My boyfriend claims he’s a year round triathlete-baseball in the spring and summer, football in the fall, and basketball in the winter, which he watches from the comfort of his recliner. He was athletic until he graduated from college. Now he’s an overweight couch potato. I want him to get involved in sports we can do together. Any suggestions? Our wedding date is riding on when he can fit into his good suit again.

Dear Fretting Why not get him inspired to be a real triathlete? Download some of the past programs of Ironman competitions in Hawaii and watch them with him. With the right spark, they might ignite the athlete and competitor in him. Besides, it’s a great way to achieve an enviable hard body. You both will look good on your wedding day. Three months later…
Dear Krabby: I took your advice, watched several triathlon videos with my boyfriend, and got him interested in the sport. We started with three workouts a week and soon moved up to five. I must admit I’m a bit sore all over, but I’m not complaining. We’re having a blast running,

swimming, and biking together. Our first sprint race is in six weeks. Any more advice? —Soon-to-be Triathlete. Dear Soon-to-be There are plenty of how-to books and articles for beginner triathletes, so I suggest you learn what you can from reading. Keep this mantra in mind: don’t do anything different from training on race day. Set realistic goals, but don’t be disappointed if you don’t reach them. Savor the atmosphere of the race like it’s a big party. Be proud of yourself when you cross the finish line. continued on page 20

Occupation: Defense contractor by day. Chairman of the USAT Age Group Committee by night. Favorite local restaurant: If I tell you, it will get crowded, but I would be pleased to name a favorite restaurant in another part of the city (Piatti, La Jolla Shores). When not training, I enjoy: Surfing, music, family activities. Before I became a triathlete I was: I played basketball, surfed (free surf and competitive surfing), Frisbee golf, swam, biked, rode motorcycles and dirt bikes. Who or what inspired you to start triathlons? Friends told me for years I should give triathlons a go since I was doing SBR activities anyway. And I used to go to Tugs early in the morning after dawn patrol surf sessions for breakfast burritos and beer (see! I already had post workout nutrition figured out). When my wife and I started dating, I found out that her brother had done a couple of Ironman races, so I decided to take the plunge. I started out competing as an athletic challenge but the motivation and stories of the people I’ve met is what keeps me involved.

Pre and/or Post event ritual: Pre race: always get transition mapped out in your head, especially if it’s a cold morning! It’s surprising how easy it is to forget where your stuff is parked when you’re cold and starved for oxygen. Post race – maybe a couple of beers while sitting in the Jacuzzi. Favorite event/tri: Vineman 70.3 – awesome race, very tough course and highly competitive, but a very fair test of all three disciplines.

Favorite segment (swim, bike or run): I’m a good swimmer, a very average cyclist and a slow runner, so my fun workouts are in the pool, but the ones I really need to nail are on the road or at the track. PR/Best race (or any split time): I was first overall in the aquabike division of the 2014 Mission Bay Tri. This year’s athletic goal: Get on some podiums. Can’t race without: My support crew (my wife). She has been very supportive and understanding of my triathlon habits. Most embarrassing or disastrous moment: Spring Sprint (I think it was 2005) – I put my road bike helmet on backwards in T1 and wondered why everyone I passed on the bike was staring at me. And then wondered why there were no pictures of my bike leg until I looked in the “lost and found” photo bin and saw proof of my crime. My equipment: Wetsuit: Xterra Vendetta Bike: Cervelo P3 w/a Quarq pm Shoe: ASICS Equipment wish list: Garmin 920XT. Best advice: Get a coach if you are doing long course races – and

TCSD CONVERSATION WITH: By Craig Zelent

Steve Banister

I had the pleasure recently of talking triathlon with Steve Banister, our most recent President. Steve did an awesome job as President the past two years. Please join me as we get to know a great guy who has given selflessly to the club and our community, and who also happens to be a pretty fast triathlete. Craig: What sports did you do prior to triathlon? Steve: Soccer, baseball, football, track, and swimming growing up. Football, baseball and track to a much lesser extent. I probably fit best with the swim team and therefore chose to stick with them in retrospect.

