Emerald Auction March 14, 2015 Dear St. Robert School community and friends, So, are you ready for one BIG night?! We are excited to bring a fun evening your way and are grateful to have been entrusted to help organize this important event. As the single largest fundraiser for St. Robert School, the auction raises money that’s essential to the school’s daily operation. Last year, the auction raised a record $150,000+. We’re excited to attempt matching that! Of course, we actually did very “little” compared to the BIG work done by the hundreds of parents, teachers, students, staff, family, alumni, parishioners and friends of St. Robert who volunteer, donate, plan and work towards making this annual event such a highlight of the school year. We are grateful for your hard work. We know you’ll be reviewing this book diligently to see what treasures will be there for bidding. A few event highlights to remember… • The St. Robert’s Jazz Band will again be welcoming guests to the event. Be sure to give them your applause when you arrive. • The Live Auction has a variety of new items this year. And once again, be sure to buy a Live Auction Raffle Ticket the night of the event. You just might be able to choose the Live Auction item of your dreams. • The iChance raffle is sure to tantalize the technology fiends in all of us! Auction Rules New this year, silent auction bidding will be opened one day before the event at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 13. To get the Greater Giving Mobile Bidding interface on your phone, you will receive a text to the phone number you registered on Greater Giving when you paid for your Emerald Auction tickets online. All items will be available to bid on except for Live Auction items and sign up parties. Bidders will be able to take advantage of “Buy it Now” prices when bidding opens on Friday. Greater Giving Mobile Bidding will allow you to track your bids, place maximum bids, view items that have not been bid on and alert you when you have been outbid on an item. Please be sure to fully charge your personal device before arriving at the auction. We cannot guarantee there will be charging stations available if needed. There will be a limited number of personal bidding devices to borrow, available at check-in, as well as a central bidding station with someone able to place bids on your behalf in limited circumstances. There will be "Bid Buddies" roaming the event to help you place bids. There also will be video screens in both ballrooms that will show bidding statuses. After bidding closes on Saturday, March 14, checkout will begin at 10:00pm in the Festa Ballroom. All purchased items must be paid for and removed from the premises by the end of the evening unless other arrangements are made with the Auction committee. All sales are final. In order to bid on items at the Emerald Auction, auction goers will be required to give a credit card (MasterCard or Visa) or a signed check made out to St. Robert Home & School Association. If upon checkout one should choose to pay in cash, the check will be shredded and any credit card provided will not be charged. Successful bidders shall pay in full the evening of the Emerald Auction. Items may be removed only after obtaining a paid receipt from Checkout. Items may be removed if you have either made arrangements to pre-pay or you have checked out and received your final statement. St. Robert School, the Home & School Association and its Emerald Auction Committee warrant neither the quality nor the value of items presented. All items are sold “as is.” Dollar values are estimates often determined by the donor, and are not guaranteed by the Emerald Auction Committee for tax purposes or market value. All auctioned items expire on March 14, 2016, unless otherwise stated.

SILENT AUCTION 1. The Silent Auction will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 13 via Greater Giving Mobile Bidding from your mobile bidding device. To get the bidding interface, will receive a text to the phone number you registered on Greater Giving when you paid for your Emerald Auction Tickets online. 2. All items will be sold to the highest bidder who meets or surpasses any minimum bid noted on Greater Giving Mobile Bidding and properly meets or exceeds the stated minimum raise level. 3. All Silent Auction items are arranged by categories for personal inspection. Each item has a description of its value. Make your bid by utilizing Greater Giving Mobile Bidding and follow the prompt steps to enter your bid. Confirm that your bid has been accepted. 4. Each increase must equal or exceed the minimum raise stated on the bidding device. 5. The closing bid highlighted by Greater Giving Mobile Bidding at the end of the Silent Auction will constitute a winning bid. In case of a dispute at the time of closing, bidders will be given an opportunity to submit a final written bid to the Auction Committee, with the highest bidder being declared the winner. 6. All bidders on items with alcoholic beverages must be 21 years old to be eligible.

VOICE AUCTION 1. The Voice Auction will be held in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom at the Italian Conference Center during dinner. 2. Each successful bidder will sign an acknowledgement form indicating the winning bid amount to confirm sale. 3. The Auction Committee reserves the right to repeat the sale of any disputed item.

How to use Mobile Bidding Get started! On Friday,March 13 at 8 a.m., you will receive a text message to the phone you registered on Greater Giving, with a link. Tap the link—it will open your browser and take you directly to the bidder interface. Tap the “Yes” button to verify your name.

