welcome from the editor

lot of little girls dream about the future — who they will marry, what their dress will look like, and what their special day will entail. As for me, I never really understood why people loved weddings so much, until it was time to plan my own. Knowing real, godly love in my heart is what made me so excited about weddings, but I quickly realized how interesting the industry truly is when I got started. It wasn’t long before I became the proud owner of every bridal magazine I could get my hands on, and I still pick them up from time to time just for fun. I’m a planner, a list-maker, an ardent “crosser offer,” and I love a good challenge. I love to brainstorm, research, organize, imagine, create, and then revel in the finished product.

Your wedding day is so much more than a ceremony — it’s the first step you’ll take on an incredible new journey. It’s the best day of your life, and it’s only the beginning. With such an important experience on the line, why not go for something spectacular and make it happen in the High Country? The rich colors, the crisp air, and the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains will bring all of the elements of your perfect day together to create memories that will last a lifetime. Nothing complements a beautiful bride and all of her favorite things like these breathtaking mountains, and we created this styled photo shoot to show you exactly what we mean. In western Watauga County, an aweinspiring piece of private property in the Bethel community played host to this collaboration of skillful High South vendors. With a restored 1860s farmhouse off in the distance, this verdant countryside offered the perfect setting for a dreamy sunset photo shoot. Hickory-based portrait and lifestyle photographer Calah Stephens was behind the camera, with Charlotte model Nicole Brantley and actor/filmmaker Justin Turner portraying the happy couple. Our bride showed off an ultimately chic Alencon lace gown with open back, beaded scalloped lace, and covered buttons. South’s Specialty Clothiers provided the dress from the Mori Lee Collection of internationally recognized designer Madeline Gardner. The beauty pros at Serendipity Hair Studio and Boutique completed her look with a delicately side-swept braid and makeup from its Bare Minerals collection. The groom sported a classic black and white Michael Kors tuxedo from Jim’s Formal Wear, also provided by South’s. the stage for a vibrant yet sophisticated tablescape. Andi Gelsthorpe of Miss Match Rentals contributed the gold chargers and flatware, crystal and amber goblets, and cream-colored dinner plates from her Cottage White collection that brought added luxury to the set. Glimmering amethyst and quartz from Doc’s Rocks Gem Mine shared the table with handmade apple butter favors and an antique candelabrum from A Bushel and a Peck Vintage Rentals, which also contributed a vintage Underwood typewriter and antique-white vanity with crystal hardware for other aspects of the shoot. A stunning display of artistry from Fuschia Moss Floral Design brought a whimsical elegance and deep, rich colors to a one-of-a-kind flower crown for our bride, a draping bridal bouquet, and flowing centerpieces for our tablescape. Fuschia brought together products from Mayesh Wholesale Florals, Miss Kitty’s Dahlias, and Shady Grove Gardens to show off this variety of eucalyptus, garden roses, antique hydrangeas, dahlias, thistles, pomegranate, succulents, crab apple, tulips, amaranth, and more. High up on the property’s steepest slope, a 360-degree view of the Blue Ridge made for some seriously jaw-dropping bridal portraits, featuring a vintage settee from Fuschia Moss, that show just how magnificent a High Country wedding can be. The glory of the Blue Ridge can breathe life into your most illustrious dreams, so why not start your greatest adventure right here amongst its boundless wonders?

hen the High Country of North Carolina is your favorite place to get away with loved ones, it naturally becomes the perfect place to say, “I do.” That was certainly the case for Katie Woodruff and Lupton Haigler, who hail from out of town but have always enjoyed spending time at the Haigler family’s mountain home in Banner Elk. With their hearts set on an outdoor wedding in the Blue Ridge, this happy couple turned to the experts and the beautiful grounds of Grandfather Vineyard and Winery for a down-to-earth, lighthearted affair that would reflect their personalities.
“We are best friends and have an easygoing relationship. Lupton always has a good sense of humor and makes me laugh,” Katie said. “We wanted a laid-back day where all of our guests had a ton of fun. I tried to keep the theme more rustic with simple flowers and comfort food.” Because friends and family are an important part of life for the Haiglers, they decided to do something a little unconventional and share more than just the ceremony and reception with their approximately 120 guests. “We had all of our guests come for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding,” Katie said. “It allowed for the whole weekend to feel like 2016

a big party.” On her wedding day, Katie wore a dress from J Majors Bridal Boutique in Charlotte with a sweetheart neckline, lace overlay, and capped sleeves for a classic look. The ceremony took place along the riverside and was followed by a reception under the vineyard’s covered outdoor pavilion. The bride chose to feature baby’s breath in her floral arrangements and an assortment of ferns to keep things simple and focused on natural elements. For a relaxed environment that played up the mountain atmosphere, the couple chose to pass up the traditional wed18

ding cake for select local pies from Eat Crow restaurant in Banner Elk and displayed them on apple barrels for their guests to enjoy. “Everyone at Grandfather Vineyard was amazing to work with. We loved the scenery and the backdrop of Grandfather Mountain. They also have a great covered pavilion that made for an awesome dance floor,” the bride said. “It was a perfect day, and everyone still comments about how much fun they had. We were relaxed and got to hang out with everyone and dance to our awesome wedding band, The Deluge.” Katie, from Charlotte, and Lupton, from
Morehead City, relied on the guidance and know-how of their vendors to make this destination wedding happen. Thanks to careful planning and the hard work of local experts, their perfect day was just that. If you’re in the middle of planning your own mountain wedding, here’s the advice that Katie has for you: “Don’t stress, and take advice from the vendors you work with — they have done a lot of weddings and always have great suggestions,” Katie said. “At the end of the day, you will be married and the little things that went wrong will not matter. Just have fun.”
Katie and Lupton Haigler's wedding at Grandfather Vineyard was all about sharing the experience with their favorite folks and celebrating with style in the heart of the Blue Ridge. Award-winning wines, expertly crafted dinner and desserts, lively music, and a whole lot of southern hospitality made this wedding weekend one for the books.

a Lifetime of Love PHOTOS BY DEANA FLEENOR photography

T
he true love story of high school sweethearts Crystal Thomas and Garrett Heninger began in grade school in Smyth County, Virginia. They’ve loved each other for their entire lives, so it was no surprise to their friends and family when they set their sights on forever. They’re adventurous, down-toearth, and they love to travel. Of all the places they like to visit, the most special to them has always been Leatherwood Mountains Resort in Ferguson, North Carolina — a secluded, equestrian-inclusive resort that allows them to bring their own horses on their getaways. After Garrett popped the question on a New Year’s ski lift ride in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, these two knew right away they wanted to get married at Leatherwood. “Not only was the setting gorgeous, but the people who worked there were so friendly and helpful that I felt comfortable and relaxed from just being there," Crystal said. "We really wanted to share that with our closest friends and family."
At Leatherwood, the couple was able to include their own horses, "Cool" and "Pepper," and their dogs, "Caine" the German shepherd and "Weenie" the dachshund, in their special day. Crystal knew exactly what she wanted for her late summer ceremony and reception and, rather than hiring a consultant, she was able to make it all happen with the help of the resort’s fullservice staff. She wanted to include elements of lace and antique charm, and she found just that in her wedding dress at the downtown Boone bridal shop, Did Someone Say Party? “I found a gown with sleeves, an open back, and lace overlay that I never dreamed I would like, but I fell in love with as soon as I tried it on,” she said. “They were able to order it for me and it fit like a dream.” From designer Maggie Sottero, Crystal’s hand-embellished sheath gown featured a dramatic illusion lace back, illusion sleeves, a delicate scalloped hemline, and pearl buttons over a zipper

The gorgeous grounds of Leatherwood Mountains Resort gave this sweet couple the perfect atmosphere for their equestrian-inclusive, outdoor ceremony and reception. The Heningers opted out of some traditional wedding customs, like including a bridal party in the ceremony, in order to keep the day focused on them, their vows, and their future together. back closure. Glimmering with metallic lace appliqués and embroidered with Swarovski crystals that drift from the shoulder to the floor-skimming hem, the dress was the final touch to the storybook wedding she imagined. To keep the day focused on the exchanging of vows, the couple decided not to include a bridal party in their big day. In the hours leading up to the ceremony, their approximately 100 guests enjoyed horseback riding on the resort grounds, relaxing in the onsite cabins, and soaking up sunshine by the pool. Following the suggestion of their photographer, the bride and groom made time to sneak away from all of the pre-wedding excitement and meet on the deck of Leatherwood’s Cloud Nine Cabin to catch a glimpse of each other for the first time that day. “I cried the first time I saw Garrett,” Crystal said. “The Cloud Nine 22

deck has some of the most beautiful views and it could not have provided a more romantic place for us to see one another for the first time.” Family and friends gathered on that sunny afternoon for the wedding just outside Leatherwood’s Hendricks Home Place, an original 1840s two-story log home. Escorted by her father, Crystal crossed the property and approached the ceremony on horseback. The day ended with an evening under the stars at the resort’s outdoor pavilion. The newlyweds are now embarking on their next great adventure — a new life together in Montana. “I look forward to seeing where life is going to take us and really finding ourselves as a married couple,” Crystal said. “I am so excited because we are embarking on this huge crosscountry road trip as a married couple and we’re doing it just for us, just because we want to do it.”

