Hello, my name is Fred Whitaker and I am a triathlete, chocoholic and part time bungee jumper. I started late in life in the sport of triathlon just like I started late in life with my Navy career. I served 20 years active duty and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Looking for another challenge in life I joined the Triathlon Club of San Diego in the fall of 2006. Soon afterwards I was going underway at sea in the hull of the USS XTERRA (Full suit) and training with the Seals at La Jolla Cove. I registered for the Silver Strand Half Marathon and a few fairly chilly Club races at Fiesta Island. Most importantly I was introduced to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and super people like Jonathan Jefferson. JJ gave his all to help others. Yes, we are absorbed in our sport, but we give so much to our community. In 2007 I found myself running in the Carlsbad, La Jolla, and America’s Finest City half marathons and the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon. I also continued with club races (including duathlon’s and aquathlon’s). My first KOZ Enterprise race was the Spring Sprint in May. I was very excited, and as a result, gradually made it through the shock of hyperventilating at the 50 meter point of the swim, but I started to

relax the remaining part of the race. I was hooked on a race t h a t included three sports. I continued to race KOZ sprint triathlons, and eventually as the months and years passed, I registered for the San Diego Triathlon Classic, Chula Vista Challenge, California 70.3, Wildflower 70.3, Hawaii 70.3, Super Frog 70.3, Redman Half Ironman distance in Oklahoma City, Las Vega Half Marathon(wearing my Elvis Costume), Marine Corp Marathon, NYC Marathon and the Disneyland Dumbo Challenge. In 2008, I requested to become a security volunteer for the 2008 World Ironman Championship in Kona, Hawaii. That morning I was assigned 15 international students who volunteered to help with security, and I put them in different locations to help ensure that spectators were not going in unauthorized areas. Occupation: Student at San Marcos Middle School with a 4.0 gradepoint average. Most of my classes are honors or accelerated. My favorite subject is math. I am the only 7th grader at my school taking a geometry class. Next school year, I will be taking intermediate algebra. I would love to go to Stanford University after high school. I recently started studying the ACT test. Favorite local restaurant: Wienerschnitzel, P.F. Chang’s, Panda Express, Dominos and any place with a good jumbo shrimp cocktail. And I love the shrimp ceviche tostadas topped with avocado at the Taco Bar. When not training, I enjoy: I enjoy playing on the Internet, watching television and bowling. Before I became a triathlete I was: I was running road races, track, cross country, practicing taekwondo and on a swim team. Who or what inspired you to start triathlons? My dad, he asked me out of the blue one day if I wanted to try a triathlon. I said “sure.”

My triathlon “A” race for 2015 is the National Qualifier in Washington State (Monroe Youth Elite Cup in June). Biggest weaknes: I’m allergic to grass and tree. Cross country races usually kill me because most of these races are in a park. Biggest strength: My legs. I can hammer on the bike and the run.
Thursday 6:15 AM Pannikin Bike Ride
Favorite segment (swim, bike or run): Depends on where my current strength lies. It used to be running and now it’s the bike. I changed my swim stroke and breathing to a high-elbow catch with bilateral breathing after the 2014 triathlon season. Perhaps in a couple of years, my swim will be my favorite segment. This year’s athletic goal: Qualifying for the USAT Youth Elite National Championships, fighting in the USA Taekwondo National Championships, and racing at the USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships.

