ALOHA FROM HIFF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND HIFF PRESIDENT The Hawaii International Film Festival presented by Halekulani is proudly celebrating its 36th Anniversary as the leading film festival supporting film and filmmakers from Asia, the Pacific, and North America. As the vanguard forum of international cinematic achievement in the Asia-Pacific region, HIFF endeavors to recognize new and emerging talent, promote career development and original collaborations through innovative education programs, and facilitate dynamic cultural exchange through the cinema arts. HIFF 36 proudly presents 177 films, with 19 U.S., 22 International, and 19 World Premieres from 41 countries. Highlights include Opening Night Film, THE LAST PRINCESS, the true story of Princess Deokhye that is a beautifully filmed and acted drama from Hur Jin-ho, the director of Korean modern classics CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST and ONE FINE SPRING DAY. Our Centerpiece Film, LION, is another true story about family bonds starring SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’s Dev Patel in what is sure to be an award winning performance. As well our Closing Night Film, YOUR NAME., which is also already considered an animated masterpiece making box office history in Japan. Halekulani Corporation, HIFF’s key presenting sponsor, will once again present the Festival’s coveted Halekulani Golden Orchid Awards for Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Short Film. Also being honored this year at the HIFF 36 Awards Gala are famed Hong Kong actor Simon Yam, Oscar winning producer of SPOTLIGHT, Nicole Rocklin, and the legendary actress and martial arts star, Cheng Pei Pei. Once again, we sincerely thank HIFF’s key presenting sponsor Halekulani and all our sponsors for their vital support. A warm thank you to the dedicated “Hiffies” who continue to support in numerous ways to keep HIFF alive and thriving, and a personal thank you to the HIFF Staff and Board of Directors, who tirelessly dedicate themselves to HIFF’s mission and the unique experience that HIFF brings to our island community here in Hawai’i. On behalf of the HIFF Board of Directors and the HIFF team, we extend our warmest mahalo nui loa!

The Golden Orchid is bestowed upon the narrative and documentary films that best express artistic and technical excellence and promote cross-cultural understanding. Like the rare endemic orchids of our native Hawaii, these awards recognize singular achievements amid collective beauty. Each nominated film furthers the Hawaii International Film Festival mandate to entertain, enlighten and empower. Our international jury will select the films that articulate this manifesto consistent with the cross-pollination of words, ideas and images that comprise the kinetic and visceral power of film.

Under the oppressive Japanese colonial rule, Deok-hye (played by Son Ye-jin), the last Princess of the declining Joseon Dynasty, is forced to move to Japan along with her older brother. Deok-hye desperately misses her people would do anything to return home. However she is kept in isolation in Japan, and her efforts are in vain. But when her childhood sweetheart Jang-han appears in disguise as an imperial officer, her hopes for freedom and her return to her country are rekindled. Based on the heartbreaking, and uplifting true story, THE LAST PRINCESS is one of the most powerful Korean films of the year.

9-NOV 8:00 PM DOL · 13-NOV 12:00 PM DOL Five-year-old Saroo is separated from his mother when he falls asleep on a train and wakes up thousands of miles away in Calcutta. He must fend for himself via dumpster diving and evade captors lurking in the mean streets until he ends up in an orphanage, and is soon adopted by an Australian couple (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman). Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, Saroo (played with great emotional depth by SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’s Dev Patel) sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home. Also starring Rooney Mara, LION (adapted from Saroo Brierley’s amazing memoir) is where determination and family bonds beat with a mighty heart.

HONG KONG SAR CHINA, BHUTAN, NETHERLANDS 2016 | ENGLISH | 66M DIRECTOR: TOBIAS REEUWIJK 8-NOV 6:00PM DOL · 10-NOV 3:30PM DOL The Kingdom of Bhutan is a small Vajrayana Buddhist country in the foothills of the Himalayas. A large part of their heritage is the use of thangkas – intricately painted scrolls that aid in meditation and act as a form of spiritual and historical storytelling. Bhutan’s Royal Princess gets unexpected help from an American art conservationist in a race against time to save the ancient paintings in a country which is rapidly becoming more modern. Director Tobias Reeuwijk and the Princess of Bhutan will be in attendance.
Award-winning filmmaker Kimi Takesue turns the camera on her resilient grandfather who has lived in Honolulu for nearly a century. As she captures the cadence of Grandpa Tom’s daily life, he shares his life story of immigration, love, loss, and endurance. Shot over six years, this intimate meditation on family and absence expands the vernacular of the home movie to consider how history is accumulated in the everyday and how sparks of humor and creativity can animate an ordinary life.
Set in the late 1920s, THE AGE OF SHADOWS follows the cat-and-mouse game between resistance fighters trying to bring in explosives to destroy key Japanese facilities in Seoul, and Japanese agents trying to stop them. Caught in a dilemma, a Korean-born Japanese police officer contends with his actual situation and his instinct to support a greater cause. Breaking box office records, famed director Kim Jee Woon’s latest film is Korea’s official Academy Award foreign film entry.
Ford, a surfing instructor from the Philippines, has been told his whole life that he’s the son of Francis Ford Coppola and that he was conceived during the on-location filming of APOCALYPSE NOW. He has wasted his youth waiting as his mother petitions the director to acknowledge Ford as his son. As the surfing season ends, Ford is forced to confront his past actions, inactions, and the stories of his life.

