Planning a trip to
Israel?
Here are a few tips to keep in mind before booking your ticket, as well as an overview of some of the leading carriers to the Holy Land and of major travel websites that can help facilitate the process. Flights to Israel depart from several major cities in the United States every day (with the exception of El Al, which does not fly on the Sabbath). All flights arrive at, and depart from Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, located midway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The duration of the flight is between 12-16 hours. Tickets are generally cheaper during the winter, while prices peak in summer, but special offers and deals can always be found. Ticket prices usually range from $700-1000, depending on the season. You can use any of the price comparison websites listed below to ensure you have secured the best vacation price for yourself and your family.

The Airline of theJewish People We all know that EL AL is the most secure, as well as one of the safest carriers in the world. But the thing that makes it so unique, says Offer Gat, CEO of EL AL in North and Central America, is that fact that once on board an EL AL plane you simply feel at home. “EL AL is, without a doubt, the best airline offering nonstop flights between the USA and Israel,” says CEO of EL AL in North and Central America, Offer Gat. And indeed, when it comes to Israel, the national carrier is probably the best way to go: EL AL offers the most nonstop flights between New York (JFK/ Newark) and Israel as well as the only nonstop service from Los Angeles. Only EL AL has First Class service on nonstop flights between the USA and Israel. EL AL is also a noteworthy contributor to Israeli tourism in general, with its North American operations being one of the main factors in this arena. Mr. Gat, tell us a little bit about EL AL’s activity in the United States. “First of all, it is important to note that EL AL plays a key role in advancing tourism to Israel, and is second only to the Ministry of Tourism in promoting travel to the country. What distinguishes us from other airlines is our ability to develop new routes and new markets. Once new lines are established, other companies habitually tap into EL AL’s success and begin operations to the same destinations. “EL AL has also recently identified a new market in the USA - the Evangelical Christian community, which we believe represents huge touristic potential. We are currently investing significant efforts in reaching out to this target audience. “Furthermore, EL AL operates numerous sales offices throughout the continent, including in places that the airline does not fly to. These agencies work to generate travel from such major cities as Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, DC among both the Jewish 6| The Jewish Travel
and Christian communities.” According to Gat, EL AL is particularly aware of the need to offer attractive deals to the budget-minded tourist not only during the low-season, but also in summertime when families tend to travel more. “Last summer we developed a special package for families and offered very significant discounts on tickets for every child. We plan to have a similar deal next summer as well,” says Gat. “Another aspect we are trying to promote is membership in EL AL’s frequent flyer club, which is the most rewarding of its kind in the world,” Gat adds. “We are currently looking into the possibility of improving rewards for people who only travel once or twice a year, families with many children and so on.” Gat also notes that EL AL will soon begin offering dynamic and flexible vacation packages through its website. What is it that distinguishes EL AL from its competitors? “Well, there are several
aspects that make EL AL unique and that set it apart from other airlines. First of all, it is by far the most secure airline in the world, as well as one of the safest, and it has an amazing record in this area. Secondly, EL AL is the national airline of Israel and flying with us provides all travelers with a genuine Israeli experience. When you get on an EL AL plane, you feel as if you are already in Israel, 10 hours before you have actually landed. “The third element, which has become more pronounced in recent years, is the fact that EL AL is currently considered the best carrier that offers nonstop flights to Israel. There is a consensus that the service and product EL AL provides are superior to any other competing airline. EL AL offers better service on board, improved customer service, high-quality freshly prepared kosher food and an upgraded fleet.” National mission When he talks about the things that make EL AL such an Israeli brand name, Gat points to the carrier’s
recent involvement in the Israeli government’s relief efforts in Haiti, following the devastating earthquake in the country. EL AL landed in Haiti shortly after the disaster with dozens of medical teams and tons of emergency supplies to assist with rescue and salvage efforts. Two EL AL aircraft, a jumbo 747-400 and one 777, carried more than 80 tons of supplies along with 229 passengers consisting of medical personnel, search-and-rescue teams as well as a K9 rescue squad. As the national airline of Israel, EL AL consistently provides support anywhere in the world during times of need, as evidenced by assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia and the rescue mission during the war between Georgia and Russia. “This is what makes EL AL not only Israel’s national airline, but also the airline of the Jewish people,” Gat says proudly.

your Travel guide to israel- car rental
Renting a car in israel Traveling to Israel? Here is your guide to renting a car in the country. Israel is a small country and exploring it by car is probably the most convenient, cost-effective and fast way to go. Car rental is an easy and simple procedure, and both local and international companies regularly offer good deals on short and long-term rentals. Most international car rental companies and local companies have offices in the large cities and at Ben Gurion Airport. It is recommended to reserve a car in advance from abroad. To rent a car in Israel the driver must be over 21 years of age, and must hold a valid international driver’s license and an international credit card. Renting a car from a long-established, known firm will guarantee a carefree vacation, as most companies will go a long way to meet the needs and desires of their clients.
Few Car Rental Tips: * Make sure you order the type of car best suited to your needs in terms of size, model and additional equipment. * Make sure the age of the driver is compatible with the type of car ordered. * Gas: It is recommended to return the car with a full tank of gas, as companies usually charge extra for refueling. Make sure you know which petrol type is used for your car before leaving the branch. * It is advisable to return the car by the same hour of the day it was picked up, so as to avoid additional charges.
Shlomo Sixt Operated by the Shlomo Group, Shlomo Sixt, which represents the international Sixt firm, is one of the leading car hire companies in Israel. The company operates a vehicle fleet of some 13,000 cars and has 26 branches from Kiryat Shmona in the north to Eilat in the south, and offers round-theclock service. The company also has branches in Paris and New York. www.shlomo.co.il / 972-3-929-7606/7783
* Keep a copy of the rental contract with you at all times. * A deductible clause is usually included in the rental contract, and applies in cases of theft or damage to the vehicle. It is therefore recommended to look into the possibility of purchasing separate insurance that offers better coverage. * When picking up the car, it is advisable to carefully check the vehicle for any existing damages and make sure a sales representative includes them in the rental form. Additionally, upon dropping-off the car, have an agent examine the car and approve that it has been returned undamaged. * Before renting a car, get updated on traffic laws and regulations in your destination country. Parking tickets and fines are the customer’s responsibility. Provided by Doron Viktor, Car rental Division Manager at Shlomo Sixt

your Travel guide to israel- public transportation
Getting around Public Transportation and Domestic Flights in Israel When they first arrive in Israel, first-time visitors are very often astonished by the number of vehicles traveling on this small country’s freeways. According to the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection, Israel has one of the highest car densities per paved road in the world. This fact, combined with the justified reputation Israeli drivers have gained for being a bit reckless, contributes to the decision by many tourists not to rent a car and travel throughout the country by public transportation. Getting around with public transportation is easy and convenient, and will get you to almost any destination for a reasonable price. For inter-city trips taking a bus or a train will usually prove far cheaper than a taxi.

