Can You DIY? By Cecelia Tavenner
Maybe you’re the person who can fix an outlet that stopped working, and replace the kitchen faucet with a more modern version. Or you found an old dresser that was missing a drawer and transformed it into the perfect bench for the foyer. Or maybe you are a DIY wannabe.
If you fall into the wannabe category Keep in mind that not all DIY projects involve electricity, plumbing or other home repairs and furniture restoration. You might love the idea of repurposing old or broken furniture and giving new life to a once beautiful piece. But then you remember tools that you don’t own or know how to use will be involved.
got started and if they will teach you. Ask which tools they reccomend you have to start out with. Look for classes offered around town and get a group together, or host a DIY party of your own with your friends and family. Check online and see how others have done similar projects.
Give it away or give it new life When you’re spring cleaning or decluttering and come across something that doesn’t fit your current décor, or just looks outdated; you can keep it, donate it, toss it, or repurpose it.
Find a piece that is easy to handle
All good things to consider, but if you start small you might be able to progress to the bigger furniture or home repair projects.
• Repaint or stain a nightstand, side table, dresser, stool or chair • Reupholster a chair • Repair window and door screens • Repaint mismatched picture frames to create a fresh new grouping on the wall or a shelf
So how do you get started
Try something more challenging
Start small if you have to. There are a number of DIY projects that you already have the skills and tools to do. It's the deciding on the project and taking the first steps that may be the most difficult.
If you feel you’re ready to tackle a bigger job; go for it. Do your research, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
You might decide the dresser is too big and heavy to maneuver, even if a drawer is missing. Maybe the car is too small to haul the piece from wherever it was discovered and there isn’t a good workspace for a project that big.
When you decide on a project, or if you can’t decide; talk to someone who does the type of project you’re thinking about and ask them how you should get started. Find out how they

It’s fun to be creative, and satisfying to see a project through to the finish. Repurposing an old or broken item into something new instead of sending it to the landfill is also good for the environment.
Are you ready to DIY?

If you're currently volunteering good for you. If you’d like to start, there are online resources to help you navigate through the many ways you can help. Many find as little as one hour a week in their schedules to volunteer, while some have more time to offer. No matter what your situation or capability, you're sure to make a difference in the lives around you while getting back more than you ever imagined.