or the area’s hardworking event professionals, winter in the High South is often a much different experience than peak wedding season, which typically falls between April and November every year. The off-season gives them a chance to catch up on the responsibilities that come with managing a small business, but also provides an opportunity to collaborate with other vendors and let their imaginations run wild. In January 2015, local wedding consultant CeCe Hampton approached the duo behind 24

Fletcher and Fletcher Photography with an idea to use the newly renovated space at Boone Golf Club’s Fairway Café for a styled photo shoot. “As soon as CeCe contacted me about doing a shoot at the golf club, I knew right away that I wanted to go for that old-school, vintage golf look. That’s what I had in mind,” Corina Fletcher said. “Because we were indoors, we really tried to focus on all of the details that went into the look.” The participating pros agreed to aim for a timeless and sophisticated beauty, and they
called on Kelly Williams of A Bushel and a Peck Vintage Rentals to help make it happen. “We decided to evoke that old-school feeling in the pictures with the fireplace, the vintage furniture, and all of the little elements that brought it all together,” Corina said. The vintage elements were paired with bold, dramatic colors and textures for a stunning look that can transcend trendy fashions and imagery that will keep catching eyes for years to come. “I loved the rich colors — they just really worked. I really like the pictures of the bride with her lipstick and the jewels,” Corina said. “I love the glitter on the tablecloths and the gold on the invitations. Everything was bold and it was beautiful.” Keeping up with the work of the High Country’s wedding experts is a great way to get inspired when you’re planning your own mountain wedding. “Winter and the off-season is often downtime for us, so you’re mostly doing mundane business tasks and you don’t really get to be creative. At weddings you don’t always have a lot of time,” Corina said. “So when you get to do these styled shoots, it’s so fun because you have more time to work. You can run with ideas for posing the bride and groom that you’ve never had time to try and you can really have fun with the vendors you work with.” Stay tuned for special projects like this styled photo shoot that show off what local vendors can do when they put their minds together.

she said yes! in the beginning T
he early stages of planning a wedding are filled with excitement and anticipation for the many milestones to come, like the day you’ll find your perfect dress and the day you’ll say, “I do.” There are countless reasons to look forward to your big day, but don’t forget — it’s not just a to-do list, it’s a journey and the experience of a lifetime. Making your dream wedding come true will entail a lot of decision making, but it’s all happening because of the decision you made to go through life with your soon-to-be spouse. On first thought, your engagement may seem like a simple precursor to your wedding day, but it’s so much more than that. It’s the first step toward a lifetime that you will spend with your best friend, and it’s a momentous occasion. Here in the mountains, we enjoy seasons of beautiful weather and gorgeous landscapes. In the journey toward marriage, you, too, will enjoy seasons — seasons of change, love, and growth. Chances are, you’re already thinking about how you can preserve all of these memorable experiences. So, why not document your engagement story with as much love and careful planning as you will your wedding day? The High Country is home to an impressive variety of talented photographers who will exceed your expectations at the wedding, and many of them would love to capture your whole story, beginning with your engagement. “A little rhyme comes to mind — ‘first comes love, then comes mar26

riage, then comes baby in the baby carriage.’ Professionally created portraits often follow a natural sequence marking major life events,” said Bonnie Burton of Burton Photography. “Engagement portraits are just the beginning. Documenting the joining of two families on the wedding day and then creating family portraits for our wedding couples as they have their first babies brings us joy.” We believe the awe-inspiring mountain views you’ll find here in the High South are the perfect backdrop for a dream wedding, but they can also make for some truly fabulous engagement shots. “Engagement portraits are most often the first professionally created images that a couple will have to commemorate their new relationship. The love, friendship, excitement, and romance that a couple shares shines through with wonderful intensity,” Bonnie said. “The mountains provide an endless opportunity for a variety of breathtaking, beautiful locations — flower-filled meadows, fairytale forests, rocky streams, romantic cliffs. We love the layers of textures and colors that can be found in the High Country.” If you’re already planning to get married here, why not let your engagement portraits to show off that same,
picturesque mountain beauty? Spring and summer weather offers crisp, clear views of the Blue Ridge and sunny days that are perfect for your engagement photos. The rich colors of changing leaves and the transforming landscapes of autumn can create something more vibrant, and the white of winter can create whimsy in your photos.

As you embark on this great new adventure in life, don’t forget to document where it all began. “No matter the season, engagement sessions are always an opportunity to create romantic, lively, thoughtful, and spontaneous portraits. Winter weather adds a magical, intimate mood to the images we create,” Bonnie said. “There is something snuggly about cold weather and warm coats, colorful hats and scarves, and furlined boots. The winter-world provides a quieter, less hurried, reflective backdrop for engagement portraits.” As you embark on this great new adventure with your best friend, don’t forget to document where it all began. ong before the bride and groom exchange their vows, and even before the proposal of marriage, there’s a pivotal moment in every couple’s story that’s often overlooked, but remarkable nonetheless. Meris Gantt, lead planner for The Whole Shebang event consultants, teamed up with local photographer Joy Davis in March 2015 to kick-start a creative collaboration that would pull in several other experts from the High South’s expansive wedding industry. With sights set on staging an unconventional styled photo shoot at The Blowing Rock, they brought in Kelly Perry of Philosophy Flowers, whose knack for storytelling and vision for dreamy artistry ushered in a romantic and poignant concept. “Saying ‘yes’ to a marriage proposal is really fun and exciting — this is the 'yes' that’s recognized and celebrated. But have you thought about the ‘yes’ that was said first?” Kelly said. “It probably wasn’t an audible ‘yes,’ but it was grand. It was the moment when the groom decided that she was it — she was the one he loved and wanted to call his bride. There is a ‘yes’ before the ‘yes,’ and it’s significant.” The team of talented artists shared a common goal: to tell the story of a groom’s perspective on finding his perfect match. In the photography, the groom explores through stones and other natural elements along one of the park's trails for a hidden gem. His search is symbolic of every groom’s journey to find love, and his discovery of the geode represents the moment he found his match and his decision to choose her forever. The shoot also aimed to highlight the grandeur and stunning views of The Blowing Rock. “It took place at such an iconic location that is one of the cornerstones of our area,” Meris said. “You can feel the history as you walk the trails and look out over the mountains.” Styled shoots and other projects like this one give local vendors a chance to work together in a purely creative environment and use their united vision to inspire their clients, their colleagues, and other professionals in the wedding industry. “The events we put on are for our clients, but styled shoots are a chance for all of us to really come together,” Meris said. “It’s a great way for us to showcase our work and produce something that is uniquely ours. There’s a great sense of community in pulling together a project just for fun.”

f you’re in the early stages of planning your wedding, chances are you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all of the decisions you have to make over the next couple of months. Sure, you can do it on your own, but why not alleviate some of the stress by turning to a local expert? Not only are wedding planners in the High South knowledgeable and experienced in orchestrating special events, they’re connected to an expansive variety of local vendors in the area. If that’s the kind of expertise you’re looking for, call them up today and set up an appointment to get started on planning your perfect day.
MERIS GANTT The Whole Shebang
What does a consultant do?
Why should I get married in the High South?
Elizabeth: “The primary responsibility of a wedding consultant is to take care of the client and their overall needs and wishes. It is their role to create bonds and communicate on the back end so that everything results in happy clients, happy vendors and a successful event.” Meris: “Wedding consultants are here to make the planning process as enjoyable as the wedding itself. It’s all about knowing the client well enough to be able to read their mind, know what they want, and make decisions on their behalf without having to bother them with all of the tiny details.”
Elizabeth: “Visually, with the majestic beauty all around us, everything is so gorgeous. I’ve lived here my whole life, so I can also say that we have some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.” Meris: “Aside from the gorgeous weather, cool summers, and pastoral setting, the High Country is a warm and inviting community. The feedback I get from clients is about how impressed they are that all of the wedding vendors up here are team players — always willing to pull together to make every event a success,” Gantt said. “I think we have a really unique group of professionals up here that are hardworking, honest, and always put the client first.”
Why should I hire a consultant? Elizabeth: “As consultants, we are heavily involved in the wedding industry itself and we work hand-in-hand with our local vendors. We can handle the logistics of bringing all of the elements together. We can help you with things you might not even be thinking about, like which caterer would be the best for your venue and which photographers know the best overlooks and the best time of day for lighting. Planners give you valuable insight because this is what we do every day and we have the connections to do it. And, we’re awesome.” Meris: “Most of our clients live out of town and have no idea who to hire for a High Country wedding. Wedding consultants can help couples navigate the confusing world of local venues and vendors to ensure they get lined up with the right team that fits their style and budget.” 32
We got together with two of the area’s premier wedding planners for a Q-and-A session that will help you hash out your concerns and start the planning process on the right foot. Meet Elizabeth Hempfling, owner and principal planner at Events by Elizabeth Ashley, and Meris Gantt, lead planner for The Whole Shebang event services. They’re both board members for the local event services network, High South Event Professionals, and they’re both here to help you every step of the way. Here’s what they have to say about their roles in the local wedding industry:

What’s the most important piece of advice you have for brides planning mountain weddings in our area? Elizabeth: “Really give a lot of consideration to the time of year that’s best for you and make sure that you hire professionals that will work as a team to take care of you. Also, make sure you have fun. Enjoy the process, because you’ll only get to do this once. It really needs to be special so you can walk away with good memories.” Meris: “Have a rock solid bad weather plan. I know we all want a perfect, sunshiny wedding day — believe me, that’s what we want, too. But, when that doesn’t happen, we want to have a plan B that still puts a smile on every face.”

