Meeting Management

M

any of you have probably chaired a meeting at one time or another. If you haven’t, I am sure the opportunity will arise at one point in your life when you manage a meeting. Oh, did I say “manage”? That’s exactly what I said!

There are correct ways to manage a meeting.

Robert’s Rules of Order was written “to help bring order out of chaos” in meetings, and you’ll find minor differences in how each organization run their meetings by using Robert’s Rules. For example, some will have discussion after the motion is made; others have a discussion before the motion is made. However, there are a few pet peeves of mine that totally drive me nuts during meetings: 1.

Our Chamber Board meeting is an example of how a good meeting is managed. Our agenda is provided to us a day or two before (along with the minutes from the previous meeting) for everyone to review and prepare.

We have had an excellent group of board members the last three years and I enjoy listening to their ideas and thoughts so much that I want to continue to hear them speak and have fun (yes, it is OKAY to have fun in a meeting!). But being the chairperson, I need to rein them in and be mindful of everyone’s time.

In addition to the above, here are a few tips to manage a good meeting: 1.

Start the meeting on time as soon as you have a quorum.

Try to keep the meeting to one hour.

Assure every member has an opportunity to speak.

Try to keep it light.

Fairly limit the duration of discussion and presentation.

Assign a task to the appropriate person of that interest. For example, if the task involves real estate, assign it to a person who has interest in real estate.

Never stop looking for new talent on the committee and bring new people in.

Use the most important words and phrases: I need your help. Thank you. Great job.

Publicly recognize the committee members for their many contributions.

Just by writing this article, I have learned a few new things and will make a conscious effort to use these tips. I hope you have, too, and enjoy managing your next meeting!

T

he Kemper Campbell Ranch Mixer, our annual “Members Only” event held at the historic Kemper Campbell Ranch, had a wonderful mix of long-time and recent members mingling at sunset. This beautiful outdoor setting with vast panaramic views of the Mojave River offered members a chance to catch-up in a one-of-a-kind locale. First time attendees were amazed that such a historic site remains unknown to the general public. This Year’s Roadrunner Classic Enjoys Another Year of Great Weather and Golfing

ver 100 golfers lined up under beautiful blue skies for a shotgun start to the 37th Annual Roadrunner Golf Classic. New Leadership Class Will Be Forming Leadership Program Helps Form Our Future Leaders

A

s an ongoing commitment to business enhancement, the Victor Valley Chamber of Commerce will be starting its 2015 Leadership Victor Valley this January. The Leadership program is a series of 10 classes taken over 6 months to enhance the leadership qualities of it’s participants by involving them in various aspects of community programs, engaging with local elected officials and discussions of local issues. Community leaders design each session to present differing perspectives on each subject, from water management to diversity. Leadership Victor Valley is designed to inform, motivate and challenge the participants. “Leadership Victor Valley is a necessary block of instruction for any local citizen interested in the specific workings of the critical aspects of the Victor Valley” said Derek King, Excelsior Charter Schools.

BBO Workshop Explores More Than Just Social Media

embers that attended our Social Media Workshop in September didn’t know what to expect when no sooner had they seated themselves than presenter, Bridget Ayers, had them get up and walk outside so she could teach them the first trick on social media. For those that missed it, you’ll have to find a member that attended to learn that secret. That’s how Bridget rolls, and the rest of the workshop ricocheted back and forth on how to increase your business between LinkedIn and Facebook. he Chamber’s annual signature event, An Evening Affaire, showcases the Best of the Best in the High Desert. Members and their guests can sample fine wine and cuisine from dozens of local restaurants while discovering the talents of local artisans and enjoying live music. It is an amazing event that could not happen without the dedication of our Co-Chairs and Committee. There are restaurants, wineries, breweries, artists, musicians, and sponsors to book. Invites, programs, silent auction gifts, and logistics to work on. Chuck and Jennifer our Co-Chairs invite you to be a part of this event.

rom 12 finalists in the Coldwell Banker Home Source Real Estate’s annual Free Home Makeover, Michelle and Bryan Brown of Apple Valley were selected as the 2014 winners. Weeks later Coldwell Banker Home Source along withY102, 106.5 The Fox, Talk 960, Kat Country and Daily Press surprised Michelle at work. Michelle recently finished chemotherapy and radiation making it a challenge for the family to fix anything around the house, so the timing was perfect.

