2019 BEST OF HIGH DESERT PREPS

THE DAILY PRESS

High Desert Preps this month, several hundred student-athletes, parents, friends and school Earlier staff members gathered to celebrate the area’s top athletic performers. Throughout the school year, we named athletes from nearly two dozen high schools across the High Desert to all-star teams based on their exemplary performances during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Let me tell you, choosing the all-star teams was no easy task. We tried our best to keep a watch on standout athletes and also sought input from coaches throughout the region. Selecting a Player of the Year was as tough as it’s been in recent memory. This was especially true in the baseball category, where we had a trio of studs on the mound to choose from in Hesperia’s Ryan Dominguez, Victor Valley’s Bret Bowers and Adelanto’s Lee Atkinson. This year’s Best of Preps event was another success, though, and a few thanks are in order. Thank you, Tim Brown. My nerves had me trembling in the minutes leading up to my interview with the NFL Hall of Famer because I had never spoken in a public setting, let alone with one of the game’s true greats. Brown, who was our guest speaker, must’ve noticed. He gave me a pep talk, eased the nerves a bit and was an incredible person to interview on stage in front of so many distinguished guests. He offered inspiring advice during our Q&A that I hope the High Desert’s young adults in attendance took to heart. Thank you to David Dupree, who stepped in to serve as our emcee on such short notice with Daily Press President and Publisher Steve Hunt out sick. On behalf of everyone at the Daily Press, thank you to the coaches, school administrators, parents and boosters who played vital roles in these athletes’ lives over the course of the school year. We are also thankful to our title sponsors: Victor Valley College and Desert Valley Medical Group. Their continued support and generosity has enabled our athletes to attend the awards banquet at no cost. I would be remiss not to thank everyone who put in countless hours to make this evening happen, especially Chief Photographer James Quigg and our former colleague Matt Peters. In addition, Daily Press staffers Andrea Dunn (and her daughter), Megan Martinez, Danial Gardner, Cynthia Brudnak and Irene Gaulke volunteered their Saturday night to make our banquet a success.

Tim Brown and Jose Quintero of The Daily Press.

[JAMES QUIGG, DAILY PRESS]

To my wife, Luisa, who also volunteered and helped hand out certificates to our guests, I’m forever grateful. Thank you for the unconditional support and patience amid this wacky sports schedule over the years. A special thank you goes out to Lisa Woodhart, my go-to contact during the madness that inevitably sprung up in the days and minutes before the event. She’s the backbone of it all, even if she won’t admit it. Finally, this keepsake publication recognizes all our athletes and coaches of the year. They, too, are deserving of thanks for their unwavering dedication to their respective sports and teammates. We’re already looking forward to the 4th annual Best of Preps in 2020. I hope to see you there. — Jose Quintero, Staff Writer Email: jquintero@desertdispatch.com Twitter: @DP_JoseQ

Jason Rodriguez Male Athlete of the Year OAK HILLS Why he Won

Rodriguez was part of a monstrous offensive line that helped guide the Bulldogs to a 9-3 season and recapture the MRL title. In 12 games, Oak Hills ran rushed for 3,255 yards on 395 carries. Bulldog rushers averaged 8.2 yards per carry and ran for 40 touchdowns. In the spring, Rodriguez earned the MRL’s Boys Field Athlete of the Year honors after sweeping the shot put and discus. He threw 51-feet-3-inches in the shot put and 150-5 in the discus. Jason even offered a helping hand for the boys basketball team, playing limited minutes. Rodriguez averaged four points and two rebounds as the team’s enforcer, according to coach Shaun Mora, who said “Jason picked up where he left off during his junior high days, and would have been a real player had he played throughout high school.”

Jason Rodriguez and Tim Brown [JAMES QUIGG, DAILY PRESS]

Most memorable moment this season: When we beat Apple Valley for the Mojave River League title and got to celebrate with my brothers. What I love most about sports: I love that I get to have my brothers alongside me and make the best memories. Looking ahead: I will be attending USC on a football scholarship and will plan on pursuing a genealogy degree, and more.