A Wedding Story
PHOTOs by BURTON PHOTOGRAPHY
aroline Howe grew up right here in the High South, but she now calls the nation’s capital her home. Inspired by the glory of the mountains that she knows and loves, she brought her groom, Benjamin Clapp, back here for a chic and sophisticated autumn affair. The couple met while working together for a startup company in Washington D.C., but felt drawn to the hills of the High Country to exchange their vows. The bride described her vision for the big day as “southern, Blue Ridge Mountain glam.” “Fall is my favorite season,” Caroline said. “I love October and the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the fall.” They were married on a colorful day before 150 guests at the historic St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church, followed by a reception at the nearby Blowing Rock Country Club. The bride chose to fill the environment with as many of her favorite flowers as possible. “Hydrangeas were everywhere — on the chandeliers, on the tables, and carried by bridesmaids,” she said. Caroline wore the Preston dress by designer Amsale, which she found at L’elite Boutique in Boston. The silk magnolia slim fit-to-flare gown features a sheer neckline and a sheer back with bow detail, and she paired the dress with a lace jacket from designer Marchesa. The couple hired an all-star team of local experts to bring their wedding plans to reality, including the duo at Burton Photography. “Caroline and Ben are smart, sophisticated, and funloving,” said Bonnie Burton, who captured the day from behind the camera. “They really cared about their wedding photography and were willing to give us the time and opportunity to create beautiful images of them on their wedding day.” Knowing the community holds a special place in the bride’s heart, the Burtons were able to include many of her favorite spots in town in the couple’s romantic, after-ceremony portraits.

The historical beauty of St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church created a romantic environment for this couple's ceremony, which was followed by an oh-sosophisticated reception at the upscale Blowing Rock Country Club on this dreamy day.
“Caroline and Ben’s wedding was a gorgeous affair on a fantastic fall day. Every detail had been given thoughtful and artistic attention,” Bonnie said. “Incorporating places that have sentimental value just adds that much more to the images.” After the wedding, friends and family joined the couple in the tower at St. Mary’s to ring the church bells and let

the town know they were married. For other brides who envision a chic High South wedding, Caroline recommends turning to local vendors who make beautiful events their business. “We hired the very best of the best in the area to make our day special,” Caroline said. “I loved my vendors. Hire them and they will make your day a dream.”

Making Your Memories Last Through Photography
W
hen you look back years from now on the day you said, “I do,” nothing will breathe life back into your experience like an album of timeless photography. Making your big day last forever is a monumental responsibility, so make time to research your options and go with a photographer you can trust to keep your memories alive. North Carolina’s High Country and surrounding communities are home to an impressive variety of professional and fine art photographers, who are talented, educated, experienced, prepared, and ready to give you their best work. They understand how important your wedding day is to you, and they’re up for the challenge. Not only are these artists well versed in their craft, they offer you a level of expertise that off-the-mountain photographers just can’t match. They know the ins and outs of the community, have worked with the network of other local industry vendors for years, and have captured weddings at most, if not all, of the area’s breathtaking venues. Putting together a destination wedding can be a lot of work, but it’s made easy when you hire professionals who know their way around. Even if miles of highway separate you from them during the planning process, these photographers are only a call or a click away. They

know the best outdoor locations for the images you want to achieve, the best time of day to capture the light in these beautiful spots, and how to show off the glory and the colors of the Blue Ridge in your portraits. The unique environment, economy, and weather patterns of the High South can quickly throw a wrench into wedding day and photography plans, but local experts have the experience and the insight it takes to get the perfect shot, no matter what. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but your wedding photos will be priceless. Why turn to other photographers when the best of the best are right here on the mountain? Making the decision to hire a local photographer is just part of the process. The next step is to choose one of the many talented folks. Here’s our advice for finding the right one and things to consider in doing so:
GO PRO
Asking a friend with a nice camera to shoot your wedding may sound like a way to save a few bucks, but capturing the most important day of your life is a responsibility you don’t want to dole out to just anyone. There are plenty of ways to make your budget work for you without sacrificing high quality photography, and it’s totally worth it to spend a little more on what you’ll get from these local experts.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but your wedding photos will be priceless.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
When it comes to making decisions about your wedding, sometimes advice from other brides is the most helpful way to figure out what’s what. Go online to read about the photographers in the area and check them out on social media. Look for feedback from other clients and ratings in online reviews.
STYLE CHOICE
Every photographer has their own style and, while many will offer a combination or agree to the one you ask them to achieve, their best work happens when they’re letting their creativities flow and shooting in the style that best suits their own personalities. There are many styles to choose from, so figure out what you like and get to know photographers who specialize in that look. Go for the fine art look if you’re looking for truly dreamy, dramatic, jaw-dropping artistry. If posed shots of your family and friends are more important to you, look for photographers who tend to lean toward portraiture. Opt for a pro with photojournalistic style if you’re looking for a variety of candid shots that tell the story of your wedding one detail at a time. If your heart is set on an album that touches on a mixture of styles, find a photographer that’s versatile and can give you what you want.
TAKE A LOOK
During your initial consultation with the photographers on your mind, ask to look through their portfolio, or a collection of other weddings they’ve done in the past. Browse through galleries that show the whole day from start to finish and think about what you’re seeing — does this style of photography catch your eye? Are they doing a good job of capturing all of the details? Is there a good balance of product shots, posed portraits, and candid shots?
THE WHOLE PACKAGE
High Country photographers offer you an array of services and packages that can meet your needs with items like engagement sessions, bridal portraits, ceremony and reception photography, a CD of finished images, wedding albums, fine art print40

ing, online viewing, and so much more. Packages often begin somewhere within the $2,500-$4,500 range, although some photographers will allow you to personalize the package you choose to include the products that are right for your experience.
SHARING YOUR IMAGES
Before you hire someone, find out if the package you’re buying includes rights to the images or if you’ll need to pay extra to purchase them. This is an important question to ask if you’re planning to share your photos on social media, post them on the web, or print them on your own. Many contracts dictate that photographers have the right to publish your images or use them for promotional purposes, so make sure you discuss those details if you think that could be an issue for you.
WHAT TO EXPECT
It will take your photographer a lot more time to edit and prepare your images than it will for them to shoot your wedding, so be realistic and try to understand that it may take them awhile to get your proofs back to you. Talk to them about how many shots you’ll get from them, whether or not they’ll be retouched, and how long it will take for you to get them back.
MAKE A LIST
Give your photographer a list of shots you have to have and the people or details you want to include in your photos. Make sure the contract you sign with them gives them plenty of time to accomplish all of the shots on your list.
WORK TOGETHER
When you find the right photographer for you, meet with them in person and get to know them before the big day. Chances are, they’ll be by your side every step of the way, from the preparation to the exchange of vows and even the after party, so make sure you’re personalities work well together. Consider hiring the same photographer to do your engagement session, your bridal portraits, and your wedding day. The more they get to know you, the better they can capture your best moments the way you want to remember them.
2016 TAG LINE
We have compiled the most frequently asked questions of our Photographers. We hope they can help you!
Question
Is it worth the money to hire a professional photographer?
Answer
Don’t skimp on wedding photography. The images are all you have to walk away with once the event is over and complete. Make sure you choose a photographer that will truly capture it the way you want to remember it, and make sure the services in their contracts are adequate to match up with your needs.
Q A
o
Why should I get to know my photographer? Make sure that you meet them and feel comfortable with them, because they are probably one of the vendors you’re going to spend the most time with, especially on the big day. They’re going to be right there with you all day, so make sure you feel comfortable working alongside them.
Q A
o
Why should I work with my photographer before the wedding day? Consider hiring your wedding photographer for an engagement session or bridal portraits. It’s important for them to get to know you, too, so they can understand your personality, what you’re looking for in photography and how to capture your memories in the right way.

