Most parents are willing to try a variety of interventions to help resolve their child’s academic struggles. In many cases, parents may spend thousands of dollars by the time that they find out that a vision problem is contributing to the child’s learning difficulties.

Those parents that find vision problems early in their search position their child for success sooner.

When a student struggles with reading and learning, ruling out a vision problem should be the FIRST step. Often these problems will be related to an eye-coordination problem which means that your child may pass a vision screening at school or the pediatrician’s office and have 20/20 vision. In most cases, this screening does not assess the other 16+ visual skills required for learning and reading.

The child is told she has perfect vision, but she does not know that everyone does not see like her.

These are examples of how a child could see the words when s/he reads despite having 20/20 vision:

Furthermore, most of the symptoms that assist in diagnosing attention-deficit disorder are the same symptoms that could signify a vision problem that interferes with learning. Once a child is suspected to have ADD, a series of events can follow including expensive psychological tests and drug treatment for years, if not for life. However, if a developmental vision evaluation is done first, then the child has a chance at permanently fixing some if not all of the contributing factors to ADD. When a vision problem exists, treatment may involve glasses, optometric vision therapy, or both. Vision therapy treats vision problems that interfere with learning to read and reading to learn. Once the vision problems are treated successfully, tutoring and other special services can become more effective.

If you notice that your child is having problems with reading in school, it is important to have a developmental vision evaluation to determine if vision problems are contributing to your child’s difficulties.

The 5 most common signs that a vision problem may be interfering with your student’s ability to read and learn are: • • • • •
