Hesperia

Animal Hospital H

esperia Animal Hospital has been providing quality care for the four-legged friends of High Desert residents for many years. Located just north of Main Street on I Avenue, the two-story building has been likened to a veterinary university hospital for all of its available services and state-of-the-art equipment. Featuring a spacious waiting room

with televisions broadcasting informative health programming, there is a pet shop with supplies and four exam rooms so furry patients and their owners can be seen promptly. The first floor contains a complete surgery center, offering conventional and laser procedures, a glass-walled ICU so post-op patients can be monitored, a full oxygen chamber, and heated cages for recovery.

As part of its diagnostic equipment, the hospital has its own laboratory that can analyze samples on location. It also has a fully stocked pharmacy, an ultrasound machine, and the ability to develop quick, digital X-rays and hard copies that can be viewed by surgical specialists. Grooming facilities are located on the second floor and include board-

ing facilities for cats and dogs, run by full-time staff. The hospital offers pet insurance and affordable payment plans for those on a budget. It also has days on which seniors and those on a fixed income can get special discounts on spaying, neutering, vaccines, boosters, and physical exams. Dr. Shafeeq Ahmed has played a compassionate role in local ani-

mals’ health for more than 30 years. Evidence of this can be seen in the photographs of him with his patients and the numerous thank-you cards handwritten by grateful pet owners posted throughout the hospital and exam rooms. Dr. Ahmed has also brought on a new staff veterinarian, Dr. Ballasteros, who will bring his own unique brand of compassion and quality care for the hospital’s many patients.

Meet Our New Doctor Dr. Erick Ballasteros is the new staff veterinarian working for Hesperia Animal Hospital. Born in Los Angeles, he earned his degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. Practicing veterinary medicine since 2015, Dr. Ballasteros said he first developed a passion for helping animals as a child as he had a lot of pets. One cat he owned who suffered from dystocia, or difficulty giving birth, passed away and he wishes he could have helped it. “Now I’m here trying to make up for it.” He says he likes to keep updated on medicine’s latest developments, in particular naturopathic and clinical nutrition, focusing on natural ways to restore an animal’s health. When asked why he chose Hesperia, he likened it to a university hospital with its state-of-the-art equipment housed all in one building. Having worked at 15 other centers, he also appreciates how this hospital is able to provide quality care at a reasonable price, where at others a procedure such as dental care might be considered too expensive. Dr. Ballasteros speaks both Spanish and English, and lives in Apple Valley with his wife, Alicia. He enjoys walking his two mixed-breed dogs, drinking a coffee, and catching up with the latest medical texts.

About the coordinator Adriana Lopez, Wedding Coordinator at Sunset Hills, loves weddings. She worked for a major bridal salon for four years, eventually owning her own salon, The Bridal Outlet, for 13 years. After closing her store, she heard from a friend that Sunset Hills was looking for a wedding coordinator. She met with the manager and was hired on a handshake. Taking advantage of social media, business grew quickly — Weddings at Sunset Hills on Facebook and #SH Weddings on Instagram — and Adriana began hiring staff. She currently has five capable helpers who enjoy weddings as much as she does. “My favorite part is watching the guests and wedding party having a good time,” she says. Adriana was born in Naples, Italy, and when the family moved to the United States, her parents opened a popular Italian restaurant in Burbank. Adriana worked in the family business and from her early years learned about working with people, coordinating staff as well as menu planning for large parties and company banquets. Seeking a slower pace and a good place to raise her family, she and husband Jorge, who had friends in the High Desert, decided to move here 28 years ago. They have two children and two beautiful grandchildren.

Q

A

How far in advance should we book our wedding?

The venue is usually the most expensive item. We recommend booking at least a year in advance because once the venue is secured, the couple can move on to other things. The onsite Wedding Coordinator handles the booking and stays in touch right up to the day of the event. The Coordinator oversees the decoration of the venue including centerpieces, datebook, favors and makes certain everything is ready for a smooth “start to finish” event.

Q A

We recommend the ceremony begin an hour and a half before sunset to allow time for special photos of the couple as well as of the wedding party.

Is there a “best time of day” for a Sunset Hills wedding?

Usually the couples provide the caterer, flowers, disc jockey, photographer or videographer, and officiant. Sunset Hills does the rest. However, we offer packages that can help couples

We want our wedding to include a dinner reception. Is that possible at Sunset Hills?

We usually recommend “head table” seating for the couple and the wedding party, with buffet-style service for guests.

Are other events planned the same day as the wedding?

No other event is booked for the day of your wedding or for

any other special event. Our options include indoor or outdoor services and receptions or combinations of the two — the service outside, reception inside or vice versa, for example, so the entire facility is available for the party. We utilize the lobby for gift display, guestbook signing, appetizer service, photo booth and so on.

The journey from the dream to the reality was not an easy one. Chet’s mother had a vision one day in church and knew someone with land that would be the perfect location. Chet met with Doug Waas, owner of many acres in the Sycamore Rocks area of Apple Valley. Doug and Chet discussed his vision, and Doug agreed to sell Chet a 240-acre parcel of land he owned. away in 1998, Dale encouraged Chet to build a chapel in memory of her husband. On Feb. 7, 2007, the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Sunset Chapel was completed. Today Sunset Hills Memorial Park offers pre-planning, niches of several varieties, engraving and many more services. The goal is to provide a personal touch for every service rather

than a corporate approach that is often less about the person being honored. Chet Hitt maintains an interest in the services held at Sunset Hills, standing graveside and having a hand on the casket. Sunset Hills Memorial Park is located at 24000 Waalew Road, Apple Valley. The telephone number is 760-247-0155. The website is www.sunsethills.cc.

