ost vendors arrived at the bicycle swap meet early in the morning to place their bikes in racks that lined the park walkway. Latecomers propped bikes off the walkway against nearby trees and posts. Three such bikes for sale leaned on a tree a few yards from the path. A Tale of Fiction

“I’m Crank Lloyd Ride III, that’s who,” the Cannondale said. “Who are you?” “The third? Give me a brake! I’m Dusty Biker, and I’ve seen more trails and roads than you’ll ever ride. You’re probably afraid to get your tires dirty, let alone jump a few boulders.” “ I ’ v e b e e n around the block a few t i m e s myself,” the BMX said. “Kids call me Henry By Barbara Javor Fork. I’ve rolled through more mud puddles and crashed more times than either of you could ever dream of. I’ve been spray painted a half dozen times to cover my scratches and rust. That’s why you can’t see my label.” “Hmph,” Crank Lloyd Ride III said. “I’m the product of state-of-the-art engineering. I’ve got plenty of miles left in me. The two of you should hang it up and rust in peace.” “You might be big, red, and shiny, but I bet you don’t have as many good biking stories as I have,” Henry Fork said. “Do you remember your most special ride?” Dusty Biker asked. SWAP MEET “Hmph.” The shiny, crimson Cannondale puffed out its top tube. “No one will notice me today, especially with the likes of you two next to me.” To the Cannondale’s left stood an old Trek hybrid with too many scratches to count. To its right leaned an even older, beat-up BMX bike with no brand label. “Hmph,” the Cannondale said again. “I should be on one of those racks over there with the late-model tri bikes.” “And just who the hell do you think you are?” the Trek asked.
