Franco Mostert will be a key man in the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions. A player who often doesn’t receive the praise he deserves, Mostert’s value to the Springboks in this series was driven up by injuries to Lood de Jager and RG Snyman. Mostert formed a formidable lock combination with Eben Etzebeth against Georgia and for the South Africa ‘A’ team in their midweek match against the Lions. Mostert finished the Test against Georgia having hit the most attacking rucks and second for carries among

y the time the Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 2019, Lukhanyo Am was

regarded by many as the world’s best outside centre. His recent performance for South Africa ‘A’ against the British & Irish Lions suggests his status remains unchanged. Though his career quickly shifted gears after making his Test debut in 2017, Am took the back roads to arrive in the Bok starting XV. His career began with provincial minnows such as the Valke, Border and Eastern Province where his long-term career prospects break that is often difficult to find when performing away from the spotlight dominated by the bigger unions. Am refused to be defined by his somewhat unfashionable surroundings and held onto the belief that hard work would eventually pay off. It did, and the Sharks came calling for the talented centre at the end of 2015. His new home in Durban came with meaningful game time and exposure,

On attack, a remarkable ability to orchestrate the backline – the hallmark of all great flyhalves – and an almost instinctual ability to find space, identifying even the slightest weakness in a defensive line and directing the attack to exploit it. His clarity of vision and speed of decision-making is what stands him out as one of Europe’s premier attacking flyhalves, a man who always appears to be two steps ahead of everyone else. Biggar is no slouch in defence either. one for any team, but particularly so when facing South Africa. His robustness in the 10 channel will give the Lions security in the knowledge that the Springboks will not be making easy metres there. Stuart Hogg – along with SA-born winger Duhan van der Merwe and scrumhalf Ali Price – will end that drought at Cape Town Stadium this evening. The Scotland captain may not be the tallest in stature, but in rugby terms he is a giant. Assessing Hogg’s can’t be done without appreciating his attacking prowess. Hogg’s all-round kicking game is well refined. Capable of producing booming clearances he is equally adept at finding space behind the opposition with perfectly-weighted jabs.