Arkia Israel Airlines was founded in 1949 as Israel Inland Airlines when it became clear that there was demand for a local airline to connect Tel Aviv with different regions of the new nation of Israel, especially with Eilat, Israel’s important seaport on the Gulf of Aqaba. Over the years the company has expanded and it is currently Israel’s second largest airline operating scheduled domestic and international services as well as charter flights to destinations in Western Europe and across the Mediterranean. The Tel Aviv-based carrier operates a large number of domestic flights daily, to a wide range of destinations, including: Eilat, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ben Gurion Airport and the northern towns of Rosh Pina and Kiryat Shmona. It’s possible to fly from Kiryat Shmona in the North to Eilat in the South in under two hours. The Company continues to expand its operations and to acquire new companies in order to position itself as an important and leading factor in the aviation and tourism Industries internationally. The grant of an operating license to perform scheduled flight services to Jordan marked the turning point of Arkia’s evolution into an official flag carrier for the performance of scheduled international flights. Insurance for all Ron Reuven, one of the United States’ top financial advisors, has come up with an innovative concept for providing medical insurance to non-US citizens or to US citizens traveling abroad that he believes will revolutionize the field of health coverage in the US and around the world. The young and highly successful CEO and president of Reuven Enterprises, explains how by “cutting out the middlemen” and working directly with insurance giant Lloyd’s of London his company is able to offer a low-cost, extensive-coverage policy to its clients. What is it that makes International Health Insurance unique? This has been a four-year project in the making and was officially launched in 2009. Reuven Enterprises is proud to offer international health insurance backed by Lloyd’s of London. The program that we have created is truly the best insurance in the world and will cover our clients all over the world. There are several key aspects to the policy that distinguish us from the traditional insurance companies in the United States and around the world. First and foremost, unlike many insurance agencies that sell you traditional policies through UnitedHealth/Oxford, BlueCross that are dramatically more expensive, we offer a product that is directly from the source, Lloyd’s. What I mean by that, and why it makes a difference to our clients, is because it brings the cost of the insurance much lower. Our policy is directly from Lloyd’s, so the middlemen are eliminated and the cost savings are transferred to our clients by providing prices that are 40% to 70% cheaper than our competitors. It is an extraordinary difference, especially when you consider the fact that our insurance is through the largest insurance market in the world, and the fact that we have 490,000 in our PPO network in the United States, as well as the ability to use any doctor or hospital outside of the United States, adding millions more choices to our clients. This also eliminates the need for our clients to ever buy travelers insurance for any of their trips. What is your primary target audience? Who would you recommend this insurance to? Our insurance is only for expatriates or foreign national companies, entities, individuals and families (people that live outside of their home country). It could be 12 | The Jewish Travel
an Israeli living in the United States or an American that lives abroad. Unfortunately, the US rules on insurance practice limit our ability to lower the insurance cost to Americans living in the United States. If the Obama Administration really wanted to fix the insurance industry, they would allow us to sell this insurance to everyone living in the US, and we would be able to save this country billions by making real comprehensive health insurance affordable again. Our clients range from young families and college students, to major corporations with international offices and government entities such as embassies and consulates.
States have limited options. Some expatriates traveling the US still have some supplemental coverage provided to them by their home country, but it is limited if the service will be provide in the US. So it’s not very comprehensive or cost effective in the long run. If they are legally here and have a job, then they can qualify for domestic insurance, but have to pay a lot of money for it like everyone else in the country. But the illegal immigrants do not have any options because they cannot get legal employment, eliminating their ability to get insurance even if they have the money
A low-cost, extensive health insurance available to anyone in the US and around the world? “Many people ask, ‘What’s the catch?’ but there isn’t any,” says entrepreneur Ron Reuven. “We simply offer an amazing product.” What does the coverage include?
Coverage includes: Hospital, prescription drugs, emergency and intensive care, mental health disorders, ambulance, organ transplants, emergency medical evacuation, emergency reunion, repatriation of remains and much, much more. Some of the features are so unique, that the first question people ask us is, “what’s the catch?” There isn’t any. We have an amazing product that has really helped so many people finally get nsurance they can rely on without having to spend an arm and leg for it. What are the current insurance solutions available to non-citizens in the US, and how is the health insurance you provide superior to them? Unfortunately many of the expatriates (non-US citizens) living in the United

In so many words, whether you are a legal or an illegal immigrant is irrelevant, and you and your family will be able to qualify for this.

your Travel guide to israel- Phone service
Don’t forget to call A new and innovative technology makes telephone communication between the US and Israel simple and easy on the pocket Making arrangements for a visit to Israel or staying in touch with friends and family there can often prove to be a costly and complicated business. Dialing from the United States usually involves passwords and pin numbers and the phone bill promises to be as long and painful as the process itself. A relatively new technology, which has been introduced into the global market in recent years, is that of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or internet telephony, which essentially denotes communication services transported via the internet. VoIP phone companies provide inbound and outbound calling with Direct Inbound Dialing. Many offer unlimited domestic calling, and some to other countries as well, for a flat monthly fee that dramatically reduces phone cost. Using VoIP services usually requires the customer to have a landline and install an adapter with broadband. Once the equipment is in place, the subscriber can make as many calls as he wishes and to almost any destination (depending on the

package provided) without worrying about the dreaded phone bill at the end of the month. One company that offers such services is the Israeli-based BeLowCall, which provides customers with their own Israeli number for incoming calls, and an access number for outgoing calls, at the price of a local landline call. The Israeli number enables customers to receive calls from Israel at a price of a local landline call for the caller, and the company directs the call to the customer’s home or cell phone. This service is free of charge with the purchase of a monthly package. For outgoing calls, the customer needs to dial a local access number at a price of a local landline call and then dial to Israel. The cost of the service varies according to the chosen package. Each monthly plan includes a BeLowCall number - a local number from Israel or other locations (in the United States or other countries - for an additional charge).
carrier, renting a phone at the airport or through a car rental company and using the same cell phone service the locals use. Roaming enables customers to maintain their US number and remain available to all callers. However, this service will usually increase calling fees and may also require the customer to rent a handset that will work with the technology used outside the US, for an additional price. Renting a phone at the airport or through a car rental company is the perfect last-minute solution for those who did not think about a cell phone before going abroad. While the rental of the handset will usually prove quite cheap, the per-minute charge will in most cases be significantly high and should be carefully evaluated
beforehand. A third option is to become a customer of the local phone company in the country you visit. Under this option the customer will pay the same rates the locals pay. This is the least expensive option because there are no roaming charges and no marked-up per minute rates or daily minimum charges. A service called Soft Landing, which is offered by BeLowCall, enables US customers to rent a cellular phone for short durations and receive both an Israeli SIM card and an American number for the newly rented phone. Friends and relatives from the US are this way able to call the customer at the price of a local call for them, as BeLowCall directs the calls from the American number.
Booking a hotel in Israel The Leading Hotels
So, you have booked your flight to Israel and already know where you wish to go and what you want to see during your visit. Now is the time to decide on where you will stay while you are there. It is important to know that the hospitality business in Israel has come a long way in the last two decades, and the country now boasts a large number of top-quality hotel chains geared to meet the needs of any type of customer. Before booking a hotel, take time to figure out what your specific needs and desired are: • Location: Knowing that you are looking for a hotel in Jerusalem, for instance, is not quite enough. Ask yourself whether it is important for you to stay in close proximity to the Old City, the city center or rather to the entrance to the capital, nearby the main traffic routes leading into it. • Character: Are you travelling with your family and looking for a childrenfriendly place where kids are welcome and offered special activities and facilities? Or are you a businessperson seeking a professional, formal and quiet environment to conduct meetings at and work from? • Tastes: Are you looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun, or perhaps an action-packed adventure in the wild? Do you expect to be pampered, enjoy spa treatments and fine cuisine, or are basic amenities and a rustic atmosphere enough for you? • Budget: What portion of your budget for this trip do you plan to spend on accommodation? Answering these questions will help determine the type of hotel you would choose for your trip to Israel. 16 | The Jewish Travel

The name Rimonim, Hebrew for “pomegranates,” symbolizes the beauty and goodness that the Land of Milk and Honey has become known for. The hotels stay true to the spirit of the name, providing customers with a special, sensual experience of the country’s tastes and sites. The Rimonim chain is run by the Israel Land Development Corporation (ILDC) through a subsidiary: ILD Hotels, which has full or partial ownerships of the hotels. It employs about 500 workers throughout the country.
The ultimate Israeli experience’ So what is it exactly that makes the Rimonim chain so unique? According to the chain’s chairwoman, Smadar Nimrodi-Rinot, the Rimonim hotels excel in two aspects: character and service. “All the hotels are situated in breathtaking locations and put emphasis on creating a serene and calming atmosphere,” says Nimrodi-Rinot. “We operate according to a management strategy that advocates a superior level of service and quality, in order to provide our guests with the best vacation experience possible. “Our number one objective is to address the needs, wishes and expectations of each and every customer,” she adds. Nimrodi-Rinot explains that the chain strives to give guests a genuine “Israeli vacation,” one that is strongly linked to the country and its beautiful landscapes. Accordingly, the hotels offer an excellent accommodation option in special, picturesque places such as Safed, Nazareth, Neve Ativ (Mount Herman)

and the Kinneret. What particular advantages does the chain offer to American tourists? “I think that the strategic location of all the hotels is one of our strongest selling points, both in terms of the proximity to attractive travel destinations and attractions, and the beauty of the area and its surroundings. “Tourists from throughout the United States visit our hotels every year, and every year they extend their vacations at our hotels. We welcome our many returning guests and encourage new ones to explore Israel and enjoy the ultimate Israeli experience with us.”
And what’s next?
“The chain is expected to continue expanding until the end of 2010. A new hotel, the Shalom Hotel in Jerusalem (which has changed its name to Rimonim Jerusalem) has recently joined the chain, and is currently undergoing renovations in order to adjust it to the standards of the Rimonim chain.”