o you love the idea of getting married in the sweeping, open countryside, but don’t want to give up that classic wedding glam? Turn to this unique local venue and find a balance between the two in the quaint community of Trade, Tennessee. After all, who said a farm wedding can’t be ultra chic? A quick 15-minute drive from downtown Boone will lead you to the farmstead, which is situated just across the North Carolina/Tennessee state line. The farm sits on 105 picturesque acres and offers plenty of room and ample facilities for weddings and special events, including on-site lodging. “I think couples enjoy the rustic, natural beauty of this place, and a lot of people are looking for a venue that offers that. They like the simplicity of everything,” said Denise Loven, who owns and operates the farm with her husband, Fulton. “They essentially have the opportunity to do what they want with their event. They don’t have to use any specific vendors or any specific space — it’s a canvas for them to paint their own image.” The onsite 1940s farmhouse can sleep eight people and invites guests to step back in time to an age of simple, country lifestyles. mont wood stove add to the home’s cozy charm. For weddings, the home makes a great place for families or bridal parties to rest, enjoy the nostalgia, and prepare for the big day. The property also features space for tent sites and an RV hookup, as well as a bubbling spring, chirping frogs, a gold fish pond, cow fields, hiking trails, wildflowers, and so much more. Brides who live in larger metropolitan areas and want to go for something rustic can bring a little bit of the city to the country at venues like White Fence Farm. Choosing the stunning, natural setting of the property will create a whimsical and romantic backdrop for your wedding. Then, bring in everything you love about black tie affairs and step
up your personal touches with lavish textures, colors, and details. Photographer Ellen Gwin, who has recently captured weddings at the venue, said the farm lends itself to a unique blend of beauty and luxury in a secluded, pastoral atmosphere. “It can be really elegant for such a rustic location, which I love,” Ellen said. “Just because you want to get married in a field or a farm environment doesn’t mean you can’t have a classy event.” Do you have your heart set on the country glamour look? Turn to White Fence Farm or one of the High Country’s other rustic, outdoor venues and bring in your own chic elements of sophistication and elegance. 2016

hen it comes to choosing and booking the best site for the ceremony and reception, every couple has their own unique set of wants, wishes, and must-haves. Maybe you already have your heart set on one of the area’s breathtaking venues. Maybe you’re keeping an open mind as you begin the planning process, or maybe you have no idea where to start. Whatever the case may be, we’re here to help! Finding the perfect venue is an essential part of planning your wedding, and choosing the right one is likely the first major decision you will make when it comes to organizing your event. Whether you’re looking for an elegant social club, an extravagant castle, a charming farm in the countryside, a sophisticated private residence, a quirky cottage, or a mountain resort, there’s a location in the High South that’s right for you. Each of the area’s venues boasts a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a unique perspective on what makes a wedding day special. The experts behind each one offer a variety
of services, as well as the knowledge, experience, and creativity to ensure the festivities go off without a hitch. As you envision the best day of your life, take time to get to know your options. Find the venue that meets the needs of your family and your guests and enjoy the experience as your fairytale unfolds.
Things to Consider When Choosing Your Venue: ✓✓BUDGET — First thing’s first. Of course, you want your big day to be perfect and you don’t want anything to get in the way of making it happen, but it’s important to be realistic about your budget. Know what you can afford to spend before you start shopping for venues and keep that in mind as you visit your favorites. ✓✓SIZE — Even if your guest list is still in the works, you probably already know whether you’re interested in an extravagant affair with hundreds of people or a smaller get-together with a select group of friends and family. If you don’t have a final count, use a ballpark number

to make sure the venue can accommodate the crowd you want to host. ✓✓STYLE — Decide what style you’re going for and find a venue that fits with the wedding day you envision. Whether you’re looking for something rustic and natural, sophisticated and elegant, dramatic and extravagant, or laidback and low-key, take into consideration the existing elements of the locations you explore and choose one that lends to the look you want to achieve. ✓✓LIGHTING — Visit a potential venue during the time of day you plan to get married. Checking the place out first thing in the morning won’t give you a realistic view of the venue if you’re hoping for a sunset wedding. Sunlight plays an important part in any event, especially if you’re outside, so ask to see the venue at the right time of day and pay attention to the way the light brings the location to life. Also, ask about other lighting options that can be made available to set the right mood. ✓✓RAIN CHECK — There’s no place more perfect for an outdoor wedding than the mountains of the High Country. But what happens

your ceremony and reception in the same location, keep an eye out for venues that have space for both aspects of your big day and can accommodate your guests in transition between the two. ✓✓RENTALS — Does your preferred venue have tables and chairs for you to use or will you need to rent them from someone else? Rentals can be a costly addition to your budget, so keep that in mind when you’re making this decision. Make sure the venue offers everything you need. If they don’t, make sure you have the time and the resources to get those things from a local rental company. ✓✓GETTING READY — Does the venue you like offer plenty of space for you and your wedding party to get dressed and dolled up for the big day? Make sure there’s a designated space on-site for all of your pre-wedding needs. If there’s not, make sure you can find a place close by and plan accordingly for transportation. ✓✓LOGISTICS — Make sure the venue you choose offers ample parking for the number of guests you want to accommodate. Parking doesn’t have to be a deal breaker when it comes to choosing your venue, but keep in mind that you may have to spend more on providing transportation for your guests if there’s nowhere for them to park. ✓✓ACCOMMODATIONS — Would you prefer to spend the weekend on-site and be right in the middle of the action? Some venues offer on-site accommodations that can keep you and your most important guests together throughout the weekend. If this is something you’re interested in, start by looking into facilities that can offer your VIPs a place to stay. ✓✓BEFORE YOU BOOK — Found the perfect spot? Don’t get the checkbook out just yet. Check with the important people in your life — family, wedding party, officiant, consultant — and make sure the date you’ve chosen works for them before you pay any deposits.

✓✓ALL IN ONE — If you’re planning to host

when it rains on your big day? When choosing a venue for your outdoor affair, consider what options you have (if any) for bringing the whole thing inside if you’re faced with unfavorable weather. ✓✓LAYOUT — Pay attention to the size and layout of the grounds. If you plan to have a large crowd, make sure there will be enough room for everyone to be seated comfortably in the space you choose. If you’re opting for a more intimate affair, think about how you will utilize the space to bring everyone together. ✓✓PARTY ESSENTIALS — If you’re planning an after party that will keep your guests on their feet, make sure the reception site you choose has a dance floor large enough to accommodate your group. If you want to include an open bar in the festivities, consider choosing a reception venue that has everything you need on-site. ✓✓THE VIEW — Worried about the stress that comes from shopping or DIY-ing your way to an elaborate slew of wedding décor? Not sure what you’ll do with all of that stuff when the party’s over? If spending a fortune on décor isn’t on your to-do list, opt for a site that boasts breathtaking mountain views and can blow your guests away on its own. Lucky for you, the High Country offers a variety of venues that can pack a lot of wow factor with minimal décor. ✓✓THE 411 — If you have a specific venue in mind, get as much information about it as you can before making a commitment. Talk to vendors who have worked weddings there before, or even couples who were married there, and get the scoop on how it all played out. Ask what they liked or didn’t like about the place and decide whether or not you have reason to share in their concerns. ✓✓THE FOOD — Consider your catering needs. Some venues will require you to use in-house caterers and bakers or will ask you to choose from a list of preferred vendors. If your heart’s set on a particular menu, caterer or cake, make sure you find a venue with a flexible policy on bringing in food

Help Your Guests Find a Place to Stay
D
estination weddings in High South are the perfect opportunity for your guests to make a weekend out of the trip and enjoy a mini-mountain getaway. Whether you’re expecting just a few or a long list of out-of-towners, it’s always a good idea to be courteous to your guests and recommend a place for them to stay while they’re here to celebrate you. Many of the area’s wedding and special event venues feature on-site lodging that’s perfect for the couple, the bridal party, close friends, and immediate family members. Although it would be nice to keep all of your favorite people together in one place, there may not be enough room at your venue for everyone to spend the weekend, especially if you’re planning a larger event with a long list of guests. Reserving room blocks at local hotels can be a great way to make the trip convenient for your loved ones, and some of those places may offer group discounts for folks who book early to stay for your wedding. In addition to a wide variety of quality hotels for all budgets, the High Country is also home to a vast array of cabins, mountain homes, and lodges
that will really get your guests in the mood for a weekend in the hills and will have them feeling right at home in the Blue Ridge. When recommending lodging options, consider the proximity of each place to your venue, other amenities they can offer, and what price range would be most suitable for your guests. Search the web for accommodations that will meet the needs of your friends and family and narrow it down to two or three that seem like the best fit for everyone. To avoid the penalty of unused rooms, start by blocking a small number of rooms and add more later if it looks like you’ll need them. Don’t forget to communicate your recommendations to your guests in a timely fashion so they can book their rooms in advance. Mail a card explaining hotel block information with your invitations, including directions to and from the lodging site to your venue and details on any transportation you will provide for them. If you’re creating a wedding website, put all of those details under a tab of their own to make sure your guests can easily access the information.

