A new year! A fresh start. A reset. A do-over. We may approach the new year and resolutions in different ways. If one of your goals is weight loss or healthier living, check out the article on page 16 from our friends at Ozarks Regional YMCA with five tips to help you achieve your resolution. Honestly, some of their advice can be applied to other non-health related resolutions. There are a few new things happening with Kids Directory, too. First, some of our distribution locations are changing. So, visit our website or watch our Facebook page for announcements for new locations to pick up your monthly copy. We have a new advertising section, “Marketplace Direct,” for sales representatives who work with direct sales companies. Check out the details on page 30. From everyone associated with Kids Directory, we wish you and your family a prosperous 2019 and thank you for your continued and loyal readership.

5 Tips for a Successful Resolution Make some sacrifices. Buy tuna packaged in water rather than oil. Switch from whole milk to 2% milk or try low-fat and reduced-fat products. Your food plan should not omit food groups (such as sugars or fats); depriving yourself will bring back your old eating habits. Train. Regular exercise is associated with health benefits: reduced risk of some cancers, lower blood pressure, and enhanced mood. Physical fitness is an important factor in weight loss. Slowly increase your workouts. This will prevent burnout and give your body time to adjust to the change. Remember, the weight did not appear overnight, so taking it off will take time. The Y can help you design a plan using activities you enjoy and create the best workout for you. Develop a hobby. Read a good book or do a crossword puzzle. Try needlepoint or cross-stitch. Keeping your mind and your hands busy will prevent eating out of boredom.
Have you set a New Year’s resolution? The top resolution among Americans is to lose weight. The Ozarks Regional YMCA offers a variety of programs which allow you to discuss goals and help you create a plan. You can achieve weight loss with a few simple steps. Set attainable and specific goals with a time frame. For example, “I will walk four days a week for 15 minutes,” or “I will eat three vegetables every day.” Track your progress in a journal. Although the weight will not fall off immediately, a journal will help you visualize your improvements and stay motivated. Change one habit. Instead of eating a doughnut every day for breakfast, switch to a whole-wheat English muffin with jelly. This will reduce your daily caloric intake, and the whole grains will keep you fuller longer. Energy balance is the key to weight loss. You must burn more calories than you consume. For healthy weight loss, doctors recommend losing two pounds or less per week.