Israel’s third largest city and one of its prettiest, Haifa has a lot to offer visitors. It has the country’s largest port, a particularly active beach and is the home of the World Center of the Bahai Faith. Surrounded by abundant nature sites, the city contains an interesting mix of modern neighborhoods and older districts; churches and mosques; mountain and sea. Haifa is a multi-faceted city with several unique characteristics making it an attractive place to visit. Its proximity to the sea and its active port contribute to its prominence. The bustling port area draws merchants, shoppers and tourists. The beautiful beaches are popular for sports and recreation, and are filled with people during summer weekends. In addition, because of their excellent surfing conditions, the beaches serve many of Israel’s top sailing enthusiasts and host sailing competitions and other sporting events. With residents from the three largest religions as well as from various minority faiths, Haifa is also a symbol of outstanding co-existence and tolerance. Nine percent of the population consists of Arabs (Moslems and Christians) who reside mostly in three neighborhoods: Khalisa, Abas and the famous Wadi Nisnas whose charming 34 | The Jewish Travel
alleyways have turned it into a tourist spot. The annual Holiday of Holidays marking the city’s special lifestyle is held there. At the foot of the Bahai Gardens lies the picturesque German Colony, founded in the nineteenth century by German Templars who came to establish a Christian community in the Holy Land. The pretty stone houses lend charm and romance to the neighborhood and reflect its special qualities. Some of the houses have been preserved, and some still have the names of the original residents etched onto them. The German Colony attracts many visitors, and it is worth wandering through it to enjoy its beauty and get a sense of its colorful past. Those interested in experiencing the city by foot will enjoy one of the “Step Tours”, four marked walking routes which begin on Yefe Nof
(Panorama) Street and proceed down to the beach area. Other options are nature routes which descend the mountain along one of the rivers – Ezov, Akhuza, Lotem and Si’akh. From the coast, one can go up the mountain via the cable car or the Carmelit, Israel’s only subway (underground) which ends at the Carmel district. Here, one should visit Gan ha’Em (“Mother’s Park”) and walk along the Louis Promenade with its spectacular view of the city which hugs the sea. Haifa also boasts many institutions devoted to culture, art and science which offer an array of festivals and activities. Several types of museums are located in Haifa, including: the Dagon Grain Silo; the National Maritime Museum; the National Museum of Science and Technology; the Haifa Museum of Art; the Clandestine Immigration and Naval Museum; the Rail-
way Museum; the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art; the Reuben and Edith Hecht Museum; and the Israel Oil Industry Museum. The annual Haifa Film Festival features high quality local and international films, drawing those in the profession (directors, screenwriters, actors, etc.) as well as thousands of visitors who fill the streets and the auditoriums. Haifa is also home to the Technion, Israel’s first institution of higher education, and to the University of Haifa, attended by students from Israel and overseas. The university is situated near the Carmel Nature Reserve, known for its year-round views of greenery and its intoxicating beauty. The Khai-Bar Wildlife Preserve was established within the Carmel Nature Reserve to reintroduce nearly extinct animals to nature. Throughout the Carmel are hundreds of hiking, automobile and bicycle paths, and amazing charming spots waiting to be discovered. Courtesy of the Israel Ministry of Tourism www.goisrael.com

Tiberias (Tverya) is synonymous with vacations in Israel. Here one can enjoy a variety of activities in a city that offers wonderful opportunities to mix relaxation with nature, history with contemporary attractions, serene quiet with active water sports, and pilgrimage sites with unique tourist attractions. Located on the shores of Lake Kineret, Tiberias is Israel’s lowest city at 200 meters below sea level, and it attracts thousands of tourists and travelers. Visitors discover a lively tourist city offering a variety of attractions and activities for every age. The city has 30 hotels including luxury hotels alongside bed and breakfasts and youth hostels. Most hotels are located on the beach and offer vacationers a real treat. Expansive lawns, a water park for the whole family, restaurants and bars, and extreme water sports are just a sampling of guest offerings. There is also a variety of hotels in Tiberias’s Old City near the lake and marina. The marina offers boat rides on Lake Kineret as well as the enjoyable sunsets. The romantic promenade sprawls along the lakeside near the marina including many cafes and restaurants that specialize in freshwater fish straight from the lake. From the Old City and 36 | The Jewish Travel
the promenade, the central boardwalk stretches up to downtown. This is a lively commercial center teeming with varied restaurants, cafes, overflowing pubs, ice cream parlors and souvenir shops. In the summer, the area is particularly crowded and bazaars are accompanied by contemporary music. Near the boardwalk, colorful horsedrawn carriages offer visitors a slightly different tour of the town. On the other side of the boardwalk is Tiberias’s famed fish market. The fishing industry is highly developed and dozens of fishing boats head onto the lake every morning, returning brimming with fresh fish for sale at the local market. Close to the market is a popular falafel complex that attracts thousands of hungry visitors seeking the hot, fresh, tasty morsels. Falafel stand owners will be happy to offer taste tests in the hopes you choose their wares for your lunch.
Across from the falafel stands is a large municipal auditorium in which events, celebrations and concerts are open to the public. Tiberias also offers the Dona Gracia Museum, which tells the story of Gracia Nasi who used her considerable wealth to save many Jewish refugees of the Spanish Inquisition and build a Jewish city in Tiberias. The castle is a museum, divided into halls that tell her story and that of the period through rich visuals, scenery and the sounds of the Renaissance, which offer a royal experience. South of the Old City is Hamat Tiberias National Park, which includes seventeen hot springs whose 60-degree Celsius waters are infused with approximately 100 minerals with unique therapeutic qualities that can be found only here. The site’s healing capabilities have been known for 2,000 years and the baths have attracted people since time immemorial. The waters
from the springs feed the renowned Tiberias Springs spa. The spa offers several thermomineral pools, luxurious body treatments and unique health treatments as well as the quiet atmosphere and the beautiful view of Lake Kineret. The Kineret has attracted people for thousands of years, offering both a source of water and a livelihood. History has rendered both the Kineret area and Tiberias itself important to both Christians and Jews. Herod Antipas founded the city in 17-22 C.E., naming it after his patron, the Roman Emperor Tiberius. In the second through tenth centuries, Tiberias was the largest Jewish city in the Galilee, the Jewish people’s political and religious hub, as well as the center of Jewish spiritual creativity. Tiberias is attractive all around the year, with natural beauty, pastoral beaches and a variety of activities in the city and its surroundings. Tel Aviv, often called “the city that never stops,” was the first modern Jewish city built in Israel, and is the country’s economic and cultural center. It is a lively, active city with entertainment, culture and art, festivals, and a rich night life. Situated on a 14-kilometer-long strip on the Mediterranean seacoast, Tel Aviv extends beyond the Yarkon River to the north and the Ayalon River to the east. Hundreds of thousands of workers, visitors, tourists, and partygoers move about the city each day until the early hours of the morning, seeking out the city’s nightclubs, restaurants, and centers of entertainment.
Tel Aviv began its history in Jaffa (Yafo) - the ancient 3,000year-old adjoining city that lies to its southwest. The current Old City of Jaffa was built during the Ottoman Empire and its stone houses and narrow alleyways now house the picturesque artists’ quarter and tourist center. Among the main attractions of Old Jaffa are Gan HaPisga - the Summit Garden- with its restaurants, galleries, shops with Judaica, and unique atmosphere, the seaside promenade and walls of the old city, the visitors’ center in the old courtyard, and the fishing port. In 1909 sixty-six Jewish families who resided in Jaffa established the first neighborhood of what would later become the city of Tel Aviv. The neighborhood, called “Akhuzat Bayit” (homestead) was originally within Jaffa. In 1910 it was renamed Tel Aviv, and the neighborhood began to expand. There are many buildings in the neighborhoods 38 | The Jewish Travel
surrounding Akhuzat Bayit that were built in the eclectic style that was popular in Tel Aviv in the 1920s. Clusters of buildings built in this style can be found on Nakhlat Binyamin and in the “heart of the city” - the triangle between Shenkin Street, Rothschild Boulevard, and Allenby Street. Other new neighborhoods were added until it eventually became the center of the Yishuv - the Jewish settlement in Palestine at the time. It was in Tel Aviv, on May 14 1948, that David Ben Gurion declared the independence of the State of Israel Tel Aviv is Israel’s center for culture and entertainment. The city has more than 20 museums, the most important of which are the Land of Israel (HaAretz) Museum and the Tel Aviv Art Museum. Other Tel Aviv museums include the Museum of the Diaspora, the Israel Defense Forces History Museum, the Etzel Museum, the Haganah Museum, the Pal-
mach Museum, The Lekhi Museum, and the Nachum Guttman Museum. The city hosts the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israeli Opera Company, as well as most of the national dance and theater companies. Tel Aviv is also the national center for night life and entertainment and is filled with night clubs featuring music of all types, dancing, restaurants, pubs, coffee houses, discotheques, movie theaters, auditoriums, and concert halls. The beachfront of Tel Aviv has bathing beaches and a romantic waterfront promenade. Tel Aviv’s important historical sites include Bialik House, Ben Gurion House, Dizengoff House, the old cemetery on Trumpeldor Street, and Reuven House. Nature lovers can visit the garden at Abu Kabir, HaYarkon Park, and the Botanical Gardens near Tel Aviv University. Families with chil-
dren can enjoy an action-filled amusement park. The city has several plazas, the best known being Rabin Square, HaMedina Square, and Dizengoff Circle. Eleven of the city’s churches, monasteries, and mosques, such as Saint Peter’s Church and the Franciscan Monastery, are located in Jaffa. Vacationers in Tel Aviv can lodge at any of the dozens of hotels, boarding houses, and youth hostels scattered throughout the city. These offer every type of accommodation ranging from luxurious rooms to simple, pleasant lodging. Tel Aviv is also a business and trade center. There are colorful and bustling markets such as the flea market in Jaffa, the Carmel market, the HaTikva Market, and Levinsky market. There are also modern shopping malls such as Dizengoff Center and Azrieli Center, and important business centers for high-tech companies, realtors, and the stock market. All these have made Tel Aviv the business capital of Israel and an international center for conventions, exhibitions, and conferences. Courtesy of the Israel Ministry of Tourism www.goisrael.com

