WELCOME LETTER
ALOHA FROM HIFF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND HIFF PRESIDENT The Hawaii International Film Festival presented by Halekulani is proudly celebrating its 35th Anniversary as the leading film festival supporting film and filmmakers from Asia, the Pacific, and North America. As the vanguard forum of international cinematic achievement in the Asia-Pacific region, HIFF endeavors to recognize new and emerging talent, promote career development and original collaborations through innovative education programs, and facilitate dynamic cultural exchange through the cinema arts. HIFF 2015 proudly presents 181 films, with 17 U.S., 14 International, and 32 World Premieres from 41 countries. Highlights include Opening Night Film THE THRONE by Lee Joon-ick, Centerpiece Film and Cannes winner CAROL directed by Todd Haynes, Closing Night Film and U.S. Premier A TALE OF THREE CITIES, directed by Hong Kong based director Mabel Cheung, the U.S. Premiere of AMERICAN EPIC, directed by Bernard MacMahon and executive produced by Robert Redford, T Bone Burnett, and Jack White, and the World Premiere of the locally created, China/ Hawaii co-production film PALI ROAD, directed by Jonathan Lim and starring Michelle Chen and Jackson Rathbone (TWILIGHT). Halekulani Corporation, HIFF’s key presenting sponsor, will once again present the Festival’s coveted Halekulani Golden Orchid Awards for Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and for the first, time, Best Narrative Short Film. This year’s international Jury includes Jérôme Paillard, Executive Director Marché du film Festival de Cannes, Academy award winning directors Freida Lee Mock and James Moll, award winning producer Nina Yang Bongiovi, EbertFest Director Nate Kohn, and Berlin International Film Festival film programmer John Badalu. During the 35th Anniversary festival, HIFF will be honoring many stars from Asia, the Pacific, and North America, including Korean superstar Ha Jung-woo, HIFF 2015 Renaissance Award honoree, and two of Japan’s greatest stars, Ryoko Hirosue, HIFF 2015 Career Achievement Award winner, and Tadanobu Asano, HIFF 2015 Maverick Award recipient who simply defines “Japan cool”. Now in its 9th year, the New American Filmmakers Program, presented by the Vilcek Foundation, will once again highlight the contributions that so many immigrants have made to American cinema over the years. Along with films from five talented, cutting-edge, foreign-born artists the HIFF is celebrating the life and legacy of one of the greatest directors of all time and the maestro of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The Hitchcock Spotlight will encompass a 70th anniversary presentation of SPELLBOUND starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman, as well as a conversation with the late director’s granddaughters, Tere Carrubba and Mary Stone, who will share their insights about the grandfather behind the legacy. In addition, HIFF will present the Hawaii premiere of Kent Jones’ documentary HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The 4th Annual Creative Lab at HIFF will continue to provide a unique environment for international creative collaboration, further support the professional development of creative entrepreneurs, and increases the growth of commercially viable content for acquisition and distribution. Passionately dedicated to the success of filmmakers, Creative Lab at HIFF announces three new annual programs: the Ebert Young Writers Program for the Arts in honor of Roger Ebert’s legacy support of HIFF, the HIFF Oscar Doc Lab lead by Oscar winning filmmakers Freida Mock and James Moll, and the 1st Annual Asia Pacific Entertainment Finance Forum (APEFF) presented by Winston Baker, the leading producer of film finance forums around the world. As the costs to maintain such a legacy film festival continue to rise, we extend a very special thank you to HIFF Key Presenting Sponsor Halekulani and all our sponsors for their vital support, to all of the loyal “HIFFies” whose continued support both financially and in human resource keep us alive and thriving, and to the HIFF Staff and Board of Directors, whose passionate dedication allow us to continue providing a unique experience for our island community whilst also showcasing our great talent here in Hawai’i. On behalf of the HIFF Board of Directors and the HIFF team, we extend our warmest mahalo nui loa! See you at the movies!

AWARDS & JURY
AWARDS & JURY HALEKULANI GOLDEN ORCHID AWARD Presented by Halekulani The Golden Orchid is bestowed upon the narrative and documentary films that best express artistic and technical excellence and promote cross-cultural understanding. And like the rare endemic orchids of our native Hawaii, these awards recognize singular achievements amid collective beauty. Each nominated film furthers the Hawaii International Film Festival mandate to entertain, enlighten and empower. Our international jury will select the films that articulate this manifesto consistent with the cross-pollination of words, ideas and images that comprise the kinetic and visceral power of film. For the first time, these two awards will also include cash prizes of $5000 each.

