arry and Jerry cursed their bad luck, the fickle winds, and each other for capsizing the sailboat near the rocky reefs most sailors avoided. They swam to a A Tale of Fiction tiny, desolate cay that stood a few feet above sea level, and waited to beckon a passing vessel or aircraft. As the hours passed without signs of rescue, they wandered around the small, rocky islet while they griped. “If Betty Lewiston hadn’t dumped me, we’d be married now, and I’d be working for her father’s company,” Larry said. “But she decided to become a triathlete, and every weekend she was off swimming, biking, and running. It’s no wonder I started drinking and sailing.” Jerry kicked a rock. “If Justin Kohlner hadn’t given me an F in history, I wouldn’t have lost my scholarship, and I’d be in law school now. Instead, I’m a bum sailing the seven seas with you and Captain Morgan.” Larry bent down to pick up an object. “Look at this. It’s an ancient oil lamp.” He shook it and watched a cloudy image of a genie emerge from the spout. “Hey, can you get us back home?” “I am the genie of lost souls,” the presence said. “I can grant two wishes before I disappear
forever. I have the ability to let souls escape from sunup to sundown. Good souls don’t wander far. For people with damaged souls who sin and betray others, who lie to cover up, and who act By Barbara Javor as their own judge and jury—if they can’t recapture their souls before darkness falls, they may be doomed to search for them forever.” “I know just who needs her soul lost,” Larry said. “Betty Lewiston.” “And Justin Kohlner,” Jerry said. “They betrayed us.” “Then I shall do as you ask tomorrow at dawn.” The genie disappeared.
Betty Lewiston awoke the next morning before dawn, ready for the Gardentown triathlon. A sense she had forgotten something tugged at her, but she had checked and re-checked her gear the previous night. She drove in the parking lot just as the sky was turning light. The man parked next to her looked familiar, but she didn’t know his name. He stood staring at his bike and bag. “Is something the matter?” Betty asked as she unloaded her gear. continued on page 18

TCSD CONVERSATION WITH: By Craig Zelent
”

Thomas Johnson
I have wanted to do this interview for a long time. Life finally slowed down enough for me to sit down and talk triathlon with former TCSD President, Thomas Johnson. It was worth the wait. I hope you’ll enjoy the story behind the man who very successfully steered our club’s course over the past couple of years. Craig: What was your athletic background before you got involved in triathlon? Thomas: I grew up swimming in the pool, ocean and body surfing at the beach and couldn’t wait for our weekend trips and summer vacations on Balboa Island in Newport Beach as a kid. My father 1996. loved sailing and was a huge fan of Our masters swim & spin s. ng lu with aqua water sports. He made my brothers, Born coach, Kevin Bree, suggested one sisters and I all swim out to the buoys in afternoon while I was lounging at the pool that Newport Harbor each year to prove our water- I should put my training to the test and do a man capabilities before we could be left alone to Triathlon! I burst out laughing! He wondered swim and play in the bay, use the sailboat what I thought was so funny. I told him I (Sabot), and our 50lb homemade 1960’s paddle thought there was a huuuuge difference board. The “swim test” was to swim from the between doing a triathlon and taking a one hour shore out to the first set of anchored boats and spin class and swimming a few thousand yards touch or go around the buoy. No pulling up in the pool a few times a week. I started talking short! I was also really into “Action Sports” about the ONLY triathlon I knew (Hawaii growing up: Skateboarding & BMX. I made the Ironman) and confirming the distances for each whole transition in skateboarding from steel discipline. I hadn’t run orridden a bike in 20 wheels to clay to polyurethane. In my early cor- years, since I had a horrific crash in 1980 (nine porate career I played a lot of golf and that was fractures including a skin puncturing compound really my sport before triathlon. fracture) in my left forearm. He then started Craig: How did you get your start as a triath- laughing just as hard as I had. He said you don’t have to do an Ironman to do a triathlon and lete? Thomas: I got into triathlon by accident in the there are other distances in the sport. He mensummer of 2001. The high tech start up I was tioned that the Sprint Distance at the Mission working for in Boston collapsed and I suddenly Bay Triathlon was just a month away. It soundfound myself with a lot of free time. I had been ed like a great idea. I signed up the next day and swimming at the Cove for years and recently proceeded to build a bike from scratch using a taken up masters swimming and the new craze borrowed frame and a combination of new & of spin classes at the Sporting Club in UTC in