How far does one have to descend to reach the Dead Sea? About 400 meters below sea level. How deep is this salty lake? Almost the same (in the northern section). Fascinating? Absolutely! Every detail about the Dead Sea is fascinating. Here are a few more facts: The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth in any land mass (417 meters below sea level, to be exact). The quantity of water that evaporates from it is greater than that which flows into it, such that this body of water has the highest concentration of salt in the world (340 grams per liter of water). It is called the Dead Sea because its salinity prevents the existence of any life forms in the lake. That same salt, on the other hand, provides tremendous relief to the many ailing visitors who come here on a regular basis to benefit from its healing properties. All these and more make the Dead Sea so fascinating, so different and so interesting. The Dead Sea can also be called “the lowest health spa in the world.” Sea salts are produced from the southern section for industry, and in the northern section promote tourism and good health. The composition of the salts and minerals in the water are what make it so unique and beneficial for the body. The sea bed also has deposits of black mud that is easy to spread on the body and provides the skin with nourishing minerals. As if that were not enough, the bromide in the air is also beneficial to the body’s systems, 40 | The Jewish Travel
thus making the Dead Sea a provider for good health and healing for vacationers from all over the world. It is a truly priceless national treasure. The western shore (inside Israel’s borders) is dotted with organized beaches and bathing areas that provide convenient access to the water. Beside two of the therapeutic beaches (Neve Zohar and Ein Bokek) large tourism centers have been established, providing the most pampering tourism services. You will find dozens of hotels, hostels and guest houses, restaurants and shopping centers, as well as surprising tourism enterprises that offer a wide range of challenging activities (jeep and bicycle tours, camel tours and Bedouin hospitality, rappelling and more), alongside art and cultural activities (galleries and artists’ studios), and of course the unique agriculture, adapted to the local climate.
The Dead Sea is on the edge of the Judean Desert, a hot, barren region at the foot of Ha-He’etekim cliff, which has also become an important center of desert tourism. The coastline is dotted with many springs, surrounded by wild plant life. The special combination that has formed in this place, between desert landscapes and oasies with plentiful water, plants and animals, attracts both the eye and the heart and draws many tourists to sites such as Mt. Sdom, Nakhal Darga, the Ein Gedi nature reserve and the Einot Tsukim (Ein Fashkha) reserve. Alongside these breathtaking natural sites there are also some purely historic sites of considerable importance in Israel’s past, which preserve the ancient charm of this area. Among the most prominent sites are the Massada fortress, ancient Ein Gedi and the Qumran cave site where ancient scrolls were
found, including the Dead Sea scrolls, which offer some insights into early Christianity and the Essenes sect that lived at the site and is considered the beginning of Christian monasticism. The northwestern region of the Dead Sea is also a pilgrimage site for Christians who have visited here over the centuries especially during the Easter season. From here they go to the Jordan (the traditional site of Jesus’ baptism), and many still follow this tradition in our times. A tour of the Dead Sea region would not be complete without a visit to the amazing monasteries built on the cliff walls. In the fourth century ascetism became popular among Christians. Many believers wanted to devote themselves to God and the Judean Desert became a ideal destination for monks, who built phenomenal monasteries, some of them carved into the stone faces of the desert cliffs. Among these monasteries are St. George, Quruntul, Khozeba and Mar Saba. Some of the monasteries are still operating and even welcome visitors, who can gain their own impressions of the intensity of the desert and its wild beauty. What has not already been said about the holiest city in the world, the city that has been united, the eternal city first built thousands of years ago, whose history can be heard in the whispering of the wind along the walls, where every stone tells a wondrous story of a city that has drawn millions of faithful pilgrims for thousands of years. Such is Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, the only city in the world that has 70 names of love and yearning, the city that in old maps appears at the center of the world and is still adored like a young bride. Jerusalem is a city of overwhelming emotions, a city that promises a religious and spiritual experience, excitement and pleasure, interesting tours and entertaining adventures. Here, alongside Jerusalem’s fascinating historic and archeological sites, there are amazingly modern tourist attractions for all lovers of culture, the arts, theater and music, architecture and gastronomic delights. At Jerusalem’s heart is the Old City, which is surrounded by a wall and divided into four quarters - Jewish, Armenian, Christian, and Muslim. Inside the walls are the important holy sites of the three major religions: the Western Wall, which is holy to the Jews, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount. The Western Wall plaza is visited by millions of worshipers. Here, at the base of the massive wall that is a remnant of the Holy Temple, prayers are offered and notes containing heartfelt wishes are wedged between the crevices.
ful botanical gardens and the hands-on interactive exhibits at the Bloomfield Science Museum. Since Jerusalem is a city that has become home to people from many different faiths, traditions and ethnic groups, the city’s culinary culture offers something for everyone. Alongside Bohemian gourmet restaurants you will find eateries where the food is cooked slowly over ancient stoves, coffee shops with style, ethnic restaurants, fast food stands and bars that come to life in the evening hours. In addition to an abundant variety of dining opportunities, Jerusalem also has many different types of tourist accommodations, from luxury hotels to inexpensive youth hostels.
If you are wondering how Jerusalem became such a center of religions and spirituality and a pilgrimage site for millions of tourists from around the world, the answer begins thousands of years ago. Jerusalem’s history is one of wars and struggles. Its strategic location attracted many nations that wanted to capture the city, and some of them did rule over it for various periods. This city has known war and peace, love and hate, riches and poverty, destruction and renewal, happiness and pain. According to Jewish tradition, the creation of the world began (5766 years ago) with the foundation stone on Mount Moriah (under the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount). This is where an important royal Can’anite city was built (about 4,000 years ago), and which was conquered from the
Jebusites by King David in 1004 BCE and became the capital of his kingdom and a holy city. David’s son Solomon built the First Temple and his descendents (Hezekiah, Zedekiah and the Judean Kings) continued to enlarge and fortify the city’s boundaries, and to build a water supply system (Hezekiah’s tunnel). These efforts paid off, and when King Sennacherib of Assyria besieged Jerusalem he could not subdue the city and withdrew. Only in 586 BCE did Nebuchadnezzar conquer the Jewish capital. The city was destroyed and most of its inhabitants exiled to Babylon. In 538 BCE Xerxes, the King of Persia, who has conquered Babylon, permitted the exiled Jews to return to Judea and Jerusalem, where they rebuilt the city and built the Second Temple. For 370 years Judea was an autonomous district, first under the Persians and then under the Greeks. After the Hasmonean Revolt in 168 BCE, Jerusalem again became the capital of a Kingdom, that later became under the rule of the Roman Empire. King Herod the Great further expanded the Temple in the years 73-4 BCE. At the end of the Second Temple period Jerusalem was a city of great social and religious tension. In 66 CE the Jews rebelled against the Roman Empire and took over Jerusalem. The suppression of this revolt ended in 70 CE, and the Romans, led by Titus, conquered the capital, destroyed the Temple completely and exiled the city’s inhabitants. For the next 60 years Jerusalem was desolate, until the Bar Kokhba Revolt, when the Jews returned for
a short while. In 135 CE, the Romans rebuilt and renamed the city Aelia Capitolina and barred the Jews from living there. After the Roman Empire accepted Christianity in 324 (and later became the Byzantine Empire), Jerusalem again became an important city. The site’s connected with Jesus’ life and death were located and declared holy, and many magnificent churches were built, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (the Church of the Resurrection) and the “Mother of all the Churches,” on Mt. Zion. In 638 the Muslims conquered Jerusalem and built the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa mosque over the next few centuries. Following the Muslim conquest the Jews returned to Jerusalem, and around the 10th century this city again became the spiritual capital for the Jews of the Land of Israel. The Crusaders also wanted to rule Jerusalem. They conquered the city in 1099, massacred the Jewish and Muslim residents and made Jerusalem their own capital. Less than 100 years later, in 1187, the Crusaders were defeated by Saladin in a battle at Khitin. At that time the Jews returned to Jerusalem and have been there ever since. In 1250 the Mamluk dynasty rose to power in Egypt and its rulers conquered this region and became the new lords of Jerusalem. In 1517 the Ottoman Empire spread to Jerusalem and for 400 years was under Turkish rule. During the first 100 years the city flourished and its walls were rebuilt. In the second half
of the 16th century, as the Ottoman Empire began to decline, so did Jerusalem’s fortunes. By the beginning of the 19th century Jerusalem was a small neglected city inside its walls, and only toward the end of the century (from 1860 onward), did the New City begin to grow, thanks to the generosity of British philanthropist Moshe Montifiore, who financed the construction of Mishkenot Sha’ananim. The success of this new neighborhood led to more neighborhoods being built outside the walls. More Jews began moving to Jerusalem, becoming a majority of the population in 1873. In 1917, with the start of the British Mandate period, Jerusalem retained its status as the capital of the land. When Israel was established in 1948, Jerusalem was declared the state capital, and all the major government institutions were built here. These including the Knesset (Israel’s parliament building), the Supreme Court and the various government offices. During the War of Independence, following bloody battles and ceasefire agreements, Jerusalem was left divided between Israel and Jordan, until the capital’s liberation in the Six Day War in 1967, when the two parts of the city were united and Jerusalem became Israel’s largest city. From the very beginning, Jerusalem has been the one and only, a unique city second to none in the whole world. Courtesy of the Israel Ministry of Tourism www.goisrael.com

