Refrigerator Notes In this issue.. Features
When I was a child, my parents started me with piano lessons in second grade. When I was old enough for the school band (fifth grade), I added flute to my musical education. I’m not going to say it was without angst. I rebelled against the daily practice requirements, and I sometimes fudged on practice time. But, in the end, I learned skills that I cherish and carry with me to this day. I work part-time for my church as the music minister, playing piano and flute...some 40 years later. My mother loves musicals, and we often attended live theater productions. Through all of these experiences they instilled in me a love for the arts. When I purchased “Kids Directory” four years ago, there was no question I would carry on the tradition of the previous publisher to support arts organizations in town. I believe our community is richer because we have vibrant community visual and performing arts organizations. We proudly sponsor performances by Springfield Ballet, Springfield Little Theatre, and Springfield Symphony Orchestra. We hope our support means you and your family have opportunities to go to a theatre performance, see a ballet, hear the symphony, or visit an art exhibit. Let’s foster the natural creativity that our children have. It’s summer. Soak up the sun. Dip your toes in the water. Catch a few fireflies. Hug your kids. Be good to yourself. |

Celebrating the Arts
in Greater Springfield
Springfield Art Museum
1111 E Brookside Drive • Springfield sgfmuseum.org • 417-837-5700
The mission of the Springfield Art Museum is “Enjoy. Learn. Create.” In 1926, a group of women led by Deborah D. Weisel started an Art Study Club. Today, we have those ladies to thank for the Springfield Art Museum, the city’s oldest cultural institution. The Springfield Art Museum honors this legacy by expanding community outreach and introducing people of all ages to the beauty, wonder, and imagination of art. The museum’s popular Watercolor USA exhibit features the best in contemporary American watermedia through Aug. 29. The museum is open every day except Monday, and admission is free. See their ad on page 15.
Springfield Ballet
springfieldballet.org • 417-862-1343
In 1976, the Springfield Civic Ballet Inc. was founded as a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the efforts of creating a performing ballet company, education programs, and bringing first-class performances by visiting professional dance companies to foster interest on the arts. The company of dancers ranging in age from 12 to 22 premiered in November 1976. Annually in December, Springfield Ballet presents “The Nutcracker,” a holiday tradition for generations of patrons. The Spring 2022 performance will be “Coppélia.” Through its year-round education and outreach programs, Springfield Ballet brings the beauty of dance to all ages. See their ad on page 17.
Springfield Little Theatre
411 E. Walnut Street • 417-869-1334 • springfieldlittletheatre.org SLT Education Department: 237 S. Florence Ave. • 417-413-2287
Springfield Little Theatre is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization energized by the highest artistic ideals to entertain, educate, and involve the community in live theatrical productions and preserve the historic Landers Theatre. Springfield Little Theatre presents shows in a variety of venues, including their main stage and studio theatre productions at The Judith Enyeart Reynolds School of the Performing Arts. The Springfield Little Theatre Education Department has grown into its own facility, with classes in acting, voice, dance, film, comedy, writing, and theatre production; a school touring program; a series of productions; and performing troupes for elementary through high school students. springfieldmosymphony.org • 417-864-6683
The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is southwest Missouri’s largest regional, professional orchestra and one of the oldest arts organizations in Springfield. Each symphony season includes nine monthly concerts, two free community concerts, and education and outreach programming. During the pandemic, Springfield Symphony Orchestra didn’t miss a beat, using livestream technology to bring performances into the homes of patrons when in-person attendance was not allowed. The Symphony recently unveiled its theme for the 2021-22 season–“Dance Mix!”–an eclectic and diverse program of energetic, upbeat, and inspiring works.
The Mansion Theatre for the Performing Arts 189 Expressway Lane • Branson themansiontheatre.com • 417-385-1118
From its grand opening in 1993 until today, The Mansion Theatre for The Performing Arts in Branson has remained a landmark for exceptional entertainment and world-class theatrical excellence. Next month, The Mansion Theatre brings to the stage “Wahzhazhe: An Osage Ballet” on Aug. 6 and 7. And, later in 2021, Broadway stars will perform favorite Disney princess songs in “Disney Princess: The Concert.” See their ad on page 16.