Natalie Lin Female Athlete of the Year SERRANO Why She Won

Lin had another big year on the soccer pitch. She helped lead the Diamondbacks to a 19-5-2 record after scoring a team-high 34 goals in 24 games. She also assisted on 15 goals and was one of six Serrano players named to the MRL’s first team. In the spring, Lin made a run to the CIFSouthern Section Masters Meet in the triple jump and just missed advancing to the state championships. Earlier in the season, Lin placed second in the long jump with a 17-foot vault at the Inland Empire Championships. She also finished third in the triple jump there. Lin’s name was called twice to the stage as she also took home the Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year award. Natalie Lin and Tim Brown [JAMES QUIGG, DAILY PRESS]

Most memorable moment this season: When I broke my school’s record in both the triple and long jump on the same day at league finals. I had jumped a 37-5 in the triple and a 17-5 in long to set the records. What I love most about sports: I love the feeling of being able to improve everyday, to push myself more, and the competition in the track and field since it’s all individual. Looking ahead: I will be continuing my education at Cal Poly Pomona for track and field.

Coach of the Year Joe Kulm

Mascot of the Year Victor Valley Jackrabbits

Oak Hills Why He Won

Kulm guided the Bulldogs to the school’s first ever girls soccer CIF-Southern Section championship. Oak Hills claimed the MRL title with a 9-0-1 record, and finished the historic season 23-3-2 overall. According to MaxPreps.com, Oak Hills ended the season ranked No. 23 in the state. The CIF-Southern Section named Kulm Coach of the Year in Division 3.

We feel amazing about the season. These girls have been unbelievable all year. They’ve worked so hard, and I think it was just finally catching up to us how much hard work they put in all year. It’s almost like asking a Super Bowl team the week after the Super Bowl to go play again. You just can’t do it. It’s too tough to play the State tournament right after a big CIF final like that. — Kulm said after losing via penalty kicks in the semifinals of CIF Southern California Regional Division III tournament.

Why They Won The Daily Press established an online poll this year asking fans to vote on the “best mascot” in the area. Thousands of votes were collected during the multiweek campaign and our readers selected Victor Valley High School’s Jackrabbit as the Mascot of the Year in the High Desert. A plaque and banner were presented to the school by A Family Pharmacy Apple Valley.

COURAGE AWARD MIRAYNA MCKINNEY

ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Why SHe Won McKinney is a three-sport athlete that battled with an autoimmune disease over the course of high school. At the age of 14 she started feeling abdominal pain and had digestion problems. Turns out she had ulcerative colitis; a Google search will tell you that “treatment can help, but this condition can’t be cured.” Despite the autoimmune disease, she continued running and made the decision to

switch to a vegan lifestyle in order to help stay active once medication made it difficult to be an athlete. In her career at AAE, McKinney was named the Cross Valley League’s all-around MVP in girls track and field, and even set the school’s 400-meter dash record. Mckinney plans to pursue a career in the medical field with completing her undergraduate at UCLA and hopes to continue running track.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CHRISTA WHITE

VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Why SHe Won

Christa White has spent over four decades involved in the sport of volleyball, including 34 as coach. Last November, White wrapped up a 22-year career at Victor Valley College with a shutout against L.A. Pierce College to end the regular season. In her final season as coach, White guided the Rams to a 9-16 finish, including a 6-2 record in the Western State Conference South Division. White Graduated from Apple Valley High School in 1979 and went on to play volleyball at Texas Tech. She returned to the High Desert for a friends’ wedding in 1985 and applied for her alma mater’s open volleyball coach position. She was

hired on the spot because she had a teaching credential and Apple Valley needed a full-time teacher. She wrapped up her career with about 450 victories between Apple Valley and VVC, where she landed in 1996. White’s career includes more than just volleyball, though. She’s also coached softball for seven seasons and a couple seasons of soccer and golf and middle school basketball. She even served as a volleyball referee, and ran a club volleyball team in the High Desert for 12 years. White now hands the program to assistant coach Reina Smith, we know she will continue to have an impact as she continues to serve a few more years, teaching classes at VVC.