The capital of the Negev, the Old City, the university, the Turkish railway station, and the Bedouin market represent only a part of the colorful mosaic offered by the city of Be’er Sheba, a city full of life and proud of itself, as you will be told by any of its 185,000 inhabitants. Be’er Sheba, spelt Beersheba in most English translations of the Bible, is a major crossroads whose potential was felt by Abraham, father of the Jewish people, who arrived here 3,700 years ago. He dug a well to water his flock, made a covenant of peace with Abimelech, the king of Gerar in those days, and the two swore allegiance to one another. “Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because there the two of them took an oath” (Genesis 21, Verse 21). To symbolize his ownership of the well, he planted a tamarisk tree. Thus the city of Be’er Sheba struck roots at that place and at that time. Abraham’s descendants continued to live here, in a place that was the cradle of monotheism. Be’er Sheba is located at the intersection of two ancient important international road junctions: The “Way of the Sea” (Via Maris) which extended along the shoreline in the west, and the King’s Highway (the Valley Route) 44 | The Jewish Travel
in the east. Consequently, the city is mentioned throughout biblical times as a wayside station, as a resting spot, as a border point and as a ritual center. Tel Be’er Sheba, five kilometers east of the city, is usually identified with biblical Be’er Sheba. The site is fascinating, and contains the ruins of a walled city from the Israelite monarchic period. Due to the wonderful finds there, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2005. In the Roman Period, the settlement spread to the area of present-day Be’er Sheba, and was located in the center of the Limes Palestinae, the Roman defense layout from Rafah (Rafi’akh) to the Dead Sea, which mainly consisted of fortresses built the borderline. When the Romans converted to Christianity, it served as the Episcopal residence (the residence of the Bishop) and several churches were built there. The Crusaders also built a fortress in the city, but when it was de-
stroyed it remained desolate for a long time. Modern-day Be’er Sheba was founded at the start of the twentieth century by the Ottomans, and was the only city that the Turks built in the Land of Israel. Remains of buildings from this period and from the time of the British Mandate can be seen in the Old City, located in the south of the city. These include the Governor’s House – the residence and office of the city’s governor, which was built in 1906 and today houses the Negev Museum of Art; the city’s first mosque also built in 1906; the Turkish railway station built during the First World War; the station manager’s house; the water tower that supplied the trains’ steam engines with water; the Saraya – the Government House (today the city’s police station); a public garden; and additional buildings that tell the fascinating story of Be’er Sheba under Turkish rule. The Jewish city was established in 1949. It developed
and turned into the center of the south and became the capital of the Negev. Today, it has museums, a zoo, historical sites, one of the largest universities in Israel, and on Thursdays – the famous Bedouin market. The market was officially opened in 1905, and became a weekly event where the Bedouins sold various wares. Nowadays, the market has modern stalls (footwear, clothing, etc) alongside authentic Bedouin stalls where you can buy unique items such as copper products, glassware, jewelry, beads and precious stones, as well as mats, carpets, cushions, and the like. The market is variegated, vibrant, exceedingly charming, and colorful. Another important hub is the Center for Ethiopian Craftsmanship where new immigrant women preserve the ancient handicraft traditions of Ethiopian Jewry as practiced in their home villages, and engage in modeling earthenware, embroidering, sculpting, and straw crafts. Over the years, the city of Eilat has become the ultimate resort city with hotels and beaches packed with thousands of Israeli vacationers and tourists from around the world, who come to relax in the country’s southernmost spot. In the winter it mainly attracts tourists from Europe who prefer vacations in a warmer and more pleasant climate while Israelis flock to the city in the summer. The secret of this little city’s charm is its special location in the northern end of the Bay of Eilat. The combination of a hot climate, a tropical sea and a breathtaking background of wild, bare granite mountains has turned it into a tourist gem all the year round. Eilat’s location made it strategically significant during the many historical periods in which it served as a port – starting in the days of King Solomon (who built a large fleet of ships which he sent to Ophir), through the Nabataeans, the Romans, the Arabs, and the Crusaders, all of whom ruled the Land of Israel. The modern city of Eilat was established in 1950. In 46 | The Jewish Travel
the early 1950s, a quay was built in the new city, and subsequently a port which became the basis for the new city’s economy. Towards the end of the 1960s, the tourism industry started developing in the city, and today Eilat is a paradise for tourists, travelers and vacationers. The bay is one of the major attractions, thanks to the beautiful beaches, the developed water sports and some of the best diving spots in the world. In the south of the city is the Coral Reserve, with splendid tropical fish among the reefs. Within the precincts of the reserve is the Underwater Observatory, with a marine museum that displays collections of fascinating sea animals. Not far from the observatory is the Dolphin Reef with its resident school of dolphins. The city’s many and varied restaurants suit all tastes,
and there are also clubs, colorful shops and a promenade along the northern shoreline which holds vibrant bazaars during the summer. There are additional attractions for youngsters and families, such as an amusement park, a new “Kings City” (a high-tech theme park for all the family based on the Bible and Bible stories). Eilat also has an IMAX movie theatre offering a 3-D experience, and many more leisure time activities. The Arava region- north of the city and the Eilat- Mountains is an arid desert. But in between the exposed mountains there are many nature and beauty spots as well as archaeological and historical sites, which make Eilat a good starting point for special trips in the area, such as camel treks, jeep tours and more. This stunning oasis at the shores of the Dead Sea offers visitors a chance to explore the area’s natural wonders, take in the majestic landscape and enjoy an abundance of health benefits Ein Gedi, Hebrew for “Kid Spring” (as in young goat), is an oasis located west of the Dead Sea, close to Masada and the Caves of Qumran. The climate is dry and the plains arid; temperatures soar in the summer and fall to a minimum of 10 Celcius in wintertime. The area is known for its caves, springs, and its rich diversity of flora and fauna. Ein Gedi is mentioned several times in biblical writings, for example, in the Song of Songs: “My beloved is unto me as a cluster of henna flowers in the vineyards of Ein Gedi” (1:14). According to Jewish tradition, David hid from Saul in the caves here. A kibbutz, founded in 1956, is located about a kilometer from the oasis. It offers various tourist attractions and takes advantage of the local weather patterns and the abundance of natural water

