Refrigerator Notes In this issue.. Reading through the pages of upcoming fall festivals took me down a path of nostalgia. I recently had the opportunity to spend a Sunday afternoon and dinner time with my 85-year-old parents in my childhood home. The greatest part about this house is that my father and grandfather built it... literally built it with their hands, tools, and know-how. I pedaled my tricycle with a wagon tied to the back post through the framing that would become walls to pick up lumber scraps that laid about. I have the tricycle now, and there is a piece of the string that held that wagon still attached. In my old bedroom, my mother still proudly displays cross-stitch work that I did as a kid and entered into the fair. Several of the framed pieces have the blue ribbon and Best-of-Show ribbon prizes attached. I remember fondly the summers we spent canning grape jelly and green beans to enter into the fair. The beans required a special attention to detail—snapped uniformly and packed neatly in the jars to win a prize. We baked banana and poppy seed breads and toffee nut bar cookies. My mother used the occasion of the fair to give me projects to do during the winter and spring to keep me busy. It was a different tempo of life that I often miss. It wasn’t “easier” or “better”...just different. I hope you make time to take your kids to one of the festivals. Take a few minutes to admire the hand-crafts and baked goods. Hug your kids. Treat yourself to a few quiet moments. And, most of all, be good to yourself. |