I didn’t race again until my first year of college. I was fourth overall in a local small sprint race called Top Cop Triathlon in Temple Terrace (Tampa, FL). I rode bikes a bit growing up but never had an opportunity to race. I’ve heard that you’ve raced the Ironman distance once. How did that come to be and what was your experience like? Steve: One of my first meetings with the club was at Road Runner Sports. I remember they had a deal where anyone could buy a pair of Avia shoes and get a free entry into a list of races. I was “funemployed” at the time and wanted to do an Ironman, so I went and signed up before the sales pitch was over. I selected the Vineman Full Triathlon and set off to train for it. There were still several months to train, but I went out a week or two later and came pretty close with

CONVERSATION, continued event.
You were part of the inaugural TCSD Ambassador Team this year. How does that group contribute to the club and what does it mean to you to race in the Tri Club kit? Steve: In taking an in depth look at how club numbers have fluctuated so much over the last ten years it occurred to me that TCSD is finally experiencing what many other clubs around the world do. Competition from other clubs. Nearly every bike shop and coach in San Diego now have their own team. This change has reduced the overall number of members in the club, but improved access to the sport and the quality of organizations in the sport. The goal of the ambassador team is to represent the club in the best possible way by giving back to the volunteers and athletes that represent the club in all the best ways. I’m glad to be part of the team and humbled by the accomplishments of the other members.
Your two years as President of the TCSD have recently ended. We are grateful for your service. What would you like people to know about the day to day operation of the Tri Club that they might not be aware of?
Steve: Volunteers do what they want. We have the best volunteers because we empower members to improve the club, not because someone tells them what they should do. Our volunteers have the great ideas and see them through when we step aside. Sometimes things don’t work out as planned, but often they work out much better. The position of President is more about building good working relationships than dictating policy or creating rules. Upon looking back, what were some of the greatest challenges the TCSD overcame during the past couple of years? Steve: Focusing on the club members we have rather than pretending that the total number of people is our ultimate goal. We put on more races and events in the last two years than ever before. My personal goal was to provide members with the best possible value for their membership.
What would you like to see changed in the Tri Club? Steve: I think the Yahoo group should be replaced with something more conducive to discussion about the club and triathlon. We should make an effort to more closely align our club goals with the goals of USA Triathlon. I’d like to see the club convert-

ed to a 501(c)3 because it represents the best long term interests of the club. I also think we should change the logo. Just kidding!
How about the sport in general? If you could waive a magic wand over all of triathlon, what would you change? Steve: It’s tough to see everything take on a more corporate feel, but I think it’s in the best interest of survival for the industry. The small off the path races out there are really special but don’t do a lot to support a professional contingent. It’s great to see the NCAA bringing triathlon on as a women’s sport. I hope that trend continues with the men’s side to support US efforts at the Olympics and fostering a healthy and fan friendly format.
What was the most rewarding aspect of being the TCSD President? Steve: Interacting with the members. Triathlon is a great outlet before or after spending a day at the good ole office desk. Our club members are great for helping to keep things in perspective.
Craig: You had a great team of support help. Who were some of the people who made the TCSD look as good as it did during your watch?
Steve: Erin Hunter, my girlfriend, has to be at the top of the list. She’s done a lot for the club as well, but she really helped me to make good decisions and make sure I kept things in perspective. Florian Hedwig really made being in the club a fun place to be. All my best friends are in the club and many have helped along the way.

Craig: What are your future goals and aspirations in the sport of triathlon? Steve: Challenge Roth is my next big endeavor after the initial 1am PST Challenge Signup. I’d like to run the entire marathon. Anything else would be a bonus.
Steve, you did a tremendous job as President of the TCSD. On behalf of all our members and others in the community, thank you for a job well done! And thank you for sharing your story with us. Now it wouldn’t come off. As I pulled, I swerved with a gust of wind. In a nanosecond I was on the ground. M y first thought was ”How stupid. Why didn't I just pull over to the side and unwrap the gel.” My second thought was ”Is there any way I can finish the race?” How embarrassing. All the cyclists I had passed were whizzing by, and people were saying things like “Oh my God” and ”that's really bad” or just
I aged up this year, so I signed up for Cozumel hoping for a return ticket to Kona. Plus we could do a post race tour of the Yucatan. I lucked out. I was the only competitor in the 75-79 age group. All I had to do was finish. The race started out great. The swim had a staged start with the old guys right after the pros. I had a fast (for me) swim and I was out of the water and on the bike with half of the bikes still in T1. Incidentally, the water is warm and crystal clear with lots of tropical fish swimming below. The bike course consisted of three laps around the Island with a Al (righ) and wif, Steve, enjoy ing Cozumel. ferocious head wind each lap on the backside of the island. It felt like my shoulder was dislocated, but it was the side with the pad still intact. The ambulance people were ready to load me up, but after some discussion (they in Spanish, me in English, lots of hand motion), I convinced them that I was going to continue, or at least ride to T-2. Needless to say, I stopped on the side of the road for all my drink and gel needs. Once back on the bike, it was slow and steady for the final 20 miles to T-2. My wife was waiting at T-2, and by this time my tri suit was mostly red, and I had bandages all over. She was shocked, but she knew instantly that I did it to myself as I just made kind of a sheepish shrug. The T-2 tent was jam packed with no available seats. I asked for a doctor, and it seemed like all 200 eyes in the tent were staring at me. Several men jumped up and offered their seats. The doctor and two assistants helped me remove my trisuit, and I sat there naked while they removed all the bandages, rinsed and treated the wounds and re-bandaged me. Fortunately I had thrown in a singlet and shorts - as almost an afterthought, and I'm thankful I did. Sixteen minutes later, they had me on my feet and, I headed out of the tent. Several men cheered as I left the tent. It gave me chills. The run course was three laps. I was covered in bandages, and my knee had swollen to grapefruit size. I managed to slow-jog most of the first lap although I was down to 15:30 pace. Some of the ad out of T2. athletes who had . Plus, frankly I was out of gas. My wife was running along the sidelines telling people to look for me. I was easy to spot. People were shouting ”go Al“ and other words of encouragement from everywhere. It gave me goose bumps. I knew I could make it to the finish before mid-

