Young Breast Cancer Survivor: Shauna Kennedy-Carr

Dealing with breast cancer is a challenge, and I'd like to share my personal story with you – a cautionary tale that we all need to take charge of our own health. You see, my mother had received her second diagnosis with breast cancer when I decided it might be a good idea to get myself checked out with a mammogram.

Approaching 39 years of age, I went to the doctor. I shared my family's history including my mother's breast cancer diagnoses and requested a mammogram. The doctor told me that I did not need a mammogram because my mom didn't get cancer until she was in her 60s, and that it is more common for a woman of HER age.

I was shocked. The nurse who was in the room with us must have noticed my comfortableness and questioned the doctor, “Aren't we still saying 40 for women especially if they have a family history?” The doctor said “No.” At the end of my visit, that wonderful nurse told me that she does not normally speak against the doctors, but shared with me Inland Imaging's phone number and suggested I give them a call to request a mammogram and to be sure to share my family history. I called Inland Imaging right away and scheduled an appointment for the very next day.

The mammogram and ultrasound identified two spots their doctors were concerned with. Biopsies were scheduled. Then came the phone call – I had breast cancer! I could not believe what I was hearing. After the initial shock, I leaned on what I already knew. If my mom could fight breast cancer, then so can I! I came to realize what a blessing my mother's breast cancer was for me. I was already well educated on the topic and knew what the fight ahead of me would look like. I chose to have a lumpectomy followed by 6 ½ weeks of radiation. Additionally, because the biopsies identified my cancer as estrogen positive, I chose to have a full hysterectomy.

Just 3 months later during a follow up mammogram, I knew that all the extra pictures being taken were not a good sign. I had another lumpectomy followed by a full double mastectomy. Just eight days later I was being released from the hospital to face another long recovery.

As a part of my healing therapy, a friend and I started to refinish furniture and do crafts. This creative therapy led to the opening of my shop Those Girls, a home décor and gift shop specializing in recovered and repurposed items.

Change is Here: Your Family and the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare)

Many women have questions about how the new health care program will work.

Recently we had a chance to sit down with local insurance agents McKinley Romero and Bradley Rimpela, experts on the new health care reform and they were able to answer all of our questions: Q: What are the insurance exchanges and who will use them?

A: Everyone who does not have health insurance provided by their employer. Our company uses the exact same system that the Exchange/Marketplace uses; our advantage is that we are able to help people in person or over the phone unless they qualify for Medicaid, (in those cases we can direct them to the correct government agency).We go beyond what state workers can do.

Q: When can we begin to sign up for Obama Care?

A: People can enroll from October 1st to March 31st otherwise they will be locked out unless they have a “qualifying event” such as a loss of employer coverage, permanent move, marriage, divorce, birth, etc.

Q: How does the coverage of the new plans compare to most current coverage?

A: All of the new plans will be required to cover 10 essential benefits: Outpatient services, emergency care, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse, rehabilitative and habilatative services, lab, preventative, and pediatric services.

Q: Who should enroll in these new plans?

A: The new law requires everyone must carry a “Qualified Health Plan” or they risk being penalized financially by the government. This next year's penalty is the greater of $95 or 1%, of net annual income per person in the household. The Penalty doubles by 2015.

Q: How much will these plans cost compared to what people are paying today?

A: Great question, I know that is what is on everybody's mind. With individuals making up to $40,000 a year qualifying for a subsidy; I think the majority of people will be pleasantly surprised with what they will be eligible to receive in subsidies to protect their loved ones with quality health coverage.

Q: Please describe thoroughly the services your agency will offer in regards to medical insurance.

A: We are licensed, certified agents and are appointed by all insurance carriers in the Exchange/Marketplace. As certified agents, we are able to consult with you on your individual health care needs. In addition; we also help with individual dental policies (now mandatory for children under 19 years old), supplemental plans such as Accident, Cancer, Hospital indemnity, and Medicare plans (Medicare Advantage, Supplement, and Part D plans). We are agents, we work for you, and there is no extra cost for our consultative services. Helping people select coverage that is meaningful and useful to them is what we do.

Spooky Smoothie Yield: 4 servings

3 cups Limited Edition TruMoo Lowfat Vanilla Milk, orange color 1 -1/2 cups lowfat vanilla Greek yogurt 5 cups ice cubes 1/4 cup fat free whipped cream Candy corn for garnish, optional In blender, combine vanilla milk, yogurt and ice cubes.

Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy.

To serve, pour into serving glasses. Top with whipped cream and candy corn.

Monster Mash Mudslide Yield: 4 servings

4 cups TruMoo Lowfat Chocolate Milk 10 chocolate wafer cookies, coarsely broken ½ cup frozen non-dairy whipped topping, thawed 8 mini chocolate chips or mini chocolate candies (orange/brown color recommended) In blender, blend chocolate milk and chocolate wafer cookies until smooth. Heat mixture in saucepan or microwave until just heated through.

To serve, pour chocolate milk mixture into 4 glasses. For each serving, spoon a large, upright dollop of whipped topping to resemble a ghost.

Insert chocolate chips or chocolate candies into dollop for eyes.

Note: To enjoy a cold Mudslide, do not heat in saucepan or microwave.