2015 FALL FESTIVAL
AWARDS SPOTLIGHT RYOKO HIROSUE CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Ryoko Hirosue is one of the most recognized faces in Japan. She is an award winning actress, who is best known in the West for her role in the Luc Besson produced WASABI co-starring Jean Reno and DEPARTURES, the winner of the Oscar® for Foreign Language Film (also the HIFF 2008 Audience Award). Hirosue made her television debut in 1995 at the age of 15 in Fuji TV’s HEART NI S. She was also named “Best Newcomer” at the 10th Television Drama Academy Awards the same year when she starred in Fuji TV’s comedy series, SHOTA NO SUSHI. But her breakthrough came with her performance in the wildly popular TV drama BEACH BOYS in 1997, for which she was awarded “Best Supporting Actress” at the 14th Television Drama Academy Awards. Her film career took off with her international debut in WASABI and she subsequently appeared in a number of Japanese films that would go on to film festival acclaim, including the Oscar® winning DEPARTURES, the time travel comedy BUBBLE FICTION: BOOM OR BUST and VILLON’S WIFE. In addition, she co-starred in Kenji Uchida’s KEY OF LIFE, which won the Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Narrative Feature at HIFF 2012. All of these recent films have screened as part of HIFF, making Ms. Hirosue’s work one of the most prolific in the Festival’s film programming. She plays the lead in her latest film HANA’S MISO SOUP, turning in her best performance yet. HANA’S MISO SOUP will debut in Japanese cinemas this holiday season.
TADANOBU ASANO MAVERICK AWARD If we were to play word association with the term “Japanese cool” in the last twenty years, Tadanobu Asano would be it. One of the most daring, punk rock and iconic Japanese character actors, Asano burst onto the scene with his work in SHARKSKIN MAN AND PEACH HIP GIRL (1998) by director (and HIFF favorite) Katsuhito Ishii. He would soon pursue a career track that would include iconic character benchmarks ranging from electric guitar warrior Dragon Eye Morrison in Sogo Ishii’s ELECTRIC DRAGON 80,000V (2001) to the bleached haired psychopath with the Joker scarred smile in Takashi Miike’s ICHI THE KILLER (2001). He has worked with internationally renowned directors from Japan and abroad, including Kiyoshi Kurosawa for BRIGHT FUTURE (2002), Takeshi Kitano’s ZATOICHI (2003), Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s CAFE LUMIERE (2003) and Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang for both LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE (2002) and INVISIBLE WAVES (2006). But it was his relationship with director Katsuhito Ishii that brought him to festival audience attention with HIFF 2004 Golden Maile winner THE TASTE OF TEA and the surreal FUNKY FOREST (2005). Asano crossed over to the West in Sergei Bodrov’s MONGOL: THE RISE OF GENGHIS KHAN (2007) and into the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” as the god Hogun in THOR (2011) and THOR: THE DARK WORLD (2013). He also played Captain Yugi Takata in Peter Berg’s BATTLESHIP (2012), where he spent several months in Hawaii in production. He also recently completed a co-starring role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming SILENCE, starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. Asano once again collaborates with director Kiyoshi Kurosawa in the ghostly romance JOURNEY TO THE SHORE, which held its’ world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and is screening as part of HIFF’s 2015 program.