It was a very long day, but I finally made it to the finish at 16:39, and there were still a few athletes coming in behind me. USAT NATIONAL CHALLENGE COMPETITION (NCC) This year there are four volunteer leading the club to victory: Julie Dunkle is the cheerleader for December’s swim portion of the competition, encouraging all participants to swim, swim and keep swimming. Janis Intoy is January’s bike promoter, motivating the TCSD teams to bike and bike often, including arranging club rides to rack up the miles. Tracy Cohen-Peranteau is the run promoter for February. From training runs, to running races, as well as the treadmill (aka dreadmill), all runs are important in February and Tracy will drive this home all month long. Last but not least is the NCC Manager, Alexis Barnes. Alexis is helping manage the competition. She did a great job recruiting and assembling the teams and is working with the leaders to make sure they have their leaderboard info. Even if you’re not signed up, you can follow along and see your friends and fellow triathlete’s posts on the special NCC 2014/15 Facebook page Julie set up. Every winter triathletes around the nation are at risk of losing their fitness, gaining weight and otherwise falling off their training schedules. Well, thanks to USAT and the National Challenge Competition (aka NCC) and a little friendly competition between triclubs, we can maintain our fitness levels and be race ready when the season starts. The NCC is a competition between triathlon clubs from around the country who go head-tohead from December to February by logging training miles in all three disciplines, swim, bike and run. December is swim month, January is bike month, and February is run month. Each registered participant logs their miles on the NCC website, and points are totaled for the club’s teams. Generally, there is a super high mileage team as on Team 1, a moderate mileage team as on Team 2. Last year, TCSD came in first place! Roger Leszczynski did a great job pumping up the teams, keeping them motivated to keep on swimming, biking and running all month long.

and Nancy Morris responded to my discovery and offered other leads. Through Cathy Holl, I located Don Shanahan, and through Ken Flagg, I located Bill Phillips (winner of the first triathlon). Nancy Morris shared the San Diego Track Club newsletters, which gave me more indepth history of how the first triathlon race came together, as it was a club sponsored event. At a social, I approached Bob Babbit with the idea of interviewing Jack, Don and Bill. Jack was not well, so Bob interviewed Don and Bill. Don’s interview can be heard at http://competitorradio.competitor.com/?s=Don+Shanahan and Bill’s interview can be heard at http://competitorradio.competitor.com/2013/04/bill-phillips/) The club president at the time, Thomas Johnson, helped roll out the red carpet with VIP passes where these pioneers had the best seat in the house to watch the sport in the high definition of a technologically advanced operation with the fastest athletes from around the world, all in the back drop of Mission Beach. Bill could not attend, but Jack and Don were very impressed by what they saw. It was to be the last triathlon race that Jack watched. In 2014, we came together for the 40th Anniversary celebration at Fiesta Island. Betty’s Facebook friends were pleasantly surprised about Jack’s place in history. Coincidently, Kristen Cairns caught my
post and said that her father, Tom Rothhaar, was in the first triathlon and we immediately made plans to gather up the old friends. Truly, these pioneers must have been chosen to create something for others to enjoy. In a time when most people post every little accomplishment, it was a humbling to realize that these pioneers lived quietly about their place in history. By the 40th Anniversary, Jack Johnstone had entered assisted living after three hospitalizations earlier in the year. Betty regretted that she could not attend because of a prior travel commitment. Kristen Cairns helped me locate the Johnstone children. She brought her dad, Tom Rothhaar, from out of town to join our group at the 40th Anniversary. To commemorate them in spirit as not all 46 participants were located by the time of the event, I designed 46 race bibs and numbered them accordingly with the names and finish time on the bibs. Since Jack Johnstone finished in sixth place, race bib number six was given to each of his children who attended, including Joel Johnstone, Leysa Gentillon, and Kristin Baez. Race bib number nine was given to ninth finisher Tom Rothhaar and his daughter Kristen Cairns. Race bib number 30 and 35 were given to John and Judy Collins, although we recently learned that was an