How do I find items? From the home screen, you can enter a package number or search phrase in the box and jump right to that package. You can also scroll through a list of packages by category - just choose “Browse by Category.”

How do I bid? You can bid from anywhere, anytime! Find the item you are interested in, select your bid from the drop down menu and click “Place Bid.” You can bid the next increment by clicking on the “Quick Bid” button and you can “Watch” packages as well. To find out what packages have no bids, tap the “No Bids Pkgs” button.

Where are the items I bid on? Tap the "My Bids" button to see what you have bid on.

How do I make a donation? Press the “Donate” button on your home screen and choose a pre-set amount or enter the amount you wish to donate, then select Submit.

Can mobile bidding automatically bid for me? Yes, just set a Max Bid. Upon doing so, Mobile Bidding will automatically bid on your behalf, by increment, whenever you are outbid, up to your Max Bid amount.

St. Robert School — 1915 to present By Margaret Mathews Sankovitz ‘47

t. Robert School is 100 years old! The 100th anniversary of the first day of school is this coming September 15, 2015!

When the parish was founded and incorporated in 1912, the parishioners hope was to have a school. The first permanent building was built and opened as a church in the fall of 1913 with the intention of opening a school on the second floor of the building.

School (primarily Messmer - then a three year high school.) The last ninth grade class graduated in the spring of 1955 in anticipation of the four year Dominican High School opening in Whitefish Bay. By the middle 1950’s the school population had grown so that every classroom was crowded, with 45-50 students per class and some space in the basement being used for classrooms. The parish undertook an ambitious fund-raising effort in the fall of 1957 and by the fall of 1958 the north addition to the school was ready for use. It provided for classrooms on the second floor and a gymnasium and stage on the ground level. The former gym was transformed into a multipurpose room and lunch room, a kitchen was built, and the former parish hall that also had a kitchen and small stage was reconfigured into smaller rooms for music, art, nurse’s office, etc.

In 1915, Fr. Farrel Patrick Reilly, founding pastor, invited the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa to staff the school and on September 15, 1915, Sr. Aloysius Reilly (no relation to Fr. Reilly) opened the doors to 43 children who were students in grades one through four. Sr. Aloysius was principal and grade teacher. She was assisted by Sr. Lucillus Howard. Each year a grade was added and in 1920 St. Robert School gradu- Father Farrel Patrick Reilly with school children in front of St. Robert Church/School, on Atwater Road (Capitol Drive) c. 1916. ated its first eighth grade class. The school population grew rapidly and soon more space was needed for the burgeoning school enrollment. In 1927 an addition was built that added two floors of classrooms and provided for a gymnasium in the basement (now Reilly Hall) and a small library at the north end of the second floor (now the reading nook in the Media Center). By 1928 each of the eight grades had two classes. In the ensuing years, space in the convent building was used for classrooms and in 1929 a small wooden building - The Annex - was erected on what is now the playground/parking lot north of the parish offices and rectory to accommodate some of the intermediate grades classes. That building was razed in the summer of 1939 after the present church was built and the former church space on the first floor of the school was available for classrooms. In 1939 a ninth grade was begun. Students from the surrounding area came to St. Robert for ninth grade before continuing to High

In 1983, junior and senior kindergarten classes were established with one teacher teaching both levels in a first floor area formed by combining two classrooms.

Today, St. Robert School has the same physical footprint as it did in 1958 but the interior, although appearing the same, has been transformed into a 21st century school. There are world languages in the curriculum; there is an amazing media center; there are white boards (although the old blackboards and erasers are still available). Each grade level studies science; involvement in music education and art is required for each grade level. One of the most obvious changes in the school is the absence of the white-habited Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. The Sisters were the only religious order that taught in St. Robert School. The last Dominican at St. Robert was Sr. Dorothy Victor, O.P., who retired in 2002. During those years - 1915-2002 - over 250 sisters were assigned to St. Robert School. Eleven sisters served as principal, the last being Sr. Helen Martin (1976-87). Since 1987, five lay persons have held the office of principal, presently occupied by Lauren Beckmann. Assisting the principals,

both religious and lay, have been hundreds of lay teachers, female and male, who have not only maintained the integrity of St. Robert School but have enhanced and enriched its fine reputation in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Athletics have always been an important part of the educational experience at St. Robert School. Until 1978, organized, league football was part of the extracurricular program. Many great teams were fielded over the years - many of them champions. In 1978, because of declining enrollment and increasing costs, football was dropped. Basketball has always been big at St. Robert. Initially both basketball and football were boys only sports - and only in the upper grades. For many years now, basketball has been offered to both boys and girls beginning in the middle grades. In 1972 girls interscholastic sports came to St. Robert in the form of volleyball for girls

