This is a proposal for a house, questioning the actual meaning of usual elements of housings. This building has its facade only in front of the building, as if it is saying that the house is rather fictional thing: a similar attitude with 1920's "Kanaban Kenchiku" (means "Signbord Architecture")(Fig.1-1). The composition is also responding to site condition; the front area is a new-housing area which comprises of pre-fabricated housings, and the back area is a “Condensed Area of Old Wooden Housing". piece of a house creates a wired vacant space, contineuing to a semi-public space with a piano facing to the intersection of narrow paths which is an emergency route for the old housing area Usual elements of housing are treated in contradicting way in this house. The endtrance door lose its usual meaning: it just divide outside and outside. The basement of the house, the main story and the roof structure connect each other by small void. A circle table is divided by glasses into two pieces; one is inside dinner, another is outside feeding space for birds. The stairs go up around a chimney and some of them stretch to be a toilet space or balcony for laundry...

This is a proposal of a housing complex in the central area of Tokyo where mid-tall buidings stand shoulder to shouder creating a lot of gaps. I try to find a new meaning in "in-between" spaces of buildings, (Fig 2-1).

In-between

Two volumes of housings are covered by continuoues envelopes (Fig. 2-2), which only open to inbetween space. This vertical void has a slope sawing two volumes and works as a semi-public library. Space In between the ground and the envelope works as a bookshop, and the space in between the sky and the envelope works as a theater. These three in-between space is connecting together to create a trajectory of public spaces from a public bath and a public park.

This is a proposal for a elementary school, responding to the following site conditions.

Historical Research of the Area In 17Centrury (Edo Period), when the surroundings were destroyed by a large fire, only the mansion of the Yamazaki family escaped the stone firing, but it was told that this pond is big but it is because it blew water and extinguished the fire.

I drew a masterplan around Kiyosumi Garden, to reconstruct the relationship between the Garden and the city, Five sites are designed by a gradual process which is represented by three models for each site. In Tokyo University of the Arts, students stayed “Antique Art Research Facilities” (Nara, Japan) for two weeks to visit traditional architectures in the western part of Japan. As a spontaneous trip, I personally visited Kyoto and Nara several times a year to see Japanese traditional architecture which has become a great source of my inspiration. I also visited Athena, Roma, Firenze, Milan to learn western architectural history.

made from acrylic and copper tube. Each unit was fabricated by a laser cutter.

This is a real construction studio done by 15 students. This shell is geometlicaly conprised by three differennt HPs. I was responsible for modeling by grashopper. We discussed the form based on my parametrical model. We also checked the strength of a conrete to make it as thin as possible. Consequently, one continuous concrete creates three confortable spaces.

Mekong Riverside Project

Riverside Restaurant is located in District 2, Ho Chi Mihn City. I joined this project from the concept phase. Roofs coming from two sides of the site creating a valley. This shape reflects old terrain and exiting palm trees at the center. After the "Mekong River Research", we refered to the fish pond and made a corridor frame at the two side.

Nishizawa Architects collaborates with Kawai Studio in Shiga Univ. in “Mekong River Research”. We have researched water housing and will design a housing complex. In this field research, I encountered the construction site of a huge fish pen below their house and realized water can be a metaphor of “empty space”.

Overview and Next Two Years

TWO INTERESTS A. Secondary Space I have always been fascinated by the secondary spaces in and around buildings. My design research “Urban Rooms”(Portfolio P.08), challenged the hierarchy between the Servant and the Served space. “Touch the Infrastructure” (P.17) explored the textures of the secondary spaces. B. Boundary My previous academic work centered around boundaries between land and water, ex. “Around Watergarden"(P.12). My internship projects “Riverside Restaurant” (P.19)and “Mekong River Research”(P.19) were of waterfront development. I would like to expand these studies around the waterfront to other boundaries. TWO APPROACHES A. Narrative Approach I attach high importance to the narrative in designing architecture. In “Urban Room” (P. 08), I constructing a story from an actual cit. In “Ostranenie” (P. 03) I refer to literature technique to modify common elements of a house. B. Physical Prototyping Digital fabrication skills have allowed me to make organized process models, which I used in “Around Watergarden”(P.12), and to deal with more complex material. “Tapered Gallery,”(P. 14)taught me the complexxity of real construction.

GRADUATION PROJECT “Around Watergarden”(P.12) is a masterplan around Kiyosumi Garden, Tokyo. I combined the pumping station and a forgotten water garden to revive the water level of the pond. The new water stream from the pump to the pond works new boundary of the garden, reconstructing the relationship between the garden and the city. To have a range in the relationships, I chose five sites and designed them by a gradual process which is represented by three models for each site.