to cultivate out-of-season produce. Prior to the founding of the kibbutz, the Ein Gedi area had not been permanently inhabited for 500 years. Ein Gedi serves as a center of attraction for visitors from Israel and abroad thanks to the extraordinary landscape and unique experience offered by the Dead Sea, which has recently been named one of the finalists in the vote on the world’s seven natural wonders. It is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water, with 33.7% salinity, a fact which enables bathers to float on the water. The Dead Sea is also considered to be one of the healthiest places on earth because of the high oxygen levels and pollution-free air in the area. It was one of the world’s first health resorts (for Herod the Great), and has been the supplier of a wide variety of cosmetics and herbal sachets for many years.
Nature’s gifts
The Ein Gedi Spa, situated on the shores of the Dead Sea and overlooking the impressive Moab mountains of Jordan, is a natural wellness center combining the benefits of the four natural elements of the area: Water, sun, mud and air: Water: In addition to the swimming pool and private beach, the spa also offers a unique, revitalizing experience at the thermo-mineral springs, which are rich in sulfur, magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium. The natural minerals deeply penetrate and detoxify the blood stream and are also extremely effective in the relief of arthritis and rheumatism. Sun: Ein Gedi enjoys 330 days a year of sunshine, and due to it being the lowest place on earth (1,385 ft below sea level), sun rays are filtered and relatively harmless. Mud: The famous therapeu-
tic Dead Sea black mud available at the spa not only helps relieve arthritis and rheumatism, but also leaves the skin soft, silky and cleansed. Air: The air here is dry and rich in oxygen and bromide. The bromide reduces blood pressure and relaxes the nervous system, while the oxygen (23%) opens the respiratory system and makes physical exertion easier. The spa also offers various treatments such as Euroveda, steam sauna, peeling, toxin removal, hot rock massage, natural cosmetics and more. It is recommended to combine a visit to the spa with a short hike at the Ein Gedi Natural Park and a trip to the historic site of Masada or the Caves of Qumran.

City of
avid
The City of David is the birthplace of the city of Jerusalem, the place where King David established his kingdom, and where the history of the People of Israel was written. It is within walking distance from the Old City of Jerusalem and the Western Wall, and is one of the most exciting sites in Israel. Visitors come from all over the world to see the strongest physical connection between the stories of the Bible and reality, the place where the Holy City started.
In the year 1004 BCE, King David conquered the city from the Jebusites and established his capital there. It was here where the People of Israel were united under King David’s rule, here where the Holy Ark was bought and here where the First Temple was built by King Solomon, King David’s son. Today the City of David is an archeological park that tells the story of the establishment of Jerusalem, its wars and hardships, its prophets and kings, and the history of the Jews during Biblical times. The remains of the city are present in the ancient stones and the thousands of shards that cover the pathways between the buildings. Among the archeological ruins are large elaborate houses that bear wit50 | The Jewish Travel
ness to the high social status of the city’s residents, Warren’s Shaft leading to the water tunnel that was used to transport water from the Gikhon spring outside the city, and the remains of one of several towers that was used to defend the well. It is thought that King Solomon was anointed and crowned king of Israel at this site. Among the ruins found in the city were personal seals for signing letters and documents bearing the names their owners – people who were mentioned in the bible. One of the most fascinating parts of the City of David is the tunnel of Shiloh - a 533-meter-long tunnel that was carved during the period of King Hezkiyahu. The tunnel extends from the city to the well at Shiloh, and
is an astounding engineering feat. Its builders carved the tunnel through solid rock beginning from opposite ends and succeeded in making the two sides meet in the middle. Visitors can walk through the tunnel which is partially filled with water, and come out at the pools of Shiloh. The City of David and its remains and historical significance have made it an important and exciting tourist site.

amla Gamla has it all: a dramatic saga, rugged landscape and magnificent vistas to match, and a wonderful foray into nature, including a waterfall and great raptors soaring overhead. Gamla is the site of a Jewish city founded in the second-century CE Hasmonean times, located on a craggy basalt outcropping in the western Golan Heights. One look at the hump-like shape of the hill is enough to understand why it was called Gamla, which comes from the Hebrew word for camel. Two thousand years ago, the Jewish historian Josephus described the siege of the walled city of Gamla by the Roman general Vespasian, who marched across the Galilee to subdue the Golan in 67 CE at the beginning of the Great Revolt.
Seven months later, the Romans overcame the walls and streamed into the city. Josephus says the 9,000 remaining inhabitants fought their way to the edge of their town and threw themselves to their deaths into the gorge below when they realized they could not avoid capture. This element of the story has led to the site’s nickname, “the Masada of the north.” Even a view of Gamla from the observation platform at the top of the trail is thrilling. You can clearly see the walls, the actual tower Josephus says the Romans undermined by pulling out the bottom stones, and the synagogue, one of the oldest ever found. Archaeologists discovered not only these architectural remains, but many other artifacts: the picks the Romans used to climb the walls, thousands of missile stones and arrowheads, as well as coins minted by the rebels stamped “For the salvation 52 | The Jewish Travel
of Holy Jerusalem.” Good walkers will enjoy the fairly steep trail to the antiquities (about one hour down and, of course, longer coming back up). Quotes from Josephus’ account are inscribed on boulders along the trail. At the site itself you’ll get a closer look at the massive round tower, and the synagogue that was the heart and soul of the town that occupied these slopes two millennia ago. The trail also leads to the industrial zone of the community – its olive presses – which have been reconstructed to show visitors how they worked and help reveal elements of the daily life of this vibrant and prosperous community. A short walk from the parking lot leads to the observatory built by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority next to Byzantine ruins. Here visitors and bird watchers can enjoy the sight of the Griffon vultures for which Gamla
is famous, as they effortlessly catch the updrafts from the cliffs where they nest. From here you can also see the 150-foot high Gamla waterfall, to which another trail leads. A brochure in English showing all the trails comes with your entrance ticket; the rangers are happy to give advice on the best way to see the site. To complement your experience, visit the archaeological museum at nearby Katzrin, which features a dramatic audio-visual presentation about Gamla among its displays.