in the middle school grades. Since that time volleyball is offered to both boys and girls. Track was reinstituted a few years ago for boys and girls. Early on in the history of the school, track was part of the athletic program, as was boxing. St. Robert Parish celebrated its Centennial during 2012. In 2015 St. Robert School will celebrate its Centennial! Parishioners can take pride in the long history of the superlative Catholic education that has been fostered by the Parish. St. Robert School is an asset to the Shorewood and Milwaukee communities and has produced thousands of alumni who have reflected brightly on St. Robert School and parish as they participate as productive, moral and ethical citizens.

• 1987 - First lay principal - Connie Roybal. • 1990 - Sinsinawa Dominicans leave St. Robert Convent.

• 1928 - Two classrooms for each grade. • November 9, 1928 - School library was established.

• 2002 - Last Sinsinawa Dominican teacher, St. Dorothy Victor, O.P., retires.

• June 24, 1928 - First summer school session began.

• 2010 - New Media Center.

• May 29, 1929 - First May procession held.

• 2010 - New Elevator provides accessibility to all floors of school.

• 1929 - Annex building erected for intermediate grades. • September 19, 1930 - Children given a free day to attend the installation of His Excellency, the Most Rev. Archbishop Samuel A. Stritch.

St. Robert Scholarship Fund All members of the St Robert community understand the blessings of a St. Robert education. Our children are building a foundation based on academics, spiritual growth and human concern that will enrich them and their communities throughout their entire lives. As parents, we give our time, we give our leadership, and we give our vision to the school. We give so that our children can grow. One of St. Robertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary goals has been to share the boundless gifts of a St. Robert education broadly. It is commonly understood that private education is expensive, and requires the financial support of its students and patrons. This economic reality sometimes conflicts with a family's ability to afford a St. Robert education. That is why for many years St. Robert has quietly provided financial assistance to families that understand the value of our school, but need some financial assistance. Over the past several years St. Robert has been providing over $30,000 per year in scholarships to responsible families. These scholarships have provided opportunities to hundreds of children that otherwise would not have been able to attend the school. As our costs to educate continue to increase, we have also increased our commitment to funding scholarships to over $40,000 per year. This increase in our scholarship commitment also means higher reliance on the generosity of our community. We need your help in providing a St. Robert education to families that understand how special our school is, but need a little financial assistance. Tonight, share the gift of St. Robert with others. Ride to School in a NSFD Fire Truck

The stories, and photos, will last for years when your child catches a ride to school in a fire truck. The lucky junior firefighter will get to put on a junior firefighter coat and helmet, then step up into the seat of a shiny red fire truck and enjoy a first class ride to school. The truck will arrive at your house early for some great photo ops, and then off to school they’ll go! The junior fire fighter will arrive at St. Robert’s front door with flashing red lights and then they’ll be escorted to their classroom by members of the North Shore Fire Department. Scavenger Race and College Party - Wrapped into One

St. Robert School Emerald Auction 2015

The 2015 Emerald Auction Student Art Project It is an annual tradition at St. Robert’s Emerald Auction to feature a school-wide Art Project, and this year’s auction project focused primarily on the students. When Donna Bailey and I spoke at the beginning of the year, we both felt that what mattered most was that each student would be authentically represented. Also taken into consideration were materials available within our budget, time constraints while scheduling around classes, and an emphasis on inter-curricular involvement in a way that allowed the full participation of students, even at the youngest elementary-school level. We worked within these constraints and let the students design their own interpretations based on a chosen medium and theme. Instead of the completed canvases being primarily teacher-driven or relying on heavy parent involvement, students at each grade level worked on a skill they had previously practiced, and the large finished pieces are comprised of separate works by each student in each grade. The kids enjoyed the chance to collaborate through their creativity and individual contributions, and they had fun knowing these fleeting activities would culminate in something enduring for their school auction. This year the Student Art Project was geared toward enhancing the curriculum and complementing the Art For Youth program while ensuring that each child would be authentically represented. There are 10 finished pieces in all, with a separate 24” x 36” composition created by each grade. These large compositions are in turn comprised of small individual vignettes, which each reflect a student’s interpretation of a chosen theme in a specific medium. The themes of this year’s project include: mono prints, black-and-white zentangles, block prints on newspaper, and mixed-media collage.