On a warm spring day in 2015, the Tamaki family – the largest immigrant family on Okinawa’s Yaeyama Island – takes a journey back to the home they’d left before World War II: Taiwan. Little by little, the visit steers them out of the disorientation of their memory and identity. Filmed entirely by the Tamaki’s grandson, a rock singer from Tokyo, this heartwarming film spans 80 years in the life of one diverse East Asian family.
Award-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with a powerful tale of family ties broken and remade. The brilliant Hiroshi Abe stars as Ryota, a struggling novelist who works as a private detective. Fighting a serious gambling problem and estranged from his ex-wife, Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and to find a lasting place in the life of his young son – until a stormy summer night finally offers them a chance.
Aiman is a 28-year-old Malay correctional officer who recently transferred to the territory’s top prison. At his new workplace, Aiman begins to take an interest in the charismatic 65-year-old sergeant Rahim – the long-serving chief executioner of the prison. When Rahim’s assistant suddenly quits, he asks Aiman to become his apprentice. Aiman knows that his father was executed by Rahim. Will Aiman shun this haunted past to take over as the next chief executioner?
After her car breaks down, Miss Liang seeks refuge at a coffee shop called Cafe 6. To pass the time, the shop owner shares a story about his youth in 1996, when Min-lu and Bo-zhi were inseparable. Min-lu is secretly in love with Xin-rui, while Bo-zhi is attracted to Xin-rui’s best friend Xin-yi. While the four teenagers share a close friendship, they wonder: can they still stay committed to one another after graduation?

Channeling the best of old-school Hong Kong action movies into his street-fighting extravaganza, Yue Song clearly loves action and mindless fun, two things in this film that come together as seamlessly as his character Wu-Lin’s mullet and headband. Ancient kung-fu clans, superhuman powers, colorful characters, gangsters with hundreds of cannon fodder subordinates, laser gates, and secret-training bunkers come together to create an on-screen spectacle that plays like a 1980s kid’s kung-fu fever dream. -NYAFF

From director Nobuhiro Yamashita (LINDA LINDA LINDA, LA LA LA AT ROCK BOTTOM) comes a quirky romance starring Yu Aoi and Joe Odagiri. Loner Shiraiwa is a bit on the down and out. Unemployed and living in a small apartment, he attends a local vocational school to learn carpentry. One day while out with a friend from school, he meets the beautiful but very strange Satoshi. Set in present day Mumbai, the story follows the life of serial killer Ramanna, who is inspired by Raman Raghav, an infamous serial killer in the 1960s. His strange obsession with Raghavan, a corrupt cop with a drug habit, takes twists and turns as the film becomes a lurid and engrossing thriller of cat-and-mouse where the line between good and evil is easy to cross. PSYCHO RAMAN premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Studio Ghibli’s first-ever international co-production is a partnership with an Oscar-winning French animator to tell an enchanting tale of man and nature. It begins, elegantly but straightforwardly, as the tale of a lone castaway surviving on a desert island. Whenever he attempts to leave on a makeshift raft, a massive red turtle always thwarts his escape. The reason for this is the central mystery of the film, in which Isao Takahata (GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES) serves as artistic producer.

The prequel to hit summer film TRAIN TO BUSAN is the craziest zombie thriller this fall! Written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho (TRAIN TO BUSAN, KING OF PIGS), this animated film chronicles the inception of a zombie outbreak in Seoul, told from the perspective of two unlikely heroes – a homeless man and a young runaway girl. When a homeless man is bitten by a dog, he contracts an infection that quickly spreads, releasing hordes of zombies across the city.
SHIVAAY is the story of an extraordinary man in an extraordinary circumstance. In this explosive action film reminiscent of TAKEN and CLIFFHANGER, Shivaay is a Himalayan mountaineer who may seem like an innocuous everyman until he is pushed over the edge. Leading a peaceful life in the Himalayas, he is forced to leave his comfort zone to protect his family and will do whatever it takes to end the villains who wish to destroy his idyllic life.