Most embarrassing or disastrous moment: I was able to avoid a big disaster/disqualification when I almost biked only one loop instead of two loops at the 2014 Chula Vista Challenge (brain fart). I started back, was almost immediately waved off and told to turn around. I turned around, finished both loops, still had the fastest bike split in my age division and won first place in my division. Can’t race without: guess I have to say my dad. I was on the TriJunior team for a few months. Now, my dad coaches me most of the time, especially in the offseason. I am currently on the San Diego Bicycle Club junior team and plan on bike racing a lot in 2015. I will probably join the San Diego Waves youth track club and race in some USATF track meets in 2015. Richard: I would like to blame my IT career for my weight but my issue is that I am a food lover and a workaholic. Being on call all the time leads to long hours and poor eating habits, and with my ability to eat just about anything, it really did not help. It is so easy to just plod along through life focused on work and family and without any real exercise.
What inspired you to change your lifestyle? Richard: It started with a doctor that was so focused on my weight and trying to make me believe I was a diabetic instead of just overweight. She went so far as to enroll me in a pro-

gram even after I did three months of testing and never was in any range showing I was a diabetic. I did start to work on my eating habits and exercise, but the real change came when my wife started training for her first triathlon. I could not walk a mile without knee pain but would walk with her and walk the block by our house as she cycled and ran. Then I got a bike so I could ride with her as she continued to train. I wanted her to have someone that could be there with her on her workouts. It just kind of steam rolled from there.
What were some of the key components that led to your successful weight loss and newfound health? Richard: It was actually a few items that really kept me on track.

First, I had not eaten a regular breakfast since starting high school. This was one of my first changes, but it took me a while to find a few items I could eat that also helped me kickstart the rest of my day. I also started actually watching and recording what I ate. Most people say this is hard, but it really isn’t, and it really helps you understand what actually goes in your mouth. There are a few really good tools out there that are free and work on multiple platforms, which allow you to record your input from anywhere. I used a tool that worked on my iPhone called “My Plate”. The last item was finding enjoyment in exercise. Before starting this process, I broke a
sweat getting my shoes on. Working out with my wife I found enjoyment in doing these three separate events and actually making some goals in the process. I had no idea that this would lead to me doing a triathlon and even running.
Did anything nearly derail your efforts? If so, how did you overcome those obstacles? Richard: I have had knee issues since I was a teenager. As I started working out, the weight was an obstacle but the knee swelling really was an issue. I went to several doctors who would drain the knee but often they would tell me to stop doing what I was doing since it was the cause of my issues. I was losing weight so I was not going to stop doing what I was doing, but it was discouraging. We found a doctor who was sports minded and he actually looked at me, learned about what I was doing and was the first one to say, keep it up, but maybe it is time to focus on other muscles. He actually pointed out that I had to do more than just pedal my bike and run. What a concept! Over the last six years, the knee issues subsided as I got lighter and stronger and became more aware of my body. I still have little issues on and off, but I no longer have major issues and appreciate that I was able to continue to move towards my goals and lose the weight.

continuing to love you during the journey. Is she the best wife ever? Richard: I can’t say enough how much Lisa has meant to me. She has supported and encouraged me even when I was discouraged and not the best person. Often she has done this by giving up her time, and that had an impact of her goals and desires.

We have had several journeys in our 24-year marriage that should have really broken us and yet she kept everything together. It is so easy to get sucked in to the machine of life and what is next with work and home and so on. Often people say you two are so lucky that you can do this together. I used to find this as an odd comment, but today I get what people are saying. I have had the benefit of a wonderful woman in my life and now we get to do things togethe,r especially as our children grow-up and become adults. It is enjoyable to do this together and learn more about each other along the way. I can’t wait to see what the rest of these years we have together bring. There are some destination events we are really looking forward to doing in the near future.
What race performances are you the most proud of? Richard: My first timed event was the Wildflower long course. I definitely had no idea what I was doing. I had never run a trail and had never run a half-marathon either. I finished this event, and when I got to the finish chute, I was hooked. It only took me a couple of hours to decide I wanted to do this again. I would like to say that my first Ironman finish was my moment but it wasn’t and only led me to want more. The real moment was watching my wife finish Ironman Arizona in 2013. It was an epic day for so many reasons, but being there continued on page 10