DG’s Lawncare designed a stunning new landscape, installed water conserving irrigation as well as drought-tolerant plants. Mark & Nellie’s Nursery donated plants, Angel Rock and Sand donated dirt and gravel while Valley Tree Care, removed trees from the front yard. Recessed lighting in the kitchen, new bathroom and ceiling fans and replaced outlets, security lighting were completed by Silver partner Raines Electric. ServPro assisted by hanging interior doors, repairing damaged drywall and cleaning the floor tile, which seemed to open up the home. Vern’s Glass, Country Oak & Stoves and Sparlin Drywall also helped with dramatic changes.

Also contributing were Hitt Plumbing, Steeno Designs, Coyote Loco, Dunn Edwards, Carpet Club, Carpeteria, Sleep Center, Athena Jeans, World Gym, Cubit Engineering, and HD Art N Frame.

The annual Home Makeover giveaway is hosted by Coldwell Banker Home Source in an effort to give back to the community while working with local businesses, such as those above, to showcase their products and services. “Each year we are able to team up with amazing local businesses which is exhilarating for everyone involved,” said Coldwell Banker Home Source President, Chris Lamoreaux.

Chuck Duncan, Reflections Catering My wife, Georgia and I, became part of the Victor Valley Chamber because we were just starting our catering business and were trying to find ways to become part of the local business community so that our business could grow. We realized that for the business to grow we needed to become not only members of the Chamber but also become involved in the Chamber.

Once we became involved in the Chamber our business started to grow. During the first two to three years approximately 95 percent of our business was from other chamber members. Today 80 percent of our business comes directly from Chamber members and 15 percent comes from events that have been for the Chamber or Chamber members. Not only has our business grown because of the Chamber, but we have gained so many new friends.

Since we first got involved in the Chamber we have tried to be part of as many events as possible. One of the events that we became involved in was the Evening Affaire. After our first Evening Affaire event we felt it was something that we wanted to do each year. It has been enjoyable ever year. I have been part of An Evening Affaire committee for several years and have enjoyed it. I was asked this year if I would like to co-chair the committee with Jennifer Hernandez and I readily accepted the position. Jennifer and I are looking forward to making this Evening Affaire one of the best ever.

I got involved with the chamber, as it is something I believe in doing, as a way of assisting with the ongoing commitment to making our community better and stronger. iwanis Club of Victorville is excited to bring the High Desert the 2014 Victorville Christmas Parade in December. The parade has been a family destination for decades and this year will be an exceptional celebration honoring our local heroes.

The 2014 theme “A Christmas Morning” will feature floats and entries themed to represent family traditions, scenic depictions, and fun activities in the Victor Valley. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th at 10am and also illustrates local partnerships through sponsorships and activities available. The parade is a large, community driven program and Victorville Kiwanis depends upon on the great relationships with the City of Victorville, Victor Valley Global Medical Center, committee members and other supporters to make this year a huge success.

Proposition 1

The Water Quality, Supply and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014

California’s economy depends on a reliable water supply. Proposition 1 secures California’s water future, keeps family farms and businesses productive, and puts Californians to work building the new facilities needed to store, deliver and treat water with a $7.5 billion bond. Proposition 1 provides monies to clean contaminated groundwater which serves as a critical buffer against drought by providing additional water in years when there is not enough rainfall or snow. Proposition 1 also L_WHUKZ ^H[LY YLJ`JSPUN HUK LMÄJPLUJ` PTWYV]LTLU[Z THRPUN [OL ILZ[ \ZL VM [OL Z[H[LZ L_PZ[PUN supplies. In addition, the measure provides funding for clean drinking water in communities where water is contaminated. Proposition 1 invests in new water storage by increasing the amount of water that can be stored during wet years for the dry years that will continue to challenge California. The $7.5 billion bond plan includes $2.7 billion for water storage projects.

The Victor Valley has turned the corner on rental properties since the “Great Recession”. During the 2000-2008 time-frame, the Victor Valley saw rental rates rise over 60% and enjoyed low single digit vacancy rates.

From 2009-2010 a complete reversal happened with rents dropping rapidly and vacancy increasing to over 10% in the Victor Valley. This past year, the Victor Valley enjoyed nice rental rate increases over 10% and saw vacancy rates drop below 8% in the area.

A typical 1 bedroom / 1 bathroom apartment increased from $455 to $535 per month, a typical 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom increased from $595 to $695 per month, and the 3 bedroom / 2 bathroom increased from $745 to $845 per month. These can vary from area to area in the various High Desert cities, but in general this is the average pricing we have seen.

Vacancy rates are as low as 6% in some area currently.