TRIBAL LEADERS, continued error in John’s finish time. It was reconciled with Betty Johnstone and Don Shanahan that John Collins finished 22nd with a time of 71 minutes. In partnership with Deborah Jones, Ken Flagg, Rachel Wills at Moment Cycle Sport, Nytro Multisport and with Paula Munoz’s help, a 40th Anniversary gift bag was presented to the pioneers to acknowledge their honored presence. Bob Babbit gave a rousing introduction before the pioneers walked down memory lane, watching the event from the transition and swim area. On shore, Joel Johnstone recalled how his father, Jack, recycled his old swim trophies to use as triathlon trophies. Jack had been a college All American swimmer, and had hundreds of trophies from high school and college, sitting in boxes in their garage gathering dust. Leysa Gentillon, Jack’s daughter, witnessed how he came about naming the sport. “My Dad had already determined the name of the event Triathlon, when we had the Biathlon discussion,’ recalled Leysa, “The trophy/engraver company
called our home one afternoon when my parents weren’t there and left a message saying they couldn’t find the word in the dictionary, so weren’t sure how to spell it. When my parents came home that evening we had the biathlon discussion over dinner, which was the basis of coming up with how to spell the word. My Dad simply replaced the “bi” in biathlon with “tri”. Being a math teacher “bi” and “tri” were common words to him. My Dad called the trophy company/engraver back to give them the official spelling so they could finalize the trophies for the 1st Triathlon and the word became official.” Following the 40th Anniversary, I created the Triathlon History Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/FirstTriathlo n1974/ to reunite this quaint community of pioneers. With Ken Flagg’s help, Donna Gookin who finished 41st joined in our reunion with her daughter Karen Gookin who finished 44th. Donna is a great cheerleader which reflect on how she rallied the majority of original participants from the San Diego Track Club to participate in the first race. The track club recently honored her at an awards dinner. It should be noted that the Gookin family invented the electrolyte drink mix, Gookinaid, which is still in the market today. It was the electrolyte drink that was handed out at the first triathlon. Russ Jones who has 500 plus triathlons to his name and won the triathlons that followed the historic first race, joined in the reunion too. He showed up at the anniversary in retro gear and brought the first triathlon trophy with “triathlon” engraved on it. Currently, he is being nominated for the Hall of Fame honor. Bill Phillips who won the first race checked in to say that he is doing