CONVERSATION, continued supporting her was hook number two for me and really took this whole thing to a new level. I can’t wait for this year’s event to get here as she signed up again and I look forward to this next journey.
What are some of your favorite destination events? Richard: Leadman in Bend, Oregon, was absolutely a destination event not only for the location but the race was handled so well. It is one of the events we want to do again. I would love to do Wildflower again just to see how far I have come and compare the experience. I would have to do it without camping this time since that is part of the experience the family did not really enjoy. We are now looking at events that we can do together including Ironman Chattanooga and Ironman Barcelona.
In what areas have you served as a volunteer for the TCSD? Richard: I joined TCSD in 2009 before doing any events and answered an email about some tech help for the club and showed up to help. I have been helping somewhere ever since. I tried to do several things early on by helping at the events with timing, setup and tear down, but as the training picked up, it was harder and harder to help out in those areas and still get those longer training days done. Of course, I still fit in other volunteer efforts at local events too. Helping on the website and in the digital arena really fit my schedule, and I have been doing that ever since. Today, I do website administration and manage the workout calendar, help moderate TSCD Yahoo groups and then assist on Facebook. I also work on covering race discounts and post them for members on the website. In 2014, I joined with a friend (Jim Richardson) to co-lead a running group at Lake Miramar. It really was a great way to help manage some new running goals and grow the training partner group. It has been a blast. I did decide to do more this year and ran for a club office but was not successful at getting a seat but look forward to continuing to assist and hopefully run for another seat if time allows the next time they are open.
Beyond your TCSD job, what is your triathlon related mission? Richard: I want to show people it can be done. It takes work, but it can be done and it can be fun. You can get outside, enjoy working out with others and even eat. Yes, you can watch your weight and eat too. It really gets easier when you find something you enjoy doing. It helps that we have a great group in TCSD and as you are out there in your gear, you hear “GO TCSD”; what a motivator.

I know a lot of people say “I want to be doing this when I am his age” and of course that would be great but I think what stuck out to me most is his engagement with others not just the ladies and the dogs.

What TCSD member would you like to single out as someone you really admire? Richard: A few people came to mind here, including many training partners and others who have supported me along the way. So many good choices, but I have to say Gerry Forman sticks out for me. He embodies that TCSD spirit and, of course, is always encouraging. We could be in a deep conversation during a run, figuring out some odd world issue, and he would acknowledge others, stop and pet a dog, say hello to people and still continue on like nothing happened. Too often we just go about our workouts and this really showed a different side of the process. It has had a big impact on me and, of course, I find myself saying hello during a workout while passing others and I really enjoy the feedback. Now if I can just figure out how he

goals? Richard: I want to continue to do the 140.6 races (not focused on a brand but the distance). I want to start doing other courses outside my comfort zone. It is time to start going further to races than I can drive in a day. Yes, you heard right. So far, we have driven to all our races even Bend, Oregon. We have some destination goals like Barcelona Spain, and I really want to do a 50-mile run soon. This opens up the course choices, now we just need to pick a new venue or two and work towards the goal.
Richard, the obstacles you have overcome already are very impressive. Why I Choose This Charity: I’ve been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity since my senior year of college, back in 2004, and have built homes all over San Diego, in Washington and Oregon, as well as overseas in Thailand and Haiti. Volunteering with Habitat, and the people I met while doing so, got me through a rough patch in college, so Habitat will always have a special place in my heart.

Building in Nepal had always been on my bucket list since my first international build in Thailand, when I met a representative from the Nepal chapter of Habitat there, so when this year’s Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project was announced to be headed to Nepal, I jumped at the chance to go with. The project is in November, and every volunteer has to raise $3,000 outside of travel costs, so I’m spending my race season raising funds, raising awareness and then culminating the end of my tri season with the

