Phosphorus Ban for Washington Lawns The year 2013 brings some changes to lawn care management in Washington State. HB 1489, which takes effect January 1, 2013, restricts the use of fertilizers with phosphorus from use on residential lawns with some exceptions: Phosphorus can be used in newly establishes lawns, when preforming lawn renovations, and when a laboratory soil test shows soil to be deficient for phosphorus.

The bill is aimed at getting phosphorus out of waterways, where it results in algae blooms and causes water-quality problems.

Phosphorus, one of the macronutrients, is essential for the general health and vigor of all plants. Among the benefits it provides are stimulated root development, increased stalk and stem strength, overall vigor and increased resistance to plant diseases as well as nitrogen metabolism. Phosphorus is the middle number on your fertilizer bag and will read 0 on the lawn fertilizers you buy this year.

Fertilizers with phosphorus can legally be used in flower beds and gardens and will still be sold in stores and garden outlets. Paul Tukey, an international leader in the green movement noted: “Without phosphorus, in other words, we wouldn’t have lawns as we know them. Any grass that did grow would be wispy and of pale, pinkish green in color. Lawns wouldn’t have the ability to make it through any drought stress of summer or long, harsh winters, either, without phosphorus — so it’s traditionally been added to our fertilizer mixes in somewhere between one-tenth and equal measures to the nitrogen that’s included in the bag.”1 Will it really be this bad? Probably not right away. It will be like washing clothes in phosphate free laundry detergent or dishes in phosphate free dish soap. Not as good as before, but tolerable. In the Columbia Basin local soils, phosphorus is normally found at moderate levels. There are cultural practices you can adopt to help your lawn stay green and healthy. Mulching the clippings and leaving them on the lawn will help retain nutrients like phosphorus. Protect Your SIGHT What you need to know about vision health Everyone’s vision changes as they age, but some changes could indicate a more serious problem. Age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma are two of the most common eye diseases in older Americans. As many as 11 million people in the United States have some form of macular degeneration, and more than 3 million have some form of glaucoma, according to the BrightFocus Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving brain and eye health. There may also be an association between untreated poor vision and cognitive impairment, which is another reason to take steps to protect your eyesight.

Age-related Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration is an irreversible destruction of the central area of the eye’s retina, known as the macula, which leads to loss of the sharp, fine-detail, straight-ahead vision required for activities like reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing the world in color. It’s the leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 years of age and older, and the second highest cause of irreversible blindness in the world.

Glaucoma Glaucoma is actually a group of eye disorders. They have few symptoms in the early stages, but eventually the optic nerve is damaged, leading to loss of side vision or complete blindness.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness among African Americans and Hispanics in the U.S. Between the ages of 45 and 64, glaucoma is fifteen times more likely to cause blindness in African Americans than in Caucasians. All people older than 60 are at a greater risk of developing glaucoma than people who are younger.

Best Practices for Healthy Vision • Eat right to protect your sight, especially fruits and vegetables, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

• Exercise daily to improve your immune system and blood pressure and your eye and brain health as well as to maintain a healthy weight.

• Quit smoking. Toxins found in cigarette smoke have been linked to an increased risk for developing macular degeneration.

• Wear high-quality sunglasses with a rating of 99- or 100-percent UV-A and UV-B protection. Also don a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.

• Have a comprehensive dilated eye exam regularly from an eye doctor.