Nearly a lifetime has passed for three sisters who were born on the Hawi Sugar Plantation in Hawai’i. Now octogenarians, they reflect on a tragic event that occurred decades ago. The intimate camera and lingering pace in this cinéma vérité work chronicle the passage of time while unraveling a dark family secret.
Renowned actor Simon Yam (THE TENANTS DOWNSTAIRS, ELECTION, SPL) will be in attendance for a special post-screening discussion! SPARROW is a sprightly pickpocket gang caper that pays eccentric homage to French cinema with a eclectic jazzy musical score. In one of his coolest performances, Simon Yam plays the leader of said gang, who has a good thing going until they lose their groove with the introduction of a mysterious dame. A breakaway from the usual Johnnie To crime films, SPARROW is an exercise in pure cinema, rooted in what makes Hong Kong truly cinematic.
Simon Yam stars in this taut, sexy thriller as a voyeuristic landlord who uses his tenants as personal entertainment. Having installed cameras in every room of his building, he begins to fill the building with tenants and spy on them daily. But one female tenant, Yingru, eludes him completely. As he becomes suspicious about the men who disappear into her room, he turns the lives of everyone in the building upside down.

In a country locked between Egypt and Israel, Gaza's youth is growing up with very little perspective - occupied and jobless. But against this background there is a small movement. Weary of the daily 'state of emergency,’ they seek meaning and perspective to their lives through surfing. Ibrahim, who has a dream to to construct a surf club and meeting place for Gaza’s surfers, has the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, which becomes a life changing experience. Surfing for many is fun, but for Gaza’s youth, it is an expression of defiance and, ultimately, hope.

Co-presented by the Hawaii International Film Festival, the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the Asian Film Awards Academy, and the Doris Duke Theater at the Honolulu Museum of Art. With financial support from Create Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Film Development Fund of the Hong Kong SAR Government. This year’s Filmmaker in Focus is dedicated to legendary actress Cheng Pei Pei.This special program will feature a series of screenings as well as talks and panel discussions with actress Cheng Pei Pei in attendance. Screenings and events will be held at Regal Dole Cannery Theaters, the Doris Duke Theater, and the University of Hawaii. Cheng Pei-pei is one of those rare names in cinema who returns to thrill and surprise audiences again and again. Born in Shanghai in 1946, Cheng relocated to Hong Kong when she was 14. Armed with a high school education and six years of ballet training, Cheng joined the Shaw Brothers' performing arts training course, which served as a springboard for her into a career as an actress with the famed Shaw Brothers Film Studio. During her years at Shaw Brothers, she made over 20 movies of which most were wuxia (martial arts) films. Cheng was synonymous as the "Queen of Swords" in classics such as COME DRINK WITH ME (1966), GOLDEN SWALLOW (1968), DRAGON SWAMP (1969), and THE LADY HERMIT (1971). After a slight respite from moviemaking to relocate to the U.S., Cheng intermittently traveled back and forth to Hong Kong for film work. Auteur Ang Lee brought Cheng back into the limelight by casting her as the Jade Fox in the Oscar-winning CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Cheng subsequently transitioned to international films including the U.K. film LILTING (2014).

CHOKE MISREPRESENTATION: ASIAN PACIFICAMERICAN IMAGES ON SCREEN 5-NOV 3:00PM – 4:00PM | DOL | FREE Diversity and inclusion have been a hot topic in the film and television industry this year. A recent study by the USC Annenberg School of Communication reported that in 2015, only 14 films out of the top 100 box office earners included a lead from underrepresented groups. There was not one lead role performed by an Asian American; Native Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders don't even significantly register in the study. Things are changing, but are they changing fast enough? Join filmmakers and actors for an open and frank discussion about the past, present and future of Asian American and Native Hawaiian inclusion and representation in film, television, and media.
HIFF DOCUMENTARY LAB 6-NOV 11:00AM – 3:00PM | DOL | FREE In an intensive workshop led by Oscar-winning filmmaker Freida Mock (MAYA LIN, ANITA), participants will discover and analyze the qualities that make some documentaries stand above the rest. Viewing excerpts from films such as MAN ON WIRE, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, and SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN, she'll examine key components of the production process and will answer the question: What are the common ingredients in documentaries that win Academy Awards? This four-hour lab offers an in-depth analysis of recent Academy Award-winning documentaries to reveal what makes them great and what we might apply to our own films. This is an ideal workshop for both aspiring filmmakers and experienced documentarians that are about to launch into their next project.

MY HONG KONG
Where East meets West Our city is a fusion of East and West. Now, youngsters, both Chinese and Western are embracing one of the oldest performing arts: Cantonese Opera. A packed calendar of diverse cultural activities and events showcases our creative, cosmopolitan and innovative spirit. This is OUR HONG KONG. Why not make it yours?
“With a French father and Chinese mother, I live the cultures of East and West. I am fascinated by the art and theatre of Cantonese Opera - not just its rich heritage but also the makeup, costumes and drama. Chloe Ng Brossard Student of Cantonese Opera