was also told to get all of my volunteers to the start cannon so they could see the beginning of the race. Additionally, I was assigned as a catcher but, I took time to be a spectator with my cow bell and thunder sticks at the ready to cheer on the winner. Here came Craig Alexander with 150 meters to go, so I stretched out my hand for a high five. He also stretched out his arm but we missed the high five by a few inches. After seeing Craig win I went to fulfill my assignment as finish line catcher. I caught several people along with the only person I knew in the race: our very own Mike Drury (co-owner of Pulse and HT Bikes.) My next task was to guard the NBC camera but
my most memorable moment came, as a result of being asked to be the finish line Security person from 8 pm to midnight. At the finish line standing just to my left was the Founder of the Ironman, John Collins and his wife, Judy. In front of me was our very own Bob Babbitt with the CAF Champion, and to my right stood Craig Alexander and Chrissie Wellington. I took my ball cap off and Craig signed it for me. As a result of all these great experiences in Kona, I made the decision to race in a future Ironman event. I requested to be a security volunteer at the 2009 Ironman Arizona in Tempe. Again, I performed the requested security duties all day in Tempe and then found myself

working at the finish line throughout the evening and up to midnight. I watched our very own Tracy Cohen-
area for a below average swimmer. My goal was to go out fast and try to avoid the crowd. The guy next to me asked if I was competing for a podium spot, and I told him that finishing would be great for me. Much later in the race I was all alone in the dark on the run course throwing up. I walked up a hill and saw an official. I asked her how much farther to the finish line. She told me it was over 3.5 miles and mentioned that if I didn’t start running I would not be an Ironman. I started running and knew I needed to find somebody to run with, so I approached the first person I could see who was still in the race. The person I approached was a physical trainer from Phoenix. I told him what the official said and he told me to follow him and to not stop running no matter how much it hurt. It hurt a lot but I could see the lights and hear the music, fans, and Mike Riley. I turned the last corner and somebody in the crowd yelled “Fred!” I almost jumped out of my body and sprinted to the finish line. Mike Riley called me an Ironman with eight minutes to spare. I felt I had won the Super Bowl and a Gold medal at the Olympics. But even better I was an Ironman! Incredible!! In March 2011 I was doing bike training at Fiesta Island when I received a phone call. I stopped my bike momentarily thinking it was a call from my daughter. It was my doctor at Balboa. He told me I had cancer. I asked “Can I still ride my Harley, race in triathlons and drink beer?” He said I could but that I needed to make a decision concerning the cancer. Eventually I told him I would like have the surgery in June, three days

The hours continued to pass, and it was just after 11 pm and the crowd became increasingly loud and excited. The name Rudy (Rudy Garcia-Tolson) echoed throughout. I saw numerous cameramen start to move even closer. It was getting crowded, and I began to wonder where Bob Babbitt was when he magically appeared to my right. It was crazy, and the crowd was ignited when Rudy came down the last 60 meters. Big hug for Rudy from Bob. I felt honored to just be there. That moment, Rudy became the first double above-knee amputee to finish an Ironman Triathlon. I registered for the 2010 IM Arizona the next day while in Tempe. I raced in the Marine Corp Marathon in October 2010, and that November I drove my truck to Tempe for the challenge of my life. That morning I positioned myself before the swim start in the front row together with 3,000 plus athletes. I knew this was not the recommended

after my next triathlon, which was the Hawaii 70.3. After the swim in Kona I opted not to put suntan lotion on so after the race when all the ink came off there was a very clear no. 121 on both shoulders. The day after the robotic assist surgery was performed six doctors walked into my room. One female doctor said, “I just have to ask you, why do you have those no.’s on your shoulders?” I assured her that I was not a prisoner and proceeded to tell her the story. The recovery from the surgery was going to take some time so I cancelled all my races except the 2011 Ironman Arizona. I went on to race the 2011 IM Arizona with great emotion, and to this date I completed it with my best finish time for an Ironman. As always, the finish line was electric and this one was very emotional for me. In 2012 I registered for three Ironman races starting with IM New Zealand. As I searched online for lodging and answers to all the overseas logistics involved I found Ken Glah’s Endurance Sports Travel and have traveled via his company ever since.