About the founder Chet Hitt has lived in Apple Valley most of his life. His father Carl started the family business, Hitt Plumbing. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and own his own business. In 1989 a friend mentioned he wished his mom could be buried in Apple Valley. Chet proposed building a cemetery there. In 1995, he secured a 241-acre parcel near Sycamore Rocks for Sunset Hills Cemetery. Chet became partners with the owner of prior competitor Victor Valley Mortuary, the beginning of Sunset Hills Mortuary. He is an advocate of the local community and has worked on many local projects and been involved in many business endeavors. He brought the first concert series to Apple Valley. Chet has served on the Board of Trustees of St. Mary Hospital and was Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. He sits on the Advisory Board of the Victor Valley Global Medical Group and on Friends of the Fair for the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds. Chet is Chairman of the Board of the Sunset Hills Children’s Foundation and the Topock 66 Children’s Foundation. Chet believes firmly there is no selfmade man. A lot of people along the journey helped him achieve success.

Q A

Why is pre-planning for funeral services so important?

The decision to pre-plan is a very personal one. Those who ultimately take the important step in documenting their wishes regarding their funeral and burial plots and sharing their decisions with their loved ones usually express a great sense of of comfort and relief, both financially and emotionally. Emotional support is important so your wishes are carried out in the way you would want in the event of your passing. Financially, pre-planning can benefit your family because you lock in today’s prices.

Q

Does Sunset Hills provide a free early 1900s horse-drawn coach for veterans at no charge?

A

Yes. We offer this service as well as active duty discounts out of gratitude for their service.

Q

Is it true that Sunset Hills is starting a cemetery in Hesperia?

A

Yes. We have acquired 84 acres in Hesperia at the top of the Cajon Pass and as an organization feel very honored to give Hesperia their very first and only cemetery. We anticipate ground

breaking in the first quarter of 2019.

Q

Is Sunset Hills’ family of mortuaries and cemeteries the only locally owned and operated in the High Desert?

A

Yes. We are the only locally owned cemeteries and mortuary combinations. All of our families are served local and stay local. We do not contract with anyone for any of our services. Everything from transportation to burial or cremation is all done in-house.

Cross Eyed Cow Pizza D

onna and Jim Granger have literally built the Cross-Eyed Cow restaurant on the foundation of history. They transformed an old garage that likely serviced many vehicles on Route 66 back in 1910. At the end of 2012, they opened to sell handcrafted pizzas and tasty subs to those who come through their doors. Their restaurant is located in the small unincorporated area of Oro Grande, just northwest of Victorville. Donna said back during the gold rush people thought they had found gold

here. People came from Pasadena to build second homes along the Mojave River and hold debutante balls in the 1800s. There were lots of garages all along Route 66 stocked with belts, oil, tires, and anything a traveler would need to service their vehicle. However, the railroad bypassed Oro Grande, which affected the growth of the area. Some say it killed Oro Grande and made Victorville grow. It has settled to be more of a rural small town community but the restaurant has really seemed to revitalize the

area. “It was almost like a town forgotten,” said the Grangers. Donna and her husband have meticulously collected bits of history throughout California and incorporated it into their restaurant. They have the iconic cow on the roof, a windmill outside from Northern California, old booths from the railroad depot in Corona, seats from a 1940s theater, and a counter made from an airplane wing. It has been a labor of love for them.

About the owner Donna Granger is an interior designer and enthusiastically loves the High Desert. “It’s a great place to live in California…We are close to the beach, the mountains… everything without the traffic!” Donna and Jim Granger moved to the High Desert in 2004 and the Cross-Eyed Cow restaurant is one of several businesses they own. “The High Desert is my absolute favorite,” Donna said. “The people are awesome here.” It took the Grangers two years to build the restaurant and throughout the process people kept asking why they wanted to build where they were, Donna said. However, since they finished building and opened the Cross-Eyed Cow, a lot of antique shops have gone in nearby. People tend to eat lunch and then look through all the little shops near the restaurant. “It makes us feel good that we started that,” Donna said.

25

Q A

Where did we come up with the name “Cross Eyed Cow Pizza”?

Our building was built in the early 1900’s and resembled an old barn, even though it was built originally as a garage. My husband installed a metal “COW” on the roof, and we started searching names with “COW”. Couldn’t find a “Cross Eyed Cow” anywhere on the internet, so the name was born.

Q A

Why did you select Oro Grande for the location?

We had been leasing our building out to other businesses when we

heard that Oro Grande was starting to build a new school. We decided PIZZA and students were a great match.

Q

How did you come up with all the recipes? Were they family recipes?

A

After deciding to open a pizza restaurant, we started eating at Pizza Restaurants while we traveled. I kept a notebook in my purse of different recipes and techniques we loved as a family. We decided we couldn’t please everyone, so we would have recipes we all loved.

Q A

Who painted the cow on the roof?

Our daughter, Weather Grace, painted the cow. My husband selected the colors and bought the paint, and we let Gracie be creative. She is the beautiful brunette at the counter most week days.