AWARDS SPOTLIGHT
HA JUNG-WOO RENAISSANCE AWARD Ha Jung-woo is a South Korean actor and film director. Ha studied theater at Chung-Ang University, and after several years of minor and supporting parts, he was cast in his first starring role in the low-budget indie THE UNFORGIVEN (2005), directed by his friend Yoon Jong-bin. This was followed by Kim Ki-duk’s TIME (2006), and Gina Kim’s cross-cultural romance NEVER FOREVER (2007) with Vera Farmiga. But his breakthrough role to stardom was in Na Hong-jin’s serial killer film THE CHASER (2008). Known to attract both critical acclaim and commercial success, Ha quickly became the most in-demand leading actor of his generation in Korean cinema, showcasing his versatility in the road movie MY DEAR ENEMY (2008), the sports film TAKE OFF (2009), crime drama and Na Hong-jin follow-up THE YELLOW SEA (2010), crime saga NAMELESS GANGSTER: RULES OF THE TIME (2012), romantic comedy LOVE FICTION (2012), spy thriller THE BERLIN FILE (2013), newsroom thriller THE TERROR LIVE (2013) and as a Korean Robin Hood in KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT (2014). Most of these titles have played in HIFF over the years. He made his directorial debut with the comedy FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT (2013), followed by the family drama CHRONICLE OF A BLOOD MERCHANT (2015). His latest starring role, aptly named “Hawaii Pistol”, in director Choi Dong-hoon’s WWII set spy thriller and smash hit film, ASSASSINATION, is playing in this year’s Festival.
ARUNA VASUDEV VISION IN FILM AWARD Aruna Vasudev is the Founding President of NETPAC and has been involved in promoting Asian cinema as a filmmaker, author, film festival director, journal publisher, and jury member for four decades. She is wellknown as the Founding Editor of Cinemaya, the Asian film Journal that she started in 1988 and continued publishing until selling it in 2004 to Osian’s. She has a PhD from the University of Paris, and has written several books on Indian, Japanese and Asian cinema. She has been president or member of international juries for film festivals including Locarno, Cannes (Camera d’Or), Asia Pacific festival in Taipei, Japanese Biennale at Orleans, and for Vesoul (France), Thessaloniki (Greece), Fribourg (Switzerland), Shanghai, Tehran, Hawaii, Singapore, Tallinn (Estonia), Cinemanila and Cinemalaya (Philippines), Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), Jeonju and Chungmuro (South Korea), Las Palmas, Granada and Barcelona (Spain), Istanbul, Antalya and Malatya (Turkey), Sale (Morocco), Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, Beirut, and many others. She was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Government; the Korea Prize from the Pusan International Film Festival, South Korea; the Star of Italian Solidarity by the Italian Government; the Lifetime Achievement award from Cinemanila film festival, Manila; the Satyajit Ray Memorial Award; the Kalpana Chawla Award for Excellence for Women; and the Lifetime Achievement award by Icongo (International Confederation of NGOs) in India.

FILM PROGRAM
FILM PROGRAM THE THRONE HAWAII PREMIERE
OPENING NIGHT FILM
SOUTH KOREA 2015 | KOREAN W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 125M | DIRECTOR: Lee Joon-Ik 12-NOV 8:00 PM DOL The story at the center of THE THRONE, a struggle between the long-ruling King Yeongjo (an amazing Song Kang-ho) and his son, Sado (Yoo Ah-in, also in VETERAN) and the real life incident of the king’s decision to lock up his son in a wooden barrel — in which the royal heir died after eight days. Like director Lee Joon-ik’s THE KING AND THE CLOWN, both films share the backdrop of palace intrigue, turncoat characters, and a monarchy-in-meltdown story that has been adapted in countless K-dramas. But THE THRONE is more than black and white, and transcends beyond its own setting. No wonder it has been chosen as South Korea’s official entry to the Academy Awards Foreign Language film category. $22 GENERAL PUBLIC | $17 HIFF MEMBERS
CAROL HAWAII PREMIERE
CENTERPIECE FILM
UNITED KINGDOM, UNITED STATES 2014 | ENGLISH | 118M | DIRECTOR: Todd Haynes 18-NOV 8:00 PM DOL Set in 1950s New York, two women from very different backgrounds (Rooney Mara as a young shop clerk and Cate Blanchett as a sophisticated, but unhappy housewife) find themselves in the throes of love in CAROL. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, director Todd Haynes returns to the Douglas Sirk ‘50s era of FAR FROM HEAVEN, and delivers another well-mannered romance, expunging the pulpy prose of the original text. With amazing production design and brilliant performances (Mara won Best Actress for this role in Cannes), CAROL will definitely be up for some major nominations come awards season. $22 GENERAL PUBLIC | $17 HIFF MEMBERS
A TALE OF THREE CITIES UNITED STATES PREMIERE
CLOSING NIGHT FILM
CHINA 2014 | MANDARIN W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 130M | DIRECTOR: Mabel Cheung 22-NOV 7:30 PM DOL Based on a true story, this epic and true love story is based on Jackie Chan’s real life parents. Revolving around the couple’s relationship in war-torn China of the 1930s and 1940s, A TALE OF THREE CITIES offers an epic period drama about individuals overwhelmed by the times, their trajectories shaped by rapidly changing circumstances beyond their control. Lau Ching-wan and Tang Wei play ill-fated lovebirds who meet during the backdrop of the final days leading into WWII. This is the latest film from filmmaking married couple Mabel Cheung and Alex Law, who also wrote and directed one of the Festival’s most popular films ever, THE SOONG SISTERS. $22 GENERAL PUBLIC | $17 HIFF MEMBERS