CONVERSATION, continued used spare parts. That bike was a 61cm frame. Later I was properly measured and fitted for the 56cm frame I currently ride. Next I acquired a pair of running shoes at Road Runner Sports. Then I spent the next three weeks “training” and finished the 2001 Mission Bay Tri in just under 1 hour 45 minutes. (2002 MB Tri 1:13) I was nearly dead last in my age group but hooked on triathlon and endurance sports! I signed up and did Catalina Triathlon in November 2001 and then had to wait 6 months for the next Triathlon in San Diego. There really was an off season for TCSD and triathlon back then.
Craig: Please also tell us how you came to join the TCSD. Thomas: I first met folks from TCSD swimming at the Cove in the late 90’s. I thought they were crazy and ALL training for Ironman distance tri’s. Jim McCann (TCSD President at the time) started up the last Friday of the month potlucks at the Cove which is now a hallowed summertime tradition for club members. Back then TCSD used one baby Weber grill for the entire group. Only one or two members could grill at a time. Jim offered me a few hamburgers over the summers which I loved. Food. The first ingredient of “TCSD’s Secret Sauce”. I was waiting for the club to start showing up again at the Cove in the spring of 2002. When they rolled in that May I ran up and asked “How do I join the club?” Jim hand-

ed me a newsletter and the last page was the membership application. I filled it out and paid right there. My next question to Jim was the fatal one and led to my long term volunteering in the club. “When is the first Pot Luck?” He put his hand on my shoulder and said “I have a job for you”. I was the Pot Luck Captain in 2002 and 2003. Next I helped with the club’s social activities for a couple of years until I was lucky enough to become the Open Water Swim Director in 2007. I led the La Jolla Shores Monday night swims and La Jolla Rough Water & Gatorman summer training sessions through 2012. I was elected President in September 2009 and served until August 2012. I am enjoying my retirement from the leadership role in the club. After a nice fall/winter break I’m stoked to be enjoying the club’s first class workouts, meetings and special events. After 12 years it is still great to be a member of the club!
Craig: You really did a great job as TCSD President! What things got accomplished during your three years in the position? Thomas: Thank you. One of the main motivators that inspired me to run for office was I wanted our great club to be easily recognized at events like the awesome club we were. At the time it was very difficult to identify a club member during a race in our kits and find the club booth at expos. We had about 15 white pop up
tents in storage and most of them were broken and in pieces. I had a vision for what I wanted to achieve but after consulting with some design folks I realized we needed to update the club logo in order to

design the branded materials to showcase our club. I reached out to Fuston Creative (Arch & Christy) for some logo design ideas and they delivered. Using our new logo (third version since the club was created) we updated and unified all the club marketing materials and invested in quality pop up tents, table covers, flags, car decals, uniforms & social media sites. Now it is super easy to see and recognize the club at events at home and away and see and cheer on your fellow club members while training and competing in our uniforms. Secondly we made a complete redesign and added a ton of functionality to the club website. We automated our membership application and renewal features; online race registration; member profiles; our galleries; and so much more I can’t remember all the enhancements. John Hill, our VP & CIO, personally led and implemented this major upgrade.
I can’t say enough about how proud I am that we were able to lobby and assist USA Triathlon in convincing the ITU to bring one of their eight major races back to the United States and choose San Diego to host it. The club showed up in major numbers in all areas: members racing; members volunteering; 25 members in leadership roles as ITU Captains managing the critical areas of putting on a world-class first time event for TCSD in San Diego. TCSD dominated the large club division and captured First Place in the Triathlon Club Challenge. We made some significant changes to our Sponsorship Program for companies looking to promote their brands to our membership and added a brand new category for Race Directors to promote their races to the club. These changes resulted in a significant increase of killer merchandise, vouchers, and race entries to our monthly raffles and provided us the ability to reward volunteers who have made significant contributions to the club with a comp entry to a race and so much more. Finally we tackled the seriously outdated club bylaws project. Rob Kornegay and John Hill spent a ton of hours bringing the bylaws up to code and current law and in alignment with how the club was and is run. It’s a solid frame work for running the club and providing a biannual leadership change while retaining some conticontinued on page 12