AC Plus

Heating & Air Co. AC

Plus is committed to doing air conditioning and heating just a little bit better than the competition. Ron, the owner, had a bad experience with the HVAC company that serviced his home a few years back. As a matter of fact, it was so bad he decided to get in the business himself, kind of a mid-life change of direction. Ron took his expertise in electronics

and mechanics and enrolled in an Air Conditioning and Heating school where he received his AS degree and obtained his ASI certification. After working in the field for several years, Ron started AC Plus and never looked back. AC Plus works hard at delivering prompt and reliable service. We pride ourselves in giving our customers

what they need at a reasonable price. Our philosophy is to approach each customer’s problem as if it were a problem in our home. We teach our technicians to be very sensitive to the customer’s needs and home. We will always have a fresh uniform on and will be at your home within 90 minutes of your call. If we fail to meet this guarantee, we will waive our trip charge. AC Plus uses the flat-rate method to determine the cost of a repair job. For the customer, that means that the price is clearly stated in our repair book. Our technicians cannot raise the price or give a different price to another customer for the same job — no overcharging any time of year. Our flat-rate pricing policy mean the price quoted before the work is started doesn’t change. If you’re looking for a company big enough to get you the best prices, yet small enough to offer good hometown-style service, contact us. We are located at 14615 Palmdale Road, Victorville. Call us at 760-243-4440.

About the Owner AC Plus Heating & Air Conditioning Co. was founded by Ron Postoian back in 2000 with sons Eric, Scott and Matt. All three are part of the day-to-day operations of the business. AC Plus has built quite a reputation, with more than 150 5-Star Yelp and Google Reviews and a perfect A + Rating with the Better Business Bureau. The family-owned business follow’s Ron’s philosophy in going above and beyond. When you hire AC Plus, you’re hiring a locally owned business, not a big box store with exorbitant pricing. Ron wants his company to provide the best customer service with great family prices. That is a promise. S p ec i a ls : Anyone who refers to this article will receive 0% interest on a new energy efficient heating and air system and $300 off a new complete heating and air system.

27

Q

Are new air conditioning and heating systems worth the expense to install?

A

Yes. Depending on your current system, a new energy efficient system can use between 20 to 50 percent less electricity and natural gas. New units also provide better comfort and if designed properly, will run for less time and provide better cooling.

Q

What’s something about HVAC that most people don’t know?

A

The importance of quality duct work in the home and proper sizing of equipment for the home means the HVAC will run efficiently to heat or cool the entire home.

Q A

What’s a common problem you see?

Unmaintained and dirty equipment are the most common issues that we run into every day. Not having routine cleanings and regular filter changes cause about 90 percent of the equipment failure calls we receive.

Q

What do you love about working in the HVAC industry in general and, specifically, for AC Plus?

A

The relationships we’ve developed over the last 18 years are the best part of working in the industry and for AC Plus. Working for this community enables us to continue to develop more relationships. Also every day is a new experience.

Dr. Ramin Ashtiani D

r. Ramin Ashtiani chose to pursue cardiology because his father had severe congestive heart failure when he was in medical school. “That was a turning point for me to gravitate toward cardiology,” he said.

He tries to spend as much time as possible with the patients while consulting them. His goal is to hear what they have to say and listen to them. “I try to treat them as a patient and not as a number…If you treat the patient

using only numbers and tests, you might not be able to treat the patient correctly. You need to hear it from the patient’s perspective and treat them as a whole.” Dr. Ashtiani has treated many patients throughout Southern California, including at Orange County Hospital, Riverside Community Hospital, Desert Valley Hospital, St. Mary Hospital, Victor Valley Hospital, Barstow Community Hospital, and San Antonio Hospital. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at UC Riverside, where he teaches cardiology to students in the office and hospitals. To set up an appointment with Dr. Ashtiani in Victorville, call 760-241-3547. To set up an appointment with him in Barstow call 760-256-0328.

About the Owner Dr. Ramin Ashtiani helps people keep their hearts pumping strong. He is a cardiologist and an electrophysiologist with his practice based in Victorville. Patients know him as a genuine doctor because listening is a critical part of how he treats the individual. He has 12 years of experience in his field and has been treating patients in the High Desert for nine years. He specialized in internal medicine cardiology in Mount Sinai New York and in electrophysiology at Baylor University in Texas. His passion for helping those with congestive heart failure stems from his father’s own experience with congestive heart failure while Dr. Ashtiani was in medical school. Dr. Ashtiani is now passing on his considerable knowledge to the students he teaches UC Riverside, where he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, specializing in cardiology.

29

Q A

Where did you go to school?

I specialized in internal medicine cardiology in Mount Sinai New York and electrophysiology at Baylor University.

Q A

What is cardiac electrophysiology?

It is the study of the electricity of the heart and congestive heart failure. It deals with diagnosing and treating irregular heart beats. Pacemakers use electricity to stimulate the heart and regulate its contractions and defibrillators can restore the heart’s beating if it suddenly stops.

Q A

How does someone know if they should visit you?

I treat patients with shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, hypertension, and dizziness. I also treat patients with peripheral artery disease, cholesterol disease, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiac apnea, atrial fibrillation, palpitation, and syncope.

Q A

What can people do today to keep their heart healthy?

Number one is daily exercise. It is important to maintain an ideal body weight. Also eat plenty of

vegetables, fish, lean meats, fruits. It’s important to have a diverse diet. Watch your calorie count and eat less saturated fat. If you have any risk factors of heart disease, follow up with your doctor. These risk factors include hypertension, high cholesterol, prior stroke, cardiac apnea, diabetes, obesity, and a family history of heart disease.

sories — that are popular with flower orders, too. Every year Fairy Tales Flowers lets Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts set up their cookie and popcorn booths outside the shop. A drive-through flower stand set up for “Mother’s Day week” last May was very popular, too. Weather permitting, this feature will be an annual event. When it comes to designer skills, Fairy Tales Flowers is a winner with many of the designs having won ribbons at the San Bernardino County Fair. Fairy Tale Flowers invites you to stop by and discuss flowers for your next big event. The shop is located at 17837 Bear Valley Road, Suite D, in Hesperia. The telephone number is 760-244-0522.