In 2011 I became aware of the annual Cystic Fibrosis Cycle for Life bike ride in San Diego and was introduced to Nick Kelchner, who is currently 15 years old and has been living with CF for many years. The annual bike ride helps the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raise money for a much needed cure of this disease. The charity for the 2012 IM New Zealand was Cystic Fibrosis. The Cystic Fibrosis Association of New Zealand sent me an email and asked if I wanted to have a CF buddie while in New Zealand. I start to email David Donahue from the States. David is from Wellington and has been through the many struggles of CF from a very young age up till the present. He is now in his 20’s. David still loves Ironman races and is a great Rugby fan. As a result, I went there to race and also to support a cure for CF. The day before the race there was a huge storm that came in from Australia, so the race was changed to a 70.3. I also meet the Ironman legend, Tony Jackson, who completed 28 Ironman New Zealand races. It was going to be his last race due to health reasons. Coming into the finish line I could see David, and

he presented me with the medal. It wouldn’t be the last time I would see David as the full Ironman distance in New Zealand was in my plans for the future. After the race I traveled with Ken Glah and others throughout the North Island of New Zealand. It was so much fun and an unforgettable experience. I went to Auckland and decided to do a baseline jump off the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sky Tower. I made sure I didn’t eat a big lunch that day. It was fun. In June of that year, I raced in Ironman Switzerland, which is located in Zurich. I am not a strong swimmer, so as I was coming out of the water with the last group of athletes the announc-
er said “Fred Whitaker from San Diego, CA!” Then he began to announce and express with great emotion that San Diego was the birth place of triathlon. There is no change tent in this race so, I momentarily found myself in my birthday suit (not a good site) and then off to a super challenging bike ride for 112 miles. There are two monster hills that have to be completed twice during the bike which, are called “Heart Break Hill” and “The Beast”. If you have the patience to continue reading, you will find that hills have not become my friend yet but I will be working on this in order to finish these particular challenging bike courses. Coming out of the mountains on the first loop towards Lake Zurich it was hail-

I was struggling so much on the second loop that I was actually escorted via two motorcycles out of the mountains and into Zurich. I still finished the bike portion within the time limit, and amazingly the fans in Zurich still cheered as I came around the lake. I did not complete the run, but little did I know that my Switzerland adventure was still going to be a really exciting experience. The following day I traveled with Ken Glah and others to Lucerne, Switzerland, for dinner and site seeing. The next morning I went by train to a place called “Top of Zurich”. I had my camera and Go Pro so I was taking it all in and capturing the view. As I started to walk back to the train it dawned on me that I had no pictures of myself at that location so I had no evidence to show that I had really been there. I guess I should have taken a selfie. I walked back and saw three men on mountain bikes (two
former Swiss Army Officers and an Italian). I asked them if they would take a picture of me, and afterwards they asked me what I was doing in Zurich. I was invited to drink beer at a small café at the Top of Zurich. They pointed to a mountain in the distance and said that on the other side was the location for production of the very famous Swiss Army knives. They were going to the Alps in that area the next day on a hiking route they had never been on and asked if I would like to go. They questioned if I still had the energy to hike all day in the Alps. I said yes. Thirteen hours of adventurous and fairly dangerous hiking all on video. My next race was the 2012 IM Arizona. As you can see none of my stories are short but I can simply say I don’t plan to finish late in an IM race but this one was too close for comfort. The day before the race I was talking with Sarah Reinertsen (first female above knee amputee to complete Ironman Hawaii) and told her I was wearing my old school CAF jersey on the run. At the closing