A Wedding Story
Beka & Dean Topodas
Blue Ridge Mountain Club
November 1, 2014
T
he story behind the union of this Virginia couple is unique, but poignant and sweet in the most wonderful way. Fate brought educators Beka Larson and Dean Topodas together in the area of Washington, D.C. in early 2014, and the rest is history. “We were both working at the same school. He is an administrator and I’m an art teacher,” Beka said. “I started working there in February, we started dating in April, and then it just took off like a rocket.” Just 15 weeks later, they eloped by the Potomac River in front of a small group of friends and family in a private ceremony. “My son, Hayden, was in the wedding, as well as Dean’s daughter, Lydia. My first husband passed away from cancer, and I’m very close to his family — they took me in and adopted me,” Beka said. “They’re very good people and Dean wanted to have my late husband’s father perform the ceremony, so he did. He became certified to marry us and we got married on the bank of the Potomac.”

To get more of their friends and family involved in the experience, they chose to have a second, more traditional ceremony a few months later at the home of Dean’s parents in the Blue Ridge Mountain Club of Blowing Rock, North Carolina. “Dean’s family has a tradition of people eloping and then having a second wedding to get married in front of everyone. His parents and his grandparents did the same thing,” Beka said. “He is very much a traditional kind of guy and wanted the big ceremony and walking down the aisle — it took everything I had to convince him not to wear a top hat. “I don’t like attention at all, so I just wanted to do the elopement. We compromised and decided to do something very intimate and warm, but still very elegant.” A week before the big day, perfect weather was in the forecast for their outdoor Nov. 1 wedding, which was scheduled to take place with the jaw-dropping mountain views in the background. However, they woke that day to freezing temperatures, potential snowfall, and winds of up to 45 mph that made it nearly impossible to get married beneath the tent that was already set up outside. With just hours to go before the main event, and with guidance from consultant 76

Elizabeth Hempfling, the couple opted to move the wedding inside Dean’s parents’ home. “Hiring Elizabeth and Kristi and their team was the best decision we ever made,” Beka said. “With four hours left, they literally cleaned out the entire inside of his parents’ house, moved furniture around, and made room for a dance floor. What they did was awesome.” Despite the major last-minute change in plans, the wedding went off without a hitch once moved indoors and created an even more personal atmosphere that was shared with 60-65 guests. “I’d say it was really kind of perfect,” Beka said. “We’re both very casual people, so we were able to have something very classy, elegant, and high-end, but still have conversations with the staff as if we’d been friends with them forever.” It may have happened unconventionally, but Dean and Beka’s story is one of an extraordinary love made even more marvelous by the beauty of the Blue Ridge. “Everyone there is so down-to-earth, honest, and real, which is a big difference from D.C.,” Beka said. “We fell in love with Boone while we were there. Ideally, we’d like to retire there and live in the mountains forever.”
Unusually cold November weather and wild mountain winds forced Beka and Dean Topodas to move their outdoor wedding inside. As it turned out, the intimate setting within Dean's parents home at Blue Ridge Mountain Cluh in Blowing Rock made for an even more personal and memorable affair.

hoosing and hiring a caterer for your reception is a huge decision, so make the time to do your homework and research your options before you take that step. If you’ve opted for a full-service venue, you may have committed to using their preferred or in-house caterers. If not, you will need to research and select the right caterer for your event. Whatever the case, start brainstorming menu ideas and make a shortlist of potential vendors that you’re most interested in hiring. When you’re ready to talk details, make sure you have handy all of the information they’ll need from you — your budget, your venue, your

wedding date, and the number of guests. Decide whether you’re shooting for something formal or more relaxed. Consider these popular options: CATERING OPTIONS Serve a plated meal: If your heart is set on an over-the-top formal affair, this traditional option will provide your guests with a fullservice dinner. It may be the more expensive choice, requiring more servers per guest than other options. Offer a buffet: Display your favorite foods in a more relaxed atmosphere. You may save a little money when hiring the wait staff, as
guests will be helping themselves to the dishes on the table. It will be harder to determine how much food you need, so you may wind up with leftovers. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres: If you’d rather skip dinner and go straight for the party, you may opt for food stations, smaller plates, and passing around hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Your caterer can help you decide how many and what drinks to serve and whether or not you need to hire a bartender. GET TO KNOW YOUR CATERER When you’re ready to call up potential caterers, make sure you ask the right questions
so you can make the right choice based on what you can afford and what best fits your vision. Here are a few questions for the caterer to get you started: • Do you have a license and carry liability insurance? • Do you recommend any food choices for the style of my wedding? • Can you offer a special menu for children? • Can you offer special diet options like vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, or kosher? If so, will cost me anything extra? • Will you offer me a tasting before I make my final decisions on the menu? • How will you determine the cost? • Will you provide the necessary wait staff? • Will you provide a banquet manager or an on-site coordinator? • Do you offer any rentals? Hire the caterers that can best meet your needs and started bringing your reception plans to life. Make sure you have plenty of contact information for your caterers and plenty of time to help them choose the perfect menu. serving alcoholic beverages Want to serve drinks at your reception? Talk to your wedding consultant, venue manager, or caterer to decide how to stock the bar, who will serve the drinks, and what you can afford. very element of your wedding day is a chance to reflect your personality, and the cake you choose will be no exception. Whether you’re turning to your venue’s preferred bakery or you’re bringing in an outside vendor, choosing a dessert for your reception is a time to really get creative and share your favorite foods with your favorite folks. If you’ve been exploring cake designs and can’t seem to make a decision, here is our advice on how to narrow it down: ✓✓Keep it Classic — Nothing says sophistication quite like a traditional, elegant, white wedding cake. Go for a few simple layers or stack it sky high. ✓✓Fresh and Fruity — Weddings are all about celebrating the perfect match, right? Then it only makes sense to pair your cake with piles of fresh local fruit, which can add bold colors and something surprisingly sweet. ✓✓Fetching Flowers — You carry them, wear them, and display them on your wedding day, so why not add them to your cake? Incorporate
fresh cut flowers for a little extra romance. ✓✓Go Naked — Dial back the drama, bid adieu to the outer layer of frosting, and let the ingredients speak for themselves with the honest-to-goodness beauty of a “naked” cake. ✓✓Be Bold — White cake never goes out of style, but who said you had to follow the rules? Branch out and let your favorite colors do the talking with a vibrantly decorated cake. ✓✓Get Creative — Looking for variety? Ditch the cake concept and go for cupcakes, cookies, macaroons, doughnuts, truffles, marshmallows, cake pops, crêpes, or a variety of them all. ✓✓Candy Shop — Break out a collection of sweet little snacks and add a candy bar to your display. You’ll feel like a kid again and break up your reception with lots of color. ✓✓Grab a Slice — Looking for something a little more down-to-earth? Enjoy some downhome indulgence with an array of fresh-baked local pies.

A Wedding Story
Meagan & William Polan
Westglow Resort & Spa
July 25, 2015
W
hat happens when two world travelers fall head over heels and decide to get married in the High South? An epic love story, of course, and a jaw-dropping wedding to match. Meagan Gunning and William Polan each left the comforts of home — Pennsylvania for her and Texas for him — to pursue careers in service with the Peace Corps. They crossed paths while serving overseas and quickly realized they were meant to journey through life together. “We met in Azerbaijan while serving in the United States Peace Corps. We fell for each other immediately,” Meagan said. “We both loved the work we were doing and being able to share that kind of experience and challenge with your partner is rare and wonderful. He is my best friend.” These two jet-setting Good Samaritans knew their big day would double as a reunion for their loved ones and friends. So, when it came time to tie the knot, they chose the southern hospitality and the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where they’ve been spending holidays with family for several years. “We live abroad, but we wanted the wedding to be welcoming and relaxed for everyone, so we chose an outdoor venue. Since we love traveling and have spent our entire relationship doing so, we decided to have a travel-themed wedding,” Meagan said. “It was easy to fall in love with the area, so it was a swift decision when it came time for picking a venue.” Meagan already had a dress on hold when she found her perfect gown in New York, and she made a last minute switch when she knew the second one was made for her. “I already had a dress in Brooklyn that I thought was the one, but the minute I tried mine on I never wanted to take it off. It has capped sleeves and an open back,” she said. “It is a sheath style with really light, flowing fabric. It is very romantic and timeless.” The Polans’ day featured unique and creative elements that reflected their personalities, their experiences, and their world travels. The details included a variety of maps and

globes on display, tables named after cities they’ve visited together, and a tapas and sangria cocktail hour in honor of their engagement in Spain. “The whole day was colorful and full of love. We don’t live a very traditional lifestyle, and I think our wedding reflected that,” Meagan said. “We rocked out at our ceremony to Florence + The Machine and Borns instead of using a string quartet. Our decorations were homemade and our families joined together to make all of our family recipes for the dessert table.” Hands down, Meagan said opting to hire local vendors and the team at The Whole Shebang was the best decision she made in the process of pulling her wedding together. “I was planning a wedding from abroad on a tight budget and it was such a relief to have someone I trusted helping me find local venues and take care of the ground work that I couldn’t do via Skype,” Meagan said. “Meris understood exactly what I wanted and helped me create a perfect day. If anything went wrong the day of, I wasn’t aware because Meris and her team were such rock stars. “The local vendors and wedding planners are fun and down to earth, know the area so well, and are all one big wedding planning family. They love to work with each other, and that makes things so much better.” After they exchanged vows, the new Mr. and Mrs. Polan turned to head toward their reception festivities when their friends and family surprised them by releasing butterflies into the air. “The butterflies were an amazing surprise from my mom. You can see my look of shock and joy in the pictures, and it’s pretty hilarious,” Meagan said. “Our favorite song, ‘Electric Love’ by Borns, was blasting, butterflies were everywhere, our friends and family were cheering, and I had just married my best friend. It was the happiest moment of my life.”