One of the shop’s specialties is floral arrangements or sprays for funerals. These pieces of beautiful floral art can cover the casket or fill baskets or standing sprays. Dayna Bickmore and her staff take pride that their skills and compassion result in beautiful creations that honor the loved one and the family.

Corsages and boutonnieres for proms are also important offerings at Fairy Tales Flowers; a recent FatherDaughter event was made more special with matching flowers for the couples. The shop offers gift items — stuffed animals and other collectibles, metal art, ceramic containers and acces-

About the Owner Dayna Bickmore has been in the floral industry for more than 30 years, having started work as a delivery driver for two Chino area florists. One of the owners took Dayna under her wing and showed her the basics of floral design. Her interest piqued, Dayna enrolled in a floral design class at the local adult school and knew she had found her niche. Eventually promoted to shop manager, Dayna stayed until new owners made changes in the shop’s focus. “I moved on to work at Von’s as their floral manager and eventually became District Manager of 17 stores,” Dayna said, citing the importance of training in mass marketing, display and customer service that have become her stock in trade. Eventually she moved to the High Desert and became friends with the owner of Potters Fairy Tales Flowers in Hesperia, who kept asking, “When are you going to buy my shop?” One day, Dayna said, “Let’s talk,” and the rest is history. She is an award-winning floral designer with championship ribbons on the wall of Fairy Tales Flowers to prove it and thoroughly enjoys helping customers find the perfect way to express themselves with flowers.

31

Q A

Do you deliver?

Fairy Tales Flowers delivers throughout the United States and Canada, using the Flower Shop Network. The flowers are ordered from a real local florist. Place your order with us, and the Network searches for local shops in the town where the delivery will be made. Other “tele-flower services” keep most of the fees they charge. Flower Shop Network is like one flower shop calling another.

Q A

Where do your roses come from?

Fairy Tales Flowers buys roses farm-direct from Quito, Ecuador. Women from local villages earn their living harvesting the roses that are delivered within 48 hours. All the flowers are cleared by Federal inspectors.

Q

Besides Valentine’s and Mother’s Day, what are the busiest events for flowers?

A

Proms and graduations are always busy for us, and it is wise to shop ahead for corsages or other

floral gifts, especially if you are looking for particular flowers or colors to match your ensemble. This year Fairy Tales Flowers was able to get special customdyed roses for each of the area high schools — black and gold for Hesperia, teal and black for Sultana, a two-toned orange and white swirl for Apple Valley, green and white for Victor Valley, and burgundy and gray for Granite Hills. Ordering at least a week or two in advance for these items is important, too, since the flowers are custom dyed.

Q

What is the most important thing to remember about floral gifts for special occasions?

A

If at all possible, order early. Quick turnaround times are often possible, but for maximum success, order flowers at least two weeks ahead, especially for big events like weddings, to make certain we have time to order everything we need to put your arrangements together.

r. Mamo said he was first inspired to practice medicine by his father, who worked as a pharmacist and physician in his home country of Ethiopia. Watching him take care of those in the local population where he lived with “helping hands” was really the “drive” that pushed him to go Europe for school. The doctor brings this same community-minded spirit to his practice. Before starting his private practice, Dr. Mamo ran a mobile clinic with St.

Mary’s, attending to those with less access to care. Now, he has a healthy practice with a loyal patient base and has been practicing medicine in the High Desert since 1995. Michael Norman, D.O. D

r. Michael Norman’s practice offers compassionate, quality care to a multitude of High Desert adult residents. Dr. Norman is an experienced physician with more than 25 years in practice. He is Board certified not only in internal medicine, but in obesity medicine, as well. He is an expert in

a variety of health issues but likes to specialize in cardiac problems, diabetes, and weight management. His practice offers a unique program called Ideal Protein. Ideal Protein is a physician-driven program that emphasizes eating proteins and vegetables over carbohydrates to train the body to lose fat. Dr. Norman has

seen great results with this program. One patient went from around 300 pounds to 146 pounds using this protocol. Weight coach Carmen Barker is a real-life example of how well this program can work. She lost over 100 pounds, and works with patients to keep them on track. Dr. Norman says the key is to stay motivated. If a patient isn’t absolutely committed, a “10 out of 10,” then studies have shown weight loss isn’t likely to happen. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, he believes all body systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another for good health. Overcoming obesity is one of these working parts that can lessen the occurrence of health issues and can lead to dramatic improvements in one’s well-being. His philosophy is developing a caring relationship in which he listens to each patient’s problems, instead of having a hand on the doorknob waiting to get to the next case. As a physician who essentially came up through the ranks starting as a respiratory therapist and physician’s assistant, Dr. Norman provides a distinct, well-rounded background in which he is devoted to caring for people. He is affiliated with Choice Medical Group, and is currently accepting new patients.

Michael Norman, D.O. Dr. Michael Norman has been practicing medicine in the High Desert and Big Bear for over 25 years. Born in Gloucester, England, he has lived in Southern California for most of his life. Before attending medical school at Western University of Health Sciences, he worked as both a respiratory therapist and a physician’s assistant, graduating from the University of Oklahoma’s program. These experiences anchored a passion in medicine that he still retains today. He completed his residency with Loma Linda in 1994 and was named “Resident of the Year.” For a time in the 1990s, he served as a hospitalist/medical director for Desert Valley Hospital, but he found he wanted to focus on providing quality care to patients more than tackling administrative issues. Norman works with his wife, Margaret, who manages the business side of the practice. They have six children together, with one in medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, mountain bike riding, and surfing Southern California’s beaches.

R

adiant Pediatrics has been providing quality, compassionate medical care to children since 2005. They see patients through from birth to adolescence, offering listening ears and helping hands to sick children and worried parents.