miles of the Ironman run course Sarah was going in to the finish and shouted out some encouragement to me as I was still going out with several miles to go. Eventually I finished with 3:30 to spare. The finish is captured on this video link. http://tiny.cc/rdubwx. This video also includes three ladies of whom one finished with three seconds to spare. It’s worth watching, especially the last 30 seconds. You will see me in the first part of the video as Mike Riley exclaims “60 years young, Fred Whitaker, you are an Ironman!” In 2013 I decided to try the very first IM events located in Los Cabos, Mexico, and Lake Tahoe. I made it half way through the bike course in Cabo and was stopped at mile 88 in Lake Tahoe because I didn’t make the cutoff time. There was a highlight for me in 2013 as I was able to register for the NYC Marathon with a donation to CAF. Those of us racing for CAF met for lunch at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square and enjoyed listening to Sarah Reinertsen speak. Racing through the five boroughs of New York was incredible in addition to finishing the race in Central Park. 2014 was very exciting as my early race in March was the 30th Ironman New Zealand. One week before the race I sprained my ankle and it turned black and blue. I was very disappointed but relied on my daughter to tape it before my flight. She will graduate next year with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Point Loma Nazarene University. Upon my arrival in Taupo, New Zealand, I asked Ken Glah who would be able help me with my injured ankle. He recommended an Active Release Techniques (ART) specialist so the possibility of racing the Ironman was looking better each day. I came out of the water with my best swim time and was just hoping that the ankle would hold up as I ran up the green carpet which was a long distance to T1. I was going to be O.K. I saw my CF buddie David as he cheered me on coming out on my bike. It was very windy that day but had my best bike time. I told the volunteer’s at the completion of the bike course that I needed to leave my shoes on the bike because I might re-sprain my ankle if I popped out. As normal the run started off awkward but I finished the Ironman with 28 minutes to spare. The next day I traveled south to Queenstown. There I enjoyed a really cool bungee jump from the location of the original bungee and also did some sky diving, water rafting and experience the world famous Shotover Jet boat ride. Mostly likely I had been listening to took much of Eddie Van Halen’s “Jump”. The next week I did another bungee jump off the Auckland Bridge. Finally in July 2014 I traveled to my next race, which was Ironman Austria located in Klagenfurt. Absolutely incredible scenery from the swim, through the bike course and the run. I was struggling on the second loop of the bike as the hills got to continued on page 22

me and I was worried I would not make the cutoff. I was hammering as fast as I could go, which did exhausted me. I also found myself struggling on the run. With four miles, to go I was feeling the rain, see lightening and hearing thunder. I just couldn’t run so I tried to walk fast. With one mile to go, I had seven Austrians walking with me and encouraging me to keep going no matter what. I came around the corner and the cheer leaders and fans were still there even though the finish line clock was off and no cameramen were in the area. They still called me an Ironman and presented me the finisher medal even though it was three minutes after midnight. I was so tired that I lay down on the wet concrete. Minutes later two Ironman staff personnel said somebody wanted to see me. I put my arms up so they could pick me up and I sat down on a wooden bench. Next to me was Ivan Rana the winner of the 2014 Ironman Austria. He just wanted to see how I was doing. We
talked for ten minutes and then a cameraman came around and took several pictures of us. I never was able to find a copy of those pictures but would like to get them someday. The next day I traveled with Ken Glah to Frankfurt, Germany, because part of my vacation plan was to be a spectator at the IM European Championship. Wow! That was also exciting. I had a very educational experience as I traveled to Munich and also had a great boat trip down the Rhine River. I was able to take video of numerous castles and also participated in a wine tasting tour. I was introduced to ice wine which is now my favorite but more expensive than most. My 2015 IM races will start with Ironman Texas, which is this year’s North American Championship. Ben Hoffman (second place finisher at the 2014 Ironman World Championship) will be there racing. I don’t expect to keep up with him but do hope to see him at the finish line, which as always is my goal. I will be 63 years old the day before the race. In November I will go to Panama City Beach for Ironman Florida. As you can tell I love to travel and race. I will continue this pace as my goal is to get into the Legacy Lottery and have the opportunity to race in Kona at the World Championship. I will get in much better shape and truly believe my best years are in front of me as a triathlete. Thanks to the Triathlon Club of San Diego my life has been increasingly exciting and I have met more people than I could have ever imagined. It’s a great family and we stay friends even though we bump each other a lot during the swim portions of triathlons.