Ichiko is a thirtysomething slacker, who still lives at home. Things change when her sister returns home with child in tow. Ichiko and her sister’s relationship sours, causing Ichiko to finally move out and take a job in a 100 yen shop, located near a boxing gym. She is smitten with a middle-aged boxer, who stirs a fire in Ichiko to take up boxing—A beautiful, heart-wrenching black comedy that slowly unravels and turns into an unexpected coming-of-age sports drama.
There is just one week until Kate Mercer’s forty-fifth wedding anniversary, and planning for the party is going well, until a letter arrives for her husband. The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. Jealousy and what ifs plague the couple. By the time the party is upon them, there may not be a marriage left to celebrate.

AMERICAN EPIC is the extraordinary story of 1920s record companies that toured America with a recording machine, to capture the emerging and diverse music known as American roots. The filmmakers retrace this journey today, to rediscover the families whose music was recorded long ago; music that would lead to the development of Hopi, Hawaiian slack key, Tejano, Cajun and Delta Blues. These seminal musicians are revealed through previously unseen film footage, unpublished photographs, and exclusive interviews. The first screening will be preceded by a special performance by TAJ MAHAL.

Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated screenwriter of BEING JOHN MALKOVICH and ADAPTATION and director of SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK and Duke Johnson venture into the world of stop-motion animation with this fable about a motivational speaker seeking to transcend his monotonous existence. This story of two unlikely lovers is very much a romance — but one that’s been forged in one of cinema’s most distinctive minds. ANOMALISA world premiered in Venice, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.
Set at the end of China’s Tang Dynasty and inspired by a well-known legend, the film centers on a skilled assassin (an excellent Shu Qi) dispatched to kill an important political figure who is also her cousin and former lover. However in this ethereal drama from legendary director Hou Hsiao Hsien, plot rides shotgun to the film’s exacting visual style; the story conveyed via long takes, as if one is watching a series of paintings coming to life.

Turkey in the 1960s and 70s was one of the world’s biggest film producers even though its industry was vastly unknown internationally. In order to keep up with demand, screenwriters and directors were copying scripts and remaking movies from across the globe. Name any Western hit film, there is a Turkish version to it, from THE WIZARD OF OZ to STAR TREK. What they lacked in equipment and budget they compensated for with sheer zeal and excessive use of manpower.

Inspired by the 1999 song “Soredake” performed by the Japanese rock band Bloodthirsty Butchers, THAT’S IT marks the return to his punk roots for the O.G. Japanese cyberpunk director Gakuryu Ishii, formerly known as Sogo Ishii. Starring Shota Sometani, Erina Mizuno and Go Ayano, the film focuses on a young hoodlum who tries to escape his miserable life by stealing gold but accidentally ends up acquiring valuable information, thus infuriating a powerful underworld organization, and resulting in an action extravaganza!
James and Lexi, a conflicted young couple, make the jump and move from Manhattan to Puna, Hawaii Island as a last ditch effort to save their relationship. Way out of their element, they meet a polyamorous trio or “throuple,” and a mysterious recluse. The problems that James and Lexi thought they left on the mainland continue to arise on the island, and their interactions with the throuple spins the couple into a tale of love, murder and madness.
Diagnosed with ALS and given 2-5 years to live, New York DJ, internet personality, and filmmaker, ‘TransFatty’, brings his camera along for the ride in this unconventional examination of life, death, and everything in between. He films every step of his debilitating journey from first diagnosis through his current paralysis. Forcefully lacking self-pity, he captures the emotion, humor, and absurdity of real life as he makes art, gets political, falls in love, fathers a son, and fights extreme depression and paranoia.