Dr. Akhil Sharma describes it as a “blessing” that he’s been able to provide care in the area for more than a decade and calls pediatrics “the most satisfying branch in medicine.” “We are the only people that come to work on Monday and look for-

ward to it,” he said. “Nothing is more satisfying than watching sick children get better.” He believes fulfilling this mission is a team effort, and he and his staff have worked to make their practice better by offering parents and patients easier access to care. Next month, they plan to upgrade their centralized electronics record system and allow parents who have a routine question to ask it electronically instead of holding on the phone. Other improvements will help reduce wait times and result in more efficient service and happier patients. The practice has a good rapport and working relationship with three major children’s hospitals: Loma Linda, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, providing access to a large network of experts and specialists for conditions that may be beyond their scope. Dr. Sharma believes in being honest with parents and truly listening to their concerns. He also likes to educate them to better handle future situations should they arise. Voted Best Pediatrician for two years running now, Dr. Sharma believes his empathetic approach to patients and great staff has led to their success. “I’ve seen them grow up from newborns, and go through all their stresses and happy moments, and now graduate and go to college,” he said. “It’s a pleasure. Bear Valley Urgent Care B

ear Valley Urgent Care has been offering quality medical care since 2015 for those unexpected or sudden illnesses that do not require an emergency room visit. Dr. de la Llana and his colleague, Yohannes Debebe, PA, pride themselves in being quick and efficient

in getting their patients back to optimal health. “We always feel that it’s your health and your time,” Dr. de la Llana says. The Urgent Care is located conveniently in the center of the Victor Valley area in the Hi Desert Plaza

Shopping Center at Bear Valley and Hesperia Road. It provides treatment for those illnesses that may be beyond the scope of a typical primary care practice but not so serious as to need a trip to the emergency room, things such as respiratory infections, minor sprains and pulled muscles, and sudden fevers or colds. The urgent care also has a primary care practice on-site and provides occupational medicine services. Employers can send their employees here for work-related injuries, and the staff conducts physicals for work, school, etc. Due to its location, laboratories and imaging centers are close by and BVUC can request digital x-rays, refill prescriptions, and send samples to the lab and typically receive speedy results. Even though BVUC respects your time and wants you to be seen quick, Dr. de la Llana and Debebe also know the importance of listening to their patients and seeing things from their perspective. One glowing review from Yelp describes their care perfectly: “The wait was about 30 minutes, service was friendly and efficient, and Dr. de la Llana had the BEST bedside manner. He was friendly, upbeat (totally caught me off guard being it was urgent care) and [was] conversant. I did not feel like a number but like he was my personal doctor.”

Dr. Jose de la Llana (R) and Yohannes Debebe (L) Dr. de la Llana earned his medical degree from Cebu University in the Philippines, where he is originally from. Following in the footsteps of his father who was also a physician, he completed an internship in family medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. Later, he did a residency in preventive medicine and public health at the Palm Beach County Health Department. Before coming to practice in the High Desert in 2013, he also worked at the Veterans’ Administration for five years. He feels a good way to practice medicine is to be empathetic and treat every patient like his own family member. Dr. de la Llana is married and has three children and enjoys spending time with his family and bicycling.

His philosophy is that doctor and patient should connect on a common ground and have a reciprocal relationship of respect. He feels the reason he has been voted Top 3 Best of the Desert for the last six years is that he is very relatable, having worked in several fields before medicine. He be-

lieves this allows him to connect with a variety of different patients and gain their trust easier. Running a solo practice also allows him to better focus on giving exceptional care through creating the peaceful environment and hiring employees that will make patients “feel like family.” Several of his employees have been working with Dr. Hansen for more than five years, with the newest going on two years. Having employees who are happy working translates to loyal patients that appreciate stability and really feel like they are the most important focus.

Yeghoian

Grading & Paving R

obert Yeghoian opened his grading and paving business in Apple Valley in 1985. Yeghoian Grading & Paving quickly became the first choice for superior quality asphalt contractors. Their customer service and workmanship are second to none.

Because your parking lot is often the first thing your customers see, having an attractive lot that is properly designed and maintained is important.

When it comes to commercial parking lots and residential parking areas, Yeghoian Grading & Paving offers an impressive list of services. They specialize in ADA Handicap requirements, asphalt paving, excavation, striping, grading, sealcoating, hot asphalt patching and various parking

lot services, including striping, repair, coating and maintenance. Long-time employee Bill Chaves purchased the business when Robert retired 15 years ago and has put

32-plus years of experience to good use. In 2018 Yeghoian’s Grading & Paving was voted Best of the Desert in the Daily Press People’s Choice Awards. Yeghoian’s has grown from doing small jobs to asphalt paving services for lots of all sizes and configurations, including parking lots for new buildings, restaurants, shopping centers, medical offices and more. Yeghoian’s Paving & Grading is in the business of preventing problems by analyzing current conditions and finding cost-effective solutions to those problems. Yeghoian’s specializes in utility asphalt repairs as well as residential asphalt and coatings. Often quick and easy repairs can be done rather than more costly repaving. The company’s goals include serving customers with a quick response to their phone calls and offering free estimates. Included is an explanation of preventative maintenance plans available to keep the asphalt beautiful while saving money in the long term. Remember, a well designed and maintained parking lot will keep your insurance company happy. Yeghoian’s Grading & Paving is located at 12191 Pawnee Road, Apple Valley. The telephone number is 760-247-8741. Visit their website, yegasphalt.com.

