Refrigerator Notes In this issue.. Happy Fall, y’all! Ahhh...This is my kind of weather! A little crispness to the air, maybe the fleeting scent of a wood-burning fireplace. It’s definitely chili season in the kitchen! Cooler weather also means it’s playtime for Jasper the wonder dog. I’ve written about him before. He’s a 2-yearold Siberian husky mix who spends most of his afternoons curled up snoozing on his dog bed under my feet. Cold-weather bonus: He keeps my feet warm! He’s more playful at the dog park and on walks in the cooler weather. It’s also easier to fit in a walk or two during the day because we aren’t confined to early and late hours. Jasper joined our family in June 2020, during the pandemic. My guess is there are more than a few of our reader families who adopted pets during that time. We’ve dedicated this issue to Kids & Pets. Regardless of the species or breed, pets bring joy to our lives. And, our bigs and littles learn responsibility and compassion through caring for animals. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the two resident cats of the Page Garden, Amani and Jax. They test the boundaries of my desktop and gravitational theory on a regular basis. They are still adjusting to having our goofy boy Jasper around. So, here’s to cold, wet noses, purrs, fluttering feathers, and aquariums of all sizes. We. Love. Our. Pets! Hug your kids. Hold hands and take a walk. Say, “I love you” every day. Read aloud together every day. And, always be good to yourself. You’ve got this! |

Pick the right pet for your family by Julia Bumberry, DVM Pets can be a wonderful addition to a family, but how do you know which pet is right for you? An important consideration is your family’s lifestyle and what you want from your new pet. Are you looking for an all-around companion to accompany you on adventures? Or, do you envision something else entirely? Some pets need a lot of activity and room to run to prevent them from getting bored and exhibiting destructive behaviors. Others prefer to cuddle and be couch potatoes. Be sure to consider the age of your potential pet. If you adopt or purchase a puppy or kitten, they will be more energetic and need more frequent bathroom breaks and supervision than a full-grown adult dog or cat. The monetary responsibility of bringing a new pet into the family is also crucial to recognize. Pets are a long-term financial commitment, but the timeline can Remember to say, “I found it in Kids Directory!”

vary depending on the animal. For example, a gerbil or a fish will not typically live as long as a dog or cat. But, a parrot or tortoise may be in your family for a couple of generations. Larger pets are typically more expensive for food, medication, and supplies. And, just like humans need medical visits to our doctors, most all pets require some level of veterinary care. Understand allergy or spacing restrictions before bringing a new pet home. Hypoallergenic breeds are an option for people with fur sensitivities and allergies, but so are some of our not-so-furry 14

friends such as snakes, lizards, and fish. Smaller “pocket pets” such as hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits can also be a good option if you have limited space. Regardless of the type of pet your family is interested in, do your research on the breed’s typical behaviors, health conditions, nutrition needs, and activity level. Most shelters and breeders will allow a trial period with a potential new family member to make sure they fit in well and get along with any other pets already established in your household. Your local veterinarian would be happy to discuss concerns and questions you have about your potential pet. They are available to help and enjoy meeting your new and current companions.

Dr. Julia Bumberry is a veterinarian at Allphin Veterinary Clinic in Branson West. She is a graduate of the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. This is her dog Ivy.

Fur, feathers, or fins— Companion animals can benefit the entire family Having a pet in our home does more than just make us happy. Pets can make positive impacts on a child’s development, while also improving the entire family’s physical and mental well-being. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies have shown the bond between people and their pets

can improve quality of life by decreasing blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety and symptoms of PTSD. Pets also offer opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities, better cognitive function in older adults, and opportunities to socialize for all ages. Pets do have their own needs. When children set up and follow a schedule for feeding, grooming, and exercising a pet, they learn life-long lessons of responsibility while finding stability and predictability in life. For anyone who lives with anxiety or depression, these routines offer an important feeling of control. Living with a pet can reduce the feeling of being alone. A dog or cat is always there with a greeting when we come home at the end of the day. Pets can also help us connect with other people around us, as you may run into neighbors while on a walk. Scientists from Washington State University found simply petting a familiar dog lowers our heart rate, slows breathing and relaxes muscle tension––

all while decreasing levels of cortisol levels, a significant stress hormone. Those experts say that effect can happen in as little as 10 minutes with a pet. Our pets are more than sweet and snuggly; they are scientifically proven to improve our lives and take care of us while we care for them.