here’s no doubt about it — saying “I do” is a momentous occasion. It will be the first day of the rest of your life with the person who is just right for you. The day you exchange your vows will be a remarkable milestone on its own, but choosing to share it with the people who are near and dear to your heart will make it all the more meaningful. Your friends and family have been there for you through all of your ups and downs, through thick and thin, and through the good times and the bad. Those special people may be your parents, grandparents, siblings, childhood best friends, or others who have played important roles in your life. Sometimes, though, they’re not people at all. More and more couples are incorporating their furry family members into their wedding festivities, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are home to a countless variety of venues that will let you do just that. Matt Powell Productions Your dogs are so much more than pets — they’re your dearest friends, your favorite roommates, and your biggest fans. They delight in spending time with you and love you unconditionally, so why would you not want to include them in your big day? Whether they ease your stress while you’re getting ready, walk you down the aisle, sit in the front row during the ceremony, or join you at the after party, there’s no reason you can’t share your wedding day with your canine companion when you’re getting married in the High Country. The Beauty of Local Blooms W
the flowers for them,” said Shady Grove’s Susan Wright. “It’s nice for them to know what’s in bloom, but they don’t have to learn about all of the types of flowers or figure out how many of each one to get.” If you’re going for the assorted wildflower look, ask the grower or your professional floral designer to help you choose a variety of natives that will bring your vision to life. If you’re opting for something more traditional and tailored, ask your designer to incorporate local flowers into an arrangement that aligns with something more upscale. “If they want something more elegant and formal, then the specific flower doesn’t matter as much as the shape of the arrangement,” Fuschia said. “You can use local flowers for other styles, too. It’s all about the design.” Whatever style you’re going for on your big day, locally grown flowers are a great way to create something stunning for your mountain wedding. “They create a sense of place within the context of a person’s wedding,” Susan said. “They’re not only using things that grow here locally, but things that add to the atmosphere that you can’t get anywhere else.”

hether you call these mountains home or you’re planning a destination wedding in the High Country, there are plenty of reasons to go local with your blooms and choose cut flowers from an area grower for your ceremony and reception details. Local growers like Shady Grove Gardens in Vilas, North Carolina, which offers organic and pesticide free products, can give you an impressive assortment of both classic and unconventional options for your floral arrangements. The logistical advantage of using local flowers may be the most obvious, but it’s still an important one to keep in mind. “You’re supporting a local grower, so you aren’t leaving the same environmental footprint you would be if you were shipping flowers in from places like South America,” said area floral designer Fuschia Moss. “I think that’s a huge trend — the perspective of a local, environmentally friendly, green wedding.” Opting for cut flowers grown in the High Country is a practical solution for any wedding, whether you’re a DIY bride or you’re turning to an expert designer. “Some people will come to us and ask us to choose

his local couple is all about sweet, simple, happy love, and the same was true for their wedding day. Lindsey Truesdale and Seth Sullivan exchanged vows in a ceremony surrounded by all of the things that make them smile — family, friends, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. These two describe their relationship as “one of constant growth and never-ending entertainment, love, and support.” They wanted to be sure their big day was a comfortable celebration that would reflect their personality as a couple. “We knew we wanted to get married in the High Country because it is home,” Lindsey said. 88

“One of our first dates was a beautiful afternoon spent at Valle Crucis Park, making it a special place for us, so it was at the top of our list when we were deciding on a venue.” Loved ones pitched in right and left to bless to the soon-to-be Sullivans and took on several roles in making their perfect day happen. Friends and family members each made their own contributions, like creating the stationery, doing the bride’s hair and makeup, bringing table linens, making decorations by hand, and even preparing the barbecue and the cupcakes for the reception. “Our community and our loved ones mean the world to us, and incorporating their various talents in as many ways as possible made it a particularly
special day,” Lindsey said. “Seth’s grandmother was ordained a month before the wedding so that she could perform the ceremony. “My aunt provided her collection of antique bottles and Seth’s parents grew the flowers. To top it all off, our buddies at Galileo’s in Boone threw us an awesome after party. Everything felt so personal and sentimental, like a team effort.” Lindsey wore a minimalist style dress she found online, which fit this not-so-girly girl like a glove. “It is a floor length white dress with an open cowl back and long sleeves,” she said. “After trying it on with the sash, I knew it was perfect. I felt like myself — comfortable and casual enough, but

also like I was the prettiest I’d ever been.” The wedding day also featured a special guest — “Coach,” the couple’s beloved Great Pyrenees who has literally been a lifesaver. “We were living in Valle Crucis when we got engaged, but, unfortunately, our house caught fire and we had to move. When the house fire happened in February, Seth was at work and I was asleep,” Lindsey said. “Coach woke me up in time to get out of the house safely. He’s our hero fur child, and we knew we wanted him to at least make an appearance so everyone could see him and so we could have some family photos.” After the ceremony, the couple and their guests enjoyed their favorite southern side dishes catered by Proper restaurant with their homemade barbecue, along with cider from Appalachian Mountain Brewery. Later that afternoon, the two took a romantic stroll around the park to reflect on their memorable day, which focused on the people and the mountains they love so much. “My favorite moment was walking down the aisle and around the park with my husband,” said the new Mrs. Sullivan. “There was a sense of relief that we had pulled it off, and also pure joy knowing that we were starting a new adventure together. We walked over to this incredible field of goldenrod with our photographer and neither of us could stop smiling.” 2016

FLOWERS
loral designers in the High South are so much more than florists — they’re creative experts who produce truly jaw-dropping works of art using a variety of breathtaking natural elements. Flowing bridal bouquets, captivating centerpieces, ethereal flower crowns, one-of-a-kind boutonnieres, and so much more — they can do it all. The area’s unique climate gives you a vast array of options when it comes to fresh cut flowers. Go for something classic, choose something unconventional, or visit a local grower and pick out your favorites on-site. Either way, you can find the best blooms for your ideas right here in the mountains and let these talented professionals create something incredible for you. Have ideas for the flowers you want but don’t know the names? If you’re unfamiliar with the varieties that are available to you but want to convey your vision to the florist, search the web for photos that inspire you and share them with your local expert.
BEAUTY
Your wedding day will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life, so to say you want to look your best would be an understatement. You don’t just want to look good, you want to be stunning, and rightly so. Luckily, the High Country features an array of professional salons and beauty experts who are here to make sure you’re absolutely picture perfect. Opt out of those harmful rays and still glow on your big day with a natural-looking spray tan. Call on a local stylist to keep your locks expertly trimmed, colored, and cared for as you prepare for the experience. Enjoy a manicure and pedicure with your bridal party to kick off your wedding weekend. Turn to on-site pros who will come to you and get you all dolled up for the ceremony and reception. Remember, all eyes will be on you and only you, so it’s important to make sure you look and feel your best on the big day. When you’re happy with your dress, hair, and makeup, your confidence will show in your smile and in your photography.

any enduring love stories begin with solid friendships, and the same has been true for Karlee Dunn and Sean McGarvey, who were married at Blowing Rock’s Broyhill Park on a beautiful spring afternoon. These high school sweethearts from Lenoir, North Carolina went off to college together at N.C. State University in Raleigh, where they now live as Mr. and Mrs. McGarvey. “Our relationship is based on friendship, and I think that’s a very important part of our marriage,” Karlee said. “We are very open with each other and make all of our decisions together.” They love living in the state’s capital city, but
they looked back to western North Carolina when it was time to choose a wedding venue. “We wanted to get married in the High Country because we both enjoy the mountain scenery. We envisioned our wedding as elegant and romantic,” the bride said. “We wanted the atmosphere of our wedding to be fun for our family and friends who were celebrating the next chapter of our lives.” Karlee wore an A-line dress from Asheville’s Wildflower Bridal that features ruffled details and delicate lace. “I absolutely love my dress. It was very light and fit the elegant style I wanted to have,” the bride said. “My mother-in-law also made my veil and added small pearls to it so that it would
match perfectly.” Friends and family mean so much to this couple that they incorporated them into the big day in several ways, including each of their siblings and their Border collie, Gracie, in the ceremony. “I would say that our wedding complemented our personalities perfectly. We both love spending time with our family and friends, and they were a big part of the wedding,” Karlee said. “We also chose to have a memory table, which included pictures of our grandparents who are no longer with us.” The new Mrs. McGarvey said her favorite moment from the big day was exchanging the vows they wrote for each other with her groom.