and time to pour my heart and soul into the club living my endurance sports dream! Yes. I put my career on hold for a few years but they were three awesome years I will always cherish and feel great about! When you love what you’re doing it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. I also got to meet the leaders, legends and innovators of Triathlon and Endurance Sports from around the world. Shhh…Many of them live right here in San Diego!
Craig: You had a great team of support help. Who were some of the people who made the TCSD look as good as it did during your watch? Thomas:The club has and always has had an amazing team of people working in front of the camera and behind the scenes creating the magic of TCSD. First, I would never have made it or achieved the results we did without John Hill. John is a pillar of reason and common
sense. When things blew up (and that can happen occasionally), John was there to provide guidance and help me work through the situation. Thank you John! Thank you to the entire board: Mike Plumb, Wendy Harp, and Dave McMahon all gave more than I will ever be able to give back to them. Thank you Brian Wrona, our long serving Race Director, (Tri’s, Du’s, Aquathlons and Beginner Tri’s), your commitment to a lack of sleep on the weekends is immeasurable. Thank you Bob Babbitt, the Chief Muddy Buddy of TCSD, for your undying commitment to our club and our sport - whom without we would not have all the killer monthly guests at our meetings. KAT GUNSUR Age Group: F30-34 Date: March 3, 2013 Location: San Francisco, CA Four years ago I signed up to do a triathlon with Team Challenge and had NO idea what one even was. I did my first intermediate distance with them before progressing to other sprints, marathons etc. At the time, I said I would never do a marathon, never do an Ironman and most definitely I would never do the Alcatraz triathlon. All of that just seemed u n ne c e s s a r i l y crazy. Over the years, I did a few marathons, couple half ironmans and then finally an Ironman, all things I said I never would do because I didn’t think I could. When my boyfriend Scott and I crossed the finish line I definitely thought I would feel dif-
ferent, an overwhelming feeling of emotion. Either I was completely out of it or felt like I had earned that finish and that Ironman wasn’t as hard as I thought. I knew what I had to do….I had to sign up for Escape from Alcatraz. Swimming wise, let’s just say that my first day as a triathlete I thought I would go to swim on my lunch break and not put my head in the water… wow. Swimming is a huge challenge for me, coming from a running background and teaching cycling classes throughout San Diego 10+ hours/week. When I found out I had made the lottery for