Bible and Museum Visitors to the Bible Lands Museum flow easily through ancient regions and historical periods as they move from one airy gallery to another in this open-design complex. Yet every exhibit, large or small, keeps them anchored to one great theme – biblical heritage and the Bible lands. The artifacts are displayed together with evocative quotes from Scripture, which help visitors realize that biblical figures - from the patriarchs and the matriarchs to Canaanite deities, Queen Esther and many more - and the tiny land of Israel are rooted in the myriad cultures and faiths, spanning the ancient Near East, from Egypt to Turkey, Mesopotamia and beyond.

You will come away enriched with greater understanding of the Bible’s influence on Western civilization and world events. The exhibit is even more amazing when you consider that it is the life-long collection of one man, Elie Borowski (1913-2003)
who graced Jerusalem with this museum specifically to display these treasures. The museum also runs imaginative enrichment programs and special events, and its wine and cheese Saturday-night concerts are fixtures in the capital.

The Jewish iaspora Museum The unique displays of the Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora showcase Jewish experience from the exile after the destruction of the First Temple 2,600 years ago to the present. Six themes (or “gates” as the museum calls them) serve as the museum’s pathways to better understanding Jewish experience the world over: Family, Community, Faith, Culture, the Jewish people among the nations, and the return to the land of Israel.
Unlike ordinary museums, the Diaspora Museum’s displays are not chronological, and most of the artifacts on display are not of intrinsic value. Rather, they are replicas that highlight the complex fabric of Jewish life. One example is Sabbath candlesticks or lamps, which take on various forms in different Jewish ethnic groups, but all hark back to the ancient tradition of Jews everywhere to welcome the Sabbath at home with illumination. An introduction to the richness of Jewish ethnicity begins with the first display you see, which opens the Gate of the Family: changing slides that show “Jewish faces” from all over the world. Among the displays at the Gate of Community are models of community institutions and films on Jewish communities the world over. The Gate of Faith contains 18 synagogue models, including the pagodalike house of prayer from Kaifeng, China and Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1954 ultra-modern Beth Shalom in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. The Gate of Culture highlights art, 56 | The Jewish Travel
education and languages, and at the Feher Jewish Music Center, you can listen to Jewish music of all varieties and see videos about Jewish music (now undergoing digitalization). The Feher data base includes music from India, Spain, Libya, Greece, Morocco, and elsewhere, and over 5,000 names of conductors, composers, poets, authors, singers, translators, musicologists and more, from the roots of Jewish music to the twenty-first century. Among the entries are those some might consider obscure (but fascinating), such as Acan Moses de Zaragua, a 14th century poet known for his treatise in verse on chess, to the well-known Maestro Leonard Bernstein, hearing his composition for the Jewish prayer before sleep, Hashkivenu, his conducting of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and other masterpieces. “Among the nations” is a section devoted to the relationship between Jews and other faiths and cultures, while the Return to Zion tells the story of Zionism including its effect on individual families. Here you’ll find a “fam-
ily tree” – showing two imaginary extended families from different corners of the Jewish world and how some of their members came to live in Israel. As visitors mount the stairs from one level to another, they see a memorial column with myriad lights, recalling the dark episodes of Jewish history. For those seeking to put everything together in terms of the time-line of Jewish history, the Chronosphere is a theater presentation that takes you step by step through the story. Among additional highlights is the excitement of looking up family names and places of origin on computer and receiving a print-out to take home, the Jewish Genealogy Center for further research, and fascinating changing exhibitions. The Cave of achpelah
Tomb of the Patriarchs
The Cave of Machpelah in Hebron is one of the holiest places in the Land of Israel. It is the burial place that Abraham purchased for his family after Sarah died (Genesis 23:8-17). Later, Isaac and Ishmael buried Abraham there (Gen. 25:9). Subsequently, it became the final resting place for all the patriarchs and matriarchs, except Rachel, who died near Bethlehem.
The building over the tomb is truly amazing in its dimensions, complexity and antiquity. Huge walls built by Herod the Great 2,000 years ago surround it, while the interior is a combination of medieval architecture, Arabesque décor from later centuries, and synagogues founded after the reestablishment of the Jewish community here following
the 1967 Six Day War. In one corner of the largest hall, with its house-like tomb markers for Isaac and Rebecca, a cupola stands over a small opening into the actual Cave of Machpelah. Another, smaller room contains the tombs of Abraham and Sarah, and across an open courtyard are those of Jacob and Leah.
idron Valley The Kidron Valley is one of Jerusalem’s most sacred locales, due to its location between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. On the Mount of Olives is the world’s oldest Jewish cemetery, where it is believed the resurrection of the dead will begin when the Messiah comes. Legend has it that a miraculous bridge will span the way to the Temple Mount.
This part of the Kidron is also called the Valley of Jehosafat, where God will judge the nations of the world (Joel 3:12). Another name for the valley is the Vale of the King; it was once intensely cultivated and the revenues went to the king. Many olive trees have recently been brought here to restore the ancient landscape. The Kidron also has the earliest tombs in the cemetery: Zechariah’s Tomb, named after a First Temple priest, the Tomb of the Sons of Hezir, a Second Temple-era 58 | The Jewish Travel
priestly family, and Absalom’s Tomb. The conical-roofed Absalom’s Tomb received its name because the Bible says this rebellious son of David built a monument here so he would be remembered. Absalom was eventually killed by his father’s men; Jerusalemites of old would bring their sons to pelt the tomb with stones and recall the fate of rebellious offspring. The Talmudic Village of atzrin As you tour the reconstructed Talmudic village of Katzrin in the Golan Heights, suddenly it dawns on you: you are walking the lanes of a real village mentioned in the Talmud, which has come alive again in its actual ancient location.
A kitchen, pantry, living room, bedroom and courtyard have been restored and outfitted with objects of daily life. Many of these implements are real ones that the region’s farmers continued to use until recently; all appear in actual passag-
es from the Talmud, which makes learning about our ancestors fun. A highlight is the visit to the remains of Katzrin’s stately Talmudicera synagogue, where modern-day Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and weddings can even be arranged. The younger set will enjoy making the audio-visual acquaintance of ancient sages in a presentation shown in a replica of the synagogue. By special ar-
rangement, bread-baking, potterymaking and even olive-pressing in season can be part of the experience. The reconstructed village is across the street from the modern city of Katzrin, which has an archaeological museum to complement your experience, and can also be a good place for a break before or after your visit.
eron To steep yourself in the unique spiritual and mystical atmosphere of the Galilee, you should spend time not only in the Kabalah heartland of Safed, but take the beautiful drive to Meron about 15 miles to the northwest. Here you will find the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, Mishnaic-era sage, rebel against Rome and author of the Zohar. Rabbi Shimon’s tomb is a magnet for Jewish pilgrims, especially on Lag Ba’omer when tens of thousands of people stream to Meron to pray and celebrate, some camping out for days.
Today, Meron is a moshav (cooperative community) named after the Talmudic village that stood here. Adjacent to Rabbi Shimon’s tomb is the burial cave of Rabbi Hillel the Elder, where miraculously pooling water is a source of blessing. The rock-cut Meron synagogue, with doorways facing Jerusalem, dates from the late third century CE. 60 | The Jewish Travel