TYRUS is a feature-length documentary film that tells the unlikely story of 104-year-old Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong, and how he overcame poverty and racism to become a celebrated modernist painter, Hollywood sketch artist, and ‘Disney Legend’ for his groundbreaking work on the classic animated film, BAMBI. From his 1932 group show with Picasso and Matisse to his current solo show in NYC in 2015, Tyrus Wong continues to live the life of an artist.
A young, inexperienced public attorney, Jin-won, is assigned to defend Jae-ho, father of a teen who’s been killed by a cop. Jae-ho is charged of murdering the policeman in revenge. With the help of a passionate journalist and a divorce lawyer, Jin-won vows to reveal the truth and accuses the court of attempting a cover-up. Faced with an uphill battle, losing hope and on the verge of giving up, the defense counsel never abandons its search for truth and fairness.

The gripping, emotionally charged story of Tyke the circus elephant that went on a rampage in Honolulu in 1994, killed her trainer in front of thousands, and died in a hail of gunfire. It traumatized a city and ignited a global battle over the use of animals in entertainment. Looking at what made Tyke snap, the film explores the causes and outcome. Combining trauma, outrage, insight and compassion, this is a powerful story about our deep connection to other species.

A tough cop targets the tyrannical heir to a mega-corporation in this hard-hitting thriller from South Korean cult auteur Ryoo Seung-wan (CITY OF VIOLENCE, THE UNJUST). From its rooftop chase sequence to an explosive action scene at the Port of Busan, every element of the film has been honed for maximum kinetic thrills. With sinuous camera moves and goofy gags, VETERAN is a work of high entertainment.
A devastating typhoon is sweeping over the Philippines, slowly approaching Manila. As if they sensed the final judgment looming, some of the city’s inhabitants behave in ways that are hard to explain. The intriguing mosaic of stories gradually leads us to a police station where the night shift is forced to wait out the forces of nature, while a new prisoner sitting in one of the cells appears to be connected to the mysterious powers concentrated in the storm.

When the American military landed on a remote island in the South Pacific during World War II, the islanders were amazed by America’s fantastic cargo—planes, trucks, refrigerators, canned food. We follow John Frum believers today as they struggle to preserve a culture in danger of being lost to the modern world. SCREENS WITH: VOYAGE: INTO THE DEPTHS OF KANALOA.

As part of HIFF’s Keiki Courtyard Cinema, Ward Village and HIFF present a special free screening of PAPER PLANES. Dylan Webber, an imaginative 12-year-old boy, has a knack for folding and flying paper planes. After discovering his talent could take him to the top at the World Junior Paper Plane Championship, Dylan prepares to take on powerful rivals. With a great challenge soaring ahead, and a goal to fly into the number one spot, there’s no telling how far he can go.
As part of the free Courtyard Cinema series, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock’s birth, Ward Village, the Vilcek Foundation and HIFF are proud to present SPELLBOUND (which also celebrates its 70th anniversary this year). Following the film, there will be an intimate post-film screening discussion with the late director’s granddaughters, as they discuss his work and his life outside of the filmset. When Dr. Anthony Edwardes (Gregory Peck) arrives at a Vermont mental hospital to replace the outgoing hospital director, Dr. Constance Peterson (Ingrid Bergman), a psychoanalyst, discovers Edwardes is actually an impostor. The man confesses that the real Dr. Edwardes is dead and fears he may have killed him, but cannot recall anything. Dr. Peterson, however, is convinced his impostor is innocent of the man’s murder, and joins him on a quest to unravel his amnesia through psychoanalysis.

