eddie brought his daughter Misty in to manage the

Hickory showroom and they continued to expand, adding more and more Amish builders each year. In 2005, a much larger space opened up inside the Mart and they doubled their size moving into a 10,000 square foot showroom. Then in 2007, Eddie and Ronnie dissolved their partnership and Ronnie

Amish Oak & Cherry proudly represents only American Made products throughout their entire showroom. They strongly believe in supporting American builders, manufacturers and their families. Family is extremely important to both Eddie and Misty. In fact Misty and her husband Jeremy welcomed their adorable twins Sadie and Charleigh into the family on July 28, 2015 and they have already been introduced to the family business by sharing an office with their mom since day one. They are the light of Eddie and his wife Sandy’s lives and they feel very blessed to have their grandchildren eventually carry on their legacy by introducing a new generation of customers to a third generation of Amish furniture retailers. RESOURCE DESIGN Larry Spierer first met his wife Jaye in Miami when he was working as a special education teacher and she was working as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. They would marry about a year later and move to Chicago where Larry had accepted a job offer with Saks Fifth Avenue in their leasing division and Jaye transferred with Delta. Larry’s grandfather, was the president of a high-end leather and fur business. During one of their visits, Larry’s grandfather convinced him to work in the business. He would go on to teach Larry everything he knew about the finest leathers, furs and fabrics around. At the same time, Larry’s mother Terry and step-father Lou owned a local factory in 800-462-MART

Conover, NC called Regency Home Fashions. They sold fabrics and produced bedding for some of the well-known retail chains like JC Penny, Sears and Fingerhut. It was Larry’s mother Terry who had the idea that Hickory Furniture Mart really needed a good fabric store so she and Lou decided to open up Resource Design in the late 80’s. Then in the early 90’s, Larry and Jaye decided to move to Hickory, NC so Larry could work with his stepfather Lou and be closer to his mother. After Terry’s unexpected passing only a year later, Larry and Jaye were asked to step in and help run Resource Design. Resource Design has now been in business for nearly 30 years. Neither Larry nor Jaye could have ever imagined that they would

end up running one of the largest and most diverse fabric, hardware and wall covering resources within the Carolinas. They stepped in to help out on a temporary basis, and ended up growing it into the successful business it is today. HFM hickoryfurniture.com