estern Wall and the Temple ount Visitors who stand at the Western Wall, looking up at the huge ancient stones – the last remnant of the Temple in Jerusalem – are almost always surrounded by people: some have come to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah, others to take pictures before a wedding, or to place a heartfelt prayer-note within the cracks between the stones. But they sense the presence not only of the here-and-now, but also of the untold numbers of people who for centuries streamed to this, the most sacred place in the world to the Jewish people.
The Western Wall was part of the most magnificent building Jerusalem had ever seen. It was one of four walls Herod the Great built to support the 1,555,000-square-foot plaza on which the Temple stood. It was almost 1,500 feet long – the rest can still be seen inside the Western Wall Tunnel . Originally it was some 90 feet high and reached some 60 feet into the ground. But it is not because of its grand architecture that the Western Wall became an inseparable part of the Jewish People. Solomon, who built the First Temple, said it best with these words: “May Your eyes be open day and night toward this House, toward the place of which You have said, ‘My name shall abide there’ may You heed the prayers which Your servant will offer toward this place. And when You hear the supplications which Your servant and Your people Israel offer toward this 62 | The Jewish Travel
place, give heed in Your heavenly abode...” (1 Kings 8:17). It was Abraham who first linked the Jewish people to Jerusalem , when he offered Isaac in sacrifice on Mount Moriah, the Temple Mount , now above and behind the Wall. The rock of the offering, over which the Dome of the Rock was built in the late seventh century, is known in Jewish tradition as the Foundation Stone of the world. King David purchased this land; Solomon’s First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE; Herod expanded the Second Temple- which was burned by the Romans in 70 CE, except- legend says, for the Western Wall. It was then that Talmudic sages began to teach: “This is the Western Wall of the Temple- which is never destroyed for the shekhinah [the Divine presence] is in the west” (Bamidbar Rabah 11:63).
In the Middle Ages, the Wall received another name-the Wailing Wall, as Jews were observed here lamenting the Temple’s destruction. A legend says that on Ninth of Av , the anniversary of the Temple ‘s destruction, the dew glistening on the stones is the Wall itself shedding tears. For 19 years, from 1948 until 1967, when Jerusalem was divided, Jews were separated from the Wall. But then, in the Six Day War, on June 7, 1967, Jerusalem was reunited. From then on, the Western Wall became not only a symbol of glories past and a place to leave a bit of oneself in the form of notes bearing prayers and blessings, but of the love and devotion of the Jewish People for their Holy City now and forever.

The Jewish Cemetery on the Mount of lives Jews have sought since antiquity to be buried on the Mount of Olives, where according to the Bible (Zech. 14:4) the resurrection will begin when the Messiah comes. Eventually, the cemetery grew to cover the entire western and much of the southern slopes.
The earliest tombs are located at the foot of the mountain in the Kidron Valley. One is attributed to David’s rebellious son Absalom, another to the First Temple

priest Zechariah; a third bears an inscription mentioning the sons of Hezir, a priestly family that lived 2,000 years ago. Jewish burial here continued throughout the centuries, interrupted only between 1948 and 1967 when Jerusalem was divided. Among the many legends surrounding this sacred mountain, it is said that in the End of Days people will tunnel underground from all over the world to rise up here.
Beit Alfa National Park, boasts the remains of one of the most beautiful synagogue mosaic floors in Israel, dating from the early sixth century CE. Located on Kibbutz Heftziba in the eastern Jezreel Valley, the colorful folk-art style designs of the floor reveals the allegiance of the ancient congregation to Jewish tradition and it’s community, as well as its links with the wider culture of its day.
The panel closest to the Torah Shrine reveals a Holy Ark, along with menorahs, shofars, etrogs, lulavs and incense pans, all elements of Temple worship in Jerusalem, showing that the long-destroyed Temple was not forgotten. The center panel reveals a zodiac, labeled in Hebrew, revealing that this community was comfortable borrowing artistic motifs from the surrounding culture. The lower panel presents the biblical story of the offering of Isaac in moving detail. 64 | The Jewish Travel
The renowned individuals interred here include the medieval sage Rabbi Ovadiah of Bartenura; Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the father of modern Hebrew; S.Y. Agnon, Israel’s Nobel laureate in literature; and prime minister Menachem Begin and his wife Aliza. At the Mount of Olives Information Center near Absalom’s Tomb, visitors can obtain information on the location of specific tombstones.
An inscription in Aramaic notes the date, and the funding of the floor by donations. An inscription in Greek, “May the craftsmen who carried out this work, Marianos and his son Hanina, be held in remembrance” became the basis for a highlight of the Beit Alfa visit: an imaginative audiovisual dramatization depicting the choice by the “synagogue board” of Marianos and Hanina for the task. Beit ovrin The people who lived at Beit Govrin thousands of years ago left behind plentiful testimony to their existence both above and below ground. Among the sites are a Roman amphitheater and Beit Govrin National Park,Tel Mareshah, which was fortified by Solomon’s son Rehoboam (2 Chron. 11:8). The top of Tel Mareshah affords a wonderful view of this strategic region separating the coast from the Judean Mountains; on a clear

The real excitement, though, lies in the cool interior of some of the hundreds of caves, which first served as quarries for the people of Hellenistic Maresha to build their houses in. Beneath those houses are storerooms and cisterns. One cave had hundreds of niches where pigeons were raised; in another you can see an ancient olive press.

DREAM VACATION PACKAGES to the Carribbean, Mexico, Florida, Israel, Europe etc. EXCITING CRUISE PACKAGES including Kosher Cruises and Tours to Israel
Packing for a trip to Israel isn’t very different from packing for any other destination. Israel is a modern, developed country, and you can purchase virtually anything you need during your stay, including clothing, cosmetics, and hygiene products. The most important thing to keep in mind when packing is the weather, especially if you are travelling during the summer. Between May and October Israel is very hot, sunny and humid, but luckily, almost all places are air-conditioned. November to mid March is officially winter – but it’s a very mild, pleasant winter by most standards. In spring and fall (mid March to mid June and mid September to mid November) you can expect perfectly idyllic weather conditions. Pleasantly warm, with a very rare rainy day. Pack loose-fitting, lightweight clothes for summer visits. Cotton and linen garments will keep you comfortable and can be easily laundered. Pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals for sight-seeing. Jerusalem and the north can be cool in the evening – pack a sweater or other lightweight warm layers. For winter visits, pack a shell or rain jacket of some kind as well as other layers – long pants, sweater, fleece jacket, hat and gloves. You may start the day out with a jacket, by midday take it off and put it on again come evening. Showers may fall during this period, so an umbrella is wise. Most Israelis, and tourists, dress casually, but many plush restaurants, nightclubs 80 | The Jewish Travel
and hotel dining rooms require the guests to follow a smart dress code for dinner. Business people are also expected to dress smartly. Every visitor to Israel must have a valid passport with them (valid for at least six months). It’s a good idea to make two copies of the first two pages of your passport. Keep one at home and put the other separate from your passport. This will help speed the process of replacing your passport if it’s lost or stolen. The currency in Israel is the New Israeli Shekel (NIS). Each shekel is divided into 100 ‘agurot’ (singular ‘agura’). NIS bills are in denominations of 200, 100, 50 and 20 shekels. Coins are in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 shekels, and 50 and 10 agurot. One may bring an unlimited amount of local and foreign currency into Israel in cash, travelers’ checks, letters of credit and State of Israel Bonds. Foreign currency may be exchanged at any bank and at many hotels. Travelers checks are generally as good as cash and can be replaced if lost. It’s best to keep most of your money in this form until you need it. The cost of the checks is usually low (often free) and will save you a lot of trouble and worry. It is a good idea to have
some cash with you for emergencies, transportation and small purchases. Bring an ATM card and you can get more from local banks without having to worry about exchange rates and fees. Most businesses accept credit cards. Electronic appliances in Israel The electric current in Israel is 220 volts AC, single phase, 50 Hertz. Most hotels provide hair dryers and virtually all hotel rooms have 110/220 electric shaver sockets. Electric shavers, traveling irons and other small appliances may require adaptors and/or converters, which you can purchase prior to your departure.