NUTRITION QUICK TIP: Fueling Your Body SPONSORS OF TCSD Just as fuel is important for your car, it is equally important for your body. Without proper fuel in your tank you will not be able to perform at your peak performance level. Calorie expenditures on the bike are on average 700 calories per hour at 15 mph, depending on weight and gender. Although some research suggests you can only absorb around 500 calories per hour, you can train your body over time to absorb more calories. Trying to refuel 500 calories an hour can be tricky, but certainly not impossible. Many companies offer nutrition for the bike and the choice will come down to a personal preference. XLAB offers a variety of aerodynamic top tube mounted bags for convenient storage as well as easy access to your vital nutrition needs. The
single most important factor in picking out a bag is to match your stem height. You want the top of the bag to be as close to the top of the stem without going higher. With a bag in this position, it has actually been proven, via extensive wind tunnel testing, to be faster than going without a bag. XLAB offers five different models of bags to accommodate nearly every bike in the world; we have a bag for you
Escape from Alcatraz I knew that it was meant to be and now was my time to do something I feared. Sharks and seals don’t scare me. It’s the cold. I’m the girl who gave up ice skating as a child because I was always in the bathroom using the hand dryer to stay warm. The countdown to Alcatraz on my phone stared at me every day. Get in the pool, go to open water practice. I dreaded it, while still keeping up with my biking and trail running. I have to say that without the Tri Club I could not have been prepared for this race. I really want to thank Brian Long for taking me on my first century ride this past summer, and Ken and Anita Flagg for ALWAYS being at the cove early Wednesday mornings and helping me do those icy cold open water swims. I had a blast at the expo meeting Pete Jacobs while buying t-shirts and snapping a few shots with my future husband Andy Potts. It was great! Then came the mandatory meeting. My nerves and anxiety suddenly started to kick in. I have NEVER had so much anxiety before a race. The race director made it so much worse when he asked if everyone had watched the informational videos and everyone raised their hands… except me. Way to prepare Kat. So I watched the videos the night before and could not sleep. But as they said, now was not
the time to be mentally weak. Getting onto the boat was an entertaining experience. I love listening in on other triathletes’ conversations, the know it alls, the braggers, and of course the people who like to give you the most minute details of the race, step by step, turn by turn. I thought to myself, “someone has to be crazy to choose this race as their first triathlon.” And low and behold I met not 1 but two ladies who were doing just that! Impressive I have to say. Talking to them while we sat for over an hour on the boat calmed me and I realized that I could do this with the support of other triathletes around me. We waited anxiously to jump and go. If you don’t jump, you’ll be pushed. We were all pumped, cheering, high-fiving and ready to do this! It was completely surreal; 20 steps to get to the edge of the boat and boom, there I was suddenly in the salty, brackish water of San Francisco. I started swimming and wasn’t really that cold, I had practiced in similar temperatures in La Jolla cove and was right on target for our first landmark and feeling great. Then suddenly… I felt like was in the movie ‘Open Water’. Literally, there was not a kayak or

RACE REPORT: Alcatraz, continued bright swim cap in sight. This was about 30 minutes in, but I turned to look at that infamous Alcatraz island, thought to myself WOW! and kept going. Unfortunately the Golden Gate bridge was a lot closer to me than I would have liked and next thing you know I was completely nowhere near the swim exit, as me and about 20 others ran .25 mile east to where everyone else was. WHOOPS I was so incredibly angry and disappointed at myself. How could I have let that happen? Of course I knew the current was bad, but it really threw me for a loop. I started another .5 mile run to the transition area in my wetsuit with 1 arm still in….I was freezing, my fingers were not working at all to remove it. At transition I was informed that there was a beard of mud all over my face so it started to make sense why everyone was staring at me so strangely. I could hardly take off my wetsuit or put on my socks but I made it out onto the hills of the Presidio. The bike was amazing, beautiful and nostalgic as I lived in the Presidio after I graduated from college. Javier Guzman and Jesse Thomas blazed by on the other side. It made me a little star struck being on the same course as them. The weather was perfect, the

sun starting to peek through as we made our way through Golden Gate Park and back to watch some runners coming up the sand ladder. It was hilly, but not terrible if you have a boyfriend who forces you to take frequent rides up Mt. Soledad on Sunday mornings. Thanks Scott. When I got to the run, I stopped beating myself up about the swim. It was then that I realized…I did it. I had conquered my fears and done this thing that I once thought was impossible. I was so sad about my time that I hadn’t taken the time to realize what this triathlon had given me. An extreme feeling of accomplishment. I looked down at my wrist and saw the word SMILE, which our National Team Challenge tri coach Skip Slade is always reminding me to do. Be grateful and smile. The run was beautiful with great views at the beach and of the Golden Gate Bridge. I enjoyed running up stairs, over rocks, ducking down low in a small tunnel (which one of my friends had scalped herself at the inaugural race, thanks for the tip Nina) and squishing along the sand of Baker Beach. The sand ladder got my confidence back up as I passed my opponents with ease. If only I
RACE REPORT: Alcatraz, continued practiced my swimming as much as my running. As I ran down the finish chute it was only the third time I had a tear in my eye. My first marathon and Ironman for some reason could not compare to this accomplishment. For me personally, this is a difficult race, while for others that may be ITU, Wildflower etc. But everyone’s experience is different. My parents had been texting me the ENTIRE time I was racing. They were so proud and telling me how tough I was, but they also couldn’t help but point out that I was the girl who refused to run the mile at school and walk instead. Amazing how things can change.