2015 FALL FESTIVAL
EBERT YOUNG WRITERS PROGRAM FOR THE ARTS NOVEMBER 12 - 22, 2015 | DOL
HIFF 2015 is launching the first EBERT YOUNG WRITER’S PROGRAM FOR THE ARTS in Hawaii. In a swiftly changing media environment, informed writing and film criticism is vital to a strong film culture and industry. This program’s mandate is to broaden and strengthen film criticism culture in Hawaii and teach young writers classical, as well as current methods and tasks in critical thinking and writing by reviewing films and interviewing filmmakers in a live festival setting. In an age of Yelp, Rotten Tomatoes, TV episode recaps and unboxing videos on YouTube, critical reporting has morphed in a culture where everyone has an opinion. Digital media allows for a diversity of voices yet poses challenges for writers seeking employment in the field. HIFF’s will address these issues and better prepare participants for a potential career in writing in digital and print media. The program will be led by Chicago-based award winning filmmaker and film critic Kevin B. Lee, who’s written for major outlets like RogerEbert.com and is the director behind TRANSFORMERS: THE PREMAKE (a desktop documentary) that has screened at digital media festivals and art galleries around the world. Lee will serve as program advisor and will also bring in guest speakers to interact with the young critics in the program, including visiting film critics, writers and filmmakers. The 8 young critics are chosen through an open call, and the program is open to local high school and college students. There will sessions throughout the Festival, where the young critics will meet as a team and participate in a forum about film criticism, utilizing new media, and interacting with visiting film critics, writers and filmmakers attending HIFF. The participants will also be assigned to write short reviews, features and interviews that will be published on HIFF’s website, and also gain full access to the Festival as an industry and press delegate.
ABOUT KEVIN B. LEE Kevin B. Lee is Chief Video Essayist at Fandor. He has made over 250 video essays exploring film and media. His award-winning TRANSFORMERS: THE PREMAKE was named one of the best documentaries of 2014 by Sight & Sound Magazine and played in several festivals including the Berlinale Film Festival Critics Week. He was supervising producer at Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies, and has written for The New York Times, Sight & Sound,Slate and Indiewire. Follow him on Twitter at @alsolikelife.

SPECIAL EVENTS
HIFF DOCUMENTARY LAB SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14 | 10:00 AM - 3:00PM | DOL
ANATOMY OF OSCAR DOCS WITH OSCAR WINNERS FREIDA LEE MOCK AND JAMES MOLL In an intensive workshop led by Oscar-winning filmmakers Freida Mock (MAYA LIN, ANITA) and James Moll (LAST DAYS, FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH), participants will discover and analyze the qualities that make some documentaries stand above the rest. Viewing excerpts from films such as MAN ON WIRE, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, and SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN, we’ll examine key components of the production process and will answer the question: What are the common ingredients in documentaries that win Academy Awards? This four-hour lab offers an in-depth analysis of recent Academy Award-winning documentaries to reveal what makes them great and what we might apply to our own films. This is an ideal workshop for both aspiring filmmakers and experienced documentarians that are about to launch into their next project.
ABOUT THE MENTORS FREIDA LEE MOCK Freida Mock is an Academy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker of feature length and short form theatrical documentary films that include the Oscar feature winner MAYA LIN: A STRONG VISION and the Oscar nominated short films ROSE KENNEDY, A LIFE TO REMEMBER; SING! NEVER GIVE UP. She has received numerous best director festival awards, including the DGA for MAYA LIN. Mock’s newest feature documentary movies ANITA – Speaking Truth to Power, about the life and times of Anita Hill and G-DOG about a Jesuit gang expert were both selected by the U.S. State Department for its American Film Showcase diplomacy initiative to be shown at US embassies around the world. Mock’s films focus on stories about art, history, politics, and creativity and include: RETURN WITH HONOR, the story of American fighter pilots surviving as POWs in Hanoi, a presentation of Tom Hanks and Playtone; WRESTLING WITH ANGELS: PLAYWRIGHT TONY KUSHNER; and SING CHINA! filmed in China prior to the Beijing Olympics featuring the world-renowned LA Children’s Chorus. Mock was the first Governor elected to the new Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and served as Chair, and was also Co-chair of the DGA Documentary Awards selection Committee with James Moll.
JAMES MOLL James Moll’s career as a documentary filmmaker has earned him an Oscar, two Emmys and a Grammy. Moll has directed and produced such films as FOO FIGHTERS: BACK AND FORTH about the 16-year career of the rock band Foo Fighters; the sports adventure RUNNING THE SAHARA, executive produced by Matt Damon; INHERITANCE, about the daughter of a Nazi concentration camp commander; and THE LAST DAYS, executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Beyond feature documentaries, Moll’s Universal Studios based company, Allentown Productions, has produced programs for television and the web. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Moll established the non-profit - Shoah Foundation with Steven Spielberg for recording and preserving more than 50,000 ‘visual histories’ of Holocaust survivors. Moll serves on the Executive Committee of the Documentary Branch of the Motion Picture Academy, and is chair of the Directors Guild of America Documentary Awards.
