Think Green! The dead of winter may seem to be an unlikely time to think about the well-being of your plants. But there are many home and gardening tasks that should be done in January and February to assure the health of your houseplants as well as your outdoor plantings. Here are a few tasks and tips to consider:

Outdoor Yard and Garden • Be on the lookout for spotted lanternfly egg masses on the trunks of trees and other surfaces. They can look like small patches of putty. If you find any egg masses, scrape them into a baggie or other container of alcohol or hand sanitizer and squish them. • Remove and destroy bagworm bags from affected trees (commonly found in evergreens). Each bag can contain 500-1000 eggs that will hatch in the spring if they are not destroyed. • Eastern tent caterpillar egg masses resemble shiny black styrofoam and are usually found on the ends of cherry and crabapple tree branches They should be removed and destroyed like bagworms, or hundreds of eggs within the egg masses will hatch in the spring. • Scale insects can be managed with a dormant oil spray (horticulture oil) anytime that trees and shrubs are dormant. This is especially important for fruit trees. Be sure that temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for a 24-hour period after spraying. The dormant oil will suffocate insects and their eggs nesting in the branches. • Heavy snow and ice loads can damage shrubs. Using an upward motion, gently sweep snow loads off shrubs to prevent breakage. Bent or weighed down branches will often spring back after the snow/ice melts

Indoor Plant and Insect Tips Be careful not to overwater houseplants. Most houseplants should be watered only when the top of the growing medium begins to dry out. In early winter you should cut back or stop fertilizing houseplants unless they are grown under supplemental lighting.

• By late February, you may notice that day length is increasing and the sunlight is more intense. Houseplants will begin to show signs of new growth. Now it’s time to start fertilizing your indoor plants. • Several species of soft scale insects may appear as brown bumps on leaves and stems of houseplants. These can be managed with a light horticultural oil spray labeled for indoor use. • Indoor herb plants benefit from daily misting and full sun windows.

Firewood Handling • Do not handle the hairy poison ivy vines wrapped around trees. The offending oil of poison ivy, urushiol, is active and can produce symptoms during any time of the year. Be very careful not to bring firewood into the house with poison ivy vines attached. • Don’t store firewood inside your home. Only bring in enough to burn at one time. Bark and other wood boring beetles may emerge inside the home. Last but not least, remember that spring is right around the corner so now is the perfect time to start planning for your best gardening year ever! The University of Maryland Extension Home and Garden Information Center gives a list of "Tips and Tasks" for each month of the year. Put More Into Your Wedding Day

Family Features

A

wedding day is filled with symbolic tradition, from varied religious customs to the never-ending circle reflected in the rings and the types of flowers accentuating the celebration. Even with all the traditional rituals to consider, nearly every bride and groom can find ways to give their special day some unique touches that reflect their personality and love.

scheme or theme. Integrate photos of the two of you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some you’re honoring in memoriam). You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music.

Music sets the mood for every wedding, and it’s an easy place to put your own spin on the celebration. Whether you forgo the traditional bridal march entirely or simply look for an arrangement that gives an updated twist to the classic version, let guests know this isn’t your average wedding by setting the festivities against a soundtrack that lets your true character shine.

Make favors meaningful. Why not forgo more common items like bubbles and chocolate, and instead send a little of yourself home with your guests. Maybe it’s a memento from a place with special meaning to you both. Just think about the moments and things that define you as a couple and do some searching online. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the options pile up.

The wedding party is intended to be a collection of those nearest and dearest to the couple, people who help ensure the day goes off without a hitch and who lead fellow revelers in celebrating the start of the new couple’s life together. That being said, there’s no reason this group must be limited to women on her side and guys on his, or even that it’s limited to humans – a beloved pooch can make for an adorable ring-bearer, after all.

Serve up a menu that shows guests more about your life together. Your loved ones can order basic beef or chicken anywhere. Instead, give them a glimpse into you. Make your main course the same food you enjoyed on your first date or during another monumental moment in your courtship Or plan the entire menu around a region that you hold close to your heart.

Photography is an essential element of your big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. Photos lend a personal touch, no matter what your color

Weddings are filled with traditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your own touches on the day or a special event filled with memories that are uniquely your own. Find more advice for life’s special moments at elivingtoday.com.

Take Steps Toward a Healthier Lifestyle New Year...New Routine

Get Regular Exercise

With health information and products so easily accessible there isn’t a better time than the new year to begin getting fit. Simply incorporate the basics into your daily routine. Good nutrition, adequate exercise and a daily supplement can start you down the path toward better health.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends an adequate amount of exercise every day. This guide can point to the right amount of exercise to add to your schedule:

Plan a Nutritious Diet The Dietary Guidelines for Americans describes a healthy diet as one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk products. It should be low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt and added sugar. • Eat more fruits and vegetables by setting freshly washed and prepared produce on the kitchen counter or at eye level in the fridge. At every meal, make sure half your plate is made up of fruit and vegetable servings. • One-fourth of your plate at every meal should be made up of grains, such as wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal or barley. People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. • The remaining one-fourth of your plate should be lean or low-fat cuts of meat, plant-based protein or seafood.

10

• Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week. For best results, spread the time out over several days. • Do strength training exercises at least twice a week. Lifting weights builds muscle, which means the body burns more calories – even at rest. • It’s important to keep in mind that when people are active, they produce more free radicals. The antioxidants found in supplements can help buffer the negative effects of the workout. Improving your diet, exercising regularly taking a daily supplement and getting enough restorative sleep are all important steps to overall wellness. Work to incorporate each step into your daily routine until you reach your goal of good health. Find more health-conscious tips at eLivingToday.com.

Choose organic and Non-GMO whenever possible!
