FAST FACT Etzebeth has captained the Boks on 12 occasions

Since making his Test debut in 2012, Etzebeth has grown as a leader and is the most experienced player in the current Springbok squad. He captained the Boks through 2017, but also stood in for Siya Kolisi when the current Bok captain was unavailable in 2019. ‘His best attribute is that he’s a physical animal,’ said former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. ‘There are certain players in rugby that others dread coming up against. Eben is one of those players. He gets stuck in. ‘A lot of opponents tried to provoke him in the early stages of his career. The All Blacks were very good at pushing players in that manner. Eben didn’t take the bait, though. ‘I’ve been proud to see him grow over physical presence, but he’s worked hard to add other elements to his game.’ Bakkies Botha was the Bok enforcer when South Africa claimed a series victory against the Lions in 2009. This time, the tourists will have their hands full with Etzebeth, who has seamlessly taken over Botha’s mantle.

It would be perilous, however, to assume that Williams’ abilities are limited to kicking and contesting. He has repeatedly shown himself to be a dangerous counterattacking threat with ball in hand. Most famously, against the All Blacks, it was his break from deep within his own half which set what ranks among the greatest Lions tries. Williams oozes rugby pedigree. The move would prove winger. In three seasons he scored 26 tries in the league, including 13 in the 2017-18 season to finish as the competition’s top try-scorer. Seventeen tries in 32 Tests, including finishing as the top try-scorer at the 2019 World Cup, is evidence of Adams’ potency as a finisher. A compact speedster (1.83m, 95kg), Adams unsurprisingly brings a high level of physicality to his play. His ability to puncture the defensive line even when offered little space is testament to his strength in contact. He is, however, far more than a battering ram. His size belies how quick and dynamic he is in the wider channels, equally adept at evading defenders as taking them on.