About the Owner Bill Chaves, owner of Yeghoian’s Paving & Grading, moved to the High Desert as a teenager when his family relocated from Massachusetts. He worked in retail for 25 years and was a District Manager for a retail chain that went out of business. Then he decided to become his own boss. His dad and older brother had worked in the paving business, so he thought he would give it a try himself and applied for a job with Robert Yeghoian of Yeghoian’s Paving & Grading. He worked as a crew member and eventually became a foreman, estimator and general manager. He soon found himself negotiating to purchase the business. Robert plans to turn the business over to his son Robert, a former Marine who grabbed a shovel seven years ago and is also learning the business from the ground up. For the past 15 years, Bill has seen Yeghoian’s Paving & Grading grow to be part of a community he and his family have grown to love. He believes the High Desert has “the best people,” and his business has helped many businesses pave the way to their own success.

Getting to know ...

Q A

How soon can you start on a project?

Once we are hired for your paving project, we have three crews so we can usually tackle a job within two weeks.

Q A

What is the cost of a paving project?

This is a complicated answer because there are so many variables for each paving job. This is why we offer free estimates. Just giving someone a squarefootage price is not accurate because the job depends on the thickness of the asphalt, which is determined by the amount

of traffic involved. The price also depends on the type of repair needed and, of course, the size of the area to be paved.

Q A

How can I repair asphalt and make it last longer?

At Yeghoian’s, along with a free estimate, we offer a preventative maintenance program. Sometimes repairing a problem is not adequate. The area may need to be repaved to take care of the issue.

Q

How soon can I seal a new asphalt parking lot?

A

The cure time for new asphalt is between 60 and 90 days. The curing must take place before the protective seal coating is applied. Asphalt gets soft in

the heat but can heal itself. The protective seal coating will prevent water and sun damage along with normal wear and tear.

Q A

How does the application lottery work?

It’s an impartial process to get our applicants on the waiting list. We place names on the list three times a year, and it’s all based on time. We use a numbering program for two lists each lottery, one for Apple Valley residents and the second for all other communities. Apple Valley does get some priority because our charter is with Apple Valley Unified. Siblings get highest priority, employees, Apple Valley residents and then all other communities. Once each family is assigned a number, applicants are placed on

the waiting list, chronologically, by graduation year.

Q A

How do you handle discipline?

The faculty and staff of AAE believe that a well-disciplined student body is essential for academic success. To achieve this goal, we have adopted a common set of beliefs based on the Love & Logic (c) Principles regarding discipline. This set of core beliefs will be adhered to when dealing with issues and concerns.

Q A

Do you have sports?

AAE is a member of the Cross Valley League and offers sports including: cross country, SRLA, volleyball, basketball, golf, tennis, baseball, softball, cheer, track and soccer.

Q A Q A

What honors and AP courses do you have?

We currently offer 20 honors and AP courses. How long does it take to get in?

There is a waiting list for most grades. However, it tends to

open up more in high school. We encourage you to submit an application as soon as possible.

Q A

What is the difference between a charter and a public school?

Charter schools are independent public schools with rigorous curriculum programs and unique educational approaches. In exchange for operational freedom and flexibility, charter schools are subject to higher levels of accountability than traditional public schools. Charter schools, which are tuition-free and open to all students, offer quality and choice in the public education system

A Dancer’s Pointe T

he premier dance studio in the High Desert, A Dancer’s Pointe trains dancers and former students who have found professional success beyond the desert. Their commitment to an age-appropriate, family-oriented environment sets A Dancer’s Pointe apart, allowing families to trust them with their dancers’ time and development.

The teachers and staff care deeply about the emotional, physical and mental development and well-being of the dancers. The studio’s goal is to provide young dancers with all the skills they need to thrive in professional dance and in their adult lives. A Dancer’s Pointe provides strong technical training and instills a love for dance and performing. The graded,

structured curriculum classes provide dancers with concrete feedback in their development. The program places a strong emphasis on dancer safety and injury prevention, encouraging dancers to push themselves while understanding their current level of development and capacity. The teachers want dancers prepared for anything from Broadway to a ballet company to MTV. The staff is highly trained, with current and former professional dancers serving as instructors. The tap program is headed up by the incredible Katherine Page, a soughtafter teacher who also teaches on the staff at Victor Valley College. The ballet program is led by former professional ballerina Amanda Castellanos. Each member of the staff brings a unique experience and perspective to their classes. At A Dancer’s Pointe, the teachers teach because they love to dance and want their students to love it, too. A Dancer’s Pointe is located at 18355 Highway 18, Apple Valley. The telephone number is 760-242-0352.

About the owner Linda Hanley grew up in a small farming/ coal mining community in Illinois. She took dance lessons from a former Radio City Rockette in a town 10 miles away during her childhood. In college, she totally immersed herself in their dance program while studying to become an early education teacher. “As life does sometimes, a whirlwind few years found me here in California, down in Orange County,” Linda said. “There I sought out as many dance opportunities I could find throughout the years.” After settling in the High Desert, Linda searched for a studio for herself and her young daughter. She discovered A Dancer’s Pointe and soon became a busy substitute teacher, then a teacher and eventually, in 1999, she became the owner. “I know I’m blessed with a connection to children,” Linda said. “I am so happy my path in life has led me here. To help guide these tiny little dancers to a love of music and movement — and maybe, just maybe, a fond lifetime memory — is so very fulfilling. I know God is pleased with me.”

63

Q A

Why should my child dance?

Dance helps young people learn personal responsibility, work ethic discipline and poise. Dance is uniquely personal, allowing dancers to be both athletes and artists. Knowing how to remain poised and eloquent even when you’re nervous is important, as is being an effective and integral part of a team when you know your fellow dancers are relying on you. Additionally, our dance studio really works as a family. Our younger dancers have the role models of older dancers to look up to.