Soul Mates, continued “I have the strange feeling something’s missing,” Justin Kohlner said. “Me too, but it must just be nerves.” They chatted as they walked to the transition area, and again when they ran into each other on the beach as they waited to start the race. “I’m going to take it easy today,” she said. “Something’s telling me to be extra careful.” He nodded and looked around. “I wonder if we’re the only ones feeling funny about this race.” The swim started with the usual splashing of flailing elbows and kicking feet. Both Betty and Justin trailed, emerging on shore late in their waves. Betty was certain something was amiss, but she kept going, wheeling her bike from the transition area. The Gardentown triathlon showcased gardens in a residential part of town that hugged a hillside. The bike ride climbed gradually past the floral displays, and descended on the steeper side of the hill before returning to the bay. Betty found Justin straddling his bike at the crest of the hill. She stopped “What’s the matter?” she asked. “Why did you stop?” “I can’t explain it. I just know I mustn’t return yet.” She didn’t challenge him because she had the
same odd feeling. They both stood there, straddling their bikes, watching the other participants ride by. BOOM! The rolling repercussion of the explosion somewhere below rocked them. They mounted their bikes and sped down the hill, skidding to a halt by a giant sinkhole where a water main had burst underneath the bike course. Dozens of cyclists were caught in the mud and gushing water, and a few had fallen into the sinkhole. Betty and Justin jumped off their bikes to help pull cyclists to safety, and to direct traffic until the police and paramedics arrived. When the police had the situation under control, the muddy pair stepped aside. “I think that explosion was supposed to eat up one of us,” Justin said. “If we hadn’t waited on top ….” Betty nodded. “Or maybe we were supposed to wait so we could help as we did after the explosion.” They climbed on their bikes and rode back to the transition area. Justin fell into step beside Betty as they jogged the ten-kilometer running route at an easy pace. They tacitly agreed they were running just to finish the race. They talked continued on page 20

about the events of the morning, the strange feelings, and more. An hour slipped by before they reached the finish line, and they continued talking as they grabbed post-race refreshments. “Do you still feel funny?” he asked. “I do, as if I’m still missing something. What about you?” “Yes, but not like earlier this morning.” They gathered their gear and returned to their cars. An awkward silence ensued before Justin spoke again. “I didn’t catch your name. I’m Justin.” She smiled. “I’m Betty.” She extended her hand to shake his, and when they touched, a weight seemed to lift from her body. She furrowed her brow and looked at him. “Did you feel that?” He nodded. “Weird.” He cleared his throat. “Say, you wouldn’t want to go for a ride sometime, or maybe have dinner with me?” “Sure, either would be nice.” “I know a nice, little bistro with a balcony where we can watch the sunset. Would you like to meet there late this afternoon?” They made arrangements and parted.
Larry and Jerry greeted the dawn with grumbles after a cold, uncomfortable, and sleepless night. “I imagine Betty and Justin are wondering what happened to their souls by now,” Larry said. “At least I’ve got mine.” He slapped his chest a few times. “We better get rescued today—I’m hungry and thirsty,” Jerry said. But as morning turned to afternoon, no rescue craft appeared. “I think that genie was a fraud, pulling our leg,” Larry said, pacing back and forth. “You can’t take someone’s soul. We should have insisted he send us home.” “I bet it was a test. If we had told him to take our souls
instead, our souls couldn’t have gone anywhere. They’d be stuck on this piece of rock like us, waiting for sundown. What did we do to deserve this? If Kohlner hadn’t failed me, I wouldn’t be here now.” “Did he really fail you, or did you fail to study?” Larry asked. Jerry said nothing for a few moments. “Why did Betty really dump you?” Larry let out a loud sigh. “I was a big jerk, a big drunken jerk. Okay?” He grumbled something. Jerry glared at him. “Did you just call me a loser?” “Yeah, we both are. I’m sorry I put the curse on Betty. She didn’t deserve it, and probably Justin Kohlner didn’t either. Only selfish, drunken losers deserve this.” They separated, standing on opposite sides of the islet as the sun approached the western horizon. A few minutes later Larry whooped. “There’s a boat out there! They have to see us!” He took off his shirt and shorts, waving them wildly. continued on page 25