“We both decided not to share them with each other until that moment, so the only other person who knew what we were going to say was our preacher,” she said. “We had both put so much time and thought into what we were going to say to express how much we love each other and about the commitment we were making.” The couple opted to host their reception at the Green Park Inn, one of the High Country’s most celebrated historic treasures. The evening also featured a variety of personal touches, like monogrammed corn hole boards to keep the guests entertained during cocktail hour. “We both felt that the inn had a very elegant feel and would help set the atmosphere for our wedding,” Karlee said. “We chose a lighter color pallet to stay within the romantic feel and asked 98

our florist, Desi Parker, to keep the centerpieces very simple by using only one type of flower.” Although they were open to the advice of local professionals, Karlee and Sean took the time to consider all of the options when planning their wedding and made sure they were making every decision together as one. So, what’s Karlee’s advice for planning a storybook wedding in the High South? “Choose a wonderful photographer and videographer. They captured moments that I did not remember at first, but now I can look back on each one,” she said. “Have as much fun as you can and don’t stress about every detail. At the end of the day, your wedding day is about the commitment that you and your husband are making and starting the next step in your lives together.”
This Blowing Rock wedding featured an outdoor ceremony in Broyhill Park, followed by a timelessly romantic and elegant reception at the nearby Green Park Inn. A light color palette and sweet special moments made for dreamy photography and the perfect day for the McGarveys.

RENTALS
it's all in the details
nless you’re using a completely full-service venue, you’ll likely need to borrow some or all of your furniture and equipment from a local rental service. Rentals may seem like just another detail, but adequate seating and table space during the ceremony and reception comprise one of the most important aspects of keeping your guests comfortable throughout the course of the event. Tables, chairs, dance floors, linens, tableware, tents, plants, décor, columns, arbors, and other structures — local rental companies can provide you with all of these things and more. In the High South, there are several local rental pros that specialize in unique, vintage, antique, and collectable furniture and décor pieces that can add something surprising to your experience. High-end or vintage tableware, glassware, flatware, cutlery, and linens can take your recep100

tion dinner from standard to extraordinary, and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces can elevate the atmosphere from average to elegant at your wedding, your reception, or even in your bridal portraits. Because the things you’re renting are the essential components of your ceremony and reception plans, it’s important to remember that you make these arrangements in plenty of time to reserve them for your big day.
L
TRANSPORTATION
ocal consultants will always recommend that you provide shuttle services or other transportation to and from wedding events for outof-town friends and family. Driving highways or back roads in the mountains can often be intimidating or nerve-racking for visitors, especially after dark, so make your guests feel right at home by providing them with
safe, reliable transportation. Providing transportation is important, especially if you’re serving alcohol to your guests. You love them enough to include them in your big day, so take care of them and keep them safe on the roads. The area’s transportation experts can offer you shuttles, trolleys, limousines, carriage rides, and even high-end luxury vehicles to get you and your guests to and from your venue. Looking for an interesting way to leave the wedding with your spouse? Whether you’re looking for a classic car, a restored old truck, a horsedrawn carriage, or an extravagant limo, these are the same local pros who can send you off in style.

make sure you choose performers and tunes that best fit the environment you’re aiming to create. Live music from a band or individual performers can lend to a genuinely romantic and personal feel. DJ services can offer you prerecorded music, which means it’s playing nonstop, even when the DJ needs to take a break. Whether you choose to have one or the other, there are music pros here in the High Country that can help you set just the right mood on the day you say, “I do.” Check with your wedding planner, venue manager, sound technicians, and band or DJ when putting together a song list. They can help you choose appropriate music for your ceremony, as well as a mix of your favorite songs and crowdpleasers that will have your guests on their feet at the reception.

BANQUET HALLS
More and more couples are opting to invite their guests for a full weekend of events rather than just an afternoon or an evening, and that’s especially true for destination mountain weddings. Even for local brides, there are a variety of wedding-related events that you’ll host before the big day, like bridal showers, family get-togethers, and rehearsal dinners. Area banquet halls in the High South give you plenty of additional space for festivities besides the ceremony and reception in locations that are convenient to you and your guests.

A Wedding Story
Jennifer & Solomon Sorcher
Art of Living Retreat Center April 19, 2015
Spiritual and Spontaneous J
ennifer Betesh and Solomon Sorcher left the bright lights and the big city for the serenity of the Blue Ridge and were married high in the hills on a misty mountain day. Sol proposed in early spring after this free-spirited couple traveled from Maine to Georgia along the Appalachian Trail. “In March, Sol proposed while we were visiting my parents in New Jersey,” Jennifer said. “We didn’t want to wait another day to get married, so we planned the whole wedding in two weeks!” Both coming from orthodox Jewish families, the bride and groom planned for a traditional Jewish ceremony in an intimate atmosphere. Still feeling inspired by their journey through Appalachia, they found the perfect venue at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone. “I wanted our wedding to be very low-key and very natural, channeling the Garden of Eden,” Jennifer said. “Both Sol and I could not imagine getting married anywhere but in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” This go-with-the-flow bride found her ethereal gown in Manhattan just three days before they ventured south for the big day. “We gathered our closest friends and family, road-tripped 14 hours from

New York to North Carolina, and spent the weekend hiking, meditating in the mountains, and just living freely and spontaneously,” Jennifer said. “We traveled with 15 friends and we all jumped into Trout Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 3 a.m. the night before our wedding.” Following Jewish tradition, they were married under a chuppah, or a canopy that symbolized God’s watchfulness over the couple on their wedding day, which was built for them from birch wood by local florist Fuschia Moss.
“It was a very spiritual day, especially being so high up in the mountains,” Jennifer said. “It was pouring rain, so we couldn’t see the mountains, but there was something so serene about looking out the window and just seeing white clouds, like we were elevated above the physical world.” The Sorchers are now back in New York City running Solifornia Fishing Company, a creative brand they established that was inspired by their travels through Appalachia.
Although they’re back in the big city, their wedding photography brings each of their favorite memories back to life. “The best decision I made was to have our wedding in Boone and to have my closest friends and family experience the Blue Ridge Mountains in such a spiritual way,” Jennifer said. “Standing under the chuppah with Sol as the Rabi blessed us was my favorite moment. You could hear the rain tapping against the windows in a beautiful, cleansing tune.”

urrounded by friends, family, and fresh air, childhood friends Dawn Fouse and David Pennington tied the knot beneath a willow tree at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. These two nature lovers from Christiansburg, Virginia incorporated their favorite elements from the great outdoors and relied on the help of local experts to make their dream wedding a reality. “We met in the sixth grade at E.B. Stanley Middle School in Abingdon,” Dawn said. “We were instant best friends.” They grew up together and stood by one another until their high school graduation in 2004, after which they were separated and lost touch. The friendship they’d enjoyed as kids quickly blossomed into true love when fate reunited them several years later. “We were reacquainted after about six years of no communication, and it’s been perfect love ever since,” Dawn said. “Our relationship is easy. We just go with the flow, we balance each other out, and we have fun.” As children, the two shared memories of visiting the Boone and Blowing Rock areas with their families to visit Tweetsie Railroad, go skiing and ice skating at Beech Mountain, and go hiking in the summers. As bride and groom, the couple elected to return to the High South, which has been special to them ever since, to exchange their vows. Dawn found the perfect Lea Ann Belter bridal gown at a shop near her parents’ home in Knoxville, Tennessee. “I put the dress on and just knew it was meant for me. It has a beautiful sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice that goes into a fluted A-line skirt, and lace overlay that cascades into an organza ruffle that falls to the ground to a chapel length train,” Dawn said. “The lace overlay matches the lace from my mom’s veil and gown from 1980, so I wore my mom’s veil in honor of her.” The resort’s outdoor space gave them endless opportunities to bring in reminders of the things they love most, like Dawn’s favorite wildflowers in her bouquet and boutonnieres for the guys made with fly-fishing lures. “My goal was for it to be a relaxed, fun party in a romantic atmosphere. That’s how we fell in love with Chetola — the willow tree as a simple but elegant backdrop was perfect,” Dawn said. “The antique creel fishing bas-

kets, the earthy centerpieces, and the birch bark cake brought it all together. We used the names of our favorite outdoor places as table names instead of numbers.” Dawn said the best planning decision she made was to hire Meris Gantt at The Whole Shebang and many other local vendors. “Meris met with me to discuss my image and ideas. Afterward, she put me in touch with vendors she felt would help bring my ideas to life,” she said. “My wedding day came to life because I started with her help and direction. “I could not have imagined using vendors who were not local to the mountains. From photography to stationery, it was helpful for them to understand that I wanted to bring out the mountains and the fly-fishing streams in all of the details. They knew the area and were able to do all of that.” Walking away from the day as Mrs. Pennington was the bride’s favorite thing about her experience, but her most memorable moment was the first time she saw her groom before the ceremony. “When I saw all of the final touches and then saw Dave for the first time, I was speechless and tearful,” she said.