We offer classes for ages 3 to adult. We offer training in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hop-hop, pointe, partnering, Polynesian, pre-ballet, combination classes, pre-teen beginner combination and more. Class times are Mondays through Fridays between 3 and 9:30 p.m.

avid and Lisa Oliver’s original plan was to own a restaurant, but when they began to look for care for their two young daughters, it was clear what their true calling was. “We wanted a high quality preschool and child care experience for our girls.

We knew there were other families wanting the same.” So in 1994 they changed gears. Lisa began taking child development classes at Victor Valley College and opened a home daycare. At the same time, David pursued his fire-

fighting career while working full time managing a manufacturing company. But not long after they opened their home daycare, they had an opportunity to purchase a Christian preschool and they were in business. “We knew God had led us to it. It was such a perfect fit.” They really enjoy working with their staff and students and seeing all the peace of mind they bring to the parents. “They know we have their best interests at heart.” They enjoyed working with the community in this way so much that they began expanding to new sites. They built their second location in 1997 and sold it to a friend and customer in 2000. After that, they planned, designed, and built Lakeside Academy in 2001. At that point, David began working at the academy full time. From the get go, Lakeside Academy has been a success, earning its first of many Best of the Desert awards in its first year. “We feel the success comes from having the support of our families, qualified and experienced staff, an excellent balanced curriculum, and an environment that is safe, comfortable, and inviting for our students.” Lakeside Academy is “expecting” a new state-of-the-art infant program. Applications for admission are being accepted now and space is very limited. Go to lakesideacademy.com for more information.

About the Owner Growing up, David Oliver was an Air Force brat who traveled the world with his family. Lisa Oliver’s parents owned several restaurants in Southern California. She grew up helping out and thought she might follow in their footsteps someday. But the couple found a new direction in life in 1994. After shifting gears, Lisa began taking child development classes at Victor Valley College and opened a home daycare. At the same time, David pursued his firefighting career while working full time managing a manufacturing company. But they soon had an opportunity to purchase a Christian daycare. They did so and have never looked back. The Olivers planned, designed, and built Lakeside Academy in 2001. At that point, David began working at the academy full time. The couple has been successful ever since, serving the community and participating in their students’ success for the past 17 years.

65

Q A

What is Lakeside Academy?

Established in 2001, Lakeside Academy is a Christian-based preschool and child care center serving children 18 months to 12 years old. We are about to launch our all new State-of-the-Art Infant Program and will then begin at six weeks old. Currently, we offer a full-time preschool program, kindergarten and before/ after school care. We also offer a full-day summer camp with a swimming pool and field trips and holiday break schedule for school-age students.

Q A

What is your educational philosophy?

At Lakeside Academy, we believe a balanced program that meets the needs of our students academically and developmentally is the best approach.

Q A

What are the staff qualifications?

The staff at Lakeside Academy must meet certain qualifications to be part of our team. First and foremost, our team members are individuals who demonstrate a joy and gift for teaching and working with children. Additionally, college courses in

child development, preschool teaching experience, extensive background checks and health screens, along with ongoing professional training are among the requirements.

Q A

What will my child be doing at preschool?

Our students are provided a safe and nurturing environment with opportunities to learn, grow, explore, discover, create and experience! We use fun monthly themes to teach our students about the world around them through activities like creative art, music, science, math, language arts and more!

About Dr. Anna Yatsenko Dr. Anna Yatsenko had a drive to be a chiropractor at a very young age. She wanted to get involved in the field after witnessing chiropractic patients recover from various conditions. Her volunteer work at a chiropractic office turned into a life-changing job opportunity. She started practice seven years ago. She pursued her undergraduate studies at UC Davis in Physiology, Neurology and Behavior, and she later graduated from Southern California University of Health Sciences with a Doctorate in Chiropractic. Her vision is to help individuals reach their optimal potential of health through chiropractic, nutrition, and wellness care. “Restoration and healing others is what I was put on this earth to do. I want to continue seeing lives changed in my office.” Chiropractic Corrective Care is the most scientific, researched, and published corrective chiropractic technique. Corrective care doctors aim to rehabilitate and realign the spine back to its optimal shape, therefore restoring optimal nerve flow to the limbs and organs.

67

Q

What benefits come from Chiropractic Corrective Care?

A

Just as a kink in a garden hose can dramatically reduce the flow of water coming from the tap, a spine out of alignment dramatically reduces vital information going from your brain to vital organs. Thus, your organs are much more susceptible to malfunction and disease. As a Corrective Care patient, you will notice not only a dramatic decrease in pain or discomfort, but more importantly, a sense of restored health and energy.

Q

What can a new patient expect from this Corrective Care facility that differs from other chiropractic offices?

A

Following a scientific analysis of your posture and the curvature of your spine, we develop a treatment plan to restore proper alignment, relieve pain, and improve function. TNT’s Cafe T

he philosophy of TNT’s Cafe is simple: They love to please. As a mainstay of High Desert breakfast and lunch cuisine for over 25 years, TNT’s accomplishes this mission by serving delicious food in generous portions at a reasonable price. As you walk in, friendly wait staff greet you and make you feel immediately welcome.

etc., which can all be customized with a slew of side orders, TNT’s also has a specials menu that changes daily. Some of the more popular items are the delectable chicken-fried steak, club sandwich, biscuits and gravy, and pastrami dip. If for some reason you don’t find on the menu something that will whet your appetite, the staff will strive to

Tonette Steele, who took over as owner after her father, Tony Paoletto, passed away in 2008, attributes the welcoming atmosphere to her father, who was known as very gregarious and showed real concern for all of his patrons and employees. Their success is evident with all of the loyal, satisfied customers that regularly pack the unassuming restau-

Their menu is a perfect example of the motto: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It has remained unchanged on the same long sheet since they first opened back in 1992, with an extensive list of items for both the most important meal and the midday meal. Offering your usual staples such as sandwiches, burgers, omelets, salads,

whip up whatever you’d like with the available ingredients. More than just delicious food, TNT’s also offers a comfortable environment that is very inviting. It has remained in the family since they first opened, and several of the employees have spent their entire careers with the restaurant.

rant located on Bear Valley Road just east of Mariposa Road. TNT’s Yelp page is another testament: it holds an almost perfect score of 4.5 stars with 171 mostly glowing reviews, with one reviewer saying: “Let me tell you that my hunt for the best French toast and breakfast in the High Desert has stopped.”