Jerry followed suit, except he swung them in rhythm to mimic a Morse code SOS. “Look! It’s turning towards us and flashing an SOS with a light beam.” A half hour later as the sun touched the horizon, the boat stopped just outside the reef, and people on board lowered a raft into the water. At the same moment the rumble of an approaching helicopter drowned out the sounds of the wind and waves. Larry and Jerry looked skyward, waving their arms and laughing.
Near Gardentown, as the sun touched the horizon, Betty and Justin stood on the balcony of a restaurant and gazed to the west. “Have you ever seen the green flash?” he asked. She shook her head. “If we’re lucky enough to see it, it’ll be the bookend of a memorable triathlon day.” The sun and sky cooperated, and a soft, green burst of light accompanied the sun’s farewell below the horizon. Betty looked at Justin, her eyebrows raised. “It’s gone now, and I don’t mean just the sun.” He nodded and smiled. With his arm around her shoulder, he led her back inside

Craig: If you could waive a magic wand over the sport of triathlon, what would you like to see changed? Thomas: As TCSD President I advocated hard for a race bib sale/transfer policy with all the race directors we interacted with, including and most importantly World Triathlon Corporation (Ironman). I am confident that WTC will be rolling out a sale/transfer policy in the next year as they finish updating their backend IT systems to automate this capability. I’ve seen a trend recently with online registration tools charging multiple line item fee’s for race registration. I have never been a huge fan of Ticketmaster’s “multiple fees” for a concert ticket and I’m not loving this trend. I will be supporting races and race directors with my dollars that work to keep these fees reasonable and have bib transfer policies in place. Getting to the
start line trained and healthy to race is 90% of the challenge.
Craig: How about in regards to the TCSD. What changes would you like to see for our club? Thomas: Hmmmm... I would like to see the continued integration and embracement of social media and webtools to simplify and improve the communication to club members and sponsors of events, volunteer opportunities, training opportunities, clinics, nutritional information, and general sport related information. I would start with an upgrade/replacement of the yahoo email list. My dream addition: TCSD Mobile Application for Droids and iPhones.
Craig: You have been a long time member, what are your favorite memories as a TCSD member? Thomas: My favorite memories are all at the finish line. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone who a few months earlier came to the club and had a dream of doing their first triathlon cross that line. I also cherish all of the people and friendships I developed through the club over the years. You’ve changed my life all for the better, I am so grateful for TCSD’s existence; I have grown so much and become a better person as a continued on page 28

Craig: What do you do for a living now? Thomas: I recently hung up my “independent contractor hat” and have taken a full time position at Websense in Sorrento Valley. I’m in sales and manage a territory in the Eastern time zone working 6a-3p. I’m really stoked about the opportunity and it’s perfect for all the training and racing I have planned.
Craig: Thomas, thank you for sharing your story. And my goodness – thank you so much
for all you have done for our club and community. You absolutely succeeded in maintaining the friendly local feel our club has always offered, but also in giving the TCSD international visibility. The world is now watching us for the road map on how to do all things triathlon. You will always look like an Ironman World Champion in my eyes!