Dear Krabby: My first triathlon was awesome and a big learning experience. I’m saving to buy a better bike because I was way too slow on my clunker. I know I can improve, but I’ve got some issues with tendonitis and a sore shoulder. My boyfriend finished the race tenth in his age group. He was kind of disappointed he didn’t medal in his first triathlon. He’s cooking up a plan to improve his times with harder workouts and some weird diet. Should we change the way we train and eat? —Slow but Steady. Dear Slow but Steady: If your soreness doesn’t go away, then treat it as an injury and find out the causes. You might need new shoes with orthotics, a bike adjustment, and swim lessons to improve your technique. Don’t forget stretching and resting. Your boyfriend’s training plan might not work for you. Keep some of your workouts light and social with him so they’re fun. Keep your diet balanced and healthy. Miracle foods are advertising hype. Four months later…
Dear Krabby
: My second triathlon was a blast. My boyfriend missed winning a medal by a few minutes, which really annoyed him. He’s going to buy a racing bike with plenty of bells and whistles so he can cut a couple minutes off his time. He was saving that money for our wedding rings. Oh well. At least he’s not sitting around watching ball games all weekend anymore. I added a stretching class to my schedule to work out the cramps and soreness. Any other advice during these cool winter months? —Fiancée on Delay Dear Fiance: Don’t fall victim to the winter blues, stuck inside. Take a core strength class and attend yoga sessions—they’re good for the body, the soul, and the relationship with your future hubby. Three months later…
Dear Krabby:
Spring is in the air and in my step. Those indoor classes and yoga sessions really paid off. My boyfriend says yoga is too fou-fou for him. The instructor, Nick, is an outdoorsman and a triathlete, not a fou-fou kind of guy. He talks about channeling inner strength. My boyfriend thinks channeling is all in the head, and strength is all in the muscles. I’m jealous because his shaved legs look better than mine. Where is the karma in that? His next triathlon will be
Olympic distance. Is it all right if I stick to sprint distance? —Springing Forward Dear Springing If sprint distance is a good fit for you, then stick with it. You want quality, not quantity. Don’t worry about what your legs look like, only that they stay strong and healthy. Your dividends will be down the road when you see others with overuse injuries and you remain pain-free on your wedding day. One week later…
Dear Krabby: What wedding day? My boyfriend thinks he’s ready to kick it up another notch at the end of summer for a half-Ironman triathlon, 70.3 miles, that’s a two-day drive from home. Our original plan was to get married at the end of summer. He said I can do all the wedding planning because he’ll be too busy preparing for the race. The good news is he now fits in his suit. The bad news is I don’t know when he’ll wear it. Has triathlon taken his brain hostage? —Waiting Bride Dear Waiting: Success in training and racing can be addicting, especially when you see improvements. Also exercise endorphins are like opiates, so yes, it’s possible the sport has temporarily become his primary focus. After the 70.3 race, he should be ready to recover and come down a few notches in his training. Think of these next few months as his long bachelor party. October is a nice month to get married. Five months later …
Dear Krabby
: My boyfriend had a miserable half-Ironman race with bike problems, cramps, blisters, and heat. I had to hear about it for the two days it took to drive back home. I had a pretty good time until then. Nick, the yoga guy, suggested I swim part of the course after the last wave, and jog part of the course at an easy pace. I soaked up some of the essence of the race without a battle. My boyfriend battled the course and himself. I think I came out the winner. What do you think? He’s talking about flying to Australia in three months to redeem himself in another 70.3 race during the Down Under summer. —Still Waiting Dear Still: It’s good you can embrace the spiritual side of the sport. It isn’t always about the stopwatch, but it is about being in the moment. Your boyfriend isn’t ready to learn that apparently. If you don’t plan to
go to Australia with him, then use that time to reach some personal goals you set while he’s away.
ure. That goes for your training companions as well. Will you be a spring bride?

Dear Krabby: My boyfriend returned from two Dear Krabby: weeks in Australia apparently satisfied for the time being. While he was away I took a couple of long, slow runs with Nick (my yoga friend) and an all-day hike in the wilderness with him. He knows so much about nature, and he stops now and then to enjoy it. That’s missing in the rush, rush, rush of triathlons. My boyfriend brags about his fast transition times, like that’s important? I like swimming, biking, and running, but most of the time I like them when I don’t think about the clock. Is that okay for a triathlete? —Still Single Dear Still Single No one says you have to be fast. In the long run (pun intended) you’ll gravitate to the style and events that give you the most pleas-
The guy I was supposed to marry has mapped out his weekly schedule for the next eight months of training and racing with his focus on winning medals. He’ll travel all over the place for those races. That doesn’t float my boat. Nick is coaching me to be a mountain runner. We’re planning a one-day crossing of the Grand Canyon in October with a few other hardy souls. Challenge and nature and the sun as our clock. What do you think? —Running Free Dear Running Free I think you don’t need my advice anymore. You’re finding the answers on your own. May your feet be light and your heart be strong.
RACE REPORT, continued bandage removal and reapplication. For all of you wondering about Mexican medical care, all the doctors were excellent, the hospitals in both Cozumel and Cancun were brand new. The service was very efficient and professional. I want to thank the Mexican doctors and medics
who helped, all the triathletes who gave me words of encouragement, all the spectators who showed their support and my wife, Steve for her unwavering support for this race and all those races past and future.
TRIBAL LEADERS, continued to get acquainted with these pioneers. It aired Thursday, 12/5/2014. Now less than a week since the program aired the YouTube video of the documentary reached over 2,044 views, dwarfing viewership of other KPBS stories, perhaps because it offered something positive for San Diego to reflect upon. There is still a general public that knows little about the sport but the origins of the sport tell a story that is relevant about family and community support for a healthy lifestyle. It is also important for the generations of the original par-
ticipants to understand their connection because the lines of history is what preserves the integrity of an invention. I have visited Jack Johnstone a few times at the assisted living facility and will continue to do so long as I have the granted privilege. We communicated through eye contact and watched the oral history interviews, the 2011/2012 ITU race, and the 40th Anniversary introductions. The sport of triathlon is a tribal sport which various groups form a bond by various characteristics. The first tribe.
