ONE IN FIFTY On March 20, 2013 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported the results of a recent study conducted with parents. According to parents’ reports the identification rate for children with autism has risen to one in fifty. The question is whether this is a true increase in the identification rate or the result of improved diagnostic techniques. While scientists at the CDC suggest that the increase is due to more sensitive diagnostic practices, advocacy groups and parents of children with autism propose that it reflects a true increase in the occurrence of autism spectrum disorders.
information regarding waiver supports by contacting the Family and Social Services Agency (FSSA). Their website is www.in.gov/ fssa/ , you will find a number of services available on this site. You will want to check out “Disabilities Services” to find information about the different waivers that are available.
Regardless of the reason for the increased identification rate, the true issue is the numbers of individuals who have autism and the impact it has on families, schools, and communities. The money that was used to conduct the study by the CDC could easily be used to develop and support intervention services for those who are already diagnosed. With the reported increase improved support becomes even more critical for those identified on the spectrum.
Keep in mind that your child’s qualification for waiver services is not dependent on the family income. These services will provide a number of supports for adult individuals who are on the autism spectrum as well as those with other disabilities.
Children with autism often struggle with the ability to communicate, have difficulty making and keeping friends, and controlling their reactions/emotions in stressful situations. While these difficulties can be dealt with and strategies implemented to help ease the struggle, these issues are going to continue to be a problem with which the individual must cope throughout their lives. Once out of the public school program, what services are available to support individuals with autism as they become adults? Children who are identified with an autism spectrum disorder qualify for waiver services. Parents need to apply for waiver services as soon as their child is identified. These services can help pay for additional support for the child, but often there is an 8 to 10 year waiting list to begin receiving funds. The sooner a parent makes an application, the better. Parents can get additional
You may also call the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services (BDDS) a division of FSSA to get more information about the services available. Their phone number is 1-800-545-7763. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Another division of FSSA is Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VBS). This division can provide support and training to allow an individual with a disability to find and maintain a job. Again, these services are available to you at no cost and are geared to help those with disabilities. You can find additional information on their website www.VRS.in.gov or you may call at 1-800-545-7763. Your child’s most recent psycho-educational evaluation and IEP will be requested to help with the determination of disability services. Don’t hesitate to call these agencies if you have a child with a disability, regardless of their age!

Snipping the Anxiety: Haircutting Desensitization for Kids with Autism For children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, daily life events can sometimes create major challenges. Many kids with autism find personal care activities, such as haircutting and nail clipping, particularly difficult to tolerate, explained Ali, a training and program coordinator for the Applied Behavior Center for Autism. “A lot kids with autism become very uncomfortable during a haircut. Some will cry and become very upset; some will try to run from the chair,” Ali shared. “Another one might even become aggressive — and some salons will refuse to complete a haircut on a combative child.” Parents of children with autism often develop their own strategies to deal with this aversion. Some are forced to try to cut their child’s hair at night while she is asleep, while others may eschew haircuts altogether and opt for a lower-maintenance, lower-stress hairstyle for their child. Fortunately, the Applied Behavior Center for Autism has another solution. Each of its central Indiana centers offer desensitization therapies to help kids — and families — learn to better deal with these personal care events. While the stage where the process begins and the speed at which it progresses is different with every child, Ali explained, a step-by-step plan breaks the haircut process down into small, manageable stages. First, the program coordinator identifies the best starting point for therapy. “Each individual child has his own hair cut hang-ups, so we first need to create a baseline,” Ali said. “Is he OK with having the clippers in the room, but not turned on? Does the buzzing noise of the clippers bother him, or does he only become upset when the clippers touch his head? Once we determine what stage of the haircut makes him uncomfortable, that’s where we start therapy.”
Applied Behavior Center for Autism therapists work with patients to help them build tolerance for haircutting over time. First, they work with the child to get used to the feel of the clippers on his head for only one second. When that is tolerable, the therapist increases the time to five seconds, and then to 10 seconds. Once the child shows he is comfortable with the touch of the buzzing clipper, the therapist can progress to actual haircutting. “This can be a very slow process,” Ali stressed. “We like to have a couple of days to spend on each step before moving on to the next stage of the haircut desensitization process. We never want to force the child into the chair and hold him down — instead, we gradually acclimate the patient to the process, so it’s no longer terrifying and he knows what to expect.” Kids are also motivated by positive reinforcement. For example, if the child only displays acceptable behavior during a session, she might get a piece of candy or the chance to play a favorite game. In addition, the program coordinator works with parents to establish goals for the therapy, Ali said. Not all families have the same end-goal for treatment. Some want to be able to cut their child’s hair at home, while others would ultimately like to be able to go to a salon. We target the haircutting environment in the center first, and we work with the child to generalize that same level of tolerance at home, or even at a salon.”

CONFIDENCE BUILDING IN YOUR KIDS Confidence is an important ingredient in having good self-esteem. As kids grow up they need their parents to instill more confidence in them. You do this by reminding your children of their personal strengths and teach them to take risks and to stretch out of their comfort zone. Confidence is a quality that creates success in children. As a parent you may find yourself constantly telling your child what not to do. However, changing your words and requests are imperative in shaping your child’s sense of him or hers self. Next to a genetic predisposition to having self confidence, YOU are the most important person in building your child’s sense of confidence. Your child needs to believe that you believe in him/her. They will feel more secure when the family practices regular rituals like prayer or nightly time to read. • Do you encourage your child to associate with friends who share your family’s same values? • Do you talk to your child about setting personal goals? Keep this article close and allow it to motivate you to practice these parenting tools daily. It is easy as a parent to notice what your child needs to work on and not emphasize what your child already does right. We know that kids are much more likely to follow through with tasks and feel good about themselves if you encourage the effort not the outcome. Practice being the positive Mom and make statements that fortify your belief in them!
Kids with low self-esteem aren’t able to identify areas of confidence; therefore they hinder their own ability to achieve. When they don’t believe in themselves they stop conceiving ideas that contribute toward their own personal satisfaction. This becomes a vicious cycle because when they don’t achieve they stop believing in themselves. How can you help your child build his/her confidence quotient? Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is both a very hard day and a very special day for me. It’s a hard day because I lost my mom to breast cancer 20 years ago this July. She was only 70 years young and I was only 35 years old - from my perspective, way too young for her and for me. You see my mom was always my best friend. I could not only tell her anything, she always knew the right thing to say. I was truly blessed to have been raised by a woman who, even though I am only 4’9” tall, raised me to be a very tall, confident woman. She taught me how to dream and how I can do anything I set my mind to. She taught me to set goals and do what is needed to reach those goals. And she did it most times very subtly. She was the perfect example of unconditional love. She was kind, compassionate, never had a harsh word for anyone, always smiled and never complained…even throughout her 15 year illness journey. So I miss her terribly, especially on Mother’s Day.
out on a lot as I climbed the corporate ladder, but we have a relationship like none other – another best friend. I have watched her grow and blossom into a beautiful, confident woman and phenomenal mother. Now, the best part of Mother’s Day is being a Nanie (aka grandma). I love being silly, playing make-believe, climbing the 4 story jungle gyms, going to the theater, planting in the garden and so much more. One of my favorite things to do is what I call Nanie days…where we get to spend an entire day together. We go to breakfast, the museum or zoo, shopping…a full day and night. This is the time I get to teach them what my mom taught me and what I have learned.
My business, Women Changing Lives, allows me to live a life where time and money no longer govern every decision I make. It enables me to have Nanie days whenever I want…no boss to ask, setting my own I also really love Mother’s Day, because 34 hours, work and family balance.