lthough they never knew each other during childhood, just a few grade levels and a couple of miles separated this bride and groom for most of their lives. Micala Bare and Tyler Rash were raised right down the road from one another, but didn’t meet until their college years. They finally set eyes on each other when a mutual friend set them up on a blind date, and their love story quickly blossomed into one for the books. “It was right after my freshman year at East Tennessee State University, so I rushed home from Johnson City to meet Tyler in person for the very first time. We spent our first date getting to know each other with fishing poles in our hands,” Micala said. “After a few hours, we decided our fishing trip was embarrassingly unsuccessful, so we grabbed a bite to eat and then drove to an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There, he wowed me by popping his tailgate down and serenading me with his guitar. “When I got home that night, my mother asked me how it went and I simply replied, ‘I can’t think of a reason why we shouldn’t get married.’ Since that day, we have been inseparable — basically extensions of each other, always laughing, joking, or singing when we are together.” When the couple decided to tie the knot, there were no doubts about hosting the wedding in their hometown. “We couldn’t think of a better place, let alone a more beau-

tiful place,” Micala said. “Our story began in Ashe County, and we decided that it would be perfect to openly share our hometown with our friends and family.” Even before they were engaged, Micala spotted an ivory ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, delicate lace, and a sweeping train in the window of South’s Specialty Clothiers in Boone. Tyler knew she loved the dress, so he bought it for her after his proposal. “In passing, I was astounded by the elegance of it and I kept it in my mind months later when it was actually time to begin the search,” the bride said. “The moment I tried it on I knew I would never find a dress more beautiful.” These two “old souls” chose to have a traditional ceremony at Bethany United Methodist Church, and turned to the historic Doughton Hall Bed and Breakfast in nearby Laurel Springs for their reception. “I love history, old farm houses, all things vintage, and a touch of country,” Micala said. “I never consolidated my style into a certain word or category, but I made sure the wedding was a perfect reflection of everything I loved — an air of elegance that was somewhat like a step into the past.” The couple decorated their outdoor reception on the lawn of Doughton Hall with family heirlooms — complete with teacups, family photos, and her mother’s wedding dress on display — that added to the oldfashioned charm of this vintage-inspired soirée. The bride’s favorite memory from the day was the quiet moment they shared right before the wedding. “Tyler and I were able to hold hands, exchange letters, and talk to each other before the chaos of the day unfolded,” she said. “It helped to calm our nerves and remind us of what the day was really all about.” The groom’s best memory is just as sweet. “My favorite part of our wedding day was watching Micala, escorted by her father, come through the doors of the sanctuary and make her walk to become the official Mrs. Rash,” he said.

hen this couple from Fairfax, Virginia was ready to tie the knot, they turned to bride Leah Thompson’s hometown of Boone for a chic and charming affair in the hills. “My vision was to have the romantic elegance of a hometown wedding with a sophisticated, modern touch,” Leah said. “I wanted the ceremony to be traditional and intimate, and the reception to be a fun atmosphere in which we’d be surrounded by friends and family, celebrating our love for one another.” Her groom, Will VanLandigham, a native of the Asheville area, also calls the moun-
tains of North Carolina home, so it made perfect sense for them to turn back to the High Country for this meaningful milestone. “I did look around at other venues outside of the High Country during my preliminary planning phase,” Leah said. “I came to the conclusion that you cannot beat getting married in the mountains — the beauty of the High Country, the fresh mountain air, and the friendly local vendors make it the ideal location for a wedding.” The VanLandighams were married by the bride’s childhood pastor at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone, surrounded by the faith community in which she was raised.

“Our wedding was a reflection of who we are as people — simple, easy-going, fun, and familyoriented,” Leah said. They made it a priority to include their parents, who have shown them time and again the value of a strong Christian marriage, in the ceremony, “We received a blessing from our parents and also took a covenant of salt — an ancient covenant symbolizing our love, loyalty, and devotion to one another,” Leah said. Following their sweet and elegant traditional church wedding, they moved the party over to the Summit Trail Solarium on the campus of Appalachian State University, the bride’s alma mater. “The room embodies natural elements of trees, flora, and water features, as well as clean, modern lines and sophistication,” Leah said. “Family and friends spoke from their hearts during a champagne toast, bringing tears to a few eyes.” Guests signed their names to a rustic wooden cutout of the state of North Carolina in lieu of a traditional guest book and left with a sweet
treat from Boone’s own Appalachian Cookie Company. “We ended the night by exiting through a tunnel of swirling glow sticks and cheers,” Leah said. “It was truly a magical experience.” Now that they’re on this new adventure together, Leah says married life with Will is simply “the best.” For other brides looking for the perfect place to get married, she recommends turning to the network of talented event professionals right here in the High Country. “The mountains are the perfect venue to take the vow of a lifetime,” she said. So, what’s next for this pair of sweethearts? “Following our wedding, my husband and I moved from Fairfax, Virginia to Winston-Salem, North Carolina,” Leah said. “We are thrilled to be residents of North Carolina again and looking forward to planting our roots here. As Eric Church sings, ‘Oh, Carolina, you keep calling me home.’”

A Wedding Story
Leah & Tim Hogg
Banner Elk Winery
September 14, 2015
Enchanting Elopement W
hen these two were ready to exchange vows, Leah Owens and Tim Hogg decided to leave their busy lives behind for a few days and elope in the mountains of the High South. The bride and groom, a prosecutor and a police officer, grew up together in Jacksonville, Florida. They started dating in February 2015 and Tim popped the question seven months later. “He is someone that I have been praying for, and I feel like he felt the same way,” Leah said. “We really want to honor God through our relationship.” More than ready to tie the knot, the couple packed their bags and left the Sunshine State just days later, bound for a romantic getaway. “We were going to get married at the courthouse later that week, but we wanted to do something a little more special. We were already planning to visit Banner Elk because his dad has a cabin there,” Leah said. “The Sunday before we were going to leave we found out that Banner Elk Winery has an elopement package, and we learned that it was literally a mile away from the cabin.” Leah bought a dress from Nordstrom online and put a rush on the order so it would make it there on time. When they made it to the mountains, they drove to one of their favorite stores in Asheville to buy a tux for Tim. The elopement package included two nights in one of the winery’s villas, a tour of the winery, photography, flowers, a cake, the minister, and everything they needed for the ceremony. “We were married high on top of the mountain and we prayed before we exchanged vows. It was really cool that we had someone who we felt was a man of faith to preside over the wedding for us as the officiant,” Leah said. “Then, we went into the barn with the icicle lights

for our first dance and took photos near the lake. “It included not just a photographer, but an amazing photographer. We had her for three or four hours and it was just us, so she was able to capture almost every minute of it. Then we were able to relax in the villa, and they even had someone making breakfast for us the next morning.” Not only were they happy with all of the services that were included in their elopement package, they appreciated the quiet time they got to spend together away from their busy jobs. “We were able to have more time to focus on God and what our vows were going to mean to each other and be in prayer and devotion to Him,” Leah said. “On the actual day, there were no distractions, so it was just the two of us sharing that moment together.” They’re now back in Florida as husband and
wife, and the couple highly recommends the winery’s elopement package for any bride and groom looking for that perfect, private getaway. “As soon as you get there, they cater to everything so you can just enjoy yourself,” Leah said. “For everything that you ultimately spend, it’s really incredible. “The views were amazing. Just being able to focus on him on top of the mountain and saying my vows to him — that was definitely the most special moment.” Banner Elk Winery's elopement package offered this sweet couple from the Sunshine State everything they were looking for in a romantic getaway, including an officiant for the ceremony, a stay in the on-site villas, a fantastic photographer, and so much more.

Thank You, Photographers!

n developing our first edition of High South Weddings, we have been fortunate to build and grow friendships with many local vendors, including some of the area’s talented photographers. These folks have played an important role in the creation of this new magazine, and they are just a few of the many who document and preserve storybook weddings throughout the High Country. Not only has their artwork captured every last detail of the weddings we share with you today, their consistent communication, helpful advice, and positive attitudes have played a crucial role in our process to create, inform, and inspire through High South Weddings. These photographers have shared our mission to highlight the area as the southeast’s premier special events destination. RYAN & JOY DAVIS They took a leap of faith to help us make this inaugural edition happen, and they have become an indispensable resource for us. Our established connections to the local wedding industry yielded these new relationships, and we look forward to getting to know even more of the area’s photography pros in the future. “The beautiful artwork in our publication was made possible by the great talent of photographers,” HCPP Publisher Ken Ketchie said. “As we continue to expand and grow our brand in the coming years, we hope to befriend and work closely with even more of matt powell & FAMILY Ellen Gwin these great artists.”

T
he months and months of meticulous planning and careful attention to detail will soon come to an end, and the hard work you’ve done preparing for your big day will pay off in a big way. You may be tempted to feel a little anxious in the days and hours leading up to your wedding, but that’s really the perfect time to let go of the stress and say hello to a happy new life. Sure, all of those elements are important pieces of the puzzle — the music, the food, the cake, the flowers, the dress. Remember, though, when it’s all said and done, your wedding day is not about the colors you pick out, the food you serve, or the songs you play. It’s about celebrating you and the life you will share with the best friend you’ll ever have. 122