Tony Paoletto and Tonette Steele Tony Paoletto had been a successful restaurateur almost all of his life. Starting out as a cook at 17 years old, his passion for the culinary arts took him on a path that included owning several successful eateries in the Pasadena area and Bullhead City, Arizona before moving to the High Desert with his wife, Sue, and family in 1987. He opened six TNT’s Cafes throughout the Victor Valley area, named for himself and his daughter, Tonette Steele. She also acquired his love to cook from an early age. After Tony passed in 2008, the reins were handed to Tonette and the last TNT cafe has always been family-owned and operated since it opened in 1992. Tonette hopes her father knew how many lives he touched and left some kind of impact on. He sponsored one of his cooks, Roberto, at 26 years old. Roberto still works at the restaurant today. Some might see Paoletto’s legacy as the number of successful restaurants he started, but Tonette says his “real legacy was the love and passion he had for our mom and family.”

Q A

How long have you been in the restaurant business?

TNT’s has been serving delicious breakfasts and lunches since 1992, but the family has owned and operated businesses for years prior.

Q A

What are some changes you’ve gone through since opening?

Mostly structural/remodeling. Painting, furniture, that sort of thing. We consider our employees to be family, and we don’t see much change or turnover there. Many of our workers have been with us since or near the beginning. Customers, too. We have

regulars who come in every day. It’s nice to have that feeling of family when you go to work.

Q A

What do you attribute your good food to?

Knowing what our customers like and don’t like, and maintaining a good relationship with our food vendors like Sysco. So many things change, our customers like that our menu is pretty much the same no matter when they come in. We also serve large portions, so our restaurant family gets what they pay for. We don’t want you leaving hungry, we want you leaving satisfied.

The Gym W

orld Gym, officially becoming known as The Gym on Oct. 1, has been part of the High Desert since 1988. In 2014 the fitness facility moved from Park Avenue in Victorville to its present location on Valley Center Drive. Loyal members followed, and there has been an increase in new memberships, too, because of the larger facility — now 40,000 square feet, more parking, and the interior design, described by Regional Director A.J. Buonarigo as ready to help members “to get good results.” Buonarigo was a Master Fitness Trainer for the US Army and has a degree in Exercise Science from the American Military University. He has been with The Gym since 2014. He designed the Status RX weight room

and Status Cycle room, which are available to every member. The Gym’s facility also includes treadmills, stair-steppers, and the heaviest free weights in the High Desert. There are sauna and steam rooms, and a room for aerobics classes. Anyone wishing to lose weight, rehab from an injury or improve flexibility

will benefit from The Gym. Members arrive ready to work out and are focused on their goals because of the positive atmosphere and the personal trainers who can instruct members on the proper way use the equipment and answer any questions. High Desert residents can sign up for a free three-day trial membership. Each prospective member gets a tour of The Gym from a Membership Advisor. Discounts are available for public service employees, as well. The Gym is also open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Gym is located at 14689 Valley Center Drive, Victorville. The telephone number is 760-243-4020.

About the Sales Manager Paula Ramirez loves to run. Her mother bought her a membership to The Gym (then World Gym) when she was 16 and a student at Victor Valley High School. Going to work at The Gym seemed like the obvious “next step.” Paula started at the front desk and now manages a sales team of five people. She cannot say enough about The Gym — the facility, the equipment, and various exercise programs — as well as how much she enjoys the people she meets every day. “We have great owners, too,” she says. “Our facility has something for everyone.” Paula calls The Gym the best gym in the High Desert and says many members she met when she first started working there 12 years ago are still members today. “Our membership is like family,” she says. The best part of that “family,” in Paula’s eyes, is that if they leave, they always come back. She said she enjoys coming to work every day and seeing members reaching their own fitness goals. She understands the importance of fitness and believes a membership at The Gym to be a very good way to make fitness part of your lifestyle.

ers have responded once again, voting Ozel Fine Jewelers winner of the Jewelry Store category in Best of the Desert 2018. Sizing, cleaning and repairs are part of keeping your jewelry working beautifully and looking its best. Often this work can be done while you wait. Today Ozel Fine Jewelers is synonymous with beautiful jewelry. If a custom piece of jewelry is your dream, bring your ideas to Ozel Fine Jewelry. About the founder When Abraham Tekin was 12 years old, he began working in the family’s jewelry business in Turkey. It did not take him long to start his own jewelry manufacturing business at the ripe old age of 15. He realized his dream of coming to America when he was 18 years old, met and married “the love of his life” Sheila when he was 19, and today the Tekins and their four children — sons Gregory and Jacob and daughters Estee and Robyn — as well as nieces and nephews are now three generations of Ozel Fine Jewelers. His brother Joe manages the Palm Desert store, and Abraham owns a third location across from Ontario Mills in Rancho Cucamonga. The idea of “family” extends to everyone who walks in the door of Ozel Fine Jewelers. Abraham believes you become part of his family as well. Abraham believes jewelry is very special. It represents love of the person who receives the jewelry and will last forever.
